RESUMEN

Orthodontic tooth movement determines a biological response of all the tissues surrounding the teeth to which force is applied. The aim of this study is to evaluate which ideal orthodontic force, at the biological level, arouses an acute inflammatory response on periodontal tissues, and the duration of the force in order to establish an ideal experimental model of dental movement. The periodontal ligament and the alveolar bone change abruptly due to the biochemical adaptive response, resulting in a re-organization of the intracellular and the extracellular matrix. There is a modification of the local vascularization which stimulates a cascade production, synthesis and the release of arachidonic acid, metabolites, proteins, such as cytokines, and growth factors. Every dentist can control and should know the above-mentioned mechanism. Moreover, the production of proteins by modulating the direction and the intensity of the force can be changed but, above all, the duration.

RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of a single 4 mg injection of submucosal betamethasone after extraction of impacted third molars. Single-centre, single-blinded, parallel group study; Forty-three patients were submitted to impacted third molar extraction. In this study, 4 mg single-dose submucosal betamethasone was injected in the interventional group, while in the control group nothing was injected. Postoperative measurement included pain via the VAS scale, swelling and trismus with facial measurements and maximum mouth openings, and finally nerve sensitivity. There was a significant difference between the two groups regarding trismic pain and edema. The use of a single 4 mg submucosal betamethasone injection leads to a reduction of oedema, trismus and pain in patients undergoing impacted third molar extraction. .

RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to compare the efficacy of celecoxib and ibuprofen in reducing postoperative sequelae following the surgical removal of impacted mandibular third molars. Ninety-eight subjects who needed surgical extraction of an impacted mandibular third molar were selected for the study. All subjects were randomly allocated to receive one of the following treatments twice a day for 5days after surgery: placebo (n=32), ibuprofen (n=33), or celecoxib (n=33). The primary outcome chosen was postoperative pain, which was evaluated using the visual analogue scale (VAS) score recorded by each patient. The secondary outcomes chosen were changes in postoperative swelling and maximum mouth opening values compared to preoperative ones. Compared to placebo, treatment with celecoxib and ibuprofen resulted in improvements in the primary outcome. Furthermore, when compared to the other groups, patients in the celecoxib group showed a significant reduction in postoperative pain scores at 6h (P<0.001), 12h (P=0.011), and 24h (P=0.041) after surgery. Regarding swelling and maximum mouth opening values, there were no significant differences between the groups at each follow-up session. This study demonstrated that treatment with celecoxib decreased the incidence and severity of postoperative pain following third molar surgery compared to ibuprofen and placebo.

RESUMEN

Dental agenesis has a great clinical significance due to its frequency during daily practice and the therapeutic problems that can arise from it. This paper will explore the incidence of dental agenesis, its diagnosis and how this anomaly affects the teeth differently. The second subsequent paper will look at its treatment and management.

RESUMEN

Clinical tutoring meant as guidance and support for the achievement of professional competency (which includes attitudes, knowledge, and skills) has proved itself as a critical opportunity for nursing students' clinical learning. The tutor's skill develops itself especially through the acquisition of clinical and psychopedagogical expertise unquestionably necessary to meet students' educational needs. For the third year the Università "Campus Bio-Medico" di Roma, has started a Specialisation course for Clinical Tutors. The course objective is to achieve psychopedagogical, clinical, ethical and managerial competency. Although the course always maintains the same cultural, methodological, and managerial setting, each year it develops different key aspect linked to the participants' interests and educational needs. In fact, the students as active participants of their learning and well aware of the tutors' role, determine themselves such objectives. This paper is based on the principal themes of this year's course as they have been discussed and developed in final papers by the students.

RESUMEN

The Authors have evaluated the diagnostic contribution offered by the serum dosage of the antigen CA-125 in the diagnostics of pelvic masses. This method has been compared with the objective and echographic evaluation, as a noninvasive method of enquiry in the diagnosis of malignant neoplasias of the ovary. The Authors endorse the increase in diagnostic sensitivity brought about by the evaluation of this marker, above all if it is inserted into an integrated diagnosis.

RESUMEN

Two methods for the determination of methionine in proteins have been used to estimate the extent of methionine sulfoxide obtained upon exposure of proteins to oxidizing agents. Both methods are based on prior treatment with cyanogen bromide, which attacks methionines (but not the sulfoxide derivative) with the resultant formation of methyl thiocyanate and peptides. The amount of methyl thiocyanate is determined quantitatively by gas chromatography, while the number of peptides is ascertained by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The gas chromatographic estimate of CH3SCN offers an accurate and precise method (down to nanogram values) for the quantitative determination of methionine sulfoxide in proteins. Due to its simplicity and the use of low-cost equipment, the electrophoretic method appears to be a valuable complement to the gas chromatographic method, and the two methods in conjunction provide novel results.
