RESUMEN

In the biomedical arena, bacterial fouling is a precursor to complications such as implant infection and nosocomial infection. These complications are further compounded by biochemical mechanisms of resistance that threaten the action of traditional antibacterial strategies. Accordingly, antibacterial property by physical, not biochemical, mechanisms of action is becoming increasingly popular and promising. The present work falls in line with this paradigm shift. Here, microtextured Ti-6Al-4V surfaces were manufactured by destructive tension at three different cross-head speeds, probed with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and multifocus optical microscopy, and treated with Staphylococcus aureus to study bacterial attachment. The fractographic study revealed the presence of dual-mode fracture, typical of Ti-6Al-4V, comprising  regions of both ductile, microvoid coalescence and brittle, cleavage faceting. Based on load-extension curves, quantitative roughness data, and qualitative SEM visualisation, it was evident that cross-head speed modulated fracture behaviour such that increased speed produced more brittle fracture whilst lower speeds produced more ductile fracture. The topography associated with ductile fracture was found to possess notable antibiofouling property due to geometric constrains imposed by the coalesced microvoids. Accordingly, fracture at low cross-head speeds (1 mm/min and 10 mm/min) yielded significant reduction in bacterial attachment, whilst fracture at high cross-head speeds (100 mm/min) did not. The greatest reduction (~72%) was achieved at a cross-head speed of 1 mm/min. These findings suggest that antibiofouling property can be elicited by fracture and further 'tuned' by fracture speed. Discovery of this novel, albeit simple, avenue for topography-mediated antibacterial property calls for further research into alternate techniques for the manufacture of 'physical antibacterial surfaces'.

RESUMEN

On-surface synthesis of conjugated polymers is made challenging by the need to promote the desired reaction while preventing or minimizing unwanted ancillary reactions that compromise the product integrity. We perform a comprehensive study of the reactions of 2,5-dichloro-3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene on coinage metal surfaces, and demonstrate that only on Ag(111) can we obtain a planar polymer product, polyethylenedioxythiophene (PEDOT).

What makes a category seem natural or intuitive? In this paper, an unsupervised categorization task was employed to examine observer agreement concerning the categorization of nine different stimulus sets. The stimulus sets were designed to capture different intuitions about classification structure. The main empirical index of category intuitiveness was the frequency of the preferred classification, for different stimulus sets. With 169 participants, and a within participants design, with some stimulus sets the most frequent classification was produced over 50 times and with others not more than two or three times. The main empirical finding was that cluster tightness was more important in determining category intuitiveness, than cluster separation. The results were considered in relation to the following models of unsupervised categorization: DIVA, the rational model, the simplicity model, SUSTAIN, an Unsupervised version of the Generalized Context Model (UGCM), and a simple geometric model based on similarity. DIVA, the geometric approach, SUSTAIN, and the UGCM provided good, though not perfect, fits. Overall, the present work highlights several theoretical and practical issues regarding unsupervised categorization and reveals weaknesses in some of the corresponding formal models.

A fulgurite is a naturally occurring glass formed when lightning hits sand, rock, or soil. The formation of fulgurites is accompanied by mineralogical and sometimes compositional changes, and may record information about the environment in which they were formed. A previous investigation using Raman point spectroscopy discovered the presence of anatase, a low-temperature polymorph of TiO(2), and polyaromatic hydrocarbons within a fulgurite. These findings indicate that there were regions within the sample that were not subjected to temperatures of 2,000 K or more that the matrix is reported to attain when struck by lightning. This paper seeks to expand the previous research by utilizing the capabilities of a new Raman spectroscopic technological development that enables rapid mapping. The entire surface area of a cross-sectioned fulgurite (approximately 40 mm x 23 mm) sample was mapped allowing several regions of polyaromatic hydrocarbons and anatase to be located. Furthermore, shocked quartz was found within the boundary regions of the fulgurite, and is proposed to have resulted from contact with vaporized material during the lightning strike. Shocked quartz is typically indicative of extraterrestrial impact, yet its discovery here suggests that its formation is not exclusive to the impact process.
