RESUMEN

A reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), a leading-edge technology, represents a new paradigm for adaptive control of electromagnetic waves between a source and a user. While RIS technology has proven effective in manipulating radio frequency waves using passive elements such as diodes and MEMS, its application in the optical domain is challenging. The main difficulty lies in meeting key performance indicators, with the most critical being accurate and self-adjusting positioning. This work presents an alternative RIS design methodology driven by an all-silicon structure and fluid infiltration, to achieve real-time control of focal length toward a designated user, thereby enabling secure data transmission. To validate the concept, both numerical simulations and experimental investigations of the RIS design methodology are conducted to demonstrate the performance of fluid-infiltrated metalens-driven RIS for this application. When combined with different fluids, the resulting ultra-compact RIS exhibits exceptional varifocal abilities, ranging from 0.4 to 0.5 mm, thereby confirming the adaptive tuning capabilities of the design. This may significantly enhance the modulation of optical waves and promote the development of RIS-based applications in wireless communications and secure data-transmission integrated photonic devices.

Herein, we evaluated the effects of Gonadotropin hormone-releasing hormone (GnRH) administration 84 h after medroxyprogesterone acetate (MAP) sponge removal on follicular growth, ovulation timing, and pregnancy per artificial insemination (AI) in cosynchronized postpartum Nili Ravi buffaloes. In this study, 58 Nili Ravi postpartum buffaloes (DIM = 103 ± 1.64) were randomly divided into two treatment groups (n = 29/treatment): GnRH-TAI-84 and TAI-84. All buffaloes were administered a MAP sponge for seven days. Upon MAP sponge removal, all the subjects received prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α), and Timed AI (TAI) was performed 84 hours after sponge removal. In the GnRH-TAI-84 group, the buffaloes received GnRH alongside insemination, whereas in the TAI-84 group, the buffaloes were inseminated without GnRH administration. Follicle diameter and blood estradiol levels were measured every 6 h from 72-108 h after MAP sponge removal. The animals were checked for pregnancy using ultrasonography 40 days after AI. Animals subjected to the GnRH-TAI-84 protocol had a higher follicular growth rate and preovulatory follicle size than those in the TAI-84 group. The follicular diameter was also larger in animals that received GnRH-TAI-84 than in those that received TAI-84 90 and 96 h after MAP sponge removal. Buffaloes in the GnRH-TAI-84 group had lower estradiol concentrations at 90, 96, 102, and 108 h than those in the TAI-84 group. Ovulation in GnRH-TAI-84 buffaloes occurred 11 h earlier than that in buffaloes from the TAI-84 group. A shorter interval between AI and ovulation in GnRH-TAI-84 buffaloes (14 h vs. 25 h) led to greater pregnancies per AI (62% vs. 17%) compared to buffaloes from the TAI-84 group.

Optical wireless communication (OWC), with its blazing data transfer speed and unparalleled security, is a futuristic technology for wireless connectivity. Despite the significant advancements in OWC, the realization of tunable devices for on-demand and versatile connectivity still needs to be explored. This presents a considerable limitation in utilizing adaptive technologies to improve signal directivity and optimize data transfer. This study proposes a unique platform that utilizes tunable, fluid-responsive multifunctional metasurfaces offering dynamic and unprecedented control over electromagnetic wave manipulation to enhance the performance of OWC networks. We have achieved real-time, on-demand beam steering with vary-focusing capability by integrating the fabricated metasurfaces with different isotropic fluids. Furthermore, the designed metasurfaces are capable of polarization-based switching of the diffracted light beams to enhance overall productivity. Our research has showcased the potential of fluid-responsive tunable metasurfaces in revolutionizing OWC networks by significantly improving transmission reliability and signal quality through real-time adjustments. The proposed methodology is verified by designing and fabricating an all-dielectric metasurface measuring 500 µm × 500 µm and experimentally investigating its fluid-responsive vary-focal capability. By incorporating fluid-responsive properties into spin-decoupled metasurfaces, we aim to develop advanced high-tech optical devices and systems to simplify beam-steering and improve performance, adaptability, and functionality, making the devices suitable for various practical applications.

