RESUMEN

Water molecules confined in nanoscale spaces of 2D graphene layers have fascinated researchers worldwide for the past several years, especially in the context of energy storage applications. The water molecules exchanged along with ions during the electrochemical process can aid in wetting and stabilizing the layered materials resulting in an anomalous enhancement in the performance of supercapacitor electrodes. Engineering of 2D carbon electrode materials with various functionalities (oxygen (─O), fluorine (─F), nitrile (─C≡N), carboxylic (─COOH), carbonyl (─C═O), nitrogen (─N)) can alter the ion/water organization in graphene derivatives, and eventually their inherent ion storage ability. Thus, in the current study, a comparative set of functionalized graphene derivatives-fluorine-doped cyanographene (G-F-CN), cyanographene (G-CN), graphene acid (G-COOH), oxidized graphene acid (G-COOH (O)) and nitrogen superdoped graphene (G-N) is systematically evaluated toward charge storage in various aqueous-based electrolyte systems. Differences in functionalization on graphene derivatives influence the electrochemical properties, and the real-time mass exchange during the electrochemical process is monitored by electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM). Electrogravimetric assessment revealed that oxidized 2D acid derivatives (G-COOH (O)) are shown to exhibit high ion storage performance along with maximum water transfer during the electrochemical process. The complex understanding of the processes gained during supercapacitor electrode charging in aqueous electrolytes paves the way toward the rational utilization of graphene derivatives in forefront energy storage applications.

INTRODUCTION: Leptospirosis and dengue are two significant public health concerns in tropical and subtropical regions, often resulting in severe forms of disease and fatality. This study addresses the pressing public health issues of leptospirosis and dengue in the Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, India. Both diseases pose significant health risks and are relatively understudied in this region, making it essential to investigate their prevalence and clinical presentations for targeted healthcare planning. AIM: The primary aim is to determine the frequency of leptospirosis and dengue among febrile illness cases to understand the epidemiological patterns and assess co-infection rates in Dakshina Kannada. METHOD: Between 2020 and 2021, serum samples suspected of leptospirosis were tested using IgM ELISA (n = 1629) and the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) (n = 92) for leptospirosis, while dengue was tested using NS1Ag and IgM antibodies ELISA (n = 1415). Data were collected through medical records and patient interviews. Seasonal trends, gender, and age distributions were analyzed. RESULT: The study found a significant prevalence of leptospirosis (21 %) and dengue (10 %) among febrile illness cases in the study area, with a 1.3 % co-infection rate. Clinically, fever was common to both diseases, but leptospirosis also frequently exhibited symptoms such as abdominal pain, myalgia, and jaundice. MAT screening revealed a predominance of anti-leptospiral antibodies against the Djasiman, Pyrogenes, Hurstbridge, Hebdomadis, and Grippotyphosa serogroups in Dakshina Kannada. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the urgent need for focused public health interventions, improved diagnostic tools, and targeted epidemiological studies to manage these diseases. The findings underscore the necessity of enhancing diagnostic capabilities and public health awareness, particularly considering the significant health risks posed by leptospirosis and dengue in the region.

Introduction: Increase in the number of primary shoulder arthroplasty has led to an increase in the number of revisions which presents many complex challenges and often has inferior outcomes. Materials and Methods: Data was collected retrospectively, and patients were classified using Dines classification. Comprehensive case reviews were done to identify preoperative and intra-operative challenges. The primary outcome measure was Oxford shoulder score (OSS). The secondary measures were range of motion (ROM) and patient satisfaction (very satisfied, satisfied, not satisfied or worse). Results: A total of 32 patients were identified with a mean age of 67.64 years and the most common cause of revision was a combination of bone and soft tissue failure (39.3%). All patients (n=8) with hemiarthroplasty had rotator cuff deficiency while patients with resurfacing had both rotator cuff failure and bony erosion. Four patients needed a proximal humeral osteotomy and six patients needed allograft reconstruction of the glenoid for bone loss. Twenty-one shoulders were revised to reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA), 2 to anatomical TSA and 5 were left with cement spacer in situ. Mean duration of follow-up was 41.6 months. Mean OSS at the last follow-up was 26.88 with statistically significant improvement in ROM. There was no statistical difference in clinical outcomes (p>0.05) based on the type of primary prosthesis or cause of revision. A total of 70% patients were pain free. Patients with infection had inferior outcomes with a mean OSS of 17. Conclusion: Management of patients with failed shoulder arthroplasty is often challenging but has good clinical outcome except in infections.

