Background: The change in the soil carbon bank is closely related to the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the vegetation litter input can change the soil organic carbon content. However, due to various factors, such as soil type, climate, and plant species, the effects of vegetation restoration on the soil vary. Currently, research on aggregate-associated carbon has focused on single vegetation and soil surface layers, and the changes in soil aggregate stability and carbon sequestration under different vegetation restoration modes and in deeper soil layers remain unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to explore the differences and relationships between stability and the carbon preservation capacity (CPC) under different vegetation restoration modes and to clarify the main influencing factors of aggregate carbon preservation. Methods: Grassland (GL), shrubland (SL), woodland (WL), and garden plots (GP) were sampled, and they were compared with farmland (FL) as the control. Soil samples of 0-40 cm were collected. The soil aggregate distribution, aggregate-associated organic carbon concentration, CPC, and stability indicators, including the mean weight diameter (MWD), fractal dimension (D), soil erodibility (K), and geometric mean diameter (GMD), were measured. Results: The results showed that at 0-40 cm, vegetation restoration significantly increased the >2 mm aggregate proportions, aggregate stability, soil organic carbon (SOC) content, CPC, and soil erosion resistance. The >2 mm fractions of the GL and SL were at a significantly greater proportion at 0-40 cm than that of the other vegetation types but the CPC was only significantly different between 0 and 10 cm when compared with the other vegetation types (P < 0.05). The >2 mm aggregates showed a significant positive correlation with the CPC, MWD, and GMD (P < 0.01), and there was a significant negative correlation with the D and K (P < 0.05). The SOC and CPC of all the vegetation types were mainly distributed in the 0.25-2 mm and <0.25 mm aggregate fractions. The MWD, GMD, SOC, and CPC all gradually decreased with increasing soil depth. Overall, the effects of vegetation recovery on soil carbon sequestration and soil stability were related to vegetation type, aggregate particle size, and soil depth, and the GL and SL restoration patterns may be more suitable in this study area. Therefore, to improve the soil quality and the sequestration of organic carbon and reduce soil erosion, the protection of vegetation should be strengthened and the policy of returning farmland to forest should be prioritized.

Vegetation restoration affects the carbon cycle of terrestrial ecosystems by changing the rate of carbon input and conversion. In order to explore the evolution characteristics of soil active organic carbon components and carbon pool management index during vegetation restoration in karst areas, the soil of a grassland sequence(5, 10, 15, and 20 a), shrub sequence(5, 10, 15, and 20 a), and garden sequence(5, 10, and 15 a) in a karst area was taken as the research object, and the adjacent farmland was taken as the control(CK). The effects of different vegetation restoration years on the evolution of soil organic carbon(SOC), readily oxidizable organic carbon(ROC333, ROC167, and ROC33 were all soil active organic carbon that could be oxidized by 333, 167, and 33 mmol·L-1 KMnO4), microbial biomass carbon(MBC), dissolved organic carbon(DOC), and carbon pool management index(CPMI) were analyzed. The results showed that compared with that of CK, the average grassland, shrub, and garden SOC contents in the 0-40 cm soil layer increased by 70.77%, 114.40%, and 50.17%, respectively. In the 0-20 cm soil layer, with the increase in restoration years, the SOC content of the grassland sequence and garden sequence increased first and then decreased, and that of the shrub sequence increased first, then decreased, and then increased again. ROC333, ROC167, and ROC33 were consistent with the SOC change trend of the corresponding sequence. In the 20-40 cm soil layer, the change trend of ROC333, ROC167, and ROC33 of each sequence was inconsistent with the SOC of the corresponding sequence. In the 0-40 cm soil layer, the MBC content of the grassland sequence decreased first, then increased, and then decreased, and the maximum value of MBC in each soil layer was in G15. The shrub sequence in the 0-10 cm soil layer increased first, then decreased, and then increased, and in the 10-40 cm soil layer it increased first and then decreased. The garden sequence increased first and then decreased in the 0-30 cm soil layer and gradually increased in the 30-40 cm soil layer. Kos of the three sequences decreased first, then increased, and then decreased, whereas L and LI showed the opposite of Kos. CPI increased first and then decreased; the CPMI of the grassland and garden sequences increased first and then decreased, whereas the CPMI of the shrub sequence increased first, then decreased, and then increased again. The contents of SOC, ROC333, ROC167, ROC33, and MBC and the annual growth of Kos were shrub>grassland>orchard, and the annual growth of DOC and CPMI were orchard>grassland>shrub. The contents of SOC and its components in the three sequences decreased with the increase in soil layer and had obvious surface aggregation. Redundancy analysis showed that alkali-hydrolyzable nitrogen(AN) was the main environmental factor affecting soil active organic carbon components and soil organic carbon pool under the vegetation restoration in the karst area. In summary, soil active organic carbon components and CPMI evolved with vegetation restoration years. Different vegetation restorations could increase the content of SOC and its components in karst areas to a certain extent, and shrub restoration promotes the accumulation of SOC.

