RESUMEN

The global concern over heavy metal pollution necessitates urgent measures to safeguard human health and the environment. This study focuses on employing triethylenetetramine (TETA)-functionalized MIP-206-OH (TMIP-206) as an effective adsorbent for removing Pb(II) from wastewater. TMIP-206 was synthesized via a hydrothermal method followed by functionalization with TETA. Kinetic studies demonstrate that lead removal on TMIP-206 conforms to the pseudo-second-order model, indicating an efficient removal process. Experimental results reveal that TMIP-206 aligns with the Langmuir isotherm, exhibiting a maximum removal capacity of 267.15 mg/g for lead ions. The sorption efficiency of TMIP-206 for Pb ions remains stable across six cycles, with a reduction of less than 15%. Optimal adsorption performance is observed at a pH of 6. These findings underscore the potential of TMIP-206 as an alternative for adsorbing Pb(II) from aqueous environments, addressing the global challenge of heavy metal pollution. Future research should explore the scalability and long-term stability of TMIP-206-based adsorbents to enhance their practical applicability in diverse environmental contexts and contribute to broader strategies for mitigating heavy metal contamination.

The efficacy of immunization programs is critically dependent on robust supply chain management, a complex challenge exacerbated by expanding program scopes and evolving vaccine technologies. This comprehensive review underscores the pivotal role of Resource Centers in fortifying the immunization supply chain, presenting a paradigm shift toward enhanced national and global health outcomes. Through a detailed examination of their key activities, the article elucidates how these centers catalyze improvements across various facets of supply chain management - from the integration of suitable technology technologies and specialized training programs to the development of sustainable models and advocacy for policy prioritization. This further explores the multifaceted challenges these centers confront, including funding constraints, capacity building, and infrastructural gaps, alongside the burgeoning opportunities presented by new vaccine introductions, donor interest in health system strengthening, and the potential for broadened scope beyond immunization. By weaving together examples of existing centers worldwide, the review highlights their contributions towards optimizing vaccine logistics, enhancing data management, and ultimately achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3. The insights provided offer valuable guidance for planning and sustaining resource centers, positioning them as indispensable allies in the global pursuit of universal immunization coverage.

Background and Aims: Despite the significant milestone of vaccine discovery, the spread of misinformation and pseudoscientific claims has resulted in an increasing number of people refusing vaccination in Syria. In this study, we aimed to explore fears and misconceptions towards COVID-19 vaccines among the Syrian population. Methods: We conducted a nationwide cross-sectional study between January and May 2022, using a convenience sample of 10,006 participants aged at least 18 years and living in Syria. We administered a validated online/paper questionnaire and conducted face-to-face interviews. We used SPSS software (version 26) for statistical analysis, assessing our data using frequency and χ 2 tests, with p < 0.05 considered statistically significant. Results: The majority of the participants were female 6048 (60.4%), university degree holders 7304 (73%), and from urban areas 8015 (80.1%). Approximately half of the participants 5021 (50.2%) belonged to the medical sector (49% had concerns about the vaccine). Females, university degree holders, and participants with a history of symptomatic COVID-19 were more likely to have fears about the vaccines. The main concerns about the vaccines were the rapid development, fears of blood clots, and common side effects. The prevalence of some misconceptions was relatively high, such as the belief that the vaccine is an experiment or a secret plan to reduce the population. Reliable sources are crucial to fight misleading information on social media. Conclusion: COVID-19 vaccine is key to controlling the spread, but acceptance rate is critical. High variability in vaccine acceptance and high vaccine hesitancy can affect the efforts to terminate the COVID-19 pandemic. Addressing the barriers associated with the acceptance of COVID-19 vaccination will be the cornerstone to achieving maximum vaccination coverage. It is important to consider the reasons for refusing the COVID-19 vaccine when interpreting the results of any study on vaccine attitudes among the Syrian population.

