RESUMEN

In this study, highly selenite-resistant strains belonging to Brevundimonas diminuta (OK287021, OK287022) genus were isolated from previously operated single chamber microbial fuel cell (SCMFC). The central composite design showed that the B. diminuta consortium could reduce selenite. Under optimum conditions, 15.38 Log CFU mL-1 microbial growth, 99.08% Se(IV) reduction, and 89.94% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal were observed. Moreover, the UV-visible spectroscopy (UV) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analyses confirmed the synthesis of elemental selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs). In addition, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) revealed the formation of SeNPs nano-spheres. Besides, the bioelectrochemical performance of B. diminuta in the SCMFC illustrated that the maximum power density was higher in the case of selenite SCMFCs than those of the sterile control SCMFCs. Additionally, the bioelectrochemical impedance spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry characterization illustrated the production of definite extracellular redox mediators that might be involved in the electron transfer progression during the reduction of selenite. In conclusion, B. diminuta whose electrochemical activity has never previously been reported could be a suitable and robust biocatalyst for selenite bioreduction along with wastewater treatment, bioelectricity generation, and economical synthesis of SeNPs in MFCs.

PURPOSE: To evaluate how prosthetic management affects the otological and audiological state of infants with cleft lip and palate by preventing or treating otitis media (OM). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty infants with cleft lip and palate (L/P) were assigned to three equal groups according to the age of prosthetic intervention; Group I: immediately after birth, Group II: 2 months old, Group III: 5 months old. Assessment of middle ear function by tympanometry and hearing quality by auditory brainstem response (ABR) under natural sleep was conducted before and after prosthetic treatment every month till 10 months of age. Data from the study groups were compared. RESULTS: No statistically significant differences were found between Gp I and Gp II in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th months for right and left ears (p > 0.05). In the 5th month, statistically significant differences between the three groups were found in tympanometry for right (p = 0.011) and left (p = 0.024) ears also, in ABR for right (p = 0.007) and left (p = 0.011) ears. Tympanometric readings starting from the 6th till the 10th month showed no statistically significant differences between the three groups (p >0.05). The final ABR outcomes of the 10th month indicated statistically significant differences between the three groups for both ears (p = 0.027). CONCLUSIONS: Early prosthetic care could delay the development of OM, so it could potentially improve the otological and audiological state in infants with cleft L/P. However, prosthetic treatment may not be able to completely prevent or eliminate middle ear disorders.

STATEMENT OF PROBLEM: Infants with a cleft palate often experience middle ear disease, a condition of great significance, and early prosthetic management of these infants is essential. However, any correlation between prosthetic palatal obturation and middle ear function is unclear. PURPOSE: The purpose of this clinical trial was to assess whether prosthetic palatal obturation with a feeding appliance prevented or improved middle ear problems in infants with a cleft lip and palate. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Ten infants with congenital cleft lip and palate (20 ears) were referred to the Prosthodontics department immediately after birth. Assessment of the middle ear function by tympanometry as well as hearing quality by auditory brainstem response (ABR) was conducted before the prosthetic treatment (control readings). The middle ear function and hearing quality was followed up after the prosthetic treatment every month until surgical palatal closure (tenth month). The Friedman test was applied to compare data from the various study periods. When the results were significant, the Dunn post hoc test was conducted to compare the control first week readings with those of the later periods (α=.05 for all tests). RESULTS: The preprosthetic readings of tympanometry in the first week were 90% Type A and 10% Type B for both right and left ears. Readings starting from the first to the fifth month revealed no statistically significant differences compared with the first week readings (P>.05). However, tympanometry readings starting from the sixth month (20% Type A and 80% Type B) until the tenth month (90% Type B and 10% Type C) for both ears represented a statistically significant difference compared with the first week readings (P≤.05). The preprosthetic readings of ABR in the first week showed that 90% of ears had normal hearing status and 10% had mild hearing loss. Readings starting from the first until the fifth month revealed no statistically significant differences compared with the first week readings (P>.05). However, ABR readings starting from the sixth month (20% normal hearing, 70% mild hearing loss, and 10% moderate hearing loss) until the tenth month (0% normal hearing, 80% mild hearing loss, and 20% moderate hearing loss) for both ears revealed a statistically significant difference compared with the first week readings (P≤.05). CONCLUSIONS: Prosthetic palatal obturation with a feeding appliance plays a role in delaying rather than preventing the occurrence of otitis media with effusion in infants with a cleft lip and palate and could reduce the need for ventilation tubes.

