RESUMEN

With growing concerns over water management in rivers worldwide, researchers are seeking innovative solutions to monitor and understand changing flood patterns. In a noteworthy advancement, stakeholders interested in the changing flood patterns of the Murray Darling Basin (MDB) in Australia, covering an area of 1 million km2, can now access a consistent timeseries of water depth maps for the entire basin. The dataset covers the period from 1988 to 2022 at two-monthly timestep and was developed using remotely sensed imagery and a flood depth estimation model at a spatial resolution of ≈30 m, providing a comprehensive picture of maximum observed inundation depth across the MDB. Validation against 13 hydrodynamic model outputs for different parts of the MDB yielded a mean absolute error of 0.49 m, demonstrating reasonable accuracy and reliability of the dataset. The resulting dataset is best suited to system-wide analysis but might also be useful for those interested in the history of flooding at specific locations in the system. We provide the dataset, visualization tools, and examples to support ongoing research.

RESUMEN

We report on the generation of kW-class, continuous-wave, radially polarized laser radiation in an Yb:LuAG thin-disk laser (TDL). Output powers of up to 980 W were achieved with optical efficiency of 50.5% with respect to the incident pump power of the TDL. The degree of radial polarization was measured to be 95.5% at maximum output power. This was achieved by the integration of a new generation of broadband, large-area grating-waveguide mirror with unprecedented high polarization discrimination as the end-mirror in the TDL resonator.

RESUMEN

An output power of 2.5 W at a wavelength of 665 nm was obtained from a quantum-well (QW) and multipass-pumped AlGaInP-based vertical-external-cavity surface-emitting laser operated at a heat sink temperature of 10°C. Intracavity frequency doubling resulted in an output power of 820 mW at a wavelength of 333 nm. To the best of our knowledge, these are the highest continuous wave output powers from this type of laser both at the fundamental wavelength and in frequency-doubled operation. In fundamental wavelength operation, further power scaling by increasing the pump-spot size increased the output power to 3.3 W. However, at this power level, the laser was highly unstable. When the laser was operated at 50% pump duty cycle, a reproducible and stable peak output power of 3.6 W was obtained. These results demonstrate the potential of optical QW pumping combined with multipass pumping for the operation of AlGaInP-based semiconductor disk lasers.
