RESUMEN

Isolates of Pasteurella multocida recovered from infected humans (n = 15) were characterized by traditional and molecular microbiological methods and were compared with cat-derived strains (n = 5). The most prevalent subspecies among strains from human infections was P. multocida subsp. septica (80%), and nearly all isolates showed a similar combination of virulence-associated genes. MLST analysis classified the 20 P. multocida strains into 16 different sequence types, and we assigned 11 new sequence types (ST), however, only one of those (ST 334) was shared by two human and one cat isolates. P. multocida subsp. septica strains formed a distinct phylogenetic group within the species. The strains showed resistance to erythromycin, clindamycin and sulfamethoxazole, and with two exceptions, resistance to tilmicosin was also detected. Each strain was susceptible to ampicillin, streptomycin, gentamycin, tetracycline, doxycycline, cefazolin, cefpodoxime, chloramphenicol, florfenicol and enrofloxacin. Common characteristics (virulence profile and antibiotic sensitivity pattern) shared by strains isolated from humans and cats support the view that domestic cats may serve as a potential reservoir for P. multocida.

RESUMEN

Porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) has been demonstrated to be the causal agent for postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) and porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome (PDNS). This report describes the first detection of PCV2 and associated diseases in a Romanian swine herd located in Transylvania. The clinical signs, pathological and histopathological changes observed in affected pigs were similar to those previously described for PDNS and PMWS. Polymerase chain reaction and in situ hybridisation were used for the detection of PCV2 nucleic acids from tissues and serum samples. Complete PCV2 genomes of both PMWS and PDNS cases were sequenced and analysed, and by comparing them with each other no genomic differences could be detected. The sequence analysis showed that the Romanian PCV2 was closely related to PCV2 identified in France and in Hungary.

RESUMEN

The objective of the investigations was to study the causes of abortion in sheep and goats in Hungary during a 7.5-year period. The authors investigated 246 cases of ovine and 75 cases of caprine abortions by different diagnostic methods. An infectious origin was found in 126 cases (51.2%) of ovine and 19 cases (25%) of caprine abortions. The most important cause of ovine and caprine abortions was Chlamydophila abortus infection with a prevalence of 46% and 17%, respectively. Other infections causing sheep and goat abortions were present only in 5.2% and 8% of the cases, respectively. The results obtained by different diagnostic methods are discussed.