The calcium ferrite nanoparticles were made by the sol-gel process. X-ray diffraction, a scanning electron microscope, and UV-vis spectroscopy were used to analyze the material. There is an orthorhombic phase in the space group Pnma. There were four techniques used to calculate the average crystallite size. Using ImageJ software, the particles were aggregated and their size was ascertained. Using energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, the composition of the material was ascertained. 2.29 eV was determined to be the band gap. Vibrating test magnetometer (VSM) provided an explanation for the materials' magnetic property. A decreased band gap energy is responsible for the 90% degradation of malachite green dye at a concentration of 15 mg/L in 150 min, with a four-cycle reusability.


Calcium ferrite nanoparticles were successfully synthesized by sol­gel assisted combustion method using leaf extract of Brassica oleracea as fuel.To the best of the author's knowledge, no such case study that reports the synthesis of calcium ferrite nanoparticles by using leaf extract of Brassica oleracea is previously reported in academic literature.The method is cost-effective and convenient without the use of any chemical fuel agents.The synthesized prepared material efficiently removes malachite green dye, commonly used in industries for dyeing silk and nylon, from the solution.More than 90 % removal efficiency for MB.The material displayed excellent stability and reusability for dyes adsorption.Results were validated with pseudo-first-order kinetic model.

Rationale: Cancrum oris, also known as noma, is a rare and rapidly progressing gangrenous infection affecting the oral cavity, commonly seen in malnourished children. We discuss the clinical presentation, diagnostic dilemma and management in a 54-year-old male human immunodeficiency virus-positive patient with oral ulceration clinically resembling squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Patient Concerns: The patient had severe oral ulceration with pain and difficulty eating food. Diagnosis: Histopathological examination was misleading as it revealed features akin to early invasion of SCC. Immunohistochemistry findings were not in favour of SCC. Treatment: Antiretroviral therapy was started owing to the decreased CD4 cell count. Outcomes: Lesions began to show signs of healing on follow-up. Take-away Lessons: This case aims to highlight the unique challenges of diagnosing and emphasises the importance of considering opportunistic infections in immunocompromised patients presenting with oral ulcerations to prevent misdiagnosis and maltreatment.

Introduction: Calcaneal fractures are rare injuries constituting 2% of all fractures. Fractures of calcaneum correspond to nearly 60-75% of the tarsal bone fractures. The calcaneum is the most commonly fractured tarsal bone 90% occur in males between 21 and 45 years of age. The calcaneal fracture may be extra-articular (sparing the subtalar joint) and intra-articular involving the subtalar joint. Intra-articular fractures account for approximately 75% of calcaneal fractures and have been associated with poor functional outcomes. In this study, we aim to assess the functional outcome of internal fixation in displaced intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Materials and Methods: A prospective interventional study was conducted on patients with only intra-articular calcaneal fractures admitted to Chettinad Hospital and Research Institute, Kelambakkam during the period from May 1, 2022, to February 29, 2024, and a total of 32 patients were considered. The functional outcome was assessed by the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Ankle Hindfoot Scoring System. Results: The average age of the patients in our study was 39 years of which all were male. Fall from height is the most common mode of injury. The right calcaneum is more commonly involved than the left. The mean duration of hospital stay was around 10 days. The fracture classification was based on the sanders and Essex-Lopresti classification of which 17 patients were sanders type 3 and 13 patients were sanders type 2 and 1 patient was sanders type 4. The mean time for radiological union is 12 weeks. The Bohler's angle and Gissane's angle preoperatively 16.16 ± 8.87 and 121.48 ± 7.47 restored to near normal values after fixation 27.77 ± 6.02 and 113.485 ± 44, respectively. Heel height and heel width restored to near normal values of (pre-operative heel height - 24.74 ± 3.71 and heel width - 39.97 ± 4.11 and post-operative heel height - 31.55 ± 3.38 and heel width - 34.0 ± 3.1), respectively. The most common complications were wound-related complications (superficial wound infection - 9.7%, deep wound infection - 3.2%, and wound margin necrosis and wound dehiscence 6.4%) and the most common late complications were complex regional pain syndrome - 9.7% and subfibular lateral impingement with peroneal tendinitis - 6.5%. AOFAS grading of functional outcome had shown good to excellent results in 83.8% (26 patients) of the cases. The mean AOFAS score was 83.39 in our study. Conclusion: The present study shows that open reduction and internal fixation give superior radiographic results as shown by the restoration of Bohler's and Gissane's angle and height and width of the calcaneus to near normal values, indicating anatomical restoration of calcaneal shape. The functional outcome by AOFAS score showed good to excellent results in most of the patients with minimal wound complications.