Understanding the behavior of colloidal phosphorus (Pcoll) under anoxic conditions is pivotal for addressing soil phosphorus (P) mobilization and transport and its impact on nutrient cycling. Our study investigated Pcoll dynamics in acidic floodplain soil during a 30-day flooding event. The sudden oxic-to-anoxic shift led to a significant rise in pore-water Pcoll levels, which exceeded soluble P levels by more than 2.7-fold. Colloidal fractions transitioned from dispersed forms (<220 nm) to colloid-associated microaggregates (>220 nm), as confirmed by electron microscopy. The observed increase in colloidal sizes was paralleled by their heightened ability to form aggregates. Compared to sterile control conditions, anoxia prompted the transformation of initially dispersed colloids into larger particles through microbial activity. Curiously, the 16S rRNA and ITS microbial diversity analysis indicated that fungi were more strongly associated with anoxia-induced colloidal release than bacteria. These microbially induced shifts in Pcoll lead to its higher mobility and transport, with direct implications for P release from soil into floodwaters.

In part due to the resilience of cellular feedback pathways that develop therapeutic resistance to targeting the EGFR alone, using EGFR inhibitors alone was demonstrated to be unsuccessful in clinical trials. The over-activation of the signal transducer/activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) during the administration of an EGFR inhibitor is expected to play a substantial part in the failure and resistance of EGFR inhibitor treatment. Therein, we proposed a hypothesis that induced STAT3-mediated resistance to EGFR inhibition therapy could be addressed by a dual inhibition of EGFR and STAT3 method. To this end, we tried to discover new thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives "5a-o". Results from the screening on A549 and MCF7 cancer cell lines revealed that compounds 5j and 5k showed two-digit nanomolar with appropriate safety towards the WI-38 cell line. The best molecules, 5j and 5k, were subjected to γ-radiation, and their cytotoxic efficacy didn't change after irradiation, demonstrating that not having to use it avoided its side effects. Compounds 5j and 5k demonstrated the highest inhibition when their potency was tested as dual inhibitors on EGFR 67 and 41 nM, respectively, and STAT3 5.52 and 3.34 nM, respectively, proved with in silico molecular docking and dynamic simulation. In light of the results presented above, the capacity of both powerful compounds to alter the cell cycle and initiate the apoptotic process in breast cancer MCF7 cells was investigated. Caspase-8, Bcl-2, Bax and Caspase-9 apoptotic indicators were studied.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a widely used endocrine disruptor that represents a significant risk to male reproductive function. Zinc (Zn) is vital for appropriate development of testes and to guarantee optimal testicular function and spermatogenesis. Our goal was to investigate if zinc oxide (ZnO), either in conventional or nanoformulation, could safeguard adult male rats' reproductive performance against the damaging effects of BPA. Signaling expression of CYP11A1 and Nrf-2 in the testis, testicular oxidant-antioxidant status, Bax/Bcl-2 apoptotic ratio, and histological examination of various reproductive organs were all evaluated. Twenty-eight adult male albino rats were divided randomly into 4 groups (7 animals each) including the control, BPA, conventional zinc oxide (cZnO) + BPA, and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-NPs) + BPA groups. The study was extended for 2 successive months. Our findings revealed strong negative effects of BPA on sperm cell characteristics such as sperm motility, viability, concentration and abnormalities. Additionally, BPA reduced serum levels of testosterone, triiodothyronine (T3), and thyroxine (T4). Also, it evoked marked oxidative stress in the testes; elevating malondialdehyde (MDA) and reducing total antioxidant capacity (TAC). BPA significantly downregulated testicular mRNA relative expression levels of CYP11A1 and Nrf-2, compared to control. Testicular apoptosis was also prompted by increasing Bax/ Bcl-2 ratio in testicular tissue. Histopathological findings in the testes, epididymis, prostate gland, and seminal vesicle confirmed the detrimental effects of BPA. Interestingly, cZnO and ZnO-NPs significantly alleviated all negative effects of BPA, but ZnO-NPs performed better. In conclusion, our findings point to ZnO, specifically ZnO-NPs, as a viable treatment for BPA-induced testicular dysfunction.

