RESUMEN

Ceftazidime, a new parenteral cephalosporin, was given by intravenous bolus injection to 50 patients admitted to hospital with a variety of serious infections. These included septicaemia, bronchopulmonary, urinary, gastro-intestinal and soft tissue infections. The drug proved to be effective against a wide range of organisms, notably opportunistic Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections. In the 32 patients with positive cultures there was a cure rate of 85%. All Ps. aeruginosa infections were eradicated, but two relapsed post treatment in patients with recurrent urinary infections related to indwelling catheters. The drug was well tolerated and no serious side effects occurred. Two patients with salmonella septicaemia relapsed after an initial clinical response, and one of these died.

RESUMEN

Eighty patients with suspected or diagnosed bacterial infections were treated with ceftazidime. Sixty-five patients with 88 sites of infections could be assessed clinically. A cure or improvement was achieved in 61 patients (94%) with a total of 83 infection sites (94%). Failures were seen in four critically ill patients with severe underlying diseases. Eighty-six pathogens, most frequently Enterobacteriaceae, were isolated from appropriate specimens. The infecting organisms were all eradicated during therapy. In two patients reinfection with a new strain occurred. Except for a severe anaphylactic reaction in one patient, ceftazidime was well tolerated.

RESUMEN

Forty patients with acute lower respiratory tract infection requiring hospital admission were treated with ceftazidime. One patient developed acute dyspnoea after the first dose of the drug which was considered to be drug related and treatment was discontinued. All remaining patients were clinically assessed as being either cured or improved. In all cases that were bacteriologically assessable the pathogens were eradicated. One patient developed erythema multiforme after the end of ceftazidime treatment; this was considered to be possibly drug related.