Introduction: The knee joint primarily allows for flexion and extension and is essentially a hinge joint. The knee joint, like all hinge joints, is strengthened by collateral ligaments - one on each side of the joint. Objective: Our study sought to investigate potential correlations between arthroscopy and magnetic resonance imaging (MRl) examination in the diagnosis of traumatic diseases of the knee. Methods and Materials: A prospective study was conducted on 30 persons who showed signs of having traumatic knee disease. Following a comprehensive evaluation of the patient s medical history and current state of health, we opted to undergo an arthroscopic evaluation and knee MRL. Results: The sensitivity of the MRI was 93.87%, the specificity was 91.54%, the accuracy was 92.50%, and the negative predictive value was 95.58% when compared to arthroscopic inspection as the gold standard. Conclusion: This study demonstrates that MRIs frequently misdiagnose individuals with multiple knee injuries or fail to detect a lesion while doing a diagnostic evaluation. Therefore, if the MRI comes out normal, there is no reason to deny the patient arthroscopy. Due to this MRI flaw, researchers have determined that arthroscopy can be performed following a comprehensive clinical assessment without the need for an MRI.

Collections of persistently moving active particles are an example of a nonequilibrium heat bath. One way to study the nature of nonequilibrium fluctuations in such systems is to follow the dynamics of an embedded probe particle. With this aim, we study the dynamics of an anisotropic inclusion embedded in a bath of active particles. By studying various statistical correlation functions of the dynamics, we show that the emergent motility of this inclusion depends on its shape as well as the properties of the active bath. We demonstrate that both the decorrelation time of the net force on the inclusion and the dwell time of bath particles in a geometrical trap on the inclusion have a nonmonotonic dependence on its shape. We also find that the motility of the inclusion is optimal when the volume fraction of the active bath is close to the value for the onset of motility induced phase separation.

Introduction Thalassemia is a widely prevalent monogenic hematological disorder found worldwide. It exists in two forms: alpha- and beta-thalassemia. Alterations in the hemoglobin subunit beta (HBB) gene cause beta-thalassemia, with missense and point mutations affecting beta-globin synthesis. Consequently, genetic screening for beta-thalassemia is essential for genetic counseling, carrier screening, and prenatal diagnosis. Aim and objective This study aims to examine and identify mutations in the exon 1 region of the HBB gene in beta-thalassemia patients from the Vijayapura region. Methods This study involved 47 clinically diagnosed children with beta-thalassemia from a hospital in Vijayapura, India. Detailed clinical histories of all patients were recorded. Genomic DNA was extracted from the blood samples of these patients and subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using exon-specific primers for the HBB gene. The PCR products were then sequenced using the capillary-based Sanger sequencing method to identify mutations in the HBB gene. Results A total of 47 clinically diagnosed beta-thalassemia patients were included in the study, comprising 30 males and 17 females, aged between one and 20 years. Sequencing analysis of exon 1 in the beta-globin gene identified 17 beta-thalassemia variants. The most common mutation observed was T>G, G>C, C>A, and C>T in the exon 1 region of the HBB gene.  Conclusion This study identifies the pattern of beta-thalassemia mutations, aiding in the prevention of the disorder through prenatal diagnosis and genetic counseling. Mutations can alter codon sequences, affecting protein production. Research highlights the importance of a primary prevention program to analyze mutations and sequence variations at the molecular level, thereby helping to address numerous genetic disorders.

