BACKGROUND AND AIM: The study aims to introduce a novel indicator, effective withdrawal time (WTS), which measures the time spent actively searching for suspicious lesions during colonoscopy and to compare WTS and the conventional withdrawal time (WT). METHODS: Colonoscopy video data from 472 patients across two hospitals were retrospectively analyzed. WTS was computed through a combination of artificial intelligence (AI) and manual verification. The results obtained through WTS were compared with those generated by the AI system. Patients were categorized into four groups based on the presence of polyps and whether resections or biopsies were performed. Bland Altman plots were utilized to compare AI-computed WTS with manually verified WTS. Scatterplots were used to illustrate WTS within the four groups, among different hospitals, and across various physicians. A parallel box plot was employed to depict the proportions of WTS relative to WT within each of the four groups. RESULTS: The study included 472 patients, with a median age of 55 years, and 57.8% were male. A significant correlation with manually verified WTS (r = 0.918) was observed in AI-computed WTS. Significant differences in WTS/WT among the four groups were revealed by the parallel box plot (P < 0.001). The group with no detected polyps had the highest WTS/WT, with a median of 0.69 (interquartile range: 0.40, 0.97). WTS patterns were found to be varied between the two hospitals and among senior and junior physicians. CONCLUSIONS: A promising alternative to traditional WT for quality control and training assessment in colonoscopy is offered by AI-assisted computation of WTS.

High-power electronic architectures and devices require elastic thermally conductive materials. The use of epoxy resin in thermal management is limited due to its rigidity. Here, based on epoxy vitrimer, flexible polyethylene glycol (PEG) chains are introduced into covalent adaptable networks to construct covalent-noncovalent interpenetrating networks, enabling the elasticity of epoxy resins. Compared to traditional silicone-based thermal interface materials, the newly developed elastic epoxy resin shows the advantages of reprocessability, self-healing, and no small molecule release. Results show that, even after being filled with boron nitride and liquid metal, the material maintains its resilience, reprocessability and self-healing properties. Leveraging these characteristics, the composite can be further processed into thin films through a repeated pressing-rolling technique that facilitates the forced orientation of the fillers. Subsequently, the bulk composites are reconstructed using a film-stacking method. The results indicate that the thermal conductivity of the reconstructed bulk composite reaches 3.66 W m-1 K-1, achieving a 68% increase compared to the composite prepared through blending. Due to the existence of covalent adaptable networks, the inorganic and inorganic components of the composite prepared in this work can be completely separated under mild conditions, realizing closed-loop recycling.

Hyperalgesia is typified by reduced pain thresholds and heightened responses to painful stimuli, with a notable prevalence in menopausal women, but the underlying mechanisms are far from understood. ß-Aminoisobutyric acid (BAIBA), a product of valine and thymine catabolism, has been reported to be a novel ligand of the Mas-related G protein coupled receptor D (MrgprD), which mediates pain and hyperalgesia. Here, we established a hyperalgesia model in 8-week-old female mice through ovariectomy (OVX). A significant increase in BAIBA plasma level was observed and was associated with decline of mechanical withdrawal threshold, thermal and cold withdrawal latency in mice after 6 weeks of OVX surgery. Increased expression of MrgprD in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) was shown in OVX mice compared to Sham mice. Interestingly, chronic loading with BAIBA not only exacerbated hyperalgesia in OVX mice, but also induced hyperalgesia in gonadally intact female mice. BAIBA supplementation also upregulated the MrgprD expression in DRG of both OVX and intact female mice, and enhanced the excitability of DRG neurons in vitro. Knockout of MrgprD markedly suppressed the effects of BAIBA on hyperalgesia and excitability of DRG neurons. Collectively, our data suggest the involvement of BAIBA in the development of hyperalgesia via MrgprD-dependent pathway, and illuminate the mechanisms underlying hyperalgesia in menopausal women.

