RESUMEN

This short-term study of the relative importance of estrogen and progesterone receptors shows that progesterone receptor correlates better than estrogen receptor with tumor recurrence regardless of lymph-node status. Life-table analysis has effectively identified only two groups of patients that may be classified by progesterone receptor status alone. Progesterone-receptor negativity correlated well with tumors of histological Grade III; estrogen-receptor positivity correlated with Grade I and II tumors. The earlier recurrence of Grade III breast tumors may explain why progesterone receptor is a better prognostic indicator than estrogen receptor in short-term studies.

RESUMEN

The histological appearances in 114 endometrial curettings from cases of dysfunctional bleeding have been analysed quantitatively by the method of Dunnill and Whitehead (1972) and Risdon and Keeling (1974). As applied to this type of specimen, the technique provides indices of both tubular volume and tubular surface to volume ratio. The histological diagnosis of endometrial hyperplasia is made from the increase in stromal and epithelial elements and the change in the pattern of the glands. These changes, on some occasions, can be difficult to detect. Quantitative analysis can be used to distinguish minor degrees of abnormal endometrial hyperplasia, in comparing serial endometrial changes in a given patient, and in comparing different menstrual cycles in dysfunctional uterine bleeding. Endometrial biopsies were collected and put in categories according to the clinical diagnosis. These biopsies were then examined morphometrically to find the volume/glandular surface and glandular/volume ratio. A significant change in these ratios was found.

RESUMEN

A case of metastasizing ependymoma is described, only the second in the British literature. The tumour, which arose in the cauda equina, spread to humerus and pleura over a period of 32 years. It is postulated that, in common with most of the previously reported cases, dissemination was a direct consequence of either surgical intervention or radiotherapy since neither the primary tumour nor its metastases shows any of the conventional morphological criteria of malignancy. The literature of similar cases is briefly reviewed.