Limonene, a dietary monocyclic monoterpene commonly found in citrus fruits and various aromatic plants, has garnered increasing interest as a gastrointestinal protectant. This study aimed to assess the effects of limonene on intestinal epithelial barrier function and investigate the involvement of cannabinoid receptor type-1 (CB1R) in vitro. Additionally, the study focused on examining the metabolomic changes induced by limonene in the intestinal epithelial cells (Caco-2). Initial analysis of transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) revealed that both l-limonene and d-limonene, isomers of limonene, led to a dose- and time-dependent increase in TEER in normal cells and those inflamed by pro-inflammatory cytokines mixture (CytoMix). Furthermore, both types of limonene reduced CytoMix-induced paracellular permeability, as demonstrated by a decrease in Lucifer yellow flux. Moreover, d-limonene and l-limonene treatment increased the expression of tight junction molecules (TJs) such as occludin, claudin-1, and ZO-1, at both the transcriptional and translational levels. d-Limonene upregulates E-cadherin, a molecule involved in adherens junctions (AJs). Mechanistic investigations demonstrated that d-limonene and l-limonene treatment significantly inhibited CB1R at the protein, while the mRNA level remained unchanged. Notably, the inhibitory effect of d-limonene on CB1R was remarkably similar to that of pharmacological CB1R antagonists, such as rimonabant and ORG27569. d-limonene also alters Caco-2 cell metabolites. A substantial reduction in ß-glucose and 2-succinamate was detected, suggesting limonene may impact intestinal epithelial cells' glucose uptake and glutamate metabolism. These findings suggest that d-limonene's CB1R antagonistic property could effectively aid in the recovery of intestinal barrier damage, marking it a promising gastrointestinal protectant.

Leptospirosis is a significant zoonotic disease affecting livestock, leading to reproductive issues and economic losses. Despite its endemic status in India, research has predominantly focused on coastal regions, leaving the North Eastern Region (NER) underexplored. This study aims to investigate the seroprevalence and serogroup distribution of leptospirosis in livestock across Assam, a major state in the North Eastern Region (NER) of India. Serum samples (n=811) from cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and pigs were collected between 2016 and 2019 and screened using the Microscopic Agglutination Test (MAT) for 24 serogroups. The overall seroprevalence was 22.9 % (186/811), with highest prevalence in cattle (26.2 %) and buffalo (25 %), followed by small ruminants (19.8 %) and pigs (18.6 %) . Notably, uncommon serovars such as Mini (28.8 %), Manhao (12.4 %), and Cynopteri (7.5 %) were identified, indicating a unique epidemiological pattern in Assam. High seroprevalence was observed in districts like Bongaigaon (66.7 %), Kamrup Metropolitan (50.0 %), and Nalbari (40.0 %), emphasizing the need for targeted intervention strategies. The presence of these uncommon serogroups, typically found in neighbouring countries and other regions, suggests potential transboundary transmission from these countries. This study provides valuable insights into the seroprevalence and serogroup distribution of leptospirosis in Assam's livestock, highlighting the need for region-specific surveillance and control measures. These findings underscore the importance of understanding the local epidemiological landscape to develop effective disease management and prevention strategies, ultimately reducing the impact of leptospirosis in the NER of India.

