RESUMEN

The osteolytic effect of inflamed cholesteatoma can result in destruction of the bony confines of the middle ear and mastoid. Although extramastoid extension of cholesteatoma is possible through this mechanism, it is rarely seen by the otolaryngologist. We present two cases of extra-aural spread of cholesteatoma. One case illustrates the necessity of a full neuroradiologic examination of patients with neurologic findings and cholesteatoma prior to exploration of the middle ear and mastoid.

RESUMEN

Otitis media is the leading reportable disease among the Indian and Eskimo population. In addition, its prevalence is more frequent in American natives than in Caucasians or Negroes. An attempt herewith is made to delineate the factors that account for the high prevalence of otitis media in the acute and chronic form. Secondly, the characteristic morbid complications of otitis media in this population are evaluated.

RESUMEN

Our experience with 119 cases of peritonsillar abscess supports the experience of others, that immediate tonsillectomy is a safe treatment which provides prompt, complete drainage of the abscess. There was one episode of immediate postoperative hemorrhage and one of delayed bleeding, but there were no anesthetic complications. If one believes that the abscess is an indication for tonsillectomy and plans to perform the procedure at some time, we recommend that it be performed as the drainage procedure. The total hospitalization time will as a rule be shortened and a second convalescent period avoided. Its major drawback is the inconvenience of inserting a relative emergency into the schedule.
