RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Lung cancer, especially non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), poses a significant health challenge globally due to its high mortality. Afatinib, a second-generation epidermal growth factor receptor-tyrosine kinase inhibitor (EGFR-TKI), has shown superior efficacy over traditional chemotherapy in NSCLC treatment. However, issues like secondary resistance and adverse effects call for alternative therapies. HAD-B1, comprising 4 herbal medicines, has shown promise in lung cancer treatment in both preclinical and clinical settings. This study assesses the combination of HAD-B1 and Afatinib in advanced NSCLC patients to potentially improve outcomes by addressing the limitations of current EGFR-TKI therapies. METHOD: A randomized, open-label trial evaluated the efficacy and safety of HAD-B1 with Afatinib in 90 EGFR-mutation-positive NSCLC patients. Participants were divided into treatment and control groups, receiving Afatinib with or without HAD-B1. The study focused on the initial dose maintenance rate and disease control rate (DCR) of Afatinib, alongside secondary outcomes like survival rates and quality of life, under continuous safety monitoring. RESULTS: Among the 90 participants, no significant difference was found in initial dose maintenance (60.98% in the treatment group vs 52.50% in the control, P = .4414) or DCR (80.49% vs 90.00%, P = .2283). Secondary outcomes like PFS, TTP, and OS showed no notable differences. However, physical functioning significantly improved in the treatment group (P = .0475, PPS group). The control group experienced higher rates of adverse events of special interest and adverse drug reactions (P = .01), suggesting HAD-B1 with Afatinib might enhance physical function without increasing adverse effects. CONCLUSION: Combining HAD-B1 with Afatinib potentially improves quality of life and reduces adverse events in advanced NSCLC patients. Further research is necessary to confirm the long-term benefits of this combination therapy, aiming to advance NSCLC treatment outcomes. BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of CRISPR/Cas9-mediated A4GALT suppression in rescuing endothelial dysfunction in Fabry disease (FD) endothelial cells (FD-ECs) derived from human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs). METHODS: We differentiated hiPSCs (WT (wild-type), WTC-11), GLA-mutant hiPSCs (GLA-KO, CMC-Fb-002), and CRISPR/Cas9-mediated A4GALT-KO hiPSCs (GLA/A4GALT-KO, Fb-002-A4GALT-KO) into ECs and compared FD phenotypes and endothelial dysfunction. We also analyzed the effect of A4GALT suppression on reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation and transcriptome profiles through RNA sequencing. RESULTS: GLA-mutant hiPSC-ECs (GLA-KO and CMC-Fb-002) showed downregulated expression of EC markers and significantly reduced α-GalA expression with increased Gb-3 deposition and intra-lysosomal inclusion bodies. However, CRISPR/Cas9-mediated A4GALT suppression in GLA/A4GALT-KO and Fb-002-A4GALT-KO hiPSC-ECs increased expression levels of EC markers and rescued these FD phenotypes. GLA-mutant hiPSC-ECs failed to form tube-like structure in tube formation assays, showing significantly decreased migration of cells into the scratched wound area. In contrast, A4GALT suppression improved tube formation and cell migration capacity. Western blot analysis revealed that MAPK and AKT phosphorylation levels were downregulated while SOD and catalase were upregulated in GLA-KO hiPSC-ECs. However, suppression of A4GALT restored these protein alterations. RNA sequencing analysis demonstrated significant transcriptome changes in GLA-mutant EC, especially in angiogenesis, cell death, and cellular response to oxidative stress. However, these were effectively restored in GLA/A4GALT-KO hiPSC-ECs. CONCLUSIONS: CRISPR/Cas9-mediated A4GALT suppression rescued FD phenotype and endothelial dysfunction in GLA-mutant hiPSC-ECs, presenting a potential therapeutic approach for FD-vasculopathy.