Tibetan tea changes during microorganism fermentation. Research on microorganisms in Tibetan tea has focused on their identification, while studies on the influence of specific microorganisms on the components and health functions of Tibetan tea are lacking. Bacillus licheniformis was inoculated into Tibetan tea for intensive fermentation, and the components of B. licheniformis-fermented tea (BLT) were detected by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-TOF-MS), and then the effects of BLT on intestinal probiotic functions were investigated by experiments on mice. The results revealed the metabolites of BLT include polyphenols, alkaloids, terpenoids, amino acids, and lipids. Intensified fermentation also improved the antioxidant capacity in vivo and the protective effect on the intestinal barrier of Tibetan tea. In addition, the enhanced fermentation of Tibetan tea exerted intestinal probiotic effects by modulating the relative abundance of short-chain fatty acid-producing bacteria in the intestinal flora. Therefore, intensive fermentation with B. licheniformis can improve the health benefits of Tibetan tea.

Peri-urban environments are significant reservoirs of wastewater, and releasing this untreated wastewater from these resources poses severe environmental and ecological threats. Wastewater mitigation through sustainable approaches is an emerging area of interest. Algae offers a promising strategy for carbon-neutral valorization and recycling of urban wastewater. Aiming to provide a proof-of-concept for complete valorization and recycling of urban wastewater in a peri-urban environment in a closed loop system, a newly isolated biocrust-forming cyanobacterium Desertifilum tharense BERC-3 was evaluated. Here, the highest growth and lipids productivity were achieved in urban wastewater compared to BG11 and synthetic wastewater. D. tharense BERC-3 showed 60-95% resource recovery efficiency and decreased total dissolved solids, chemical oxygen demand, biological oxygen demand, nitrate nitrogen, ammonia nitrogen and total phosphorus contents of the water by 60.37%, 81.11%, 82.75%, 87.91%, 85.13%, 85.41%, 95.87%, respectively, making it fit for agriculture as per WHO's safety limits. Soil supplementation with 2% wastewater-cultivated algae as a soil amender, along with its irrigation with post-treated wastewater, improved the nitrogen content and microbial activity of the soil by 0.3-2.0-fold and 0.5-fold, respectively. Besides, the availability of phosphorus was also improved by 1.66-fold. The complete bioprocessing pipeline offered a complete biomass utilization. This study demonstrated the first proof-of-concept of integrating resource recovery and resource recycling using cyanobacteria to develop a peri-urban algae farming system. This can lead to establishing wastewater-driven algae cultivation systems as novel enterprises for rural migrants moving to urban areas.

