RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In recent years, the increasing prevalence of skin cancers, particularly malignant melanoma, has become a major concern for public health. The development of accurate automated segmentation techniques for skin lesions holds immense potential in alleviating the burden on medical professionals. It is of substantial clinical importance for the early identification and intervention of skin cancer. Nevertheless, the irregular shape, uneven color, and noise interference of the skin lesions have presented significant challenges to the precise segmentation. Therefore, it is crucial to develop a high-precision and intelligent skin lesion segmentation framework for clinical treatment. METHODS: A precision-driven segmentation model for skin cancer images is proposed based on the Transformer U-Net, called BiADATU-Net, which integrates the deformable attention Transformer and bidirectional attention blocks into the U-Net. The encoder part utilizes deformable attention Transformer with dual attention block, allowing adaptive learning of global and local features. The decoder part incorporates specifically tailored scSE attention modules within skip connection layers to capture image-specific context information for strong feature fusion. Additionally, deformable convolution is aggregated into two different attention blocks to learn irregular lesion features for high-precision prediction. RESULTS: A series of experiments are conducted on four skin cancer image datasets (i.e., ISIC2016, ISIC2017, ISIC2018, and PH2). The findings show that our model exhibits satisfactory segmentation performance, all achieving an accuracy rate of over 96%. CONCLUSION: Our experiment results validate the proposed BiADATU-Net achieves competitive performance supremacy compared to some state-of-the-art methods. It is potential and valuable in the field of skin lesion segmentation.

RESUMEN

Glycosylation is a method that enhances the functional properties of proteins by covalently attaching sugars to them. This study aimed at preparing three conjugates (WP-HG, WP-SBP, and WP-RGI) by dry heating method to research the influence of different pectin structures on the functional properties of WP and characterize properties and structures of these conjugates. The research results manifested that the degree of glycosylation (DG) of HG, SBP and RGI were 13.13 % ± 0.07 %, 23.27 % ± 0.3 % and 36.39 % ± 0.3 % respectively, suggesting that the increase of the number of branch chains promoted the glycosylation reaction. The formation of the conjugate was identified by the FT-IR spectroscopy technique. And SEM showed that WP could covalently bind to pectin, resulting in a smoother and denser surface of the conjugates. The circular dichroism analysis exhibited that the glycosylation reaction altered the secondary structure of WP and decreased the α-Helix content. This structural change in the protein spatial conformation led to a decrease in the hydrophobicity of protein surface. But the addition of pectin further regulated the hydrophilic-hydrophobic ratio on the surface of the protein, thus improving the emulsification properties of WP. In addition, the glycosylation could improve the stability of the emulsion, giving it a smaller droplet size, higher Zeta-potential and more stable properties. In a word, this study pointed out the direction for the application of different pectin structures in the development of functional properties of glycosylation products in food ingredients.

RESUMEN

Developing oxide ion conductors with new structural families is important for many energy conversion and storage techniques. Herein, a series of Ca-doped Yb3Ga5O12 garnet-type materials are prepared through a traditional solid-state reaction method, with their oxide ion conduction properties being reported for the first time. The results revealed that Ca substitution for Yb would significantly improve the conductivity of Yb3Ga5O12 from 3.57 × 10-7 S/cm at 900 °C under air to 1.66 × 10-4 S/cm, with an oxide ion transporting number of ∼0.52. The oxygen vacancy defect formation energy (∼0.127 eV) and the local structure around an oxygen vacancy were studied by atomic-level static lattice simulations based on the interatomic potential method. The oxide ion conducting mechanism was studied by the bond-valence-based method, which revealed three-dimensional pathways for oxide ion migration in both the parent and Ca-doped structures. The simulated activation energy of oxide ion migration decreased slightly from ∼0.358 eV in the parent structure to 0.346 eV in the doped one. These discoveries in the Ca-doped Yb3Ga5O12 will stimulate extensive exploitation and fundamental research on garnet-type materials.