RESUMEN

We generated a human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) line (CMCi014-A-78) expressing a GFP reporter in the 3'-UTR region of the KLOTHO locus using CRISPR/Cas9-mediated homologous recombination to screen for candidates regulating KLOTHO. The established cell line exhibits a normal karyotype, typical stem cell morphology, expression of pluripotency markers, and the ability to differentiate into the three germ layers. Consequently, this hiPSC line could serve as a valuable resource for screening KLOTHO regulators in hiPSC-derived target cells or organoids.

BACKGROUND: The indications, benefits, and outcomes of percutaneous transluminal renal artery intervention (PTRI) remain controversial. The study purpose was to evaluate the long-term outcomes of PTRI in clinical practice. METHODS: A retrospective review of 217 subjects (254 renal arteries; mean age, 59.8 years) who underwent PTRI based on medical database. RESULTS: The most common cause of renal artery stenosis was atherosclerosis in 217 (85.4%), followed by Takayasu arteritis (TA) in 23 (9.1%), fibromuscular dysplasia in five (2.0%) and others in nine (3.5%). Mean follow-up duration was 5.7 ± 3.7 years. The first restenosis rate was 7.5% (n = 19; highest in TA: n = 9, 47.4%) and second restenosis occurred in six arteries (five TAs, one fibromuscular dysplasia). Follow-up blood pressure improved from 142.0/83.5 to 122.8/73.5 mmHg (P < 0.001). There was no change within 5 years' follow-up in estimated glomerular filtration rate (P = 0.44), whereas TA changed from 69.8 ± 20.5 to 84.2 ± 17.9 mL/min/1.73 m² (P = 0.008). Progressive renal dysfunction was related to diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral artery obstructive disease on multivariate analysis with hazard ratios (95% confidence intervals) of 2.24 (1.21-4.17), 2.54 (1.33-4.84), and 3.93 (1.97-7.82), respectively. CONCLUSIONS: PTRI was associated with a blood pressure reduction. Despite a higher rate of restenosis, patients with TA showed significant improvement in estimated glomerular filtration rate. Diabetes mellitus, chronic kidney disease, and peripheral artery obstructive disease were related with progressive renal dysfunction after PTRI.

Anticancer chemo-immunotherapy has gained considerable attention across various scientific domains as a prospective approach for the comprehensive eradication of malignant tumors. Recent research has particularly been focused on traditional anthracycline chemo drugs, such as doxorubicin and mitoxantrone. These compounds trigger apoptosis in tumor cells and evoke immunogenic cell death (ICD). ICD is a pivotal initiator of the cancer-immunity cycle by facilitating the release of damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). The resultant DAMPs released from cancer cells effectively activate the immune system, resulting in an increase in tumor-infiltrating T cells. In this study, we have innovated a co-delivery strategy involving folate-modified liposomes to deliver doxorubicin and monophosphoryl lipid A (MPLA) simultaneously to tumor tissue. The engineered liposomes exploit the overexpression of folate receptors within the tumor tissues. Delivered doxorubicin initiates ICD at the tumor cells, further enhancing the immunogenic stimulus. Additionally, MPLA helps T cell priming by activating antigen-presenting cells. This intricate interplay culminates in a synergistic effect, ultimately resulting in an augmented and potentiated anticancer chemo-immunotherapeutic liposomal treatment.

Background: ST-T segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is a critical condition that requires rapid diagnosis and treatment. Recently, various ECG recording devices have been developed. In this study, we aim to determine the utility of a 6-lead handheld ECG recording device to shorten the time taken for the diagnosis of inferior wall STEMI. Methods and Design: HINT-MI is an investigator-derived, observational, prospective study that will evaluate the ability of a handheld 6-lead ECG device to diagnose acute inferior wall STEMI. Patients who have undergone coronary angiography for STEMI or for other reasons will be enrolled in the study. This study aims to evaluate sensitivity and specificity of a handheld 6-lead ECG device by the level of agreement with a standard 12-lead ECG for diagnosing inferior wall STEMI. Further, we will determine whether the use of the handheld device can reduce the time needed for reperfusion treatment through faster diagnosis. Conclusions: This study aims to investigate the feasibility of a handheld 6-lead ECG device for diagnosing inferior wall STEMI to reduce the time required to diagnose inferior wall STEMI and to allow timely treatment.