Microalgae growth-promoting bacteria (MGPB), both actinobacteria and non-actinobacteria, have received considerable attention recently because of their potential to develop microalgae-bacteria co-culture strategies for improved efficiency and sustainability of the water-energy-environment nexus. Owing to their diverse metabolic pathways and ability to adapt to diverse conditions, microalgal-MGPB co-cultures could be promising biological systems under uncertain environmental and nutrient conditions. This review proposes the recent updates and progress on MGPB for microalgae cultivation through co-culture strategies. Firstly, potential MGPB strains for microalgae cultivation are introduced. Following, microalgal-MGPB interaction mechanisms and applications of their co-cultures for biomass production and wastewater treatment are reviewed. Moreover, state-of-the-art studies on synthetic biology and metabolic network analysis, along with the challenges and prospects of opting these approaches for microalgal-MGPB co-cultures are presented. It is anticipated that these strategies may significantly improve the sustainability of microalgal-MGPB co-cultures for wastewater treatment, biomass valorization, and bioproducts synthesis in a circular bioeconomy paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Wuliangye strong aroma baijiu (hereafter, Wuliangye baijiu) is a traditional Chinese grain liquor containing short-chain fatty acids, ethyl caproate, ethyl lactate, other trace components, and a large proportion of ethanol. The effects of Wuliangye baijiu on intestinal stem cells and intestinal epithelial development have not been elucidated. Here, the role of Wuliangye baijiu in intestinal epithelial regeneration and gut microbiota modulation was investigated by administering a Lieber-DeCarli chronic ethanol liquid diet in a mouse model to mimic long-term (8 weeks') light/moderate alcohol consumption (1.6 g kg-1 day-1) in healthy human adults. RESULTS: Wuliangye baijiu promoted colonic crypt proliferation in mice. According to immunofluorescence and reverse transcription-quantitative polymerase chain reaction analyses, compared with the ethanol-only treatment, Wuliangye baijiu increased the number of intestinal stem cells and goblet cells and the expression of enteroendocrine cell differentiation markers in the mouse colon. Furthermore, gut microbiota analysis showed an increase in the relative abundance of microbiota related to intestinal homeostasis following Wuliangye baijiu administration. Notably, increased abundance of Bacteroidota, Faecalibaculum, Lachnospiraceae, and Blautia may play an essential role in promoting stem-cell-mediated intestinal epithelial development and maintaining intestinal homeostasis. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, these findings suggest that Wuliangye baijiu can be used to regulate intestinal stem cell proliferation and differentiation in mice and to alter gut microbiota distributions, thereby promoting intestinal homeostasis. This research elucidates the mechanism by which Wuliangye baijiu promotes intestinal health. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Carbon electrode-based perovskite solar cells (c-PSCs) without a hole transport layer (HTL) have obtained a significant interest owing to their cost-effective, stable, and simplified structure. However, their application is limited by low efficiency and the prevalence of high-temperature processed electron transport layer (ETL), e.g. TiO2, which also has poor optoelectronic properties, including low conductivity and mobility. In this study, a series of organic materials, namely PCBM ((Park et al., 2023; Park et al., 2023) [6,6]-phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester, C72H14O2), Alq3 (Al(C9H6NO)3), BCP (2,9-Dimethyl-4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, C26H20N2), C60, ICBA (indene-C60 bisadduct, C78H16) and PEIE (poly (ethylenimine) ethoxylated, (C37H24O6N2)n) have been numerically analyzed in SCAPS-1D solar simulator to explore alternative potential ETL materials for HTL-free c-PSCs. The presented device has FTO/ETL/CH3NH3PbI3/carbon structure, and its performance is optimized based on significant design parameters. The highest achieved PCEs for PCBM, Alq3, BCP, C60, ICBA, and PEIE-based devices are 22.85%, 19.08%, 20.99%, 25.51%, 23.91%, and 22.53%, respectively. These PCEs are obtained for optimum absorber thickness for each case, with an acceptor concentration of 1.0 × 1017 cm-3 and defect density of 2.5 × 1013 cm-3. The C60-based cell has been found to outperform with device parameters as Voc of 1.29 V, Jsc of 23.76 mA/cm2, and FF of 82.67%. As the design lacks stability when only organic materials are employed, each of the presented devices have been analyzed by applying BiI3, LiF, and ZnO as protective layers with the performances not compromised. We believe that our obtained results will be of great interest in developing stable and efficient HTL-free c-PSCs.

In the future, novel and highly pathogenic viruses may re-emerge, leading to a surge in healthcare demand. It is essential for urban epidemic control to investigate different cities' spatiotemporal spread characteristics and medical carrying capacity during the early stages of COVID-19. This study employed textual analysis, mathematical statistics, and spatial analysis methods to examine the situation in six highly affected Chinese cities. The findings reveal that these cities experienced three phases during the initial outbreak of COVID-19: "unknown-origin incubation", "Wuhan-related outbreak", and "local exposure outbreak". Cities with a high number of confirmed cases exhibited a multicore pattern, while those with fewer cases displayed a single-core pattern. The cores were distributed hierarchically in the central built-up areas of cities' economic, political, or transportation centers. The radii of these cores shrank as the central built-up area's level decreased, indicating a hierarchical decay and a core-edge structure. It suggests that decentralized built environments (non-clustered economies and populations) are less likely to facilitate large-scale epidemic clusters. Additionally, the deployment of designated hospitals in these cities was consistent with the spatial distribution of the epidemic; however, their carrying capacity requires urgent improvement. Ultimately, the essence of prevention and control is the governance of human activities and the efficient management of limited resources about individuals, places, and materials through leveraging IT and GIS technologies to address supply-demand contradictions.