RESUMEN

In recent years, RG-I pectin isolated by low-temperature alkaline extraction methods has attracted the attention of a large number of researchers due to its huge health benefits. However, studies on other applications of RG-I pectin are still lacking. In this study, we summarized the sources (e.g. potato pulp, sugar beet pulp, okra, apple pomace, citrus peel, pumpkin, grapefruit, ginseng, etc.), extraction methods, fine structure and applications of RG-I pectin in physiological activities (e.g. anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, anti-oxidation, immune regulation, prebiotics, etc.), emulsions, gels, etc. These neutral sugar side chains not only endow RG-I pectin with various physiological activities but the entanglement and cross-linking of these side chains also endow RG-I pectin with excellent emulsifying and gelling properties. We believe that this review can not only provide a comprehensive reading for new workers interested in RG-I pectin, but also provide a valuable reference for future research directions of RG-I pectin.

RESUMEN

Artificial intelligence gives pregnant women another avenue for receiving healthcare information. With the advancement of information and communication technology, searching online for pregnancy information has become commonplace during COVID-19. This study aimed to explore pregnant women's information-seeking behavior based on data mining and text analysis in China. Posts on maternal and infant-related websites were collected during 1 June 2020, and 31 January 2021. A total of 5,53,117 valid posts were obtained. Based on the data, we performed correlation analysis, topic analysis, and sentiment analysis. The correlation analysis showed the positive effects of population, population with a college education or above, and GDP on post counts. The topic analysis extracted six, nineteen, eighteen, thirteen, eleven, sixteen, thirteen, sixteen, nineteen, and fourteen topics in different months of pregnancy, reflecting different information needs in various pregnancy periods. The results of sentiment analysis show that a peak of the posts emerged in the second month of pregnancy and the proportion of emotionally positive posts reached its peak in the sixth month of pregnancy. The study provides important insights for understanding pregnant women's information-seeking behavior.

RESUMEN

Background: Wuling powder is a classical formula of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), which is extensively applied to treat diabetic nephropathy (DN). However, there are no related reports on systematically evaluating the efficacy of Wuling powder in the treatment of DN. Targeted at this, this study was developed. Materials and Methods: This study systematically searched related articles from nine databases, including PubMed, Cochrane Library, Embase, Web of Science, China Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), China Biomedical CD-ROM (Sino Med), Wanfang database, Vipers database (VIP), and the China Clinical Trials Registry website. The randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving Wuling Power to treat DN were included, which were published from the established data of the above databases to March 2022. In addition, the language of the studies was not restricted. Studies were meta-analyzed using the RevMan 5.4 software given in the Cochrane Collaboration Network. The treatment efficacy was measured using the weighted mean differences (WMD) and 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: 24 studies were included for the final analysis. 24 h urine volume (WMD = 357.95; 95% CI [322.83, 393.06], p < 0.00001), 24 h urine protein quantification(24 h UPQ) (WMD = -1.30; 95% CI [-1.82, -0.78], p < 0.00001), serum creatinine (Scr) (WMD = -10.17; 95% CI [-11.13, -9.21], p < 0.00001), blood urea nitrogen (BUN) (WMD = -1.62; 95% CI [-2.30, -0.93], p < 0.00001), urinary albumin excretion rate (UAER) (WMD = -24.73; 95% CI [-35.46, -13.99], p < 0.00001), fasting blood glucose (FBG) (WMD = -0.63.95% CI [-0.97, -0.30], p = 0.002), glycated hemoglobin (WMD = -0.11; 95% CI [-0.30, 0.08], p=0.26), total cholesterol (TC) (WMD = -0.63; 95% CI [-1.23, -0.04], p=0.04), triglycerides (TG) (WMD = -0.46. 95% CI [-0.70, -0.23], p=0.0001), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) (WMD = -0.32; 95% CI [0.03, 0.62], p=0.03), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (WMD = -0.57; 95% CI [-0.77, -0.37], p < 0.00001), and total effective rate (TER) (response ratio (RR) = 1.40; 95% CI [1.32, 1.48]; p < 0.00001) were concluded. The Wuling powder in the treatment of DN was statistically significant in all the above outcome indicators, and the efficacy of the treatment group was better than that of the control group. Conclusion: The results of this study provided evidence for the clinical application of Wuling powder to treat the DN, but it had to be further validated in higher-quality clinical studies.

