RESUMEN

High ambient temperatures pose serious productive challenges to poultry farmers in the tropics with adverse consequences such as reduced egg production. A study was undertaken to assess the effect of naked neck (Na) and frizzle (F) genes on the performance of F2 and F3 generations of crosses of commercial and indigenous chickens in Ghana. One thousand, five hundred and sixty-five (1,565) eggs distributed in a randomized complete block design comprising 4 genotypes and 15 hatches were used for the first study. The eggs were produced from 33 each F2 crossbred normal-feathered (nanaff), naked neck (Na), frizzle (F) and both (Na and F) alleles carrying chickens to determine the effects of these genes on fertility and hatchability. Data were analysed using the mixed model procedure of GenStat statistical software. Eggs from birds with the heat-tolerant genes, either in the single or double doses, were significantly more fertile than those from birds without the genes. Eggs of birds carrying the F allele had significantly (P < 0.05) higher hatchability than eggs from birds carrying the Na allele.Subsequently, 199 F3 crossbred chickens obtained from six hatches generated by the F2 generation were used for the evaluation of growth, egg production, haematological and blood biochemical parameters. The genotypic groups were normal feathered (nanaff), homozygous naked neck (NaNaff), heterozygous naked neck (Nanaff), homozygous frizzle (nanaFF), heterozygous frizzle (nanaFf), double homozygous naked neck-frizzle (NaNaFF) and double heterozygous naked neck- frizzle (NanaFf). The Nanaff recorded a significantly (P < 0.05) heavier day-old body weight compared to all other genotypes except the NaNaff birds. The nanaff genotype reached sexual maturity significantly earlier than all other genotypes. Hen day egg production and egg weight were also significantly higher in nanaff birds compared to birds carrying either Na or F allele, or both alleles. All birds carrying the naked neck and frizzle genes had significantly higher packed cell volume (PCV) concentration than the nanaff genotype. The Nanaff genotype recorded a significantly higher blood haemoglobin concentration compared to the nanaff, nanaFf and NaNaFF ones. However, birds carrying the thermoregulatory genes recorded significantly (P < 0.05) higher haemoglobin values except for the heterozygous frizzle. The thermoregulatory genes are of importance in chicken populations in Ghana as they positively influence percentage fertility of chicken eggs and PCV concentrations of chicken blood.

RESUMEN

Estimated breeding values of a selection index, production, durability, health, and fertility traits from Canadian Ayrshire, Jersey, and Brown Swiss bulls and cows were used to study genetic selection differentials (GSD). The bulls and cows were born from 1950 and 1960, respectively. The GSD for the 3 Canadian dairy populations were studied along the 4-path selection model: sire-to-bull (SB), dam-to-bull (DB), sire-to-cow (SC), and dam-to-cow (DC) pathways. We also determined the variations in realized GSD due to herd and herd × year of conception in addition to the effects of some environmental factors on realized GSD of the SC and DC paths. The mean realized GSD of the DB were higher than those of other paths and were increasing for lifetime performance index, 305-d milk yield, 305-d fat yield, and 305-d protein yield in all 3 dairy cattle populations. We observed no clear trends in realized GSD for type traits in all 3 dairy cattle breeds except for the apparent increasing trends in realized GSD of mammary system, dairy strength, and feet and legs in the DB and SC paths of the Ayrshire breed. No clear patterns were observed in the realized GSD of daughter fertility in the SB, DB, and SC paths of all dairy cattle breeds. Realized GSD for somatic cell score showed increasing and favorable trends in the 3 most influential selection paths (SB, DB, and SC). Year of conception influenced realized GSD of artificial insemination bulls in Ayrshire, Jersey, and Brown Swiss dairy populations. Selection emphases for the SC path generally increased with time. There was considerable variation among herds in selection pressures applied in the SC and DC pathways but no clear association with housing system or region. This study demonstrates that variations exist among herds of minor dairy cattle breeds in their selection for economically important traits. These variations offer opportunities for further improvements in these populations.