Purpose: Nonunion of fractures occurs in about 15% of all fractures causing repeated surgical interference and prolonged morbidity. We performed this systematic review to assess genes and polymorphisms influencing fractures' nonunion (FNU). Methods: We searched between 2000 and July 2022 in PubMed, EMBASE, the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, Genome Wide Association Studies (GWAS) Catalog, and the Science Citation Index, with the keywords nonunion of fractures, genetic influence, and GWAS. The exclusion criteria were review articles and correspondence. The data were retrieved to determine the number of studies, genes, and polymorphisms and the total number of subjects screened. Results: A total of 79 studies were reported on nonunion of fractures and genetic influence. After the inclusion and exclusion criteria, ten studies with 4402 patients' data were analyzed. Nine studies were case-controlled, and 1 GWAS. It was identified that patients with polymorphisms in the genes ANXA3, BMP2, CALY, CYR61, FGFR1, IL1ß, NOG, NOS2, PDGF gene, and TACR1 are prone to develop a nonunion of fractures. Conclusion: We believe that for patients who develop an early nonunion of fractures, a genetic study should be conducted for single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and genes so that alternative and more aggressive treatment can be performed to heal fractures without prolonged morbidity.

ADPKD is caused by pathogenic variants in PKD1 or PKD2, encoding polycystin-1 and -2 proteins. Polycystins are expressed in osteoblasts and chondrocytes in animal models, and loss of function is associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) and volume. However, it is unclear whether these variants impact bone strength in ADPKD patients. Here, we examined BMD in ADPKD after kidney transplantation (KTx). This retrospective observational study retrieved data from adult patients who received a KTx over the past 15 years. Patients with available dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) of the hip and/or lumbar spine (LS) post-transplant were included. ADPKD patients (n = 340) were matched 1:1 by age (±2 years) at KTx and sex with non-diabetic non-ADPKD patients (n = 340). Patients with ADPKD had slightly higher BMD and T-scores at the right total hip (TH) as compared to non-ADPKD patients [BMD: 0.951 vs. 0.897, p < 0.001; T-score: -0.62 vs. -0.99, p < 0.001] and at left TH [BMD: 0.960 vs. 0.893, p < 0.001; T-score: -0.60 vs. -1.08, p < 0.001], respectively. Similar results were found at the right femoral neck (FN) between ADPKD and non-ADPKD [BMD: 0.887 vs. 0.848, p = 0.001; T-score: -1.20 vs. -1.41, p = 0.01] and at left FN [BMD: 0.885 vs. 0.840, p < 0.001; T-score: -1.16 vs. -1.46, p = 0.001]. At the LS level, ADPKD had a similar BMD and lower T-score compared to non-ADPKD [BMD: 1.120 vs. 1.126, p = 0.93; T-score: -0.66 vs. -0.23, p = 0.008]. After adjusting for preemptive KTx, ADPKD patients continued to have higher BMD T-scores in TH and FN. Our findings indicate that BMD by DXA is higher in patients with ADPKD compared to non-ADPKD patients after transplantation in sites where cortical but not trabecular bone is predominant. The clinical benefit of the preserved cortical bone BMD in patients with ADPKD needs to be explored in future studies.

Aim Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is among the most common orthopaedic injuries. The elevated body mass index (BMI) can contribute to non-contact ACL injury. This study aims to assess the risk of ACL injury among elevated BMI population people (BMI ≥25 Kg\m2 ). Methods This is a cross sectional study that was conducted in a tertiary care centre in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. A total of 302 patients, who had an ACL reconstruction surgery in a ten-year-period (January 2008 to December 2018) were included. Results Sport related injury is significantly higher among the overweight and obese groups (p=0.002). Moreover, the combined ACL tear was higher among the overweight and obese groups (p=0.001). In univariate regression analysis for the selected baseline characteristics, it was found that individuals with higher BMI have chance to develop combined (ACL) injury 2 times higher when compared to those with isolated ACL injury (p=0.003). Also, the ACL type, mode of injury, types of injury and type of sports were statistically significant in univariate regression analysis. However, only the mode of injury was statistically significant after controlling the confounding factors. Other selected variables like type of sport, type of injury and ACL type were not significant. Conclusion Elevated BMI was associated with a higher risk of developing combined ACL tear as well as reinjured individuals.