RESUMEN

Cardiac complications are common in antiretroviral therapy-treated (ART-treated) acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients, and the incidence increases with age. Myocardial injury in ART-treated AIDS patients with a relatively longer disease duration has been evaluated. However, there is no relevant study on whether patients with a short AIDS duration have cardiac dysfunction. Thirty-seven ART-treated males with AIDS and eighteen healthy controls (HCs) were prospectively included for CMR scanning. Clinical data and laboratory examination results were collected. The ART-treated males with AIDS did not have significantly reduced biventricular ejection fraction, myocardial edema, or late gadolinium enhancement. Compared with the HCs, the biventricular volume parameters and left ventricle myocardial strain indices in ART-treated males with AIDS were not significantly reduced (all p > 0.05). ART-treated males with AIDS were divided into subgroups according to their CD4+ T-cell counts (<350 cells/µL and ≥350 cells/µL) and duration of disease (1−12 months, 13−24 months, and 25−36 months). There was no significant decrease in left or right ventricular volume parameters or myocardial strain indices among the subgroups (all p > 0.05). In Pearson correlation analysis, CD4+ T-cell counts were not significantly correlated with biventricular volume parameters or left ventricular myocardial strain indices. In conclusion, ART-treated males with AIDS receiving ART therapy with a short disease duration (less than 3 years) might not develop obvious cardiac dysfunction as evaluated by routine CMR, so it is reasonable to appropriately extend the interval between cardiovascular follow-ups to more than 3 years.

RESUMEN

In recent years, sugar beet pectin as a natural emulsifier has shown great potential in food and pharmaceutical fields. However, the emulsification performance depends on the molecular structure of sugar beet pectin, and the molecular structure is closely related to the extraction method. This review summarizes the extraction methods of pectin, structure characterization methods and the current research status of sugar beet pectin-stabilized emulsions. The structural characteristics of sugar beet pectin (such as degree of methylation, degree of acetylation, degree of blockiness, molecular weight, ferulic acid content, protein content, neutral sugar side chains, etc.) are of great significance to the emulsifying activity and stability of sugar beet pectin. Compared with traditional hot acid extraction method, ultrasonic-assisted extraction, microwave-assisted extraction, subcritical water-assisted extraction, induced electric field-assisted extraction and enzyme-assisted extraction can improve the yield of sugar beet pectin. At the same time, compared with harsh extraction conditions (too high temperature, too strong acidity, too long extraction time, etc.), mild extraction conditions can better preserve these emulsifying groups in sugar beet pectin molecules, which are beneficial to improve the emulsifying properties of sugar beet pectin. In addition, the interfacial self-assembly behavior of sugar beet pectin induced by the molecular structure is crucial to the long-term stability of the emulsion. This review provides a direction for extracting or modifying sugar beet pectin with specific structure and function, which is instructive for finding alternatives to gum arabic.

