RESUMEN

Transient Fanconi syndrome without azotemia was diagnosed in a dog and was associated with ingestion of Chinese chicken jerky treats. Fanconi syndrome is a proximal renal tubular defect and a diagnosis was made based upon severe glucosuria with normoglycemia, and severe generalized aminoaciduria. The clinical signs of polyuria and polydipsia as well as the massive urinary metabolic abnormalities resolved after jerky treat withdrawal. While frequently seen in North America and Australia, this is the first report of jerky treat induced Fanconi syndrome in continental Europe. Clinicians should be aware of this potential intoxication and be vigilant for a history of jerky treat consumption in a dog with glucosuria.

RESUMEN

An adult female Bornean orangutan (Pongo pygmaeus pygmaeus) had a pruritic, vesicular skin disease, particularly of the extremities, trunk, and face. Over a 2-yr course, symptoms resolved only transiently after corticosteroid treatment. Antibiotic treatment and withdrawal of all corticosteroids resulted in complete recovery of the animal and return to normal activity patterns. On the basis of the dermal histopathologic lesions, Dermatophilus congolensis was suspected as the causative organism, although subsequent cultivation was not attempted because of the stress additional procedures would have caused to the orangutan.

RESUMEN

In 837 birds which died or were euthanatized because of their disease, blood could be taken within 12 hours before death. Blood chemistry results were compared with specific necropsy findings of different organs. The parameters aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), creatinine kinase (CK), glutamate dehydrogenase (GLDH), glucose, total protein, uric acid, urea and creatinine were measured. Possible reasons for the bad comparability of blood chemistry results and organ lesions are discussed. Glucose and creatinine were found not to be useful in a routine panel for avian patients.

RESUMEN

Because of safer anaesthesia, today endoscopy is used not only in healthy birds for sex determination. The technique of laparoscopic examination of the body cavity in combination with biopsies, tracheoscopy, exploration of the ear canal, oropharynx, esophagus and ingluvies are described. Also exploration of the proventriculus entering through an ingluviotomy is discussed. The anatomical situation is described with each entering site.