BACKGROUND: Eosinophilic oesophagitis (EoE) is an increasingly common cause of dysphagia in both children and adults, as well as one of the most prevalent oesophageal diseases with a significant impact on physical health and quality of life. We have provided a single comprehensive guideline for both paediatric and adult gastroenterologists on current best practice for the evaluation and management of EoE. METHODS: The Oesophageal Section of the British Society of Gastroenterology was commissioned by the Clinical Standards Service Committee to develop these guidelines. The Guideline Development Group included adult and paediatric gastroenterologists, surgeons, dietitians, allergists, pathologists and patient representatives. The Population, Intervention, Comparator and Outcomes process was used to generate questions for a systematic review of the evidence. Published evidence was reviewed and updated to June 2021. The Grading of Recommendations, Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) system was used to assess the evidence and make recommendations. Two rounds of voting were held to assess the level of agreement and the strength of recommendations, with 80% consensus required for acceptance. RESULTS: Fifty-seven statements on EoE presentation, diagnosis, investigation, management and complications were produced with further statements created on areas for future research. CONCLUSIONS: These comprehensive adult and paediatric guidelines of the British Society of Gastroenterology and British Society of Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition are based on evidence and expert consensus from a multidisciplinary group of healthcare professionals, including patient advocates and patient support groups, to help clinicians with the management patients with EoE and its complications.

Background and Objective: The objective of this analysis is to report from a teaching hospital in eastern Saudi Arabia hospital based prevalence of osteopenia and osteoporosis. Methods: This is a retrospective study of all patients who underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scan between January 1, and December 31, 2018, at King Fahd Hospital of the University at Alkhobar, Saudi Arabia. Demographic data of patients, which included age, sex, diabetes mellitus status based on fasting blood sugar, hemoglobin A1C, Vitamin D level, parathormone level, and T score of the neck of femur and lumbar spine was extracted from the Quadrumed patient care system. The data was entered into database and analyzed. Results: Three hundred and one patients had a DXA scan for the year 2018, a jump of 27.2% of requests to diagnose osteoporosis. There were 55 (18.27%) were male and rest females (246). The average age for males was 65.2 ± 10.5 and females 62.9 ± 9.4 years. Using T score of the lumbar spine, 63.6% were osteoporotic in males and 52.8% in females. Conclusions: The hospital-based study shows that the prevalence of osteoporosis has significantly increased in men to 63.6%, while in postmenopausal women to 58.4%, this is high compared to the earlier reports.


Résumé Contexte et objectif: L'objectif de cette analyse est de faire rapport d'un hôpital d'enseignement dans l'hôpital de l'Arabie Saoudite est basé Prévalence de l'ostéopénie et de l'ostéoporose. INTRODUCTION: To compare the impact of an e-learning package with theoretical teaching on the ability of both graduate and undergraduate medical students to learn the management of supraventricular tachycardia. METHODS: We conducted a randomised, controlled, study at two Welsh medical schools. Participants were graduate-entry and undergraduate medical students, who were randomised (in a 1:1 ratio) to either 1 hour of training using an e-learning package or an hour of lecture-based teaching. The outcome was a comparison, within each group and between groups, of median scores achieved in assessments of knowledge through completion of preintervention, immediate post intervention and 2 weeks postintervention questionnaires. RESULTS: Of the 97 participants available for randomisation, 47 underwent teaching using the e-learning package and 50 were taught in the lecture group. Median scores were higher in the e-learning package group than the lecture group, though this difference was not statistically significant (4.00 vs 3.00; p=0.08) immediately after intervention. At 2 weeks post intervention, median scores in the e-learning package group were significantly higher than the median scores in the lecture group (4.00 vs 3.00; p=0.002). This was despite a subanalysis of the results demonstrating that subjects in the lecture group reported having seen more cases compared with those in the e-learning group (32 vs 13; p=0.002). Further, there was a significant fall in score over 2 weeks in the group receiving lecture-based teaching, but no such decrease in those using the e-learning package. CONCLUSION: E-learning seems to be the preferred method of learning and the method that confers longer retention time for both postgraduate and undergraduate medical students.

PURPOSE OF STUDY: This study examines the associations between dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT) after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) and gastrointestinal bleeding (GIB), to explore possible predictors of outcomes. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of 3342 patients who underwent PCI between 1 August 2011 and 31 December 2018 in a single centre was carried out. Oesophagogastroduodenoscopies (OGDs) for patients 12 months post-PCI were analysed. RESULTS: Blood loss occurred in 2% of all (3342) patients post-PCI within 12 months. 128 patients (63% male, mean age (SD) of 69.8 (10) years) who had PCI subsequently underwent an OGD within 12 months of the index PCI procedure. GIB occurred within the first 30 days of DAPT in 36% (n=13/36) of cases. There were no thrombotic events associated with cessation of one antiplatelet agent. Increased age, haemoglobin (Hb) ≤109 g/L and Glasgow-Blatchford score ≥8 were associated with increased 12-month mortality. An Hb drop of ≥30 g/L was a sensitive and specific marker for significant pathology and evidence of bleeding on OGD (sensitivity=0.83, specificity=0.81). CONCLUSIONS: GIB bleeding occurred infrequently in the patients post-PCI on DAPT. Risk assessment scores (such as Glasgow-Blatchford and Rockall scores) are useful tools to assess the urgency of OGD and need for endoscopic therapy.