Bertiella spp. is a mite-borne cestode parasite that inhabits the small intestine of wide range of mammals, including non-human primates. In the present study, the morphological and molecular analysis of Bertiella studeri recovered from the small intestine of a bonnet macaque (Macaca radiata) from Wayanad, Kerala (South India) was performed. Acetic alum carmine staining identified the cestode morphologically based on the characters like broader proglottids, which contain irregularly alternating genital pores, single set of reproductive organs, 280 testes and a tubular transverse uterus. Molecular characterization was done using 18SrRNA, ITS1-5.8S and COX1 genes. Phylogenetic trees were constructed using MEGA X based on the Maximum Likelihood (ML) method (Hasegawa-Kishino-Yano (HKY) model). Cytochrome oxidase I gene could detect the existence of genetic variation in the parasite from two different hosts viz., monkey (Kerala, Argentina, and Kenya) and human (Sri Lanka). A minimum spanning network of haplotypes was generated by the haplotype networking with the above sequences using the popARTv1.7. Haplotype analysis based on COX1 revealed that the parasite haplotype was different in each country with highest population frequency in Sri Lanka.

A hydrophobic deep eutectic solvent (HDES)-based optode was designed for the preconcentration and determination of the UO22+ ion in aqueous media using spectroscopic techniques [energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence (EDXRF) and solid-state absorption]. The optode was developed by incorporation of HDES (tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide and decanoic acid in an equimolar ratio), tri-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate, and 2-(5-bromo-2-pyridylazo)-5-diethylaminophenol into a cellulose triacetate matrix. Characterization studies were carried out using different techniques to understand the roles of HDES as a plasticizer, UO22+ extractant, and Br-PADAP immobilizer. Uptake studies revealed that the optimal pH was 3 and sorption followed the type II adsorption isotherm. Uranium in the U-sorbed optode can be directly analyzed over a large concentration range of 0.021 × 10-3-2.1 × 10-3 Mol L-1 using EDXRF. The optode film exhibited a linear dynamic range of 0.84 × 10-6-84 × 10-6 Mol L-1 for uranium, with a lowest limit of detection of 0.084 × 10-6 Mol L-1 by colorimetric analysis. This optode-based method was employed for seawater analysis for its UO22+ concentration without any matrix separation, and the concentration was found to be 1.30 ± 0.06 × 10-8 Mol L-1. The optode exhibited better selectivity for UO22+ in the presence of various cations including Sr2+ and Cs+ in an aqueous medium. Compared to other prevailing optical sensors, this optode performed better in terms of key factors like pH, equilibration time, reusability, and detection limit.

The Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) analysis of the activity concentration of radon and selected meteorological parameters was carried out at Department of Physics, Bangalore University, Bengaluru (12056'44"N, 77030'25″E, 840 m above MSL). All of the measured parameters, with the exception of pressure, showed a clear diurnal trend, which can be explained by the presence of typical atmospheric processes such as temperature inversion in the morning and greater vertical mixing in the afternoon. Radon's time series has a latent memory of sub-diurnal cycles, as shown via FFT analysis. The monthly average radon has higher levels of activity during winter months compared with monsoon and summer months. Days during the monsoon season had the lowest radon activity, which may be ascribed to the fact that less radon was being exhaled from the soil as a result of the rain. Radon was recorded at 8.06 ± 0.56 Bq/m3, temperature at 28.9 °C, humidity at 55.2% and pressure at 918 mbar.

Bacterial Leaf Blight (Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae) and blast (Magnaporthe oryzae) are the major biotic stresses around the rice-growing zones of the world. The development of resistant varieties through Marker Assisted Backcross Breeding is the utmost economical and eco-friendly method for achieving stable yield. Amongst the resistance genes recognized, Xa21 and Pi54 possess broad-spectrum resistance to many Xoo and blast strains around the world. In the present study, we have effectively introgressed a Bacterial Blight resistance gene (Xa21) and a blast resistance gene (Pi54) into susceptible variety ADT43 from RP-Bio-Patho-2 coupled with phenotypic selection for agronomic, cooking quality and grain traits through MABC. MABC was sustained till BC2F2 generation with specific markers pTA248 for Xa21 and Pi54MAS for Pi54 resistance genes. A set of SSR markers for parental polymorphism were utilized for maximum regaining of recurrent parent genome in each backcrossing. "Positive plants" from BC2F1 were selfed to generate BC2F2 and the homozygous lines for bacterial leaf blight and blast resistance genes were identified for further assessment.