Background: Bisphenol A (BPA), an endocrine-disrupting chemical (EDC), is ubiquitous in our environment and poses a significant threat to male fertility. Date seeds (DSs) are used in folk medicine due to their antioxidant activity. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the beneficial effects of DSs, whether in powder or nanoparticle form, against BPA-induced testicular oxidative challenges and apoptosis, aided by inspection of specific genes linked to fertility, oxidative stress and intrinsic mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis. Methods: Thirty-five adult male albino rats were equally divided into 5 groups including control, BPA, BPA + date seeds powder "DSP", BPA + date seed nanoparticle 1/10 (DSNP 1/10) and BPA + DSNP 1/20 groups. Results: TEM showed that the ball-mill method was effective to form DSNP with an average size of 20 nm. BPA significantly impaired sperm motility, morphology, viability and concentration. It also reduced serum testosterone levels and evoked marked oxidative stress in the testes. Additionally, serum levels of triiodothyronine and thyroxine were extremely reduced. Moreover, testicular mRNA relative expression levels of CYP11A1 and Nrf-2 were markedly downregulated. Testicular apoptosis was also promoted whereas Bax/Bcl-2 ratio was profoundly elevated. Histological pictures of the testes, epididymis, seminal vesicles and prostate confirmed the unfavorable effects of BPA. Surprisingly, we first demonstrated that DSs, specifically the nanoparticle form, strongly alleviated all of BPA's negative effects, with DSNP 1/20 achieving the best results. Conclusion: Therefore, DSNP in both doses could be regarded as an ideal candidate for abating the male reproductive challenges caused by BPA.

BACKGROUND: The application of exopolysaccharide-producing bacteria (EPS) in dual chamber microbial fuel cells (DCMFC) is critical which can minimize the chemical oxygen demand (COD) of molasses with bioelectricity production. Hence, our study aimed to evaluate the EPS production by the novel strain Bacillus piscis by using molasses waste. Therefore, statistical modeling was used to optimize the EPS production. Its structure was characterized by UV, FTIR, NMR, and monosaccharides compositions. Eventually, to highlight B. piscis' adaptability in energy applications, bioelectricity production by this organism was studied in the BCMFC fed by an optimized molasses medium. RESULTS: B. piscis OK324045 characterized by 16S rRNA is a potent EPS-forming organism and yielded a 6.42-fold increase upon supplementation of molasses (5%), MgSO4 (0.05%), and inoculum size (4%). The novel exopolysaccharide produced by Bacillus sp. (EPS-BP5M) was confirmed by the structural analysis. The findings indicated that the MFC's maximum close circuit voltage (CCV) was 265 mV. The strain enhanced the performance of DCMFC achieving maximum power density (PD) of 31.98 mW m-2, COD removal rate of 90.91%, and color removal of 27.68%. Furthermore, cyclic voltammetry (CV) revealed that anodic biofilms may directly transfer electrons to anodes without the use of external redox mediators. Additionally, CV measurements made at various sweep scan rates to evaluate the kinetic studies showed that the electron charge transfer was irreversible. The SEM images showed the biofilm growth distributed over the electrode's surface. CONCLUSIONS: This study offers a novel B. piscis strain for EPS-BP5M production, COD removal, decolorization, and electricity generation of the optimized molasses medium in MFCs. The biosynthesis of EPS-BP5M by a Bacillus piscis strain and its electrochemical activity has never been documented before. The approach adopted will provide significant benefits to sugar industries by generating bioelectricity using molasses as fuel and providing a viable way to improve molasses wastewater treatment.