RESUMEN

The COVID-19 epidemic is influencing global population. Social media has become important platforms to acquire and exchange information during the outbreak of COVID-19. This study explores public attention on social media. Popular Weibo texts related to COVID-19 with "coronavirus" and "pneumonia" as the keywords during December 27, 2019 and May 31, 2020 were collected in our study for public attention analysis. By combining data mining and text analysis, the public attention level trend in different stages were presented. Then a correlation analysis between public attention level and COVID-19 related cases number, topic analysis, and sentiment analysis were conducted. Significant positive correlation between public attention level and COVID-19 related cases number was identified. Based on Latent Dirichlet Allocation model, topic extraction was implemented in different stages and 41 topics were identified totally. For a comprehensive understanding of public emotions, sentiment analysis was performed. This study provides valuable lessons for public response to COVID-19.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a major public health emergency. It poses a grave threat to human life and health. The purpose of the study is to investigate the chest CT findings and progression of the disease observed in COVID-19 patients. METHODS: Forty-nine confirmed cases of adult COVID-19 patients with common type, severe and critically severe type were included in this retrospective single-center study. The thin-section chest CT features and progress of the disease were evaluated. The clinical and chest imaging findings of COVID-19 patients with different severity types were compared. The CT severity score and MuLBSTA score (a prediction of mortality risk) were calculated in those patients. RESULTS: Among the 49 patients, 35 patients (71%) were common type and 14 patients (28%) were severe and critically severe type. Nearly all patients (98%) had pure ground-glass opacities (GGO) in CT imaging. Of the severe and critically severe type patients, 86% exhibited GGO with consolidation, in comparison with 54% of the patients with common type. Fibrosis presented in 79% of the severe and critically severe type patients and 43% of the common type patients. The severe and critically severe type patients were significantly more prone to experience five-lobe involvement compared to the common type patients (p = 0.002). The severe and critically severe type patients also had higher CT severity and MuLBSTA scores than the common type patients (5.43 ± 2.38 vs 3.37 ± 2.40, p < 0.001;and 10.21 ± 3.83 vs 4.63 ± 3.43, p < 0.001, respectively). MuLBSTA score was positively correlated with admittance to the intensive care unit (p = 0.005, r = 0.351). Nineteen patients underwent three times CT scan. The interval between first and second CT scan was 4[4,8] days, second and third was 3[2,4] days. There were greater improvements in the third CT follow-up findings compared to the second (p = 0.002). CONCLUSIONS: The severe and critically severe type patients often experienced more severe lung lesions, including GGO with consolidation. The CT severity score and MuLBSTA score may be helpful for the assessment of COVID-19 severity and progression. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: Chest CT has the value of evaluated radiographical features of COVID-19 and allow for dynamic observation of the disease progression. Considering coagulation disorder of COVID-19, MuLBSTA score may need to be updated to increase new understanding of COVID-19.

RESUMEN

Background: Despite an increase in the familiarity of the medical community with the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), there is presently a lack of rapid and effective risk stratification indicators to predict the poor clinical outcomes of COVID-19 especially in severe patients. Methods: In this retrospective single-center study, we included 117 cases confirmed with COVID-19. The clinical, laboratory, and imaging features were collected and analyzed during admission. The Multi-lobular infiltration, hypo-Lymphocytosis, Bacterial coinfection, Smoking history, hyper-Tension and Age (MuLBSTA) Score and Confusion, Urea, Respiratory rate, Blood pressure, Age 65 (CURB65) score were used to assess the death and intensive care unit (ICU) risks in all patients. Results: Among of all 117 hospitalized patients, 21 (17.9%) patients were admitted to the ICU care, and 5 (4.3%) patients were died. The median hospital stay was 12 (10-15) days. There were 18 patients with MuLBSTA score ≥ 12 points and were all of severe type. In severe type, ICU care and death patients, the proportion with MuLBSTA ≥ 12 points were greater than that of CURB65 score ≥ 3 points (severe type patients, 50 vs. 27.8%; ICU care, 61.9 vs. 19.0%; death, 100 vs. 40%). For the MuLBSTA score, the ROC curve showed good efficiency of diagnosis death (area under the curve [AUC], 0.956; cutoff value, 12; specificity, 89.5%; sensitivity, 100%) and ICU care (AUC, 0.875; cutoff value, 11; specificity, 91.7%; sensitivity, 71.4%). The K-M survival analysis showed that patients with MuLBSTA score ≥ 12 had higher risk of ICU (log-rank, P = 0.001) and high risk of death (log-rank, P = 0.000). Conclusions: The MuLBSTA score is valuable for risk stratification and could effectively screen high-risk patients at admission. The higher score at admission have higher risk of ICU care and death in patients infected with COVID.