Pakistan, among the top five most water-stressed nations globally, grapples with water scarcity owing to inadequate treatment infrastructure and groundwater overextraction. We demonstrate a successful nature-based closed-loop system to treat wastewater from urban vehicle-washing facilities, previously reliant on groundwater. An eco-friendly integrated system containing floating treatment wetlands (FTWs), subsurface flow constructed wetlands (SSF-CWs), and sand filtration (SF) was designed and installed at three vehicle-washing facilities for wastewater treatment and reuse in a loop. While the system is still operational after years, a consistent and significant reduction in water quality indicators is recorded, successfully meeting the national environmental quality standards of Pakistan. By reducing per unit water treatment costs to as low as $0.0163/m³ and achieving payback periods under a year, the embrace of these closed-loop strategies vividly underscores the imperative of transitioning to a circular economy in the domains of wastewater treatment and resource conservation.

BACKGROUND: COVID-19 pandemic had disrupted the teaching in most of the educational institutes worldwide. It has tested the readiness of educational institutes in their ability to deal with crisis. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the perception of health sciences faculty toward online education during the period of pandemic in Pakistan. METHODS: This cross-sectional research determined the perception using online survey which had been taken from the study conducted by Almahasees et al. Questions related to faculty's perception regarding IT skills, online classes taking more effort than on-campus learning, online platforms having adequate tools to facilitate teaching. Data was analyzed using SPSS. Statistical tests comprised of descriptive statistics and Kruskal-Walli's test. RESULTS: From a total of 318 participants, there were 234 females and 84 males. A statistically significant association was identified between field of specialization and competency to teach online (p = 0.022). Faculty stated that more efforts were required to teach online (p <  0.001). Most of the tutors reported virtual sessions helped improved the interaction with their students (p <  0.001). Most of the time faculty had to prompt students to complete their assignments on time (p <  0.001). Many of the faculty members disagreed that delivering virtual sessions from home was quite ineffective (p = 0.221) and reported experiencing distractions (p <  0.001). CONCLUSION: This study showed that online learning proved less effective than face-to-face learning. The main drawback of distance learning was the lack of teacher-student interaction. Online learning promotes student-centered learning and could be applied in situations of crisis like the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: A low neurosurgeon-to-patient ratio persists in many developing nations including Pakistan. We aimed to investigate the perceptions of medical students regarding neurosurgery as a first step toward recognizing this problem and potentially suggesting ways to solve it. METHODS: A questionnaire was designed comprising 3 sections: 1) demographics, 2) possible challenges and perceptions regarding neurosurgery as a profession, and 3) general perceptions about neurosurgery. Statistical analysis was conducted, and a P value < 0.05 was considered significant. RESULTS: Of 387 responses received, 44.4% of male respondents and 50.6% of female respondents revealed intent to consider opting for neurosurgery as a profession. Regression analysis revealed inadequate dexterity (P = 0.001) and inability to carry out private practice (P = 0.002) were responsible for increased likelihood of opting out of neurosurgery by medical students. CONCLUSIONS: This study identified the perceptions that may influence the decision to pursue neurosurgical training among physicians early in their careers. Interventions including availability of day care facilities for children and introduction of curricula to promote neurosurgical knowledge in clinical training are expected to encourage the decision to pursue neurosurgery among medical students in Pakistan.

Switched filter banks find widespread application in frequency-hopping radar systems and communication networks with multiple operating frequencies, especially in situations demanding elevated filter element isolation. In this paper, the design and implementation of a highly isolated switchable narrow-bandpass filter bank architecture using hairpin microstrip topology is presented. The filter bank has four discrete bandpass filters with passbands of 2.0-2.2 GHz, 2.3-2.5 GHz, 3.1-3.3 GHz, and 3.9-4.1 GHz. These filters span the radar S-frequency band (2.0-4.0 GHz). In order to switch between channels with a switching speed of nanoseconds, low-loss and highly isolated SP4T switches are implemented. Advanced design system (ADS) software is used to design the various filter functionalities, and the entire system is tested on a vector network analyzer (VNA). The proposed architecture makes it much easier to put the filter bank into practice and switch it to the desired frequency, which is useful for radar receiver applications.