Intracranial chondrosarcomas are rare malignant lesions. Both skull base and dural-based extraosseous chondrosarcomas have been reported to occur intracranially. Dural-based chondrosarcomas arising from the falx cerebri are rare lesions with only 19 cases reported till date. Although conventional, mesenchymal, and myxoid variants of chondrosarcomas have been reported intracranially, myxoid variant are the rarest with only 17 cases reported till date, among which only 2 were falcine. We are reporting the third case of falcine myxoid chondrosarcoma in a 32-year-old man who presented with seizures and subtle lower limb weakness. Radiological findings were suggestive of an atypical meningioma in the falcine region. Macroscopically total resection of the tumor was done. Histopathological examination confirmed myxoid chondrosarcoma, grade 1. Postoperative period was uneventful, and the patient remains asymptomatic 34 months after the surgery without the application of any adjuvant therapy. Falcine myxoid chondrosarcomas are extremely rare lesions with variable aggressiveness as suggested by the three cases reported till now including the present case.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has shown that low serum levels of magnesium are often linked to both microvascular and macrovascular complications in individuals with diabetes mellitus. Hence, monitoring of serum magnesium levels is needed in diabetic patients. Furthermore, the addition of magnesium through supplementation may present a novel therapeutic strategy for mitigating vascular complications in individuals with diabetes. OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of hypomagnesemia in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients and to assess the association between hypomagnesemia and microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus in a tertiary care hospital in North Kerala. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital involving 230 diabetic patients receiving outpatient and inpatient care in the Department of Internal Medicine at Government Medical College, Kozhikode, Kerala. The study took place from January 2018 to December 2018, during which serum magnesium levels were assessed and analyzed in relation to the patients' microvascular complications and glycemic control. RESULTS: We observed that 19.13% of the participants had hypomagnesemia. This condition was found to be more common among older individuals with diabetes, as indicated by a p-value of 0.022. However, there were no significant differences in serum magnesium levels based on gender (p-value 0.18), body mass index (BMI) (p-value 0.223), or the duration of diabetes (p-value 0.36). The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy, diabetic neuropathy, and diabetic nephropathy was higher in diabetics with hypomagnesemia than their counterparts with normal magnesium, with a p-value of 0.001, 0.001, and 0.001, respectively. There was a significant negative correlation obtained between serum magnesium and glycated hemoglobin (HbA1C) values (Pearson coefficient = -0.240 and p-value = <0.01) and fasting blood sugar (FBS) values (Pearson coefficient = -0.265 and p-value = <0.01). CONCLUSION: Hypomagnesemia is negatively correlated with HbA1C and FBS but not related to duration of diabetes and gender. The prevalence of microvascular complications was higher among the diabetics with hypomagnesemia.

Background Infections of the wounds, organs, or spaces that develop following surgery are known as surgical site infections (SSIs). The incidence of wound infections in obese patients undergoing lumbar spine surgery with the use of absorbable sutures versus staples for skin closure has not been studied previously. Materials and methods We conducted a retrospective observational study in our hospital where cases of lumbar spine surgery meeting the inclusion criteria were chosen retrospectively from March 2021 to March 2023. A total of 40 patients aged >18 years and <75 years who underwent lumbar spine surgery were covered by this investigation. Two cohorts with 20 patients in each were chosen from the population. Group A used a skin stapler to close wounds, whereas group B used absorbable sutures. The number of wound infections was the main result. Using SPSS version 23.0 (IBM SPSS Statistics, Armonk, NY), all data were analyzed after being entered into an Excel sheet (Microsoft Corp., Redmond, WA). Results A total of 40 participants were included in this study, and it revealed that there was no discernible variation in the groups' mean age or gender distribution. There is a significantly higher incidence of SSI in the absorbable suture group (35%) compared to the staple group (15%). The mean duration in days for the development of SSI in the absorbable suture group (9.86±2.12) was early compared to the staple group (12.67±2.08), which was statistically significant (p<0.05). Conclusion Compared to absorbable sutures, the current study showed a decreased incidence of surgical site infection in obese individuals receiving skin staples for wound closure.
