RESUMEN

The effects of pressure on the superconducting properties of a Bi-based layered superconductor La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6, which possesses a four-layer-type conducting layer, have been studied through the electrical resistance and magnetic susceptibility measurements. The crystal structure under pressure was examined using synchrotron x-ray diffraction at SPring-8. In the low-pressure regime, bulk superconductivity with a transition temperatureTcof ∼4.5 K was induced by pressure, which was achieved by in-plane chemical pressure effect owing to the compression of the tetragonal structure. In the high-pressure regime above 6.4 GPa, a structural symmetry lowering was observed, and superconducting transitions with aTc∼ 8 K were observed. Our results suggest the possible commonality on the factor essential forTcin Bi-based superconductors with two-layer-type and four-layer-type conducting layers.

RESUMEN

Polycrystalline samples of Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, and Sm) were synthesized via the solid-state reaction and characterized using synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Although all the Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 samples exhibited superconductivity at transition temperatures (Tc) within the range of 2.1-2.7 K under ambient pressure, the estimated superconducting volume fraction was small, which indicates non-bulk nature of superconductivity in those samples under ambient pressure. A dramatic increase in shielding fraction, which indicates the emergence of the bulk superconductivity was achieved by applying external hydrostatic pressures. We found that two phases, low-P phases with Tc = 2.5-2.8 K and high-P phases with Tc = 10.0-10.8 K, were induced by the pressure effect for samples with RE = La, Ce, Pr, and Nd. Pressure-Tc phase diagrams indicated that the critical pressure for the emergence of the high-P phase tends to increase with decreasing ionic radius of the doped RE ions, which was explained by the correlation between external and chemical pressure effects. According to the high-pressure X-ray diffraction measurements of Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2, a structural phase transition from tetragonal to monoclinic also occurred at approximately 1.1 GPa. Bulk superconducting phases in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 induced by the external hydrostatic pressure effect are expected to be useful for understanding the effects of both external and chemical pressures to the emergence of bulk superconductivity and pairing mechanisms in BiCh2-based superconductors.

RESUMEN

We propose an efficient way of increasing the entropy of mixing in high-entropy-alloy-type compounds, which can be achieved by multi-site alloying. As an example of this concept, we report the synthesis and observation of polycrystalline samples of new high-entropy-alloy-type metal chalcogenides (Ag,In,Pb,Bi)Te1-xSex (x = 0.0, 0.25, and 0.5) with a NaCl-type structure. The samples were synthesized using high pressure synthesis. Superconductivity with transition temperatures of 2.7, 2.5, and 2.0 K was observed with x = 0.0, 0.25, and 0.5, respectively. To investigate the multi-site alloying effect on the entropy of mixing (ΔSmix) for the examined samples, we calculated the total ΔSmix for two crystallographic sites. For the samples with x = 0.25 and 0.5, ΔSmix reaches 1.89R and 2.00R, respectively, which exceed the ΔSmix of 1.79R for a simple (single-site) high-entropy alloy containing six different elements.

RESUMEN

The bulk electronic structure of T_{d}-MoTe_{2} features large hole Fermi pockets at the Brillouin zone center (Γ) and two electron Fermi surfaces along the Γ-X direction. However, the large hole pockets, whose existence has important implications for the Weyl physics of T_{d}-MoTe_{2}, has never been conclusively detected in quantum oscillations. This raises doubt about the realizability of Majorana states in T_{d}-MoTe_{2}, because these exotic states rely on the existence of Weyl points, which originated from the same band structure predicted by density functional theory (DFT). Here, we report an unambiguous detection of these elusive hole pockets via Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) quantum oscillations. At ambient pressure, the quantum oscillation frequencies for these pockets are 988 and 1513 T, when the magnetic field is applied along the c axis. The quasiparticle effective masses m^{*} associated with these frequencies are 1.50 and 2.77 m_{e}, respectively, indicating the importance of Coulomb interactions in this system. We further measure the SdH oscillations under pressure. At 13 kbar, we detected a peak at 1798 T with m^{*}=2.86m_{e}. Relative to the oscillation data at a lower pressure, the amplitude of this peak experienced an enhancement, which can be attributed to the reduced curvature of the hole pockets under pressure. Combining our experimental data with DFT+U calculations, where U is the Hubbard parameter, our results shed light on why these important hole pockets have not been detected until now.

