RESUMEN

Fourier-transform scanning tunnelling spectroscopy (FT-STS), or quasiparticle interference, has become an influential tool for the study of a wide range of important materials in condensed matter physics. However, FT-STS in complex materials is often challenging to interpret, requiring significant theoretical input in many cases, making it crucial to understand potential artifacts of the measurement. Here, we compare the most common modes of acquiring FT-STS data and show through both experiment and simulations that artifact features can arise that depend on how the tip height is stabilized throughout the course of the measurement. The most dramatic effect occurs when a series of dI/dV maps at different energies are acquired with simultaneous constant current feedback; here a feature that disperses in energy appears that is not observed in other measurement modes. Such artifact features are similar to those arising from real physical processes in the sample and are susceptible to misinterpretation.

RESUMEN

Military personnel with traveler's diarrhea (n=202) while deployed to Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, from June to September 2002 were evaluated for pathogen-specific immune responses. Serologic and fecal immunoglobulin A (IgA) titers to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli antigens (CS6, CS3, and LT) were quite low. In contrast, subjects with Campylobacter infections had high serologic and fecal IgA responses.

RESUMEN

2429 samples of foodstuffs were examined for the presence of verocytotoxigenic Escherichia coli O157 (VTEC O157) by means of immunomagnetic separation (IMS) over a 2-year period commencing April 1997. Specimens comprised 1190 raw meats, 500 raw milks and 739 raw-milk cheeses. The meat and cheese samples were purchased from retail premises in south-east Scotland; raw milk samples were obtained directly from farms. In addition, total E. coli counts were performed on milk and cheese samples, and the pH of cheese specimens measured. The water activity (Aw) was also measured for a representative sample of each cheese type, and for all of the samples with high levels of E. coli. VTEC O157 was isolated from two samples of beef burger, both manufactured on the premises of the same butchers shop. Control studies with artificially inoculated foodstuffs demonstrated a sensitivity of detection of < 5 organisms 25 g(-1). These findings, which contrast with the results of similar studies elsewhere in the UK, suggest that other sources of infection may be important in explaining the high rates of infection with this organism in south-east Scotland.

RESUMEN

We have described two children with multiple cutaneous granular cell tumors (GCT) and have reviewed the literature. Multiple tumors of the skin are relatively rare, especially in children, with only 18 pediatric cases previously reported. Surgical excision of rapidly growing or symptomatic lesions is the treatment of choice. In these two children with multiple GCT, three lesions were excised. Specific stains for enolase and S-100 protein clearly demarcated tumor margins after surgical excision. Despite intensive investigation, the histogenesis of this tumor is still in dispute. The most tenable theory at this time is that these tumors are derived either directly from Schwann cells or from undifferentiated cells developing neural characteristics.

RESUMEN

Transforming growth factors, a group of small proteins that, under proper circumstances, induce the reversible morphologic transformation of mature cells, are produced by tumor cells and by stimulated differentiated cells. The pseudomalignant conditions that we recognize histologically may, in many instances, be explained by the action of these molecules.

RESUMEN

Verruciform xanthoma, first reported in 1971, has been thought to be primarily a lesion of oral and genital sites, the overwhelming majority occurring in the mouth. Recently a few cases have been seen in other sites in association with inflammatory linear epithelial nevus or epidermal nevus syndrome. This report is the first known example of verruciform xanthoma arising in the sun-damaged facial skin of an older patient who had no other associated cutaneous abnormalities.

RESUMEN

In 17 patients with Lyme disease, synovial specimens, obtained by synovectomy or needle biopsy, showed nonspecific villous hypertrophy, synovial cell hyperplasia, prominent microvasculature, lymphoplasmacellular infiltration, and sometimes lymphoid follicles. The larger surgically obtained specimens also showed striking deposition of fibrin in synovial stroma and a form of endarteritis obliterans. In 2 patients, spirochetes were seen in and around blood vessels by the Dieterle silver stain. Compared with 55 cases of other synovial disease, obliterative microvascular lesions were seen only in Lyme synovia, but marked stromal deposition of fibrin seemed nonspecific. These findings imply that the Lyme spirochete may survive for years in affected synovium and may be directly responsible for the microvascular injury.