Plants of the Asteraceae family have been cultivated worldwide for economic, medicinal, and ornamental purposes, including genera such as Aster, Helianthus, and Cosmos. Numerous studies examined their secondary metabolites; however, those of Aster × chusanensis, which is a natural hybrid species in South Korea, are unclear, and optimized propagation methods should be identified. We analyzed phenolic acid concentrations in each part of Aster × chusanensis through HPLC. Further, we investigated the growth characteristics and secondary metabolite concentrations under various growth temperatures using division propagation, followed by growing at 20, 25, and 30 °C in a growth chamber. Chlorogenic acid was the primary compound, which was particularly high in the leaves. The growth characteristics did not differ significantly between temperatures, and 30 °C was most efficient for phenolic acid biosynthesis. Our results provide valuable information on optimized propagation and secondary metabolite concentrations under different temperatures of Aster × chusanensis.

Patients with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBDs), including ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), often have concomitant mental disorders such as depression and anxiety. Therefore, a bidirectional approach involving the gut and brain axes is necessary for the prevention and treatment thereof. In this study, we explored the potential of Poncirus trifoliata extract (PT), traditionally known for its neuroprotective effects against gastrointestinal diseases, as a natural treatment agent for IBD in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. Oral administration of PT ameliorated weight loss and inflammatory responses in mice with DSS-induced colitis. Furthermore, PT treatment effectively restored the colon length and ameliorated enterocyte death by inhibiting DSS-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated necroptosis. The main bioactive components of PT, poncirin and naringin, confirmed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight (UPLC-qTOF), can be utilized to regulate necroptosis. The antidepressant-like effects of PT were confirmed using open field test (OFT) and tail suspension test (TST). PT treatment also restored vascular endothelial cell integrity in the hippocampus. In the Cornu Ammonis 1 (CA1) and dentate gyrus (DG) regions of the hippocampus, PT controlled the neuroinflammatory responses of proliferated microglia. In conclusion, PT, which contains high levels of poncirin and naringin, has potential as a bidirectional therapeutic agent that can simultaneously improve IBD-associated intestinal and mental disorders.

Background: We retrospectively evaluated the usefulness of an elevated glucose-to-lymphocyte ratio (GLR) as a sensitive prognostic biomarker of disease-specific survival in 338 patients who underwent surgical resection of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Methods: The optimal GLR cutoff value was determined using the method of Contal and O'Quigley. Patient demographics, clinical information, and imaging data were analyzed to identify preoperative predictors of long-term survival outcomes. Results: Elevated GLR correlated significantly with aggressive tumor biologic behaviors, such as a high carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 level (p = 0.003) and large tumor size (p = 0.011). Multivariate analysis identified (1) GLR > 92.72 [hazard ratio (HR) = 2.475, p < 0.001], (2) CA 19-9 level > 145.35 (HR = 1.577, p = 0.068), and (3) symptoms (p = 0.064) as independent predictors of long-term, cancer-specific survival. These three risk factors were used to group patients into groups 1 (0 factors), 2 (1-2 factors), and 3 (3 factors), which corresponded to significantly different 5-year overall survival rates (50.2%, 34.6%, and 11.7%, respectively; p < 0.001). Conclusions: An elevated preoperative GLR is associated with aggressive tumor characteristics and is an independent predictor of poor postoperative prognosis in patients with PDAC. Further prospective studies are required to verify these findings.