Objectives: We investigated the impact of high-risk factors in stage II (TNM stage) rectal cancer patients to determine whether they benefit from adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery. Additionally, we explored the interaction between high-risk factors and adjuvant chemotherapy. Our study provides refined guidance for postoperative treatment in patients with stage II rectal cancer. Methods: The retrospective study included 570 stage II rectal adenocarcinoma patients who underwent total mesorectal excision surgery at Tianjin Union Medical Center from August 2012 to July 2019. We employed Cox regression models to assess the collected pathological and clinical factors, identifying the risk factors for overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Additionally, we thoroughly examined the interaction between various high-risk pathological factors and postoperative chemotherapy (ACT), including multiplicative interaction (INTM) and additive interaction (RERI). Results: Among the 570 stage II rectal cancer patients in this study, the average age was 62 years, with 58.9% (N=336) of the population being older than 60. Males accounted for the majority at 64.9% (N=370). Age was found to have an impact on whether patients received adjuvant chemotherapy after surgery (P<=0.001).Furthermore, age (HR: 1.916, 95% CI: 1.158-3.173, P=0.011; HR: 1.881, 95% CI: 1.111-3.186, P=0.019), TNM stage (HR: 2.216, 95% CI: 1.003-4.897, P=0.029; HR: 2.276, 95% CI: 1.026-5.048, P=0.043), the number of lymph nodes cleared during surgery (HR: 1.968, 95% CI: 1.112-3.483, P=0.017; HR: 1.864, 95% CI: 0.995-3.493, P=0.045), and lymphovascular invasion (HR: 2.864, 95% CI: 1.567-5.232, P=0.001; HR: 3.161, 95% CI: 1.723-5.799, P<0.001) were identified as independent risk factors for patients' overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS). Moreover, the interaction analysis, both multiplicative and additive, revealed significant interactions between the number of lymph nodes cleared during surgery and the administration of adjuvant chemotherapy. For OS (HR for multiplicative interaction: 0.477, p=0.045; RERI: -0.531, 95% CI: -1.061, -0.002) and for DFS (HR for multiplicative interaction: 0.338, p=0.039; RERI: -1.097, 95% CI: -2.190, -0.005). Conclusions: This study provides insights into the complex relationship between adjuvant chemotherapy (ACT) and survival outcomes in stage II rectal cancer patients with high-risk pathological factors. The findings suggest that the number of cleared lymph nodes plays a significant role in the efficacy of ACT and underscores the need for individualized treatment decisions in this patient population.

Excessive angiogenesis in subchondral bone is a pathological feature of osteoarthritis (OA). Tanshinone IIA (TIIA), an active compound found in Salvia miltiorrhiza, demonstrates significant anti-angiogenic properties. However, the effect of TIIA on abnormal subchondral angiogenesis in OA is still unclear. This study aims to investigate the mechanism of TIIA in modulating subchondral bone angiogenesis during OA and assess its therapeutic potential in OA. Our findings demonstrate that TIIA attenuated articular cartilage degeneration, normalized subchondral bone remodeling, and effectively suppressed aberrant angiogenesis within subchondral bone in monosodium iodoacetate (MIA)-induced OA mice. Additionally, the angiogenesis capacity of primary CD31hiEmcnhi endothelial cells was observed to be significantly reduced after treatment with TIIA in vitro. Mechanically, TIIA diminished the proportion of hypertrophic chondrocytes, ultimately leading to a substantial reduction in the secretion of vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA). The supernatant of hypertrophic chondrocytes promoted the tube formation of CD31hiEMCNhi endothelial cells, whereas TIIA inhibited this process. Furthermore, TIIA effectively suppressed the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor receptor 2 (VEGFR2) along with its downstream MAPK pathway in CD31hiEmcnhi endothelial cells. In conclusion, our data indicated that TIIA could effectively inhibit the abnormal angiogenesis in subchondral bone during the progression of OA by suppressing the VEGFA/VEFGR2/MAPK pathway. These findings significantly contribute to our understanding of the abnormal angiogenesis in OA and offer a promising therapeutic target for OA treatment.