RESUMEN

Recently, we reported the observation of superconductivity at ~0.5 K in a La2O2M4S6-type (M: metal) layered compound La2O2Bi3AgS6, which is a layered system related to the BiS2-based superconductor system but possesses a thicker Bi3AgS6-type conducting layer. In this study, we have developed the La2O2Bi3AgS6-type materials by element substitutions to increase the transition temperature (Tc) and to induce bulk nature of superconductivity. A resistivity anomaly observed at 180 K in La2O2Bi3AgS6 was systematically suppressed by Sn substitution for the Ag site. By the Sn substitution, Tc increased, and the shielding volume fraction estimated from magnetization measurements also increased. The highest Tc (=2.3 K) and the highest shielding volume fraction (~20%) was observed for La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S6. The superconducting properties were further improved by Se substitutions for the S site. By the combinational substitutions of Sn and Se, bulk-superconducting phase of La2O2Bi3Ag0.6Sn0.4S5.7Se0.3 with a Tc of 3.0 K (Tconset = 3.6 K) was obtained.

RESUMEN

The flux pinning properties of the high temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) have been conventionally improved by creating both columnar and dot-like pinning centres into the YBCO matrix. To study the effects of differently doped multilayer structures on pinning, several samples consisting of a multiple number of individually BaZrO3 (BZO) and BaCeO3 (BCO) doped YBCO layers were fabricated. In the YBCO matrix, BZO forms columnar and BCO dot-like defects. The multilayer structure improves pinning capability throughout the whole angular range, giving rise to a high critical current density, J c. However, the BZO doped monolayer reference still has the most isotropic J c. Even though BZO forms nanorods, in this work the samples with multiple thin layers do not exhibit a c axis peak in the angular dependence of J c. The angular dependencies and the approximately correct magnitude of J c were also verified using a molecular dynamics simulation.

RESUMEN

Combining multiple emergent correlated properties such as superconductivity and magnetism within the topological matrix can have exceptional consequences in garnering new and exotic physics. Here, we study the topological surface states from a noncentrosymmetric α-BiPd superconductor by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and first-principles calculations. We observe that the Dirac surface states of this system have several interesting and unusual properties, compared to other topological surface states. The surface state is strongly anisotropic and the in-plane Fermi velocity varies rigorously on rotating the crystal about the y axis. Moreover, it acquires an unusual band gap as a function of k_{y}, possibly due to hybridization with bulk bands, detected upon varying the excitation energy. The coexistence of all the functional properties in addition to the unusual surface state characteristics make this an interesting material.

RESUMEN

The interplay between superconductivity (SC) and ferromagnetism (FM) when embedded together has attracted unprecedented research interest due to very rare coexistence of these two phenomena. The focus has been mainly put into the proximity induced effects like, coexistence of magnetism and superconductivity, higher critical current, triplet superconductivity etc. However, very little attention has been paid experimentally to the role of magnetic constituent on triggering phase slip processes in the composite films (CFs). We demonstrate that less than 1 at.% of magnetic contribution in the CFs can initiate phase slip events efficiently. Due to advanced state-of-the-art fabrication techniques, phase slip based studies have been concentrated mainly on superconducting nanostructures. Here, we employ wide mesoscopic NbGd based CFs to study the phase slip processes. Low temperature current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of CFs show stair-like features originated through phase slip events and are absent in pure SC films. Depending on the bias current and temperature, distinct regions, dominated by Abrikosov type vortex-antivortex (v-av) pairs and phase slip events, are observed. The results presented here open a new way to study the phase slip mechanism, its interaction with v-av pairs in two dimensions and hence can be useful for future photonic and metrological applications.