In this study, a Y2O3 insulator was fabricated via the sol-gel process and the effect of precursors and annealing processes on its electrical performance was studied. Yttrium(III) acetate hydrate, yttrium(III) nitrate tetrahydrate, yttrium isopropoxide oxide, and yttrium(III) tris (isopropoxide) were used as precursors, and UV/ozone treatment and high-temperature annealing were performed to obtain Y2O3 films from the precursors. The structure and surface morphologies of the films were characterized via grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction and scanning probe microscopy. Chemical component analysis was performed via X-ray spectroscopy. Electrical insulator characteristics were analyzed based on current density versus electrical field data and frequency-dependent dielectric constants. The Y2O3 films fabricated using the acetate precursor and subjected to the UV/ozone treatment showed a uniform and flat surface morphology with the lowest number of oxygen vacancy defects and unwanted byproducts. The corresponding fabricated capacitors showed the lowest current density (Jg) value of 10-8 A/cm2 at 1 MV/cm and a stable dielectric constant in a frequency range of 20 Hz-100 KHz. At 20 Hz, the dielectric constant was 12.28, which decreased to 10.5 at 105 Hz. The results indicate that high-quality, high-k insulators can be fabricated for flexible electronics using suitable precursors and the suggested low-temperature fabrication methods.

Phytopathogenic Fusarium species causing root and stem rot diseases in susceptible soybean (Glycine max (L.) Merrill) are a major threat to soybean production worldwide. Several Fusarium species have been reported to infect soybean plants in the Republic of Korea, including F. solani, F. oxysporum, F. fujikuroi, and F. graminearum (Cho et al., 2004; Choi et al., 2019; Kang et al., 2020). During the nationwide survey of soybean diseases in 2015, soybean plants showing symptoms of leaf chlorosis, wilting, and shoot death were found in soybean fields in Seosan, Chungnam. Fusarium isolates were obtained from the margins of sterilized necrotic symptomatic and asymptomatic regions of the stem tissues of diseased samples by culturing on potato dextrose agar (PDA). To examine the morphological characteristics, isolates were cultured on PDA at 25°C in the darkness for 10 days. Colonies produced white aerial mycelia with apricot pigments in the medium. Macroconidia were hyaline, slightly curved in shape with 3 or 4 septa, and their average length and width were 34.6± 0.56 µm (31.4 to 37.8 µm) and 4.7±0.16 µm (4.1 to 5.8 µm), respectively (n = 20). Microconidia were elongated, oval with 0 or 1 septum, and their average length and width were 11.4±0.87 and 5.2±0.32 µm, respectively (n = 20). The colonies and conidia exhibited morphological similarities to those of F. falciforme (Xu et al., 2022). Using the primers described by O'Donnell et al. (2008), identity of a representative strain '15-110' was further confirmed by sequencing portions of two genes, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) and the second largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2). The two sequences (GenBank accession No. OQ992718 and OR060664) of 15-110 were 99% similar to those of two F. falciforme strains, 21BeanYC6-14 (GenBank accession nos. ON375419 and ON331931), and 21BeanYC6-16 (GenBank accession nos. ON697187 and ON331933). To test the pathogenicity, a single-spore isolate was cultured on carnation leaf agar (CLA) at 25℃ for 10 days. Pathogenicity test was performed by root-cutting assays using 14-day-old soybean seedlings of 'Daewon' and 'Taekwang'. Ten-day-old mycelia of 15-110 were collected from the CLA plates by scraping with distilled water, and the spore suspension was filtered and diluted to 1 × 106 conidia/mL. The roots of the soybean seedlings were partially cut and inoculated by soaking in the diluted spore suspension for two hours. The seedlings were then transplanted into 12 cm plastic pots (11 cm in height) and grown in a growth chamber at 25°C, 14h light/10h dark for 2 weeks. The infected plants exhibited wilting, observed brown discoloration on the root, and eventually died within 2 weeks, whereas the control plants inoculated with sterile water remained healthy. F. falciforme 15-110 was reisolated from infected plants, but not from the uninoculated controls. The morphology of the re-isolated fungus on PDA and its target gene sequences were identical to those of the original colony. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of root rot in soybean caused by F. falciforme in the Republic of Korea. Fusarium spp. induce a range of diseases in soybean plants, including root rot, damping-off, and wilt. Given the variable aggressiveness and susceptibility to fungicides among different Fusarium species, it is imperative to identify the Fusarium species posing a threat to soybean production. This understanding is crucial for developing a targeted and tailored disease management strategy to control Fusarium diseases.