The current study discovered fifteen new thieno[2,3-d]pyrimidine derivatives with potential anticancer action, including 5a-l, 6, and 7a-b. Results from the NCI screening revealed that compounds 5f-i and 7a significantly inhibited the proliferation of MDA-MB-468 cells at mean GI% and GI50 levels. Compared to staurosporine, these compounds (5f-i and 7a) demonstrated better safety towards typical WI-38 cells. Compounds 5g and 7a demonstrated the highest inhibition (two-digit nanomolar) when compared to erlotinib when their potency was tested on EGFR kinase. Considering the outcomes above, 5g was examined for its ability to disrupt the cell cycle with trigger apoptosis in breast cancer MDA-MB-468 cell lines. The apoptosis markers Bax, Bcl-2, Caspase-8, and Caspase-9, were detected. In silico molecular docking and dynamic simulation were used to explainthe biological activities of the most potent compound.

The protein Family with sequence similarity 210 member A (FAM210A) is a mitochondrial inner membrane protein that regulates the protein synthesis of mitochondrial DNA encoded genes. However, how it functions in this process is not well understood. Developing and optimizing a protein purification strategy will facilitate biochemical and structural studies of FAM210A. Here, we developed a method to purify human FAM210A with deleted mitochondrial targeting signal sequence using the MBP-His10 fusion in Escherichia coli. The recombinant FAM210A protein was inserted into the E. coli cell membrane and purified from isolated bacterial cell membranes, followed by a two-step process using Ni-NTA resin-based immobilized-metal affinity chromatography (IMAC) and ion exchange purification. A pulldown assay validated the functionality of purified FAM210A protein interacting with human mitochondrial elongation factor EF-Tu in HEK293T cell lysates. Taken together, this study developed a method for purification of the mitochondrial transmembrane protein FAM210A partially complexed with E.coli derived EF-Tu and provides an opportunity for future potential biochemical and structural studies of recombinant FAM210A protein.

BACKGROUND: ß-thalassaemia is a disorder caused by mutations in the ß-globin gene, leading to defective production of haemoglobins (Hb) and red blood cells (RBCs). It is characterised by anaemia, ineffective erythropoiesis, and iron overload. Patients with severe ß-thalassaemia require lifelong blood transfusions. Haemoglobin E beta-thalassaemia (HbE/ß-thalassaemia) is a severe form of ß-thalassaemia in Asian countries. More than 200 alleles have been recognised in the ß-globin region. Different geographical regions show different frequencies of allelic characteristics. In this study, the spectrum of ß-thalassaemia (ß-thal) alleles and their correlation with iron overload, in HbE/ß-thalassaemia patients, ß-thalassaemia trait, and HbE trait were studied. METHODS: Blood samples (n = 260) were collected from 65 ß-thalassaemia patients, 65 parents (fathers and/or mothers) and 130 healthy control individuals. Haematological analyses, iron profiles, and serum hepcidin levels were examined for all participants. DNA was extracted from patients' and their parents' blood samples, then subjected to PCR amplification. Multiplex amplification refractory mutation system PCR (MARMS-PCR) was conducted for eighteen primers to detect the mutations. RESULTS: There was severe anaemia present in HbE/ß-thalassaemia patients compared to their parents and healthy controls. The ferritin and iron levels were significantly increased in patients compared to their parents and healthy controls (p = 0.001). Two common mutations were detected among the patient group and three mutations were detected among their parents, in addition to seven novel mutations in HbE/ß-thalassaemia patients (explained in results). CONCLUSION: Some mutations were associated with severe anaemia in ß-thalassaemia patients. The detection of mutations is a prognostic marker, and could enhance the appropriate management protocols and improve the haematological and biochemical statuses of ß-thalassaemia patients.