Peripheral blood smear examination is one of the basic steps in the evaluation of different blood cells. It is a confirmatory step after an automated complete blood count analysis. Manual microscopy is time-consuming and requires professional laboratory expertise. Therefore, the turn-around time for peripheral smear in a health care center is approximately 3-4 hours. To avoid the traditional method of manual counting under the microscope a computerized automation of peripheral blood smear examination has been adopted, which is a challenging task in medical diagnostics. In recent times, deep learning techniques have overcome the challenges associated with human microscopic evaluation of peripheral smears and this has led to reduced cost and precise diagnosis. However, their application can be significantly improved by the availability of annotated datasets. This study presents a large customized annotated blood cell dataset (named the Bio-Net dataset from healthy individuals) and blood cell detection and counting in the peripheral blood smear images. A mini-version of the dataset for specialized WBC-based image processing tasks is also equipped to classify the healthy and mature WBCs in their respective classes. An object detection algorithm called You Only Look Once (YOLO) with a refashion disposition has been trained on the novel dataset to automatically detect and classify blood cells into RBCs, WBCs, and platelets and compare the results with other publicly available datasets to highlight the versatility. In short the introduction of the Bio-Net dataset and AI-powered detection and counting offers a significant potential for advancement in biomedical research for analyzing and understanding biological data.

This study examined the impact of cyclicity (with or without cycle corpus luteum; CL) on oocyte quality and embryonic development in buffaloes. We collected oocytes from the ovaries of slaughtered buffaloes (N = 158 cyclic; n = 316 ovaries and N = 177 acyclic; n = 353 ovaries). Blood progesterone concentration and number of oocytes per ovary were higher in cyclic buffaloes. Cyclic buffalo ovaries produce higher oocytes with I + II and fewer III + IV grades. Oocytes from cyclic buffaloes had a higher maturation rate based on cumulus expansion, cleavage rate and embryo development to the 8-cell, morula and blastocyst stages than acyclic buffaloes. In conclusion, oocytes recovered from the ovaries of the cyclic buffaloes showed improved oocyte competence and subsequent in vitro blastocyst development.

Angle-dependent next-generation displays have potential applications in 3D stereoscopic and head-mounted displays, image combiners, and encryption for augmented reality (AR) and security. Metasurfaces enable such exceptional functionalities with groundbreaking achievements in efficient displays over the past decades. However, limitations in angular dispersion control make them unfit for numerous nanophotonic applications. Here, we propose a spin-selective angle-dependent all-dielectric metasurface with a unique design strategy to manifest distinct phase information at different incident angles of light. As a proof of concept, the phase masks of two images are encoded into the metasurface and projected at the desired focal plane under different angles of left circularly polarized (LCP) light. Specifically, the proposed multifunctional metasurface generates two distinct holographic images under LCP illumination at angles of +35 and -35°. The presented holographic displays may provide a feasible route toward multifunctional meta-devices for potential AR displays, encrypted imaging, and information storage applications.

Due to Butylparaben (BuP) widespread application in cosmetics, food, pharmaceuticals, and its presence as an environmental residue, human and animal exposure to BuP is common, potentially posing hazards to both human and animal health. Congenital heart disease is already a serious problem. However, the effects of BuP on the developing heart and its underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Here, zebrafish embryos were exposed to environmentally and human-relevant concentrations of BuP (0.6 mg/L, 1.2 mg/L, and 1.8 mg/L, calculated but not measured) at 6 h post-fertilization (hpf) and were treated until 72 hpf. Exposure to BuP led to cardiac morphological defects and cardiac dysfunction in zebrafish embryos, manifesting symptoms similar to systolic heart failure. The etiology of BuP-induced systolic heart failure in zebrafish embryos is multifactorial, including cardiomyocyte apoptosis, endocardial and atrioventricular valve damage, insufficient myocardial energy, impaired Ca2+ homeostasis, depletion of cardiac-resident macrophages, cardiac immune non-responsiveness, and cardiac oxidative stress. However, excessive accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the cardiac region and cardiac immunosuppression (depletion of cardiac-resident macrophages and cardiac immune non-responsiveness) may be the predominant factors. In conclusion, this study indicates that BuP is a potential hazardous substance that can cause adverse effects on the developing heart and provides evidence and insights into the pathological mechanisms by which BuP leads to cardiac dysfunction. It may help to prevent the BuP-based congenital heart disease heart failure in human through ameliorating strategies and BuP discharge policies, while raising awareness to prevent the misuse of preservatives.