Shilajit is used commonly as Ayurvedic medicine worldwide which is Rasayana herbo-mineral substance and consumed to restore the energetic balance and to prevent diseases like cognitive disorders and Alzheimer. Locally, Shilajit is applied for patients diagnosed with bone fractures. For safety of the patients, the elemental analysis of Shilajit is imperative to evaluate its nutritional quality as well as contamination from heavy metals. The elemental composition of Shilajit was conducted using three advanced analytical techniques (LIBS, ICP, and EDX). For the comparative studies, the two Shilajit kinds mostly sold globally produced in India and Pakistan were collected. Our main focus is to highlight nutritional eminence and contamination of heavy metals to hinge on Shilajit therapeutic potential. In this work, laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) was applied for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the Shilajit. Our LIBS analysis revealed that Shilajit samples composed of several elements like Ca, S, K, Mg, Al, Na, Sr, Fe, P, Si, Mn, Ba, Zn, Ni, B, Cr, Co, Pb, Cu, As, Hg, Se, and Ti. Indian and Pakistani Shilajits were highly enriched with Ca, S, and K nutrients and contained Al, Sr, Mn, Ba, Zn, Ni, B, Cr, Pb, As, and Hg toxins in amounts that exceeded the standard permissible limit. Even though the content of most elements was comparable among both Shilajits, nutrients, and toxins, in general, were accentuated more in Indian Shilajit with the sole detection of Hg and Ti. The elemental quantification was done using self-developed calibration-free laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (CF-LIBS) method, and LIBS results are in well agreement with the concentrations determined by standard ICP-OES/MS method. To verify our results by LIBS and ICP-OES/MS techniques, EDX spectroscopy was also conducted which confirmed the presence above mentioned elements. This work is highly significant for creating awareness among people suffering due to overdose of this product and save many human lives.

RESULTS: There were a total of 60 patients who were followed up. Three patients in Group II were removed from the analysis as they underwent total knee arthroplasty (TKA). A notably significant improvement was noticed in the ABMDC group on all scores of VAS and MKSSSF with P < 0.0001. The control group continued to be dissatisfied with the treatment they were taking. CONCLUSIONS: This study reveals that a single injection of 5 million of ABMDC was efficient in reducing the symptoms, improving the functional score and betterment of QOL.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs) exposure has been reported to have an impact on cardiovascular diseases (CVD). However, there is not much known about the cardiac tissue injury of CVD patients in relation to iAs exposure and potential role of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) of genes related to iAs metabolism, oxidative stress, endothelial dysfunction and inflammation which may play important roles in such CVD cases. In this dual center cross-sectional study, based on the exclusion and inclusion criteria, we have recruited 50 patients out of 270, who came from known arsenic-affected and- unaffected areas of mainly Chittagong, Dhaka and Rajshahi divisions of Bangladesh and underwent open-heart surgery at the selected centers during July 2017 to June 2018. We found that the patients from arsenic affected areas contained significantly higher average iAs concentrations in their urine (6.72 ± 0.54 ppb, P = 0.028), nail (529.29 ± 38.76 ppb, P < 0.05) and cardiac tissue (4.83 ± 0.50 ppb, P < 0.05) samples. Patients' age, sex, BMI, hypertension and diabetes status adjusted analysis showed that patients from arsenic-affected areas had significantly higher iAs concentration in cardiac tissue (2.854, 95%CI 1.017-8.012, P = 0.046) reflecting higher cardiac tissue injury among them (1.831, 95%CI 1.032-3.249, P = 0.039), which in turn allowed the analysis to assume that the iAs exposure have played a vital role in patients' disease condition. Adjusted analysis showed significant association between urinary iAs concentration with AA (P = 0.012) and AG (P = 0.034) genotypes and cardiac iAs concentration with AA (P = 0.017) genotype of AS3MT rs10748835. The AG genotype of AS3MT rs10748835 (13.333 95%CI 1.280-138.845, P = 0.013), AA genotype of NOS3 rs3918181 (25.333 95%CI 2.065-310.757, P = 0.002), GG genotype of ICAM1 rs281432 (12.000 95%CI 1.325-108.674, P = 0.010) and AA genotype of SOD2 rs2758331 (13.333 95%CI 1.280-138.845, P = 0.013) were found significantly associated with CVD patients from arsenic-affected areas. Again, adjusted analysis showed significant association of AA genotype of AS3MT rs10748835 with CVD patients from arsenic affected areas. In comparison to the reference genotypes of the selected SNPs, AA of AS3MT 10748835, AG of NOS3 rs3918181 and AC of rs3918188, GG of ICAM1 rs281432, TT of VCAM1 rs3176867, AA of SOD2 rs2758331 and GT of APOE rs405509 significantly increased odds of cardiac tissue injury of CVD patients from arsenic affected areas. The results showed that the selected SNPs played a susceptibility role towards cardiac tissue iAs concentration and injury among CVD patients from iAs affected areas.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had many ramifications on healthcare delivery and practice. As part of this, utilising biomarkers to risk stratify patients has become increasingly popular. During the COVID-19 pandemic the use of D-dimer has increased due to the evidence of COVID-19 induced thrombo-embolic disease. We evaluated the use of D-dimer on all hospital admissions during the peak of the pandemic and evaluated its sensitivity in diagnosing pulmonary embolic disease (PE). Patients without COVID-19 infection were as likely to have evidence of PE as their COVID-positive counterparts. However, the sensitivity of a D-dimer was higher in COVID-positive patients at a lower D-dimer level (>1,500 µg/L, sensitivity 81%, specificity 70%) than in those without clinical, immunological or radiological evidence of COVID-19 infection (D-dimer >2,000 µg/L, sensitivity 80%, specificity 76%). These data suggest higher D-dimer thresholds should be considered for the exclusion of pulmonary emboli.