Objective: Previous studies have shown that healthcare professionals rarely instruct patients about proper insulin injection techniques. This study aimed to assess the practices of insulin injection techniques among patients with diabetes treated and assess the effect of these practices on glycemic control. Patients and Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted between November 2020 and February 2021. A random systematic sampling technique was used to recruit study subjects at specialist outpatient clinics. Subjects with type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus who had been using insulin injections for at least a year were included in this study. Results: A total of 298 subjects with type 1 diabetes and 553 with type 2 diabetes participated in this study. The mean age of patients with type 1 diabetes was 20.1 ± 10.4 years. The mean age of patients with type 2 diabetes was 58.6 ± 9.5 years. The median type 1 diabetes duration was 6.0 years, and median type 2 diabetes duration was 15.0 years. About 66.8% of patients with type 1 diabetes and 69.4% of patients with type 2 diabetes were rotating insulin injection sites. Almost 36.6% of patients with type 1 diabetes and 50.5% of patients with type 2 diabetes reported using the same insulin needle more than three times. The prevalence of lipohypertrophy was 57.0% among patients with type 1 diabetes and 55.5% among patients with type 2 diabetes. The absence of lipohypertrophy, rotation of insulin injection site, and total daily insulin dose ≤50 units were all independently significantly associated with better glycemic control. Conclusion: Insulin injection techniques were suboptimal among significant proportion of patients with diabetes in Jordan. Improper insulin injection technique, especially the rotation of injection sites and lipohypertrophy formation, was associated with uncontrolled blood glucose levels. Educational interventions that focus on insulin injection techniques among Jordanian patients with diabetes are strongly recommended.

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study are to assess the prevalence of clinical and subclinical hypo- and hyperthyroidism and their associated factors among Jordanian adults. METHODS: In a cross-sectional population-based survey, a representative sample that included 3753 Jordanian adults was selected from the 12 governorates that represent the three regions of the country, in the year 2017. Sociodemographic and clinical data were obtained and blood samples were collected from all participants. Thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH), free tri-iodothyronine (FT3), free thyroxine (FT4), thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were measured to evaluate the thyroid function. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of thyroid dysfunction was 11.9%. Around 76% of patients with thyroid dysfunction were previously undiagnosed. The prevalence of hypothyroidism and subclinical hypothyroidism was 3.1 and 5.3%, respectively. The prevalence of hyperthyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism was 1.0 and 2.5%, respectively. Female preponderance which was mainly related to hypothyroid disorders was evident. The prevalence of positive TPOAb and TgAb in the study population was 14.9 and 15.3%, respectively. The prevalence of detectable TPOAb and TgAb in the euthyroid participants was10.3 and 11.9%, respectively. Logistic regression analysis revealed that female sex, age ≥ 50 years and the presence of TgAb and TPOAb were strongly associated with hypothyroidism. Hyperthyroidism was significantly associated with the presence of TPOAb and age ≥ 50 years. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of unrecognized thyroid dysfunction is high among Jordanians. A public health policy of screening high risk groups particularly those ≥50 years of age is recommended.

Nanomaterials or nanoparticles are commonly used in the cosmetics, medicine, and food industries. Many researchers studied the possible side effects of several nanoparticles including aluminum oxide (Al2O3-nps) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO-nps). Although, there is limited information available on their direct or side effects, especially on the brain, heart, and lung functions. This study aimed to investigate the neurotoxicity, cardiotoxicity, and lung toxicity induced by Al2O3-nps and ZnO-nps or in combination via studying changes in gene expression, alteration in cytokine production, tumor suppressor protein p53, neurotransmitters, oxidative stress, and the histological and morphological changes. Obtained results showed that Al2O3-nps, ZnO-nps and their combination cause an increase in 8-hydroxy-2´-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), cytokines, p53, oxidative stress, creatine kinase, norepinephrine, acetylcholine (ACh), and lipid profile. Moreover, significant changes in the gene expression of mitochondrial transcription factor-A (mtTFA) and peroxisome proliferator activator receptor-gamma-coactivator-1alpha (PGC-1alpha) were also noted. On the other hand, a significant decrease in the levels of antioxidant enzymes, total antioxidant capacity (TAC), reduced glutathione (GSH), paraoxonase 1 (PON1), neurotransmitters (dopamine - DA, and serotonin - SER), and the activity of acetylcholine esterase (AChE) in the brain, heart, and lung were found. Additionally, these results were confirmed by histological examinations. The present study revealed that the toxic effects were more when these nanoparticle doses are used in combination. Thus, Al2O3-nps and ZnO-nps may behave as neurotoxic, cardiotoxic, and lung toxic, especially upon exposure to rats in combination.