OBJECTIVE: Single nucleotide polymorphisms in microRNAs are believed to affect the occurrence and progression of cancer by altering the expression and biological functions of microRNAs. Several studies investigated the role of the miR-149 rs2292832 C>T polymorphism on the risk of gastric cancer (GC), but got conflicting results. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive and systematic search through the PubMed MEDLINE, Google Scholar, Science Direct, Scopus, CNKI, and Web of science, 8 studies were included in the meta-analysis to determine whether miR-149 rs2292832 C>T polymorphism contributed to the risk of GC. RESULTS: Pooled data indicated that miR-149 rs2292832 C>T polymorphism was not associated with GC risk. In the stratified analysis by ethnicity, miR-149 rs2292832 C>T polymorphism significantly increased GC risk under the allele comparison model (odds ratio [OR] = 1.27, 95% CI = 1.04-1.55, Pheterogeneity = 0.18, P = .02), recessive model (OR = 1.44, 95% CI = 1.04-2.01, Pheterogeneity = 0.19, P = .03) among Caucasians; but decreased GC risk under the allele comparison model (OR = 0.89, 95% CI = 0.81-0.98, Pheterogeneity = 0.22, P = .02) and dominant model (OR = 0.82, 95% CI = 0.72-0.93, Pheterogeneity = 0.15, P = .01) among Asian. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests a positive correlation between miR-149 rs2292832 C>T polymorphism and GC development among Caucasians, but negative correlation among Asian population.

Objective@#To explore the social functioning characteristics of children with co ocurrence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) for intervention reference.@*Methods@#The Chinese Version of Swanson Nolan and Pelham, Version IV Scale-Parent Form(SNAP-IV), the Chinese Version of Weiss Functional Impairment Scale-Parent(WFIRS-P), and the Questionnaire-Children with Difficulties (QCD) were applied to 192 children with ADHD, 243 children with co occurrence of ADHD and ODD, who firstly visited the Department of Children Psychological Health of Zhuhai Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, and 118 healthy control children from a school in Zhuhai.@*Results@#The scores of attention deficit factor in SNAP-Ⅳ scale of children in three groups were[1.9(1.7, 2.1), 1.8(1.6, 1.9), 1.0(0.6, 1.2)], the scores of hyperactive impulsivity were[1.8(1.4, 2.1), 1.6(1.1, 1.8), 0.7(0.2, 1.0)] the scores of oppositional defiant were[1.6(1.5, 1.9), 1.0(0.8,1.1), 0.8(0.5, 1.0)], the differences were statistically significant( H=268.44, 237.97, 418.66, P <0.01). The dimensions and total scores of the three groups of children s WFIRS-P scale were family[0.8(0.6, 1.1), 0.6(0.3, 0.8), 0.3(0.1, 0.6)]; learning and school[0.8(0.5, 1.1), 0.8(0.5, 1.0), 0.3(0.1, 0.5)]; life skills[1.0(0.7, 1.2), 0.8(0.6, 1.0), 0.6(0.4, 0.8)]; self management [1.0(0.3, 1.0), 0.7(0.3, 1.0), 0.3(0.0, 0.7)]; social activities [0.7(0.4, 1.0), 0.6(0.3, 0.9), 0.3(0.0, 0.4 )]; adventure activities[0.3(0.2, 0.5), 0.2(0.1, 0.4), 0.1(0.0, 0.2)]; the total score[0.8(0.6, 1.0), 0.6(0.5, 0.8), 0.4( 0.2 , 0.6)], the difference between the groups was statistically significant( H=108.82, 122.45, 60.17, 40.58, 96.17, 76.57, 138.30, P <0.01). The difference between the QCD scale scores of children in the three groups was statistically significant[30.0( 24.0 , 37.0), 32.0(27.0, 40.0), 47.0(37.0, 52.3), H=124.65, P <0.01). Multiple regression analysis showed that attention deficit, and oppositional defiant symptoms were associated with both the total WFIRS-P score and the QCD score of children( R 2= 0.40 , 0.25, P <0.05).@*Conclusion@#Children with co occurrence of ADHD and ODD have more severe deficits in all dimensions of social functioning than children with ADHD, which might be associated with attention deficit and oppositional defiant symptoms.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most common form of dementia and is ranked as the 6th leading cause of death in the US. The prevalence of AD and dementia is steadily increasing and expected cases in USA is 14.8 million by 2050. Neuroinflammation and gradual neurodegeneration occurs in Alzheimer's disease. However, existing medications has limitation to completely abolish, delay, or prevent disease progression. Phosphodiesterases (PDEs) are large family of enzymes to hydrolyze the 3'-phosphodiester links in cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) and cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) in signal-transduction pathways for generation of 5'-cyclic nucleotides. It plays vital role to orchestrate several pharmacological activities for proper cell functioning and regulating the levels of cAMP and cGMP. Several evidence has suggested that abnormal cAMP signaling is linked to cognitive problems in neurodegenerative disorders like AD. Therefore, the PDE family has become a widely accepted and multipotential therapeutic target for neurodegenerative diseases. Notably, modulation of cAMP/cGMP by phytonutrients has a huge potential for the management of AD. Natural compounds have been known to inhibit phosphodiesterase by targeting key enzymes of cGMP synthesis pathway, however, the mechanism of action and their therapeutic efficacy has not been explored extensively. Currently, few PDE inhibitors such as Vinpocetine and Nicergoline have been used for treatment of central nervous system (CNS) disorders. Considering the role of flavonoids to inhibit PDE, this review discussed the therapeutic potential of natural compounds with PDE inhibitory activity for the treatment of AD and related dementia.