BACKGROUND: Increased oxidative stress contributes to enhanced osteoclastogenesis and age-related bone loss. Melatonin (MT) is an endogenous antioxidant and declines with aging. However, it was unclear whether the decline of MT was involved in the enhanced osteoclastogenesis during the aging process. METHODS: The plasma level of MT, oxidative stress status, bone mass, the number of bone marrow-derived monocytes (BMMs) and its osteoclastogenesis were analyzed in young (3-month old) and old (18-month old) mice (n = 6 per group). In vitro, BMMs isolated from aged mice were treated with or without MT, followed by detecting the change of osteoclastogenesis and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level. Furthermore, old mice were treated with MT for 2 months to investigate the therapeutic effect. RESULTS: The plasma level of MT was markedly lower in aged mice compared with young mice. Age-related decline in MT was accompanied by enhanced oxidative stress, osteoclastogenic potential and bone loss. MT intervention significantly suppressed the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis, decreased intracellular ROS and enhanced antioxidant capacity of BMMs from aged mice. MT supplementation significantly attenuated oxidative stress, osteoclastogenesis, bone loss and deterioration of bone microstructure in aged mice. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that age-related decline of MT enhanced osteoclastogenesis via disruption of redox homeostasis. MT may serve as a key regulator in osteoclastogenesis and bone homeostasis, thereby highlighting its potential as a preventive agent for age-related bone loss.

RESUMEN

Here, we present a protocol for generating gene-specific split-GAL4 drivers from coding intronic Minos-mediated integration cassette/CRISPR-mediated integration cassette (MiMIC/CRIMIC) lines in Drosophila. We describe steps for four rounds of in vivo genetic crosses, PCR genotyping, and fluorescence imaging to ensure correct orientation of split-GAL4 integration before establishing stable fly stocks. This protocol offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional microinjection techniques for converting coding intronic MiMIC/CRIMIC lines into gene-specific split-GAL4 lines that are adaptable for fly researchers working on different tissues. PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening has been implemented in Tianjin, China since 2012. The objective was to estimate the neoplasia detection rate in a high-risk population by age and sex and to investigate the potential factors associated with colorectal neoplasia. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This study is based on data of the Tianjin CRC screening program from 2012 to 2020. Residents with a positive high-risk factors questionnaire (HRFQ) or a positive faecal immunochemical test (FIT) were identified as high-risk participants and were subsequently recommended for a free colonoscopy. RESULTS: A total of 4,117,897 eligible participants aged 40-74 years completed both a HRFQ and FIT, and 217,164 (5.3%) of them were identified as high-risk participants. Positive rates of preliminary screening increased with age and were higher in females than in males. For 57,971 participants undertaking colonoscopy, the detection rates of nonadvanced adenoma, advanced adenoma and CRC were 37.8%, 5.7% and 1.6%, respectively. Detection rates of advanced neoplasia increased from the age of 50 and were higher in males. For nonadvanced neoplasia, a strong increase was observed in males from the age of 40 and in females from the age of 50. Male sex had a greater impact on individuals aged 40-49 than on older individuals. Several factors including current smoking, drinking, and higher body mass index (BMI) were significantly associated with the presence of neoplasia, whereas, these associations were mainly restricted to individuals aged above 50 but not those aged 40-49 years. CONCLUSIONS: These findings support that age-specific risk stratification and sex-specific initiating ages for CRC screening should be recommended to improve the accuracy and effectiveness of current screening strategy.