Constitutive activation of Janus tyrosine kinase-signal transducer and activator of transcription (JAK/STAT) and Phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (PI3K/Akt/mTOR) signaling pathways plays a crucial role in the development of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). Thymoquinone (TQ), one of the main constituents of Nigella sativa, has shown anti-cancer activities in several cancers. However, the inhibitory effect mechanism of TQ on leukemia has not been fully understood. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effect of TQ on JAK/STAT and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways in MV4-11 AML cells and K562 CML cells. FLT3-ITD positive MV4-11 cells and BCR-ABL positive K562 cells were treated with TQ. Cytotoxicity assay was assessed using WSTs-8 kit. The expression of the target genes was evaluated using RT-qPCR. The phosphorylation status and the levels of proteins involved in JAK/STAT and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways were investigated using Jess western analysis. TQ induced a dose and time dependent inhibition of K562 cells proliferation. TQ significantly downregulated PI3K, Akt, and mTOR and upregulated PTEN expression with a significant inhibition of JAK/STAT and PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling. In conclusion, TQ reduces the expression of PI3K, Akt, and mTOR genes and enhances the expression of PTEN gene at the mRNA and protein levels. TQ also inhibits JAK/STAT and PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways, and consequently inhibits proliferation of myeloid leukemia cells, suggesting that TQ has potential anti-leukemic effects on both AML and CML cells.

The aim of this study was to assess the effect of two types of stressors, regarding the extent of involvement of ouabain (OUA), hippocampal sodium/potassium ATPase (NKA) expression, and the hippocampal corticosterone receptors (CR)/melatonin receptors (MR) expression ratio, on the behavioral and cardiovascular responses and on the hippocampal cornu ammonis zone 3 (CA3) and dentate gyrus (DG). Thirty adult male Wistar albino rats aged 7-8 months were exposed to either chronic immobilization or a disturbed dark/light cycle and treated with either ouabain or vehicle. In the immobilized group, in the absence of hippocampal corticosterone (CORT) changes, rats were non-responsive to stress, despite experiencing increased pulse rate, downregulated hippocampal sodium/potassium pump, and enhanced hippocampal CR/MR expression ratio. Prolonged darkness precipitated a reduced upright attack posture, with elevated CORT against hippocampal MR downregulation. Both immobilization and, to a lesser extent, prolonged darkness stress resulted in histopathological and ultrastructural neurodegenerative changes in the hippocampus. OUA administration did not change the behavioral resilience in restrained rats, despite persistence of the underlying biochemical derangements, added to decreased CORT. On the contrary, with exposure to short photoperiods, OUA reverted the behavior towards a combative reduction of inactivity, with unvaried CR/MR and CORT, while ameliorating hippocampal neuro-regeneration, with co-existing NKA and MR repressions. Therefore, the extent of OUA, hippocampal NKA expression, and CR/MR expression, and subsequent behavioral and cardiac responses and hippocampal histopathology, differ according to the type of stressor, whether immobilization or prolonged darkness.

The performance of loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) for detection of Schistosoma mansoni DNA from stool and urine samples in comparison with Kato-Katz and real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was studied. After obtaining informed consent, 50 children participated in the present study and agreed to submit stool and urine samples. Stool samples were examined by Kato-Katz. Both real-time PCR and LAMP techniques were applied on stool and urine samples. The overall prevalence of S. mansoni was 46% in stool and urine samples as detected by the employed techniques, and 90% of cases had light infection intensity. The highest percentage of infection was diagnosed by real-time PCR (44%), followed by Kato-Katz (42%) and LAMP in the stool (36%), while the lowest percentages of infection were diagnosed by real-time PCR and LAMP in urine samples (24% and 14%, respectively). Kato-Katz, real-time PCR and LAMP showed 100% specificity where the sensitivity was 91.3%, 95.7% and 78.3%, respectively, in stool samples. Real-time PCR and LAMP showed lower sensitivity in urine samples. The LAMP assay is a promising technique for S. mansoni diagnosis in endemic countries of moderate and high-intensity infection. Yet, it needs further optimization, particularly in urine samples.

