RESUMEN

Dallisgrass (Paspalum dilatatum) is well adapted to the Black Belt physiographic region of the southeastern United States, and information on its productivity and nutritive quality as influenced by grazing management is needed. In a 2-yr grazing experiment, replicate 0.40-ha paddocks in established dallisgrass pasture were continuously stocked, or replicate 0.40-ha paddocks were subdivided into two 0.20-ha (RS2), three 0.13-ha (RS3), or four 0.10-ha (RS4) cells and rotationally stocked with yearling beef steers. Individual cells within the RS2, RS3, and RS4 treatments were stocked for 7 d followed by 7, 14, or 21 d of rest, respectively. In 2007, 3 Angus × Simmental crossbred steers (initial BW, 354 ± 6 kg) were assigned randomly to each paddock on July 16; in 2008, 3 Angus × Simmental crossbred steers (initial BW, 310 ± 6 kg) were assigned randomly to each paddock on July 14. In 2007, there was no effect (P = 0.25) of stocking treatment on ADG. Steers grazing RS4, RS2, and continuously stocked paddocks had 106 (P = 0.01), 86 (P = 0.03), and 83 (P = 0.03) kg greater total BW gain per ha, respectively, than steers grazing RS3 paddocks. In 2008, there were no differences among treatments in ADG (P = 0.43) or total BW gain per ha (P = 0.90). Correlation and regression analyses revealed positive associations between steer performance and forage concentration of CP, areal mass (kg/ha) of forage DM, and areal mass of forage CP. Results indicate that productivity and quality of dallisgrass for stocker cattle production were comparable between continuous and rotational-stocking methods.

Campylobacter is one of the most commonly reported bacterial causes of human foodborne infections in the United States. Recent evidence has demonstrated that Campylobacter is present in poultry semen and may contribute to the vertical transmission between the breeder hen and offspring. As Campylobacter is considered sensitive to oxygen and cold temperature, the objective of this study was to determine if aeration and storage temperature could reduce or eliminate Campylobacter in poultry semen. In 4 separate trials, pooled semen samples were collected from roosters or toms, diluted with a commercial poultry semen extender, and inoculated with an average of 10(7) cells/mL of a wild-type C. jejuni or C. coli semen isolate. Pooled ejaculates were then divided into 3 aeration treatments: Control (no aeration), air, or oxygen (gently bubbled for 20 min with atmospheric air or oxygen, respectively). Immediately after aeration, pooled semen samples were further divided to 3 test storage temperatures: 4, 23, or 42 degrees C. At 0, 2, 6, and 24 h of storage, samples were enumerated for Campylobacter. Aeration of the semen alone, or aeration with reduced temperatures (4 or 23 degrees C), did not reduce the amount of Campylobacter compared with the controls. Campylobacter concentrations were, however, reduced when stored at 42 degrees C for 24 h. This effect is associated with reduced sperm viability and is therefore not a practical treatment of reducing Campylobacter in semen. It appears alternative methods will be needed to eliminate Campylobacter from poultry semen.

OBJECTIVE: We performed a comparative assessment of CT and sonographic techniques used to assess appendicitis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred patients with clinically suspected acute appendicitis were examined with sonography, unenhanced focused appendiceal CT, complete abdominopelvic CT using IV contrast material, focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast material, and repeated sonography with colonic contrast material. Each sonogram was videotaped for subsequent interpretation by three radiologists and two sonographers. The mean sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, inter- and intraobserver variability, and diagnostic confidence scores of all observers were used for comparative performance assessments. The three CT examinations were filmed and interpreted separately by four radiologists. Patient discomfort was assessed on a 10-point scale for each radiologic study. Diagnoses were confirmed by pathologic evaluation of resected appendixes or clinical follow-up for a minimum of 3 months after presentation. RESULTS: Twenty-four of the 100 patients had positive findings for acute appendicitis. Both sonographic techniques had high specificity (85-89%) and comparable accuracy (73-75%) but low sensitivity (33-35%) and inter- and intraobserver variability (kappa = 0.15-0.20 and 0.39-0.42, respectively). Unenhanced focused appendiceal CT, abdominopelvic CT, and focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast material all significantly outperformed sonography (p <0.0001), with sensitivities of 78%, 72%, and 80%; specificities of 86%, 91%, and 87%; and accuracies of 84%, 87%, and 85%, respectively. Abdominopelvic CT gave the greatest confidence in cases with negative findings (p = 0.001), and focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast material gave the greatest confidence for cases with positive findings (p = 0.02). In terms of inter- and intraobserver variability, focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast material yielded the highest, and unenhanced focused appendiceal CT the lowest, agreement (interobserver kappa = 0.45 vs. 0.36 and intraobserver kappa = 0.85 vs. 0.76, respectively) (p <0.05). Colonic contrast material was unsuccessfully advanced into the cecum in 18% of patients and leaked in another 24%. Patient discomfort was greatest with focused appendiceal CT using colonic contrast material and least with unenhanced focused appendiceal CT (p <0.05). CONCLUSION: A standard abdominopelvic CT scan is recommended as the initial examination for appendicitis in adult patients. However, focused appendiceal CT with colonic contrast material material should be used as a problem-solving technique in difficult cases.

Previous research has implicated an endophytic fungus as being associated with fescue toxicity (summer syndrome) in cattle grazing Kentucky 31 tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea Schreb.) pastures. Hay and seed were harvested from Kentucky 31 pastures known to be either fungus-free or heavily infested with an endophytic fungus identified as Acremonium coenophialum Morgan-Jones and Gams. Four diets containing either 60% fungus-free seed, 60% fungus-infested seed, 85% fungus-free hay or 85% fungus-infested hay were group-fed to three steers each (avg wt 239 kg) in a 53-d feeding trial. Presence of the fungus reduced (P less than .05) daily gains (kg/d) in steers fed either the seed diets (.96 vs .20) or the hay diets (.66 vs .28). Feed intake was depressed 36% for the seed diets and 8% for the hay diets when the fungus was present. Rectal temperatures were elevated .6 C (P less than .05) for both groups receiving diets containing the fungus, but respiration rate was elevated only in the fungus-infested seed group. In vitro dry matter disappearance was not decreased by presence of the fungus. Steers receiving fungus from either seed or hay were nervous and highly excitable, which resulted in large variations in plasma epinephrine and norepinephrine concentrations. The results of this experiment further implicate an endophytic fungus as being associated with fescue toxicity.