The growing demand for tailored detectors in capillary electrophoresis (CE), addressing tasks like field deployment or dual-detection analysis, emphasizes the necessity for compact detection cells. In this work, we propose cost-effective and user-friendly additive manufacturing (3D-printing) approaches to produce such miniaturized detection cells suitable for a range of CE applications. Firstly, capacitively-coupled contactless conductivity detection (C4D) cells of different sizes are fabricated by casting low-melting-point alloy into 3D-printed molds. Various designs of Faraday shields are integrated within the cells and compared. A mini-C4D cell (9.5×7.0×7.5 mm3) is produced, with limits of detection for alkaline cations ranging from 8-12 µM in a short-capillary based CE application. Secondly, ultraviolet photometric (UV-PD) detection cells are fabricated using 3D printing. These cells feature two narrow slits with a width of 60 µm, which are positioned along the path of incident and transmission light to facilitate collimation. A deep UV-LED (235 nm or 255 nm) is employed as the light source, and black resin is determined to be the optimal material for 3D printing the UV-PD cell, owing to its superior UV light absorption capabilities. The UV-PD cell is connected to the LED and photodetector through two optical fibers, making it easy to switch the light source and detector. The effective pathlength and stray light percentage for detecting on a 75 µm id capillary are 74 µm and 0.5 %, respectively. Thirdly, a dual-detection cell that combined C4D and UV-PD at a single detection point is proposed. The performance of direct detection by C4D and indirect detection by UV-PD is compared for detecting organic acids. The strategies for developing cost-effective compact detection cells facilitate the versatile integration of multiple detection methods in CE analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Existing studies indicate that advanced colorectal neoplasms exhibit distinct clinical and biological traits based on anatomical sites. However, in China, especially for advanced colorectal neoplasms, there's limited information available on these traits. Our primary objective is to comprehensively study the characteristics of advanced colorectal neoplasm patients in different anatomical sites in China. METHODS: We selected information from the colorectal cancer screening database in Tianjin, China, since 2010 as the study subject. We chose valid information from 3113 patients with comprehensive data and diagnosed advanced colorectal neoplasms (ANs) from a pool of 19,308 individuals to be included in the study. We then conducted further analysis to examine the correlation between these epidemiological data and tumor location. RESULTS: Among the 3113 patients, neoplasms in the left side of the colon accounted for the largest proportion, while neoplasms in the right side of the colon had the smallest proportion, followed by rectal neoplasms. The highest proportion of advanced colorectal neoplasms was found among men. In the age group of 39-49 years old, the proportion of left late-stage advanced colon neoplasms was equal to that of right late-stage advanced colon neoplasms, while late-stage advanced rectal neoplasms increased with age. Smoking, drinking, and a history of colon cancer in first-degree relatives showed statistically significant associations with the location distribution of advanced colorectal neoplasms. A history of appendicitis, appendectomy, cholecystitis, or cholecystectomy did not significantly affect the location distribution of advanced colorectal neoplasms. However, among patients with such histories, there was a statistically significant relationship between advanced colon neoplasms on the right and those on the left and in the rectum. Similar results were observed for BMI. CONCLUSION: Our research findings demonstrate that advanced colorectal neoplasms display unique epidemiological characteristics depending on their anatomical locations, and these distinctions deviate from those observed in Western populations. These insights contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of the topic and offer valuable guidance for future research in China. We advocate for further investigations centered on the anatomical location of colorectal neoplasms to enhance the precision of colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and treatment.

In this study, the heat-resistant hydrogen-bonded organic framework (HOF) material HOF-FJU-1 was synthesized via in situ generation and then used as flame retardants (FRs) to improve the flame retardancy of epoxy resin (EP). HOF-FJU-1 can maintain high crystallinity at 450 °C and thus function as a flame retardant in EP. The study found that HOF-FJU-1 facilitates the improvement of char formation in EP, thus inhibiting heat transfer and smoke release during combustion. For EP/HOF-FJU-1 composites, the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 can remarkably improve both the mechanical properties and the flame retardancy of EP. Furthermore, the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 has better fire safety than the ex situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 at the same filling content. Thermal degradation products and flame retardation mechanisms in the gas and condensed phases were further investigated. This work demonstrates that the in situ-generated HOF-FJU-1 is promising to be an excellent flame-retardant candidate.