OBJECTIVE: The methionine synthase reductase (MTRR) gene encodes the MTRR enzyme involved in the metabolic pathway of homocysteine. Several studies investigated the effect of the MTRR rs1532268 gene polymorphism on the risk of gastric cancer (GC), but the results have been inconsistent. METHODS: We performed a comprehensive and systematic search of PubMed, Google Scholar, MEDLINE, Science Direct, Scopus, CNKI, and Web of Science. Five studies were included in this meta-analysis to determine whether MTRR rs1532268 polymorphism contributes to the risk of GC. RESULTS: Pooled data indicated that the MTRR rs1532268 polymorphism significantly increased GC risk under the allele comparison model (odds ratio [OR] = 1.14, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.01-1.29) and dominant model (OR = 1.14, 95% CI = 1.00-1.30). In the analysis stratified by ethnicity, no relationship was found in Whites or Asians. CONCLUSION: Our meta-analysis suggests a positive correlation between MTRR rs1532268 polymorphism and GC development.

Aims: We investigated whether faecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) decreases intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) and improves gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction and infectious complications in acute pancreatitis (AP). Methods: In this first randomised, single-blind, parallel-group, controlled study, we recruited and enrolled consecutive patients with AP complicated with GI dysfunction. Eligible participants were randomly assigned to receive faecal transplant (n = 30) or normal saline (n = 30) via a nasoduodenal tube once and then again 2 days later. The primary endpoint was the rate of IAP decline; secondary endpoints were GI function, infectious complications, organ failure, hospital stay and mortality. Analyses were based on intention to treat. Results: We enrolled 60 participants and randomly assigned them to the FMT (n = 30) or control (n = 30) group. Baseline characteristics and disease severity were similar for both groups. IAP decreased significantly 1 week after intervention in both groups, with no difference in the IAP decline rate between FMT and Control group [0.1 (-0.6, 0.5) vs. 0.2 (-0.2, 0.6); P = 0.27]. Normal gastrointestinal failure (GIF) scores were achieved in 12 (40%) patients in the FMT group and 14 (47%) in the control group, with no significant difference (P = 0.60). However, D-lactate was significantly elevated in the FMT group compared to the control group, as calculated by the rate of decline [-0.3 (-3.7, 0.8) vs. 0.4 (-1.1, 0.9); P = 0.01]. Infectious complications occurred in 15 (50%) and 16 (53.33%) patients in the FMT and control groups, respectively (P = 0.80). However, interleukin-6 (IL-6) was significantly elevated in the FMT group compared to the control group, as calculated by the rate of decline [0.4 (-3.6, 0.9) vs. 0.8 (-1.7, 1.0); P = 0.03]. One participant experienced transient nausea immediately after FMT, but no serious adverse events were attributed to FMT. Conclusion: FMT had no obvious effect on IAP and infectious complications in AP patients, though GI barrier indictors might be adversely affected. Further multi-centre studies are needed to confirm our findings. The study was registered at https://clinicaltrials.gov (NCT02318134).

BACKGROUND: The gut is implicated in the pathogenesis of acute pancreatitis (AP) and the infectious complications of AP are commonly associated with enteric bacteria, yet whether gut microbiota dysbiosis participants in AP severity remains largely unknown. METHODS: We collected clinical information and fecal samples from 165 adult participants, including 41 with mild AP (MAP), 59 with moderately severe AP (MSAP), 30 with severe AP (SAP) and 35 healthy controls (HC). The serum inflammatory cytokines and gut barrier indexes were detected. Male C57BL/6 mice with AP were established and injuries of pancreas were evaluated in antibiotic-treated mice, germ-free mice as well as those transplanted with fecal microbiota. The gut microbiota was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. RESULTS: The structure of gut microbiota was significantly different between AP and HC, and the disturbed microbiota was closely correlated with systematic inflammation and gut barrier dysfunction. Notably, the microbial composition changed further with the worsening of AP and the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Blautia was decreased in SAP compared with MAP and MSAP. The increased capacity for the inferred pathway, bacterial invasion of epithelial cells in AP, highly correlated with the abundance of Escherichia-Shigella. Furthermore, the antibiotic-treated mice and germ-free mice exhibited alleviated pancreatic injury after AP induction and subsequent fecal microbiota transplantation in turn exacerbated the disease. CONCLUSIONS: This study identifies the gut microbiota as an important mediator during AP and its dysbiosis is associated with AP severity, which suggests its role as potential therapeutic target.
