Recurrent outbreaks of oral infection and isolated cases characterize the new epidemiological scenario of Chagas disease (CD) in the Brazilian Amazon. Acute Chagas disease (ACD) is common in Pará and Amazonas, Northeastern and Northwestern Brazilian Amazonia. In the present study, we describe the first molecularly characterized autochthonous case of ACD in Rondônia, Southwestern Amazonia. The patient, a 39-year-old male resident in the small city of Cujubim, presented typical ACD symptoms: fever, asthenia, myalgia, progressive dyspnea, swelling of the legs, and tiredness at minimal efforts, all compatible with ACD and indicative of cardiac involvement. A thick blood drop test revealed trypomastigote forms of Trypanosoma cruzi genotyped as TcIV. An epidemiological investigation ruled out oral infection, and support for vectorial transmission included the finding of Panstrongylus geniculatus positive for T. cruzi (TcIII and TcIV) inside the tent used by the patient when harvesting forest timber, and a circular cutaneous lesion resembling a chagoma of inoculation. Treatment with benznidazole led to blood parasite clearance as confirmed by molecular tests. Altogether, our findings fitted well into the ecological scenario where deforestation and colonization of forested areas represent an important risk factor to the adaptation of P. geniculatus to human habitats, favoring vectorial transmission of CD in the Amazonian region.

BACKGROUND: Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the etiological agent of tuberculosis, has at least four ATP-Binding Cassette (ABC) transporters dedicated to carbohydrate uptake: LpqY/SugABC, UspABC, Rv2038c-41c, and UgpAEBC. LpqY/SugABC transporter is essential for M. tuberculosis survival in vivo and potentially involved in the recycling of cell wall components. The three-dimensional structures of substrate-binding proteins (SBPs) LpqY, UspC, and UgpB were described, however, questions about how these proteins interact with the cognate transporter are still being explored. Components of these transporters, such as SBPs, show high immunogenicity and could be used for the development of diagnostic and therapeutic tools. In this work, we used a phylogenetic and structural bioinformatics approach to compare the four systems, in an attempt to predict functionally important regions. RESULTS: Through the analysis of the putative orthologs of the carbohydrate ABC importers in species of Mycobacterium genus it was shown that Rv2038c-41c and UgpAEBC systems are restricted to pathogenic species. We showed that the components of the four ABC importers are phylogenetically separated into four groups defined by structural differences in regions that modulate the functional activity or the interaction with domain partners. The regulatory region in nucleotide-binding domains, the periplasmic interface in transmembrane domains and the ligand-binding pocket of the substrate-binding proteins define their substrates and segregation in different branches. The interface between transmembrane domains and nucleotide-binding domains show conservation of residues and charge. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of four ABC transporters in M. tuberculosis dedicated to uptake and transport of different carbohydrate sources, and the exclusivity of at least two of them being present only in pathogenic species of Mycobacterium genus, highlights their relevance in virulence and pathogenesis. The significant differences in the SBPs, not present in eukaryotes, and in the regulatory region of NBDs can be explored for the development of inhibitory drugs targeting the bacillus. The possible promiscuity of NBDs also contributes to a less specific and more comprehensive control approach.

Tourism is one of the fastest-growing sectors in the world with a shift from mass tourism to personalized travel. Nevertheless, it generates significant environmental impacts. The current events associated with quarantine measures generated by COVID-19 represent, however, a risk for this sector. It is hence necessary to create strategies that allow efficient decision-making for all echelons and actors for a rapid recovery. Tourists are key actors, which makes necessary to facilitate tourism trip planning according to tourists' preferences as a complex process. In this paper, we propose a novel model of tourist trip planning for heterogeneous preferences in a tourist group and selection of transport modes, in the first instance, while a second step seeks at minimizing the level of CO2 emissions. A comparison of the two models is made considering the objectives associated with individual tourist benefits and group profit equity, in contrast to the inclusion of the cost of CO2 emissions. A numerical comparison is carried out with a total of 546 data sets. Results illustrate the conflict between those objectives by generating an inverse relationship between the individual and group profit equity of tourists, in addition to individual benefit and emission minimization.

