RESUMEN

We report studies of ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray composition via analysis of depth of air shower maximum (X(max)), for air shower events collected by the High-Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) observatory. The HiRes data are consistent with a constant elongation rate d/d[log(E)] of 47.9+/-6.0(stat)+/-3.2(syst) g/cm2/decade for energies between 1.6 and 63 EeV, and are consistent with a predominantly protonic composition of cosmic rays when interpreted via the QGSJET01 and QGSJET-II high-energy hadronic interaction models. These measurements constrain models in which the galactic-to-extragalactic transition is the cause of the energy spectrum ankle at 4x10(18) eV.

RESUMEN

The High Resolution Fly's Eye (HiRes) experiment has observed the Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin suppression (called the GZK cutoff) with a statistical significance of five standard deviations. HiRes' measurement of the flux of ultrahigh energy cosmic rays shows a sharp suppression at an energy of 6 x 10(19) eV, consistent with the expected cutoff energy. We observe the ankle of the cosmic-ray energy spectrum as well, at an energy of 4 x 10(18) eV. We describe the experiment, data collection, and analysis and estimate the systematic uncertainties. The results are presented and the calculation of the statistical significance of our observation is described.

RESUMEN

We describe a neutron radiography technique that can be used to map the distribution of 3He impurities in liquid 4He, providing direct and quantitative access to underlying transport processes. Images reflecting finite normal- and superfluid-component 4He velocity fields are presented.

RESUMEN

We have measured the cosmic ray spectrum above 10(17.2) eV using the two air-fluorescence detectors of the High Resolution Fly's Eye observatory operating in monocular mode. We describe the detector, phototube, and atmospheric calibrations, as well as the analysis techniques for the two detectors. We fit the spectrum to a model consisting of galactic and extragalactic sources.

RESUMEN

We present the first measurements of the survival time of ultracold neutrons (UCNs) in solid deuterium (SD2). This critical parameter provides a fundamental limitation to the effectiveness of superthermal UCN sources that utilize solid ortho-deuterium as the source material. These measurements are performed utilizing a SD2 source coupled to a spallation source of neutrons, providing a demonstration of UCN production in this geometry and permitting systematic studies of the influence of thermal up-scatter and contamination with para-deuterium on the UCN survival time.

RESUMEN

A multiresidue method for the determination of alloxydim (methyl 2, 2-dimethyl-4, 6-dioxo-5-[1-[2-propenyloxy)amino]butylidene]cyclohexanec arb oxylate), clethodim (E, E)-(+/-)-2-[1-[[3-chloro-2-propenyl)oxy]imino]propyl]-5-[2-(ethylthio )propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one), sethoxydim ((+/-)-2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-ethylthio)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2 -cy clohexen-1-one), and two metabolites, clethodim sulfoxide ((E, E)-(+/-)-2-[1-[[3-chloro-2-propenyl)oxy]imino]propyl]-5-[2-(ethylsulf inyl)propyl]-3-hydroxy-2-cyclohexen-1-one) and sethoxydim sulfoxide ((+/-)-2-[1-(ethoxyimino)butyl]-5-[2-ethylsulfinyl)propyl]-3 -hydroxy- 2-cyclohexen-1-one), in water by high-performance liquid chromatography/electrospray/mass spectrometry (LC/ES/MS) is reported. River water and distilled water were spiked at 0.08 and 0.8 microgram L(-1) with all three herbicides, which were then extracted from the water by C(18)-SPE (SPE = solid-phase extraction). The herbicides and metabolites were quantified and confirmed using selected ion monitoring. The percent recoveries of the herbicides from water spiked at 0.8 microgram L(-1) were as follows: alloxydim, 117 +/- 11%; clethodim, 96 +/- 14%; sethoxydim, 89 +/- 13%. There was no evidence of oxidation of clethodim and sethoxydim during the extraction to their respective sulfoxides. The limit of quantitation was <0.1 microgram L(-1). We have shown that we can analyze and confirm three cyclohexanedione oxime herbicides and two metabolites in water by LC/ES/MS. This multiresidue method should also be appropriate for other cyclohexanedione oximes.

RESUMEN

A preliminary report of a new bunion procedure is described. This new procedure provides a relative reduction of the intermetatarsal angle and corrects the proximal articular set angle, yet incorporates the principles of compressive rigid internal fixation. The procedure is best summarized as a combination of the Kalish modification of the Austin bunionectomy and the Green-Laird modification of the Reverdin bunionectomy.