Advanced oxidation processes based on radicals and/or non-radical catalysis are emerging as promising technologies for eliminating pharmaceuticals (PhACs) from wastewater. However, the respective contributions of different removal pathways (radicals or non-radical) for PhAC degradation still lacks quantitative investigation. Zero-valent iron and carbon nanotubes are frequently used to generate both radicals and non-radical species via the activation of persulfate (Fe0/SWCNT/PDS). Herein, the removal kinetics of 1 µM PhACs are depicted, and the corresponding synergistic mechanism of the Fe0/SWCNT/PDS process is discussed. Coupled removal pathways showed the higher degradation of PhACs than the individual pathways. Radicals quenching studies combined with electron spin resonance characterisation suggested that the radical-based removal pathway tends to attack electron-deficient organics, whereas its counterpart is more likely to work on electron-rich organics. From the perspectives of the contribution rate, the redox cycles of conjugated Fe species play a more important role in the generation of radicals than free Fe species, and the faster electron transfer in the conductive bridge offered by SWCNT is responsible for the effective corrosion of Fe0 and the decomposition of PDS. Six real wastewater samples were used to prove the generality of the above removal contribution, regardless of the wastewater samples, and the results suggested that identical attack patterns were obtained in all real wastewater samples, although coexistence matrix slightly suppressed PhAC removal. This work provides a deeper insight into the high-performance working mechanism on synergistic interactions and contaminant removal in a combined catalysis system.

Artificial sweeteners discharged into aquatic environments have raised concern because of their ubiquitous occurrence and potential biological effect. And some of them, such as sucralose (SUC) and acesulfame (ACE), have been identified as emerging contaminants. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are considered as important sources and sinks of artificial sweeteners discharged into the environment. In this study, the occurrence and removal of four representative artificial sweeteners in 12 WWTPs located in different provinces of China were investigated. The results showed that artificial sweeteners were detected widely in the investigated WWTPs. The median concentrations of the four target artificial sweeteners were detected in influents at levels of 0.03-3.85 µg L-1 and decreased in the order of SUC > ACE > aspartame (APM) > neotame (NTM). Additionally, the per capita mass loads of total artificial sweeteners in the WWTPs could be affected by the location of the WWTPs and were higher in southern cities than in northern cities. It was also found that there was a distinct linear correlation between the per capita mass load of ACE in influents and population density. During the treatment of WWTPs, the overall removal efficiency of artificial sweeteners ranged from -116% to 99.1%. Among the target artificial sweeteners, SUC and ACE might have potential risk to aquatic environments based on the calculation of the risk quotient. Thus, advanced treatment processes were carried to further remove SUC and ACE to reduce their long-term cumulative effect. Overall, UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS showed a better effect than granular activated carbon (GAC) adsorption in the removal of artificial sweeteners. The reaction constants of ACE by UV/H2O2 and UV/PDS were higher than those of SUC, which is related to molar extinction coefficients. Meanwhile, the adsorption ability of GAC adsorption for SUC was better than that of ACE, which is in correlation with the octanol-water partition coefficient. By comparison of removal efficiency, UV/PDS was considered as the most suitable advanced treatment process to remove ACE and SUC.

INTRODUCTION: To define the prognosis of colorectal cancer (CRC) in young patients and to compare their postoperative treatment with that of older patients. METHODS: This multicenter study enrolled 5,457 patients with primary CRC who underwent surgical resection. The overall survival (OS), clinicopathologic characteristics, and postoperative treatment of 253 young patients aged 18-44 years and 5,204 older patients aged 44-80 years were analyzed. RESULTS: The OS rate was 77.1% for young and 74.2% for older patients (P = 0.348). Landmark analysis showed a significant difference in survival between young and older patients, with 63.8% of deaths among young patients being within 25 months of surgery compared with 42.4% among older patients (P = 0.002). Among those who survived more than 25 months, young patients had significantly better survival than older patients (P = 0.009). Multivariable analysis of young patients revealed that the tumor location, perineural invasion, and stage were associated with poor survival within 25 months; after this period, stage was the only prognostic marker. Young patients were more likely to receive chemotherapy, particularly multiagent regimens. For young patients, no significant difference in OS was found based on the chemotherapy regimen, regardless of disease stage (II, III, or IV, all P > 0.05). In addition, unlike in older patients, no difference in OS was found in young patients regardless of the drug regimen administered (all P > 0.05). DISCUSSION: Young-onset CRC may have a unique disease biology that warrants further research and therapy development.