Herein, sol-gel-processed Y2O3 resistive random-access memory (RRAM) devices were fabricated. The top electrodes (TEs), such as Ag or Cu, affect the electrical characteristics of the Y2O3 RRAM devices. The oxidation process, mobile ion migration speed, and reduction process all impact the conductive filament formation of the indium-tin-oxide (ITO)/Y2O3/Ag and ITO/Y2O3/Cu RRAM devices. Between Ag and Cu, Cu can easily be oxidized due to its standard redox potential values. However, the conductive filament is easily formed using Ag TEs. After triggering the oxidation process, the formed Ag mobile metal ions can migrate faster inside Y2O3 active channel materials when compared to the formed Cu mobile metal ions. The fast migration inside the Y2O3 active channel materials successfully reduces the SET voltage and improves the number of programming-erasing cycles, i.e., endurance, which is one of the nonvolatile memory parameters. These results elucidate the importance of the electrochemical properties of TEs, providing a deeper understanding of how these factors influence the resistive switching characteristics of metal oxide-based atomic switches and conductive-metal-bridge-filament-based cells.

Developing new plant varieties plays a crucial role in competitiveness in the agricultural and food industries and enhancing food security. Daehong (DH) is a new variety of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge (CP); however, its physiological functions and potential as a nutraceutical ingredient remain unknown. Here, the efficacy of DH on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) was investigated using dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis mice, and its relative pharmacological effects were analyzed against CP. DH improved colitis-induced weight loss, colon shortening, and inflammatory responses and reduced intestinal permeability. The reactive oxygen species (ROS)-mediated necroptotic signal that triggers enterocyte cell death in DSS-induced colitis was effectively controlled by DH, attributed to epicatechin. DSS-induced gut dysbiosis was recovered into a healthy gut microbiome environment by DH, increasing beneficial bacteria, like Akkermansia muciniphila, and changing harmful bacteria, including Bacteroides vulgatus and Peptostreptococcaceae. DH shows potential as a dietary or pharmaceutical ingredient to promote gut health and to prevent and treat IBD.

