Distinctive features of diffusion-controlled radiation defect recombination in stoichiometric magnesium aluminate spinel single crystals and transparent polycrystalline ceramics.

MgAl2O4 spinel is important optical material for harsh radiation environment and other important applications. The kinetics of thermal annealing of the basic electron (F, F+) and hole (V) centers in stoichiometric MgAl2O4 spinel irradiated by fast neutrons and protons is analyzed in terms of diffusion-controlled bimolecular reactions. Properties of MgAl2O4 single crystals and optical polycrystalline ceramics are compared. It is demonstrated that both transparent ceramics and single crystals, as well as different types of irradiation show qualitatively similar kinetics, but the effective migration energy Ea and pre-exponent D0 are strongly correlated. Such correlation is discussed in terms of the so-called Meyer-Neldel rule known in chemical kinetics of condensed matter. The results for the irradiated spinel are compared with those for sapphire, MgO and other radiation-resistant materials.

The use of artrofoon in the treatment of ankylosing spondyloarthritis.

In patients with ankylosing spondyloarthritis, artrofoon produced a more potent antiinflammatory effect than nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs. The study demonstrated a positive effect of artrofoon on clinical and laboratory parameters, good tolerability of the preparation, and the absence of negative effects on the hepatic and renal functions. Being added to complex therapy, artrofoon led to a decrease in the dose of nonsteroidal antiinflammatory drugs.

New molecular complexes of heterocyclic bis-adducts with bacterial lectins: synthesis and structure-activity relationship studies.

A strongly antitumour effect has been discovered for lectins of Bacillus bacteria [Bacillus subtilis 668(1 + 2)IMV, Bacillus polymyxa 102(1 + 2) KGU] and for their molecular complexes with some heterocyclic bis-adducts of unsubstituted benzimidazole and 6-methyluracile for the first time. These were tested on the tumours: Lymphosarcoma Plissa, Sarcoma 45, Carcinosarcoma Yokera 256. A new convenient method for the preparation of the heterocyclic bisadducts of imidazole, benzimidazole, uraciles with 1,1,1-trifluoro-2-bromo-2-chloroethane is described. The reactions are catalysed by the 18-crown-6-complex.

The pattern of response of the inferior colliculus of the cat during the movement of a sound source.

During the application of a train of clicks simulating the movement of a sound source, evoked potentials (EP) of the inferior colliculus gradually changed their amplitude and form ("the movement effect") in 82% of the instances tested. The expression of the ipsilateral movement effect was on the average 1.5 times greater than the contralateral. The movement effect was observed over a wide range of velocities; but, in 65% of the instances, the effect was observed at movement velocities not less than 3.5 rad/sec. Velocities higher than 6.8 rad/sec were most effective in 78% of the instances. Differences in responses were discovered in 26% of the instances involving opposite directions of sound source movement. The movement effect depended substantially upon the site of the EP sampling.