The recommended daily dose of vitamin D is 2000 IU was found to be insufficient in many patients. The objective of the present study is to find whether the daily dose of vitamin D should be based on BMI. Two hundred and thirty patients with an established vitamin D deficiency (serum level of 25 Hydroxy vitamin D3 (25OHD3) of ≤20 ng/ml) and patients with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 were included in the study. Demographic data, comorbidities and BMI were recorded. Pre-treatment and post-treatment serum 25OHD3, calcium, phosphorus and parathyroid hormone (PTH) were tested at 0-, 3- and 6-month periods. Patients were treated with a standard dose of 50 000 IU of vitamin D weekly and 600/1200 mg of calcium a day. Once their level of 25OHD3 reached ≥30 ng/ml, patients were randomised into two groups. Group A received a standard recommended maintenance dose of 2000 IU daily and Group B patients received 125 IU/kg/m2 of vitamin D3. The data were entered in the database and analysed. The mean age of Group A was 50⋅74 ± 7⋅64 years compared to 52⋅32 ± 7⋅21 years in Group B. In both groups, pre-treatment vitamin D level was ≤15 ng/ml and increased to 34⋅6 ± 2⋅6 and 33⋅7 ± 2⋅4 ng/ml at the end of 3 months treatment with a dose 50 000 IU of vitamin D3 and calcium 600/1200 mg once a day for group A and group B, respectively. At 6 months, patients in Group A 25OHD3 level was 22⋅8 ± 3⋅80 and in Group B was 34⋅0 ± 1⋅85 ng/ml (P < 0⋅001). This preliminary study suggests that obese patients need higher dosage of vitamin D than the recommended dose. It is prudent that the dosage should be based on the BMI to maintain normal levels for a healthy musculoskeletal system.

