RESUMEN

High pressure was used to investigate the stability of the non-Fermi liquid (NFL) state, observed in electrical resistivity of uranium-based band metamagnet UCoAl in a pure form (paramagnet) or with Fe substitution (ferromagnetic ground state), both in a single-crystal form. By combining the pressure variations of magnetization and resitivity in these materials the phase diagram for UCoAl had been constructed. The band metamagnet transforms into the ferromagnetic state as the critical metamagnetic field is reduced to zero by the lattice expansion analogous to the negative pressure. Within the same diagram, the increasing hydrostatic pressure drives the critical metamagnetic field upwards while reducing the magnetization increment at the transition. The NFL state persists to about 4-5 GPa. Although spin fluctuations play an important role in the character of UCoAl, they do not exhibit any criticality in the sense of divergence of parameters describing the resistivity around the Ferro-NFL phase transition, which is of the first order type.

RESUMEN

We have examined for the first time the relationship between the expression of PAPP-A metalloproteinase and insulin-like growth factors (IGF-I, IGF-II, VEGF) and transcription factors (NF-kappaB, HIF-1) playing an important role in pathogenesis of cancer. We also demonstrated a positive association between the level of PAPP-A metalloproteinase and the level of growth (VEGF and IGF-I) and transcription factors (NF-kappaB p50, NF-kappaB p65, HIF-1alpha). The current findings suggest an important role of PAPP-A in regulation of bioavailability of IGF-I, VEGF, activated forms of NF-kappaB, and alpha-subunits of HIF-1 in endometrial tumors.

RESUMEN

An electron cyclotron resonance charge breeder for the Californium rare ion breeder upgrade (CARIBU), a new radioactive beam facility for the Argonne Tandem Linac Accelerator System (ATLAS), has been constructed and commissioned. Charge breeding efficiencies up to 15.6% have been realized for stable beams with a typical breeding time of 10 ms∕charge state. The CARIBU system has been undergoing commissioning tests utilizing a 100 mCi (252)Cf fission source. A charge breeding efficiency of 14.8 ± 5% has been achieved for the first radioactive beam of (143)Cs(27+).

RESUMEN

The crystal structure and magnetic properties of CeNiH(3.7) were studied by means of powder x-ray diffraction, specific heat, and dc and ac magnetization techniques. It was established that hydrogenation stabilizes the 4f(1) state of Ce and turns CeNi-H into a dilute Kondo system with T(K) = 3.7 K. The Kondo screening in CeNiH(3.7) is suppressed by the applied magnetic field, although it still affects the properties of CeNiH(3.7) at 14 T, as indicated by the enhanced γ-coefficient of electronic specific heat, which remains more than twice as large as in the precursor compound CeNi. Its zero-field value is as high as 1890 mJ (mol K(2))(-1). Hydrogenation acts primarily as the negative pressure agent in CeNiH(3.7), while the role of H-metal bonding is secondary.

RESUMEN

The mixtures of two spin-gap compounds IPA-Cu(ClxBr1-x)3 are studied by electron paramagnetic resonance and magnetization processes [M(H)]. From electron paramagnetic resonance spectra, the symmetry of the spin-gap state breaks down, even for x=0.99. From M(H) curves for x=0.95 and 0.92, however, spin gaps survive below mu0Hc1=10+/-1 T, and the M(H) slopes bend at mu0Hc3=40+/-1 T, below the saturation field Hc2. Such a curvature suggests an exotic phase transition: Bose-Einstein condensation of spin triplets occurs at Hc1

RESUMEN

A terawatt accumulator (TWAC) accelerator/storage ring complex with the laser ion source is in progress at ITEP. The new injector I4 based on the radio frequency quadrupole (RFQ) and interdigital H-mode (IH) linear accelerator is under construction. The front end of the new TWAC injector consists of a laser ion source, an extraction system, and a low energy beam transport (LEBT). The KOBRA3-INP was used for the simulation and optimization of the ion source extraction system. The optimization parameter is the maximum brightness of the beam generated by the laser ion source. Also the KOBRA3-INP code was used for LEBT investigation. The LEBT based on electrostatic grid lenses is chosen for injector I4. The results of the extraction system and LEBT investigations for ion beam matching with RFQ are presented.

RESUMEN

For the past four years a joint research and development effort designed to develop steady state, intense ion sources has been in progress with the ultimate goal to develop ion sources and techniques that meet the two energy extreme range needs of meV and hundreads of eV ion implanters. This endeavor has already resulted in record steady state output currents of high charge state of antimony and phosphorus ions: P(2+) [8.6 pmA (particle milliampere)], P(3+) (1.9 pmA), and P(4+) (0.12 pmA) and 16.2, 7.6, 3.3, and 2.2 pmA of Sb(3+)Sb(4+), Sb(5+), and Sb(6+) respectively. For low energy ion implantation, our efforts involve molecular ions and a novel plasmaless/gasless deceleration method. To date, 1 emA (electrical milliampere) of positive decaborane ions was extracted at 10 keV and smaller currents of negative decaborane ions were also extracted. Additionally, boron current fraction of over 70% was extracted from a Bernas-Calutron ion source, which represents a factor of 3.5 improvement over currently employed ion sources.

RESUMEN

Cases are described of chronic zoster encephalitis presenting with the leading progressive focal epilepsy syndrome. The clinical presentation of the trouble can include both general cerebral signs and those of the focal affection of the central nervous system only. The progressive course and duration of remission suggest to us a persisting infection manifesting against the background of immune deficiency.

RESUMEN

Studies on the epidemiology of infections caused by Herpes simplex virus, cytomegalovirus and Epstein-Barr virus in different age groups of the population of the Republic of Belarus, carried out over the period of many years, are summarized. The frequency of clinical manifestations of different forms of herpetic viral pathology in newborns, children and adults in different regions of the republic was studied. More frequent cases of the most severe clinical forms of herpetic viral infections (encephalitides, generalized infection) were noted in persons having immunodeficient states of different etiology, as well as among the population residing on the territory with unfavorable radiation conditions as a consequence of the catastrophe in the Chernobyl nuclear electric power station. For further study of the specific features of the epidemiology of herpetic obligatory registration of all cases of herpetic viral infections, starting from January 1, 1996, was introduced.

RESUMEN

A clinical picture of herpetic stomatitis was studied in 173 newborns, 122 of these preterm and 51 full-term ones, aged 2 to 43 days. Herpesvirus origin of the disease was proved in 68 out of 77 examinees with stomatitis (88.31 +/- 3.66%) by virological and immunofluorescent methods. The authors conclude that herpetic stomatitis in newborns is usually a result of ante- and perinatal infection, with intrauterine infection occurring in 37.57 +/- 3.68% cases.

RESUMEN

Clinical (n = 137) and virological (n = 50) analysis of the course of herpetic stomatitis in children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia was carried out. 97.8 +/- 1.4% of cases were relapses of a chronic herpetic infection, 73.8 +/- 3.7% of cases ran a medium severe or severe course. Herpetic stomatitis in children suffering from acute lymphoblastic leukemia was characterized by the following features: 1) a high risk of infection generalization; 2) progressive necrosis of tissues in a state of leukopenia; 3) infiltration at the site of necrosis; 4) tissue anemia; and 5) risk of hemorrhage from necrotic sites.
