RESUMEN

In this paper, we analyze the dynamic effect of a reservoir computer (RC) on its performance. Modified Kuramoto's coupled oscillators are used to model the RC, and synchronization, Lyapunov spectrum (and dimension), Shannon entropy, and the upper bound of the Kolmogorov-Sinai entropy are employed to characterize the dynamics of the RC. The performance of the RC is analyzed by reproducing the distribution of random, Gaussian, and quantum jumps series (shelved states) since a replica of the time evolution of a completely random series is not possible to generate. We demonstrate that hyperchaotic motion, moderate Shannon entropy, and a higher degree of synchronization of Kuramoto's oscillators lead to the best performance of the RC. Therefore, an appropriate balance of irregularity and order in the oscillator's dynamics leads to better performances.

RESUMEN

Cocaine-induced neuroinflammation plays an important role in the pathophysiology of drug addiction. Evidence suggests that the immune response contributes for memory consolidation related to place preference behavior underlying cocaine administration in mice. Conditioned place preference (CPP) is a protocol extensively used to study the rewarding and/or aversive motivational effects of drug abuse in rodents, reproducing cocaine-seeking behavior in humans. Besides the variety of apparatus used in the CPP protocol, whether different types of apparatus are able to induce the same conditioned behavior response and neurobiological changes remains to be fully explored. We hypothesize that the immune response is involved in the cocaine-induced CPP and that the type of apparatus might influence this response. Herein, two- and three-compartment apparatuses were tested using the behavioral model of CPP. Cocaine-induced CPP was demonstrated in both apparatuses. However, mice injected with cocaine had decreased levels of IL-1ß, IL-6, IL-10, and GDNF in the pre-frontal cortex, and decreased CX3CL1 in the striatum, in the CPP protocol using three compartments compared to controls. While similar levels were seen in the CPP protocol using two compartments. In conclusion, the current study demonstrated that the type of apparatus might influence the investigation of neurobiological mechanisms associated with cocaine-induced CPP. Our data also suggest that the three compartment-apparatus seems to be a more appropriate model to investigate the neuroinflammatory response related to cocaine addiction.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: It is known that the quality and quantity of milk is directly related to the dietary habits of the mother. Despite that, the rates of maternal malnutrition during lactation are increasing in several countries; thus, observing its effects on the offspring is relevant. The present study aims to verify the effects of maternal malnutrition during breastfeeding on the skulls of adult-aged Wistar rats. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Thirty-six newborn rats were divided in three groups: the control group, in which the mother received a regular commercial diet containing 23% protein in unlimited amounts; the protein-energy restriction group, in which the dam received a commercial diet containing 8% protein in unlimited amounts; the energy restricted group, in which the dam received a commercial diet containing 23% of protein in limited amounts. After weaning, all rats received the same diet as the control group until 180 days of age. Then, the rats were euthanized, and their crania were excised and measured in radiographic images. Afterwards, their skull was decalcified with nitric acid (5%) and histological samples were obtained and the thickness of the diploe was verified. Descriptive statistics and ANOVA followed by the Newman-Keuls test were performed for comparison purposes. RESULTS: It was observed that the skull from the protein-energy restriction and energy-restriction groups was smaller and thinner than that of the control group in several parameters. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal malnutrition during the lactation period caused long-term effects in skull morphology of Wistar rats. These effects could not be reversed after regulation of the diet.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Our aim was to explore the feasibility, and efficacy of a Dialectical Behavior Therapy Skill Training Group (DBT-ST) as an add-on treatment for adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in Latin America. METHOD: Adults with ADHD (n = 31) with stable medication treatment for ADHD and residual symptoms (ASRS > 20) were randomly assigned to DBT-ST (n = 16) or treatment as usual (TaU; n = 15) for 12 weeks. Feasibility was accessed by attendance and completion rates at 12 weeks. Efficacy outcomes were measured with the ASRS, and performed at 0, 6, 12, and 16 weeks. RESULTS: The DBT-ST protocol had 81.25% completion rate, with a mean attendance of 87.25% of the sessions. No significant interactions between group and time were detected for outcome measures. DISCUSSION: The DBT-ST was feasible as add-on treatment for adult patients with ADHD in Latin America. Replicating previous findings, DBT-ST has shown no significantly higher improvement in ADHD symptoms in comparison with TaU. Registered at the Clinical Trials database (NCT03326427).