BACKGROUND: The KW-2449 is a novel multikinase inhibitor that inhibits FLT3, ABL, ABL-T315I, and Aurora A. FLT3 and Aurora A kinases play an important role in the pathogenesis of multiple sclerosis (MS). KW-2449 could modulate immune cells, but the immunomodulatory effects of KW-2449 on experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) have not been investigated yet. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effects of KW-2449 on EAE mouse model. METHODS: In this study, C57BL/6 EAE mice were orally treated with (10 mg/kg/day) KW-2449 solution and compared with EAE and control mice. Following the treatment, histological analyses were performed on the brain and cerebellum to evaluate the pathological score. The gene expression levels of tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and chemokine (C-C motif) ligand 2 (CCL2) were measured using qRT-PCR. The serum levels of TNF-α, IL-6, CCL-2 and MMP-2 were determined by using quantitative enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). RESULTS: The results indicated that the clinical score, the infiltration of inflammatory cells and the demyelination in EAE mice treated with KW-2449 decreased significantly compared to control groups. KW-2449 also decreased TNF-α, IL-6, CCL-2 inflammatory cytokines, and MMP-2 in both brain mRNA expressions and serum levels of EAE mice. CONCLUSION: The KW-2449, aging as a multi-kinase inhibitor, modulates the inflammatory responses of cytokine cascades either in the brain or in plasma and reduces EAE pathogenesis manifestation.

Patients with ß-thalassemia major (ß-TM) show ineffective erythropoiesis and iron overload, which is the leading cause of mortality and organ injury. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between two iron regulatory hormones, hepcidin and erythroferrone (ERFE) levels, and iron status parameters in Iraqi patients with ß-TM. Iron status parameters and hormones were measured in 60 patients and compared with 30 healthy controls. The results indicated significant changes in different iron status parameters, while ferritin with the ∼11-fold increase showed the most change. Significant reduction in hepcidin and an increase in ERFE levels were detected in patients when compared to the control group, while no direct correlation was identified with the other measured iron status parameters. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis showed that the z-score of the composite of ERFE + ferritin has a full diagnostic ability for ß-TM. In conclusion, our findings indicated the correlation between different iron status parameters and ferritin as the leading predictor of iron overload and two main iron regulatory hormones.

Background: Recent studies have shown that ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis in rats can be reversed by infusion of osteoblasts cultured from mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). This study compares the influence of MSCs, osteoblasts, and exosomes derived from osteoblasts for the treatment of osteoporosis. Methods: Osteoporosis was induced in 40 female Sprague Dawley rats by performing ovariectomy. After 12 weeks, bone marrow was harvested and MSCs separated from bone-marrow aspirate as described by Piao et al. After 15 days, autologous osteogenically differentiated cells from the MSCs were available. Exosomes were isolated from osteoblasts by modification of the technique described by Ge et al. MSCs and osteoblasts (106 cells in 0.5 mL normal saline) and exosomes (100 µg protein) were injected into the tail veins of the animals. Animals were euthanized after 12 weeks and femurs and lumbar spines dissected and analyzed using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography. Results: When compared to the control group, osteoblast-treated animals showed significant differences in all parameters compared, with P-values ranging between <0.002 and <0.0001. Comparison among osteoblasts, MSCs, and exosomes, showed that osteoblasts had positive and statistically significant new-bone formation. The comparison for the spine was similar to the distal femur for osteoblasts. Conclusion: This study showed robust positive bone-forming changes after osteoblast injection in the distal femur and the spine when compared to controls, MSCs, and exosomes.

Background and objectives: Boxing is a popular combat sport that requires high intensity and cooperation. However, there are limited data about the influence of boxing matches on blood parameters. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the match-induced changes in the metabolic, hormonal, and inflammatory status in male elite boxers. Materials and methods: High-level 20 male boxers with more than 5 years experience in boxing voluntarily participated in this study. Venous blood samples of the boxers, before and after combat, were taken for determination of the plasma parameters. Results: Our results indicated that a 9-min boxing match caused significant increases in plasma energy fuels (glucose and lactate), metabolic hormones (insulin, adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and growth hormone), inflammatory markers (interleukin-1ß (IL-1ß), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)), muscle damage indicators (alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and aspartate aminotransferase (AST)), and oxidative stress marker (SOD). A decrease in total oxidant status (TOS) was also considered. However, there were no significant alterations in the plasma levels of androgenic hormone (free and total testosterone), anabolic hormone (IGF-1), lipids (total cholesterol, triglyceride, high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and low-density lipoprotein (LDL)), kidney function markers (creatinine and urea), and minerals (iron (Fe) and magnesium (Mg)). Conclusion: Elevations in the level of energy fuels and metabolic hormones of the boxers could be taken as a reflection of high-energy turnover during combat performance. The increases in inflammatory and tissue damage indicators may possibly be an indication of traumatic injury. Understanding the biochemical changes that occur during boxing match could be valuable to optimize the performance improvement of the athletes.