PURPOSE: To analyze facial asymmetry in children with unilateral congenital ptosis. METHODS: This is a retrospective review of pediatric patients undergoing ptosis repair between January 1, 2017, and December 31, 2020. Charts were reviewed to ensure a diagnosis of idiopathic unilateral congenital ptosis. Sex, age, laterality, margin to reflex distance 1, levator function, and surgical intervention were collected.Clear preoperative photos without head turn were included. Using the ImageJ software ( nih.gov ), landmarks of the periorbital region, midface, and lower face were marked, and measurements between these landmarks were taken.Two-tailed Student t tests were used to compare measurements between the ptotic and non-ptotic sides. Relationships between different measurements on the same side of the face were analyzed using paired-variable regressions. RESULTS: Forty-four patients with unilateral congenital ptosis were included. The surgical management consisted of Mullerectomy in 9 of 44 (20%), levator resection in 15 of 44 (34%), and frontalis suspension in 20 of 44 (46%) patients. The side of the face with blepharoptosis was found to more often have smaller margin to reflex distance 1 ( p < 0.001), smaller margin to reflex distance 2 ( p < 0.005), smaller horizontal palpebral fissure ( p < 0.05), shorter midface height ( p < 0.001), and a more inferiorly displaced lateral canthus (canthal angle, p < 0.001) relative to the non-ptotic side of the face. The mean head tilt of patients with right sided ptosis (1.37° right tilt) was statistically significantly different from those with left sided ptosis (0.85° left tilt; p = 0.04). CONCLUSIONS: In children with unilateral congenital ptosis, the ptotic side of the face was found to be the nondominant side of the face. Patients were also found to have ipsilateral head tilt.

STUDY QUESTION: What is the scope of literature regarding women's reproductive span in terms of definitions, trends and determinants? SUMMARY ANSWER: The scoping review found a wide variation in definitions, trends and determinants of biological, social and effective women's reproductive span. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: A woman's reproductive span refers to her childbearing years. Its span influences a woman's reproductive decisions. STUDY DESIGN SIZE DURATION: A systematic scoping review was conducted. We searched MEDLINE, PubMed, JSTOR, CINAHL, Web of Science and Scopus electronic databases from inception to January 2021 without imposing language or date restrictions. We searched unpublished sources including the Global Burden of Disease, Demographic and Health Surveys, and National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys. The list of relevant references was searched by hand. Sixty-seven reports on women's reproductive span were included in this review. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS SETTING METHODS: This scoping systematic review followed an established framework. The reporting of this scoping review followed the reporting requirements provided in the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses, Extension for Scoping Reviews. Identified records were independently screened and data were extracted. We performed conceptual synthesis by grouping the studies by available concepts of reproductive span and then summarized definitions, measures used, temporal trends, determinants, and broad findings of implications on population demographics and assisted reproduction. Structured tabulation and graphical synthesis were used to show patterns in the data and convey detailed information efficiently, along with a narrative commentary. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE: A total of 67 relevant reports on women's reproductive span were published between 1980 and 2020 from 74 countries. Most reports (42/67) were cross-sectional in design. Literature on reproductive span was conceptually grouped as biological (the interval between age at menarche and age at menopause), effective (when a woman is both fertile and engaging in sexual activity) and social (period of exposure to sexual activity). We summarized the working definitions, trends and determinants of each concept. Few articles addressed implications on demographics and assisted reproduction. LIMITATIONS REASONS FOR CAUTION: A formal assessment of methodological quality of the included studies was not performed because the aim of this review was to provide an overview of the existing evidence base regardless of quality. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS: The review produced a comprehensive set of possible definitions of women's reproductive span, trends, and potential determinants. Further advancement of these findings will involve collaboration with relevant stakeholders to rate the importance of each definition in relation to demography and fertility care, outline a set of core definitions, identify implications for policy, practice or research and define future research opportunities to explore linkages between reproductive spans, their determinants, and the need for assisted reproduction.