RESUMEN

Some regions, such as the Northeast Region of Brazil, are still severely understudied and the trichopteran fauna of this region is not entirely known, mainly in areas from Cerrado and Caatinga biomes. Currently, 25 species have been reported from Piauí State, but most of these records are concentrated from one locality. This study aimed to update the knowledge of Trichoptera diversity in this state, including the description of a new species and new geographic records for the Northeast region and Brazil. The samples were collected in seven municipalities, using various traps. Specimens were also received from the municipality of Bom Jesus. Thirty-two species were added for Trichoptera fauna of Piauí, 14 of these represent new records for Northeast Brazil; furthermore, Neotrichia palma Flint 1982 is a new record for Brazil. Additionally, a new species, Cernotina longa sp. nov., is describe and illustrate, being the third nominal record of the genus for the Caatinga biome. Thus, with the contribution of this study, 57 species, 20 genera and seven families of caddisflies are known for Piauí State.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Knowledge of the prostatic portion of the urethra is essential to the comprehension of urinary continence phenomena. However, there are only a small number of studies that have addressed this relationship and analyzed the ultrastructure of the prostatic urethra. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A three-dimensional analysis of the fibrous components and the extracellular matrix of the prostatic urethra in 10 normal humans was performed with a scanning electron microscope. The prostates were obtained from 10 men (18 to 30 years old) who had died from accidents. The specimens were fixated in a modified Karnovsky solution for 48 h at 4°C, washed in a sodium phosphate buffered solution (PBS) for 2 h at 4°C and then incubated in 40 ml of 2 M NaOH at room temperature for 8 days (cellular digestion). Afterwards, the three-dimensional organization of the prostatic urethra stroma was observed. RESULTS: It was observed that the prostates had a narrowed fibrous septa which condensed and formed a network in order to support the submucosa. Furthermore, it was also observed that they formed a homogeneous fibrous layer (pars fibroreticularis), which lined the urethral wall. CONCLUSIONS: Knowledge of the urethra composition is essential to understand the physiopathological aspects of urinary incontinence. Moreover, our results showed a great amount of connective tissue underlying the prostatic urethra wall.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The use of ketamine as an option in the treatment of depressive disorder is growing rapidly, supported by numerous clinical trials attesting its efficacy and safety. Esketamine, the S (+) enantiomer of ketamine, is the most widely used form in the anesthetic environment in some countries, and new studies have shown that it may also be effective in depression and with better tolerability. However, no study so far has directly compared esketamine with racemic ketamine. Here we propose a protocol of a clinical trial to evaluate esketamine as a noninferior medication when compared to ketamine in the treatment of patients with treatment-resistant depression. METHODS/DESIGN: This study protocol is for a randomized, controlled, double-blind noninferiority clinical trial. Subjects will be 18 years or older, with major depression characterized as treatment-resistant. Participants will receive a single infusion of either esketamine (0.25 mg/kg) or ketamine (0.5 mg/kg) over 40 minutes. The primary outcome will be the difference in remission rates between the 2 treatment arms at 24 and 72 hours after drug infusion. Secondary outcomes will include other timepoints, measurements of cognition, dissociation, and blood biomarkers. DISCUSSION: A head-to-head study is the best way to evaluate whether the esketamine is in fact comparable to the racemic ketamine in terms of both efficacy and safety, and, if positive, it would be an initial step to increase the access to that type of treatment worldwide. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: The study was approved by the local Institutional Review Board (University Hospital Professor Edgard Santos-Federal University of Bahia-Number: 46657415.0.0000.0049). Subjects will only participate after voluntarily agreeing and signing the Informed Consent Form. The study findings will be published in peer-reviewed journals and presented at national and international conferences. TRIAL REGISTRATION: This trial has been registered in the Japan Primary Registries Network (JPRN): UMIN000032355, which is affiliated with the World Health Organization.

RESUMEN

SUMMARY: Corona mortis is classified as a connection between the inferior epigastric and obturator vessels over the superior pubic ramus. Its incidence varies among different studies. The corona mortis is an extremely important anatomical variation as it can be injured in a great number of procedures. Moreover, it can also be injured during pelvic or acetabular fractures. A male cadaver fixed in a 10 % formalin solution had its pelvic region dissected and an arterial corona mortis was observed on its right side. The left hemipelvis presented no variations whatsoever. This vessel was measured with the aid of a digital caliper. We aim to report this variation and address - from an orthopedic point of view - the clinical and surgical significance of the corona mortis.