RESUMEN

Fusarium species are widespread soilborne pathogens that can cause damping-off, root rot, and wilting in soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merrill], subsequently leading to significant yield suppression. Several Fusarium spp. have already been documented for their pathogenicity on soybean plants in the Republic of Korea. The nationwide monitoring of soybean diseases continues to identify new pathogenic Fusarium spp. In 2016, five plant samples at R3-R4 growth stages, showing symptoms of wilting in the upper parts and root rot, were collected in Suwon, Gyeonggi, Republic of Korea. Fungal colonies were obtained from the diseased root samples, with the surface sterilized in 1% sodium hypochlorite for 2 min, rinsed thrice with sterile distilled water, and placed on water agar at 25°C. Five isolates were collected and purified by single-spore isolation. The fungal mycelium was subsequently cultivated on potato dextrose agar for ten days. The isolates produced abundant, aerial, and white mycelium and became purple in old cultures. Macroconidia were slender, falcate to almost straight, usually 3 to 5 septated, and thin-walled. Microconidia were formed in chains from polyphalides, clavate or oval, usually single-celled with a flattened base. These characteristics of isolates were consistent with the description of F. proliferatum (Leslie and Summerrell 2006), and the representative isolate 16-19 was selected for molecular identification to confirm its identity as F. proliferatum. Two evolutionarily conserved genes, the translation elongation factor 1-alpha (EF-1α) and the second-largest subunit of RNA polymerase II (RPB2) genes, were partially amplified using the primers described by O'Donnell et al. (2008), resulting in nucleotide sequences of 680 and 382 base pairs, respectively. These two sequences (GenBank accession numbers: OQ992720 and OR060666) showed 100 and 99.5% identity to the EF-1α and RPB2 of F. proliferatum A40 (GenBank accession numbers: KP964907 and KP964842). For the Petri-dish pathogenicity assay (Broders et al. 2007), five surface-sterilized seeds were placed on water agar media with either sterile water or actively growing '16-19' culture. After 7 days of incubation in a growth chamber (25°C; 12-hour photoperiod), brown lesions were observed on the roots of the inoculated plants, while no symptoms were observed in the sterile water-treated controls. The experiment was conducted three times. For root-cut pathogenicity assay, conidial suspension (1×106 conidia/ml) of the isolate '16-19' was prepared with harvested mycelia cultured on PDA for 10 days with sterile water. The roots of 10-day-old soybean seedlings were partially cut and soaked in either the suspension or sterile water for 2 hours. The seedlings were transplanted into 12 cm plastic pots (11 cm in height) and grew in a greenhouse (26 ± 3°C, 13-h photoperiod). The experiment followed a completely randomized design with three replicates (i.e. three plants in a pot), and it was repeated twice. The inoculated plants began to wilt 7 days after inoculation, while the sterile water-treated controls remained healthy. Ten days after inoculation, all plants were collected, washed under running tap water, and evaluated for the presence and severity of root rot using a 0-4 scale (Chang et al. 2015). The inoculated plants exhibited reduced vigor and developed dark brown lesions on their roots. F. proliferatum was reisolated from symptomatic root tissues of the infected plants, while not from those of the controls. Its colony and spores were morphologically identical to those of the original isolate. F. proliferatum was previously reported as a causative agent of soybean root rot in the United States (Díaz Arias et al. 2011) and Canada (Chang et al. 2015). This is the first report of soybean root rot caused by F. proliferatum in the Republic of Korea. This finding implies that F. proliferatum may potentially threaten soybean production in the Republic of Korea and suggests that effective disease management strategies should be established for soybean protection against the disease, along with continuous surveillance.

The initial electrical characteristics and bias stabilities of thin-film transistors (TFTs) are vital factors regarding the practical use of electronic devices. In this study, the dependence of positive bias stress (PBS) instability on an initial threshold voltage (VTH) and its origin were analyzed by understanding the roles of slow and fast traps in solution-processed oxide TFTs. To control the initial VTH of oxide TFTs, the indium oxide (InOx) semiconductor was doped with aluminum (Al), which functioned as a carrier suppressor. The concentration of oxygen vacancies decreased as the Al doping concentration increased, causing a positive VTH shift in the InOx TFTs. The VTH shift (∆VTH) caused by PBS increased exponentially when VTH was increased, and a distinct tendency was observed as the gate bias stress increased due to a high vertical electric field in the oxide dielectric. In addition, the recovery behavior was analyzed to reveal the influence of fast and slow traps on ∆VTH by PBS. Results revealed that the effect of the slow trap increased as the VTH moved in the positive direction; this occured because the main electron trap location moved away from the interface as the Fermi level approached the conduction band minimum. Understanding the correlation between VTH and PBS instability can contribute to optimizing the fabrication of oxide TFT-based circuits for electronic applications.

Taurine is ubiquitously distributed in mammalian tissues, with the highest levels in the brain, heart, and leukocytes. Taurine reacts with hypochlorous acid (HOCl) to produce taurine chloramine (Tau-Cl) via the myeloperoxidase (MPO) system. In this study, we elucidated the antioxidative and protective effects of Tau-Cl in astrocytes. Tau-Cl increased the expression and nuclear translocation of nuclear factor E2-related factor (Nrf2) and the expression of Nrf2-regulated antioxidant genes, including heme oxygenase 1 (HO-1). Nrf2 activity is negatively regulated by Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1). Tau-Cl decreased the level of the reduced thiol groups of Keap1, resulting in the disruption of the Keap1-Nrf2 complex. Consequently, Tau-Cl rescued the H2O2-induced cell death by enhancing HO-1 expression and suppressing reactive oxygen species. In conclusion, Tau-Cl confers protective effects in astrocytes by disrupting the Keap1-Nrf2 complex, thereby promoting Nrf2 translocation to the nucleus, wherein it binds to the antioxidant response element (ARE) and accelerates the transcription of antioxidant genes. Therefore, in astrocytes, the activation of the Keap1-Nrf2-ARE pathway by Tau-Cl may increase antioxidants and anti-inflammatory mediators as well as other cytoprotective proteins, conferring protection against brain infection and injury.