RESUMEN

Estimated breeding values for a selection index, production, durability, health, and fertility traits for Canadian Holstein bulls and cows born from 1950 and 1960, respectively, were used to define and determine realized genetic selection differentials (GSD) and generation intervals along the 4-path model of genetic improvement and the variability among herds in realized GSD. The effects of some non-genetic factors on realized GSD were also determined. The mean generation intervals of the sire-to-bull (SB), dam-to-bull (DB), sire-to-cow (SC), and dam-to-cow (DC) pathways reduced, respectively, from 9.7, 7.5, 7.7, and 4.7 years in 1980 to 2.3, 2.5, 4.8, and 3.6 years in 2016. The realized GSD of lifetime performance index and 305-d milk, fat, and protein yields for the SB and DB paths were greater than those of the SC and DC, and realized GSD for DB were increasing for all production traits and the index after 2009. With the exception of daughter fertility (DF), we found zero to negative selection in the DC path for all the traits studied, due to the minimal opportunity for selection in that path. No clear trends were observed in realized GSD of SB, DB, or SC paths for mammary system, dairy strength, feet and legs, or herd life. The realized GSD for DF in the SB, DB, and SC remained largely negative, except after the early 2000s when positive realized GSD were observed in the SB and DB paths. The realized GSD for DF in the DC path remained positive throughout the period of the study, though mostly non-significantly different from zero, except for 2014 and 2015. Realized GSD for somatic cell score in the SB, DB, and SC paths showed increasing and favorable trends. Year of conception, housing system, agricultural region, and their interactions had significant effects on realized GSD of some traits in the SC and DC paths. We also observed considerable variations in realized GSD among herds. The population mean realized GSD and those of the top and bottom 10% of herds could serve as benchmarks that individual herds could use to monitor their past selection and make changes if they are not moving in the intended direction.

RESUMEN

Milk yield traits and lactation length of two breeds of cattle raised on natural pasture with little or no supplementation were assessed. A total of 42 573 daily milk records on 98 Friesian-Sanga cows collected over a period of 10 years and 17 790 daily milk records on 72 Sanga cows spanning a 6-year period were used in the study. Traits examined for each breed were daily milk yield, total milk yield, 305-day milk yield, 305-day milk yield/day and lactation length. Friesian-Sanga cows outperformed their Sanga counterparts in all traits studied. Friesian-Sanga cows had an average daily milk yield of 1.35 +/- 0.00 kg; average total milk yield of 266 +/- 12 kg; average 305-day milk yield of 339 +/- 10 kg; average 305-day milk yield/ day of 1.11 +/- 0.03 kg and mean lactation length of 201.1 +/- 6.9 days. Average values for Sanga cows were 1.01 +/- 0.00 kg as daily milk yield; 162 +/- 12 kg as total milk yield; 244 +/- 10 kg as 305-day milk yield; 0.80 +/- 0.03 kg as 305-day milk yield/day. Mean lactation length for Sanga cows was 164.1 +/- 9.4 days. Season of calving significantly (P < 0.05) influenced daily milk yield of Friesian-Sanga cows and all traits of Sanga cows with animals calving in the major rainy season surpassing those that calved in the minor and dry seasons. Daily milk yield for both Friesian-Sanga and Sanga cows was significantly (P < 0.05) influenced by season of lactation. Daily milk yield gradually declined from second parity towards the sixth parity for Friesian-Sanga cows. A gradual increase in daily milk yield from first to third parity was observed in Sanga cows. Year of calving significantly influenced all traits for both breeds. Genetic improvement in milk yield traits and lactation length is achievable for both breeds of cattle as co-efficient of variation of traits were moderate to high.

RESUMEN

The addition of an associate to one's dental practice can be both a productive and mutually satisfying relationship. Before hiring an associate, however, the employer-dentist must first assess the financial implication for the practice. This article offers guidelines for assessing this impact and the structuring of an equitable compensation package for the associate.