RESUMEN

Background Increasing studies demonstrated that the cardiac involvements are related to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Thus, we investigated the clinical characteristics of patients with COVID-19 and further determined the risk factors for cardiac involvement in them. Methods and Results We analyzed data from 102 consecutive laboratory-confirmed and hospitalized patients with COVID-19 (52 women aged 19-87 years). Epidemiologic and demographic characteristics, clinical features, routine laboratory tests (including cardiac injury biomarkers), echocardiography, electrocardiography, chest imaging findings, management methods, and clinical outcomes were collected. Patients were divided into acute cardiac injury, with and without cardiac marker abnormities groups according to different level of cardiac markers. In this research, cardiac involvement was found in 72 of the 102 (70.6%) patients: tachycardia (n=20), electrocardiography abnormalities (n=23), echocardiography abnormalities (n=59), elevated myocardial enzymes (n=55), and acute cardiac injury (n=9). Eight patients with acute cardiac injury were aged >60 years; seven of them had ≥2 underlying comorbidities (hypertension, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular diseases, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and chronic kidney disease). Novel coronavirus pneumonia was much more severe in the patients with acute cardiac injury than in patients with nondefinite acute cardiac injury (P<0.001). Multivariate analyses showed that CRP (C-reactive protein) levels, old age, novel coronavirus pneumonia severity, and underlying comorbidities were the risk factors for cardiac abnormalities in patients with COVID-19. Conclusions Cardiac involvements are common in patients with COVID-19. Elevated CRP levels, old age, underlying comorbidities, and novel coronavirus pneumonia severity are the main risk factors for cardiac involvement in patients with COVID-19. More attention should be given to cardiovascular protection during COVID-19 treatment for mortality reduction. Registration URL: https://www.chictr.org; Unique identifier: ChiCTR2000029955.

RESUMEN

We present here a simple solvothermal method to fabricate metal-organic framework NH2-MIL-53(Al) crystals with controllable size and morphology just by altering the ratio of water in the DMF-water mixed solvent system without the addition of any surfactants or capping agents. With increasing the volume ratio of water in the mixed solvents, a series of NH2-MIL-53(Al) crystals with different sizes and morphologies were synthesized. The average size of the smallest crystal is 76 ± 20 nm, which provides us a simple and environmentally friendly way to prepare nanoscale MOFs. The largest BET surface area of these samples is 1882 m(2) g(-1) that is mainly contributed by its micropore surface area, and its corresponding micropore volume is 0.83 cm(3) g(-1), which have greatly extended its application in the fields of gas adsorption and postsynthetic modification. All these samples were characterized by SEM, XRD, N2 adsorption/desorption, TGA and FT-IR. Then a mechanism for the impact of the water ratio on the crystal size and morphology is presented and discussed.

RESUMEN

Ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) with hexagonal structure were efficiently synthesized via cooperative self-assembly of phenol/formaldehyde resol and surfactant F127 under acidic aqueous conditions. Induced by HCl, a gel phase mainly containing phenol/formaldehyde resol and F127 was obtained within several hours. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and nitrogen adsorption isotherms indicated that the synthesized samples possess 2-D hexagonal mesostructure. The influence of the synthesis conditions, including acid concentration and mass ratio of resol to F127, was investigated. When the acid concentration was fixed in the range of 0.6-2.0 M and the mass ratio of resol to F127 in the range of 3.5-4.0, highly ordered mesoporous carbon could be synthesized. The synthesized OMCs could be easily sulfonated in concentrated sulfuric acid at elevated temperature. The results indicate that the mesostructural stability and the content of the surface sulfonic acid (SO(3)H) groups depend mainly on the pyrolysis temperature of the OMCs and the sulfonation temperature, suggesting that the combination of pyrolysis and sulfonation temperature is essential for developing OMCs with high densities of SO(3)H groups.
