RESUMEN

Marine organisms commonly encounter co-stress resulting from the coexistence of microplastics (MPs) and heavy metals pollution in marine environments. Nevertheless, the combined effects and toxicity mechanisms of MPs and heavy metals on marine organisms remain unclear. This study integrated growth, physiological, morphological, and biochemical markers to assess the individual and combined toxicity of polyvinyl chloride MPs (PVC MPs, 1 × 104 particles/L) and copper (Cu, 200 µg/L) on marine jacopever (Sebastes schlegelii). The results revealed that co-exposure to MPs and Cu had a more detrimental impact on jacopever compared to the single-exposure groups, as evidenced by the enhanced growth inhibition, respiratory stress, and hepatotoxicity. This phenomenon may be attributed to PVC MPs accelerating the accumulation of Cu in jacopever liver. Therefore, peroxidation damage occurred in the co-exposed liver and may result in liver dysfunction. These findings contribute valuable insights into the risks associated with the coexistence of MPs and heavy metal pollution in marine ecosystems.

BACKGROUND: Energy intake and nutritional status influences a patient's recovery from major abdominal surgery. The aim of this study is to explore and validate the clinical feasibility of an inflection-point nutrition strategy for personalized nutrition in gastric cancer patients after surgery. METHODS: We conducted a prospective cohort study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with gastric cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. We collected the demographic and clinic pathological characteristics of included patients. Patients were divided into a formular nutrition (FN) and inflection-point nutrition (IPN) group. We monitored the perioperative dynamics of the oral mucosal epithelia cell apoptosis rate. Predictive factors for inflection phenomenon were investigated in univariate and multivariate analysis. RESULTS: A total of 53 gastric cancer patients were included. A total of 30 (56.6%) patients showed the inflection phenomenon, with 9 (34.6%) patients in the FN group and 21 (77.8%) patients in the IPN group, respectively. We found that patients with the inflection phenomenon had a shorter duration of hospital stay compared to patients without the inflection phenomenon (p = 0.04). In multivariate analysis, independent predictive factors for inflection phenomenon were age (p = 0.015), operation time ≤ 300 min (p = 0.012), and average energy intake ≥ 25 Kcal/kg/day (p = 0.038). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings for the first time revealed that the oral epithelial cell apoptosis rate can promptly reflect the patients' perioperative nutrition needs. Meanwhile, we developing a novel and feasible nutrition therapy guided by the oral epithelial cell apoptosis rate is novel in gastric cancer patients that have undergone laparoscopic gastrectomy.

Background: Although enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) has been proven to be beneficial after laparoscopic colorectal surgery, some of the patients may fail to complete the ERAS program during hospitalization. This prospective study aims to evaluate the risk factors associated with ERAS failure after laparoscopic colorectal cancer surgery. Methods: This is a prospective study from a single tertiary referral hospital. Patients diagnosed with colorectal cancer who met the inclusion criteria were included in this study. Demographic and clinicopathological characteristics were collected. Post-operative activity time and 6-min walking distance (6MWD) were measured. Patients were divided into ERAS failure group and ERAS success according to decreased post-operative activity and 6MWD. Factors associated with ERAS failure were investigated by univariate and multivariate analysis. Results: A total of 91 patients with colorectal cancer were included. The incidence of ERAS failure is 28.6% among all patients. Patients in ERAS failure group experienced higher rate of post-operative ileus and prolonged hospital stay (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis revealed that older age (p = 0.006), body mass index ≥25.5 kg/m2 (p = 0.037), smoking (p = 0.002), operative time (p = 0.048), and post-operative energy intake <18.5 kcal/kg•d (p = 0.045) were independent risk factors of ERAS failure after laparoscopic colorectal surgery. Conclusions: Our findings indicated that a proportion of patients may fail the ERAS program after laparoscopic colorectal surgery. We for the first time showed that post-operative energy intake was an independent risk factor for ERAS failure. This may provide evidence for further investigation on precise measurement of nutritional status and selected high-risk patients for enhanced nutrition support.

BACKGROUND: It is well known that earthquake severely threatens life-safety and physical damage. However, the empirical literature on the effects of nature disasters such as earthquake on the reproductive outcomes is limited. METHODS: On May 12th, 2008, a massive 8.0 magnitude earthquake occurred in Wenchuan, a city 92 km away from our animal facility [National Chengdu Center for Safety Evaluation of Drugs (NCCSED)]. To investigate whether this tremendous earthquake exerted adverse effects on the reproductive and developmental functions in Sprague-Dawley rats, we collected some relevant data from reproductive toxicity studies around the earthquake, and compared them with the background data, which were gathered before and after the earthquake. Copulation ratio, gestation ratio, and fertility of female rats, as well as uterine and fetal morphology, were examined. RESULTS: Our data demonstrated that the Wenchuan earthquake significantly decreased the copulation and gestation ratio, although it did not exhibit obvious side effects on some other reproductive and developmental parameters.