BACKGROUND: Despite the significant increase in cardiovascular events in women after menopause, studies comparing postmenopausal women and men are scarce. METHODS: We analyzed data from a nationwide, multicenter, prospective registry and enrolled 2412 patients with stable chest pain who underwent elective coronary angiography. Binary coronary artery disease (b-CAD) was defined as the ≥50% stenosis of epicardial coronary arteries, including the left main coronary artery. RESULTS: Compared with the men, postmenopausal women were older (66.6 ±â€…8.5 vs. 59.5 ±â€…11.4 years) and had higher high-density lipoprotein cholesterol levels (49.0 ±â€…12.8 vs. 43.6 ±â€…11.6 mg/dl, P  < 0.01). The prevalence of diabetes did not differ significantly ( P  = 0.40), and smoking was more common in men than in postmenopausal women ( P  ≤ 0.01). At enrollment, b-CAD and revascularization were more common in men than in postmenopausal women (50.3% vs. 41.0% and 14.4% vs. 9.7%, respectively; both P  < 0.01). However, multivariate analyses revealed that revascularization [odds ratio (OR): 0.72; 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.49-1.08] was not significantly related to sex and a similar result was found in age propensity-matched population (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.52-1.24). During the follow-up period, the secondary composite cardiovascular outcomes were lower in postmenopausal women than in men (OR: 0.55; 95% CI: 0.31-0.98), also consistent with the result using the age propensity-mated population (OR: 0.33; 95% CI: 0.13-0.85). CONCLUSION: Postmenopausal women experienced coronary revascularization comparable to those in men at enrollment, despite the average age of postmenopausal women was 7 years older than that of men.Postmenopausal women exhibit better clinical outcomes than those of men if optimal treatment is provided.

While the average value measurement approach can successfully analyze and predict the general behavior and biophysical properties of an isogenic cell population, it fails when significant differences among individual cells are generated in the population by intracellular changes such as the cell cycle, or different cellular responses to certain stimuli. Detecting such single-cell differences in a cell population has remained elusive. Here, we describe an easy-to-implement and generalizable platform that measures the dielectrophoretic cross-over frequency of individual cells by decreasing measurement noise with a stochastic method and computing ensemble average statistics. This platform enables multiple, real-time, label-free detection of individual cells with significant dielectric variations over time within an isogenic cell population. Using a stochastic method in combination with the platform, we distinguished cell subpopulations from a mixture of drug-untreated and -treated isogenic cells. Furthermore, we demonstrate that our platform can identify drug-treated isogenic cells with different recovery rates.

In this paper, we propose for the first time a self-refreshing mechanism in a junctionless field-effect transistor (JLFET) based on one-transistor dynamic random-access memory (1T-DRAM) with a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) structure. The self-refreshing mechanism continuously creates holes by appropriately generating impact ionization during the holding process through the application of an appropriate operation bias voltage. This leads to self-refreshing, which prevents the recombination of holes. When using the self-refreshing mechanism for the proposed device, the sensing margins were 15.4 and 12.7 µA/µm at 300 and 358 K, respectively. Moreover, the device achieved an excellent performance retention time of >500 ms, regardless of the temperature of the 1T-DRAM with a single gate. Furthermore, cell disturbance analysis and voltage optimization were performed to evaluate the in-cell reliability of the proposed device. It also showed excellent performance in terms of energy consumption and writing speed.