BACKGROUND: Given the limited effectiveness of the current Chinese colorectal cancer (CRC) screening procedure, adherence to colonoscopy remains low. We aim to develop and validate a scoring system based on individuals who were identified as having a high risk in initial CRC screening to achieve more efficient risk stratification and improve adherence to colonoscopy. METHODS: A total of 29,504 screening participants with positive High-Risk Factor Questionnaire (HRFQ) or faecal immunochemical test (FIT) who underwent colonoscopy in Tianjin from 2012-2020 were enrolled in this study. Binary regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between risk factors and advanced colorectal neoplasia. Internal validation was also used to assess the performance of the scoring system. RESULTS: Male sex, older age (age ≥ 50 years), high body mass index (BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2), current or past smoking and weekly alcohol intake were identified as risk factors for advanced colorectal neoplasm. The odds ratios (ORs) for significant variables were applied to construct the risk score ranging from 0-11: LR, low risk (score 0-3); MR, moderate risk (score 4-6); and HR, high risk (score 7-11). Compared with subjects with LR, those with MR and HR had ORs of 2.47 (95% confidence interval, 2.09-2.93) and 4.59 (95% confidence interval, 3.86-5.44), respectively. The scoring model showed an outstanding discriminatory capacity with a c-statistic of 0.64 (95% confidence interval, 0.63-0.65). CONCLUSIONS: Our results showed that the established scoring system could identify very high-risk populations with colorectal neoplasia. Combining this risk score with current Chinese screening methods may improve the effectiveness of CRC screening and adherence to colonoscopy.

BACKGROUND:  Screening recommendations for colorectal cancer (CRC) are mainly based on family history rather than lifestyle risk factors. We aimed to assess and compare risk factors for colorectal neoplasm (CRN) and evaluate trends in neoplasm detection rates during the three rounds of screening from 2012 to 2020 in Tianjin, China. METHODS: This study was based on 89,535 first-recorded colonoscopies in Tianjin CRC screening program, 2012-2020. Of these, 45,380 individuals with complete family history and lifestyle factors were included for population attributable fraction (PAF) estimation. RESULTS:  The overall detection rate of nonadvanced adenomas, advanced adenomas and CRC was 39.3%, 5.9% and 1.5%, respectively. The PAFs of current smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity, higher BMI and family history of CRC, respectively, were 8.9%, 2.6%, 1.9%, 5.8%, and 1.1% for males with nonadvanced CRN; 12.3%, 7.3%, 4.9%, 7.2%, and 0.8% for males with advanced CRN; 3.4%, 0.4%, 2.1%, 7.8%, and 0.7% for females with nonadvanced CRN; and 4.3%, 0.2%, 8.2%, 8.5%, and -0.6% for females with advanced CRN. The PAFs of selected lifestyle factors were 19.9% for males with nonadvanced CRN, 29.0% for males with advanced CRN, 9.7% for females with nonadvanced CRN and 13.8% for females with advanced CRN. CONCLUSIONS:  Modifiable lifestyle factors, including smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and BMI, have a larger contribution to CRN than family history of CRC. Our findings will provide references for developing guidelines of CRC prevention and control in China.

The characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) can significantly affect the degradation of target compounds by the advanced oxidation processes. In this study, the effects of the different hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity fractions, molecular weight (MW) fractions, fluorescence components and molecular components of DOM extracted from municipal wastewater on the degradation of 4 pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), including carbamazepine, clofibric acid, atenolol and erythromycin by the UV/H2O2 process were investigated. The results showed that the degradation rate constants of 4 PhACs decreased dramatically in the presence of DOM. The linear regressions of 4 PhACs degradation as a function of specific fluorescence intensity (SFI) are exhibited during the degradation of 4 PhACs and the SFI may be used to evaluate effect of DOM on target compounds in wastewater. The hydrophobic acid (HPO-A) exhibited the strongest inhibitory effect on degradation of 4 PhACs during oxidation process. The small MW fractions of DOM significantly inhibited the degradation of 4 PhACs during oxidation process. Among three fluorescence components, hydrophobic humic-like substances may significantly inhibit the degradation of 4 PhACs during oxidation process. At the molecular level, the formulas may be derived from terrestrial sources. CHO compound may significantly inhibit the degradation of 4 PhACs during oxidation process on formula classes. The unsaturated hydrocarbons, carbohydrates and tannins compounds may significantly inhibit the effectiveness of the UV/H2O2 process on compound classes.