Flow cytometry has established itself as a useful tool in veterinary practice, particularly for small animals practice. Such knowledge has made necessary the establishment of physiological values for different lymphocyte subpopulations, indispensable to understanding the dynamics of lymphoid cellularity in various pathological conditions. In this sense, the objective of this study was to determine, through cytometric technique, lymphocyte subsets of CD5+CD4+, CD5+CD8+ and CD21+ in four different breeds of domestic dogs, so to add information about the immunological profile of different breeds. A total of 40 adult dogs were used (2-7 years), being males and females of Beagles (G1, n=10), Golden Retrievers (G2, n=10), English Bulldogs (G3, n=10) and crossbreed dogs (G4, n=10). Blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture, using vacuum flasks system (K2-EDTA). Hemogram and processing of samples for flow cytometry were performed within a maximum of 24 hours after blood collection. Samples were analyzed using FACSCanto device (Becton Dickinson, San Jose, CA, USA). FACSDiva software (Becton Dickinson, San Jose, CA, USA) was used to identify and quantify the CD5+ CD4+, CD5+CD8+, and CD21+, which provided the histogram and the respective table with the number of cells identified by immunophenotyping. The data obtained for T helper lymphocyte count, T cytotoxic/suppressor lymphocyte count and B lymphocytes were tabulated and submitted to analysis of variance by F test. Tukey test at 5% probability was used to compare means between the different breeds of dogs. The average values for CD5+CD8+ cell count in peripheral blood in G1, G2, G3 and G4 were of 155, 206, 544 and 503 cells/uL, respectively. The average values for CD5+CD4+ cell count in peripheral blood in G1, G2, G3 and G4 were of 746, 642, 855 and 1101 cells/uL, respectively. The average values for CD21 + cell count in peripheral blood for G1, G2, G3 and G4 were of 171, 299, 494 and 403 cells/uL, respectively. Therefore, The average number of cells obtained for the subsets of cytotoxic T lymphocytes was significantly higher (p<0,05) in the British Bulldogs and crossbreed dogs compared to those found in Beagles and Golden Retrievers. Furthermore, it was observed that the average number of cells obtained for the subsets of B lymphocytes was significantly higher (p<0,05) in English Bulldogs compared to that of Beagles.(AU)

RESUMEN

The bladder leiomyosarcoma is a rare and agressive mesenchymal tumour, and adult women of reproductive age have a higher incidence of developing the bladder leiomyosarcoma. The pathophysiology of the disease is not certain, and its main symptoms are hematuria, dysuria and abdominal pain. There are not a considerable amount of cases described in the literature. We report a case of a giant leiomyosarcoma of the urinary bladder in a 31-year-old woman.

RESUMEN

The presence of the appendix within a femoral hernia (FH) sac is known as Garengeot's hernia (GH). We report on current study a rare case of an elderly man with a combined inguinal and Garengeot's hernia and discuss the clinical aspects. An 82-year-old man clinically stable, presented history of pain at the right inguinal region for over a week, without vomit, nausea, fever or any alteration of intestinal or urinary eliminations. Clinical examination revealed a FH and the ultrasonography confirmed the hernia sac. During the surgery, the appendix was recognized within the sac, and then, the patient underwent appendectomy and hernia repair. In conclusion, the presence of the vermiform appendix in a FH sac is rare, thus, requiring knowledge of the surgeon regarding this clinical entity. Prompt diagnosis and appropriate surgical treatment is the key to avoid complications.

RESUMEN

Zenker's diverticulum is a form of esophageal and pharyngeal obstruction located at the Killian-Laimer triangle. It is relatively common in elderly man (seventh or eighth decade of life), and its pathophysiology is not completely understood, albeit theories regarding dysfunction of the upper esophageal sphincter were reported. The main symptoms are dysphagia and odynophagia, but it can complicate to aspiration and perforation of the pharyngeal pouch; also, it can be asymptomatic. Diagnosis is provided through a barium esophagogram. Treatment can be performed through endoscopic surgery, diverticulopexy and myotomy of the cricopharyngeus muscle, although there is no consensus among surgeons regarding the treatment of choice. We report a case of pharyngeal obstruction due to Zenker's diverticulum which caused massive weight loss in a 76-year-old male.

RESUMEN

Rectal fecal samples were collected daily on 10 consecutive days in November 2004 from 11 weaned beef heifers to assess daily variation in fecal oocyst count and species composition. Subsequent samples were collected from the same animals on 15 April 2005 and 9 June 2005. Oocyst numbers were determined by the modified McMaster's test, and species were identified by examination of oocysts recovered with the Wisconsin sugar flotation technique. Soil samples were collected from the heifer pasture on 8 June 2005, and oocysts were quantified and identified to species. Mean fecal oocyst counts varied little at all sampling dates ranging from 134-377 oocysts/g. Ten Eimeria spp. were identified in fecal samples collected in November and April and 11 in June. Eimeria bovis was the most common species identified at all samplings. Mean species composition showed little variation during the 10-day sampling period in November, remained similar in April, and varied slightly in June. Twelve Eimeria spp. were identified in soil samples in proportions similar to those seen in fecal samples. The results indicate that clinically normal weanling beef heifers are likely to be infected with a diverse, but relatively stable, community of Eimeria spp.