Background The diagnosis of acute appendicitis has remained difficult despite it being one of the most common surgical emergencies in the world. One of the most frequently used scoring systems is the Modified Alvarado Score (MAS). However, the MAS has been known to be less efficient in Asian populations. To overcome this issue, the Raja Isteri Pengiran Anak Saleha Appendicitis (RIPASA) score has been specifically developed to improve the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in Asian populations. This study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of the RIPASA score compared to the MAS for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis in a Southeast Asian population keeping histopathology as the gold standard. Methodology The study group comprised 150 patients. Data were collected from each patient using a simple proforma to ascertain both the MAS and the RIPASA score for each patient at the time of presentation. The patients then underwent open appendectomy and histopathology was used as the gold standard to determine the presence or absence of acute appendicitis in the excised specimens. Results The RIPASA score had a sensitivity and specificity of 89.83% and 59.38%, respectively, compared to 64.41% and 53.12%, respectively, for the MAS. Diagnostic accuracy was similarly higher for the RIPASA score at 83.33% versus 62.00% for the MAS. Conclusions The RIPASA score is superior to the MAS for the diagnosis of acute appendicitis. Using the RIPASA score instead of the MAS in Southeast Asian populations can lead to a more accurate and timely clinical diagnosis of patients with suspected acute appendicitis and help improve patient outcomes.

Background Vitamin D (VD) deficiency is common in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). VD deficiency and its associated factors are understudied in Pakistan. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of VD deficiency and its association with microalbuminuria in patients with T2DM. Methods This descriptive cross-sectional study was performed on 110 patients diagnosed with T2DM aged between 30 and 65 years in the outpatient department clinic of diabetes in Benazir Bhutto Hospital, Rawalpindi, for around eight months from November 2022 to June 2023. Non-probability sampling technique and established inclusion and exclusion criteria were used for patient recruitment. Ethical approval and informed consent were also waived before data collection. Data collection was done by an interview-based and self-designed questionnaire. Data analysis was carried out via descriptive statistics along with chi-square, independent-samples t-test, and Pearson correlation in Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) version 25 (Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.). Results The means of the study population for age, serum VD, and UACR (urine spot for albumin-to-creatinine ratio) were 48.50±15.67 years, 28.16±15.34 ng/mL, and 29.69± 87.22 µg/mg, respectively. The incidences of VD deficiency and microalbuminuria in the study population were 43.64% and 28.20%, respectively. VD deficiency was significantly associated with age group (p=0.002), gender (p=0.008), and albuminuria status (p=0.004). The comparison of means of UACR between the VD deficiency group and the non-VD deficiency group was also significant (0.001). VD deficiency was higher among older age groups, female gender, and patients with microalbuminuria. A significant negative correlation between serum VD level and UACR (microalbuminuria) (p=0.002) was present. Conclusion VD deficiency incidence was notably high in the study population. Older age, female gender, and microalbuminuria were found to elevate the VD deficiency to a crucial level. Serum VD deficiency and microalbuminuria were significantly and negatively correlated. Therefore, VD level should be monitored intermittently in T2DM, so that we could prevent the progression of T2DM timely.

Wireless devices have become extremely inexpensive and popular in recent years. The two most significant advantages of wireless devices over wired ones are convenience and flexibility. Considering this, a wireless mouse pad prototype for access has been developed in this study. A capacitive sensors-based mouse pad with basic operations and conventional features has been developed using sensing arrays on paper. A facile, do-it-yourself fabrication process was utilized to develop a cost-effective, thin, wearable, and cleanroom-free wireless mouse cursor control (MCC) pad. The ablation process was used to cut the traces of conductive tape and paste them onto the paper to develop the MCC pad. The pad was connected with Espressif Systems (ESP)32 to wirelessly control the cursor of mobile and laptop. The capacitive touch sensor array-based pad is easy to reproduce and recycle. This pad can contribute to future advancements in thin human-machine interfaces, soft robotics, and medical and healthcare applications.