Elemental contents change with shifts in macromolecular composition of marine phytoplankton. Recent studies focus on the responses of elemental contents of coccolithophores, a major calcifying phytoplankton group, to changing carbonate chemistry, caused by the dissolution of anthropogenically derived CO2 into the surface ocean. However, the effects of changing carbonate chemistry on biomacromolecules, such as protein and carbohydrate of coccolithophores, are less documented. Here, we disentangled the effects of elevated dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC) concentration (900 to 4,930µmolkg-1) and reduced pH value (8.04 to 7.70) on physiological rates, elemental contents, and macromolecules of the coccolithophore Emiliania huxleyi. Compared to present DIC concentration and pH value, combinations of high DIC concentration and low pH value (ocean acidification) significantly increased pigments content, particulate organic carbon (POC), and carbohydrate content and had less impact on growth rate, maximal relative electron transport rate (rETR max), particulate organic nitrogen (PON), and protein content. In high pH treatments, elevated DIC concentration significantly increased growth rate, pigments content, rETR max, POC, particulate inorganic carbon (PIC), protein, and carbohydrate contents. In low pH treatments, the extents of the increase in growth rate, pigments and carbohydrate content were reduced. Compared to high pH value, under low DIC concentration, low pH value significantly increased POC and PON contents and showed less impact on protein and carbohydrate contents; however, under high DIC concentration, low pH value significantly reduced POC, PON, protein, and carbohydrate contents. These results showed that reduced pH counteracted the positive effects of elevated DIC concentration on growth rate, rETR max, POC, PON, carbohydrate, and protein contents. Elevated DIC concentration and reduced pH acted synergistically to increase the contribution of carbohydrate-carbon to POC, and antagonistically to affect the contribution of protein-nitrogen to PON, which further shifted the carbon/nitrogen ratio of E. huxleyi.

When using the Oliver-Pharr method, the indented specimen is assumed to be a perfectly flat surface, thus ignoring the influences of surface roughness that might be encountered in experiment. For nanoindentation measurements, a flat surface is fabricated from curved specimens by mechanical polishing. However, the position of the polished curved surface cannot be controlled. There are no reliable theoretical or experimental methods to evaluate the mechanical behavior during nanoindentation of an elastic-plastic microsphere. Therefore, it is necessary to conduct reliable numerical simulations to evaluate this behavior. This article reports a systematic computational study regarding the instrumented nanoindentation of elastic-plastic microspherical materials. The ratio between elastic modulus of the microsphere and the initial yield stress of the microsphere was systematically varied from 10 to 1000 to cover the mechanical properties of most materials encountered in engineering. The simulated results indicate that contact height is unsuitable to replace contact depth for obtaining the indentation elastic modulus of microspherical materials. The extracted elastic modulus of a microsphere using the Oliver-Pharr method with the simulated unloading curve depends on the indentation depth. It demonstrates that nanoindentation on microspherical materials exhibits a "size effect".

Resveratrol/tannic acid-poly(vinyl alcohol) (RETA-PVA) blends have been prepared by compression molding using poly(vinyl alcohol), tannic acid and resveratrol as raw materials. The effects of different resveratrol/tannic acid ratios on the flammability of RETA-PVA blends have been studied. The flammability of the RETA-PVA blends was assessed using cone calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Results indicate that RETA-PVA molecules occur through hydrogen bonding and RETA-PVA blends are amorphous. The glass transition temperature for RETA-PVA-2 is the highest among all blends and the peak of heat release rate and smoke production rate for RETA-PVA is 38.4% and 43.9% lower than that for PVA, respectively. With the addition of resveratrol, the residual amount of RETA-PVA after complete combustion is greatly increased, to 30 times that for PVA, indicating that RETA-PVA blends display excellent flame retardant properties.