This study aimed to identify the Trypanosoma cruzi genotypes and their relationship with parasitic load in distinct geographic and ecotypic populations of Triatoma brasiliensis in two sites, including one where a Chagas disease (ChD) outbreak occurred in Rio Grande do Norte state, Brazil. Triatomine captures were performed in peridomestic and sylvatic ecotopes in two municipalities: Marcelino Vieira - affected by the outbreak; and Currais Novos - where high pressure of peridomestic triatomine infestation after insecticide spraying have been reported. The kDNA-PCR was used to select 124 T. cruzi positive triatomine samples, of which 117 were successfully genotyped by fluorescent fragment length barcoding (FFLB). Moreover, the T. cruzi load quantification was performed using a multiplex TaqMan qPCR. Our findings showed a clear ecotypic segregation between TcI and TcII harboured by T. brasiliensis (p<0.001). Although no genotypes were ecotypically exclusive, TcI was predominant in peridomestic ecotopes (86%). In general, T. brasiliensis from Rio Grande do Norte had a higher T. cruzi load varying from 3.94 to 7.66 x 106T. cruzi per insect. Additionally, TcII (median value=299,504 T. cruzi/intestine unit equivalents) had more than twice (p=0.1) the parasite load of TcI (median value=149,077 T. cruzi/intestine unit equivalents), which can be attributed to a more ancient co-evolution with T. brasiliensis. The higher prevalence of TcII in the sylvatic T. brasiliensis (70%) could be associated with a more diversified source of bloodmeals for wild insect populations. Either TcI or TcII may have been responsible for the ChD outbreak that occurred in the city of Marcelino Vieira. On the other hand, a smaller portion of T. brasiliensis was infected by TcIII (3%) in the peridomicile, in addition to T. rangeli genotype A (1%), often found in mixed infections. Our results highlight the need of understanding the patterns of T. cruzi genotype´s development and circulation in insect vectors and reservoirs as a mode of tracking situations of epidemiologic importance, as the ChD outbreak recently recorded for Northeastern Brazil.

Anastrepha ludens (Diptera: Tephritidae), is a damaging agricultural pest. Currently, the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT) is used as part of its control. The SIT consists of the mass-rearing, sterilization, and release of insects in target areas. Sterile males mate with wild females, and prevent them from laying fertile eggs. However, even if females mate with sterile males, they can then remate with a second male. If this second male is wild, then this could reduce the efficiency of the SIT by producing viable offspring. The amount of progeny produced by second males (P2 values) for A. ludens is unknown. Here, we evaluated the biological attributes, mating competitiveness, and the proportion of male paternity gained by the second male, using strains that carry fluorescent marker genes and can be potentially used to develop transgenic sexing strains. Furthermore, the transgenic strains were irradiated, to test their ability to induce sterility in females. We found that the 443-G strain had significantly higher larval survival than the 419-R strain. No significant difference was found between the two strains in their mating probability with wild females. We found P2 values between 67 and 74% for the 419-R and the 443-G strain, respectively. Second male sperm precedence only decreased slightly after 12 days, suggesting that sperm from the first and second male is not mixing with time, but rather the second male's sperm prevails. Furthermore, sterile 443-G males induced significantly higher sterility in females than sterile males from the 419-R strain. The apparent lower ability of the 443-G strain to inhibit female remating should be further investigated. Knowledge of the pre and postcopulatory performance of transgenic strains will help in understanding their potential for control.

BACKGROUND: Area-wide integrated pest management programs (AW-IPM) incorporating sterile insect technique (SIT) have been successful in suppressing populations of different fruit fly species during the last six decades. In addition, the development of genetic sexing strains (GSS) for different fruit fly species has allowed for sterile male-only releases and has significantly improved the efficacy and cost effectiveness of the SIT applications. The South American Fruit Fly Anastrepha fraterculus (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a major agricultural pest attacking several fruit commodities. This impedes international trade and has a significant negative impact on the local economies. Given the importance of sterile male-only releases, the development of a GSS for A. fraterculus would facilitate the implementation of an efficient and cost-effective SIT operational program against this insect pest species. RESULTS: For potential use in a GSS, three new morphological markers (mutants) were isolated in a laboratory strain of A. fraterculus sp. 1, including the black pupae (bp) gene located on chromosome VI. The black pupa phenotype was used as a selectable marker to develop genetic sexing strains by linking the wild type allele (bp+) to the Y-chromosome -via irradiation to induce a reciprocal Y-autosome translocation. Four GSS were established and one of them, namely GSS-89, showed the best genetic stability and the highest fertility. This strain was selected for further characterization and cytogenetic analysis. CONCLUSIONS: We herein report the development of the first genetic sexing strain of a major agricultural pest, A. fraterculus sp. 1, using as a selectable marker the black pupae genetic locus.

The sterile insect technique (SIT), used to control different species of tephritid fruit flies (Diptera: Tephritidae), is an important element in sustainable agriculture because of its low negative impact on the environment. In SIT, flies are mass produced and sterilized in the laboratory and then released in a target area. However, once released, laboratory flies may confront harass environments that would reduce their performance and consequently SIT efficiency. Selecting flies that resist stressful conditions may help to improve the efficiency of the SIT by releasing males that resist desiccation, for example, ensuring, thus, their survival in environments with low relative humidity. However, the selection process may affect the resistance of flies to the stress of sterilization, since some life history traits are affected. Here, we studied the effect of irradiation on Anastrepha ludens (Loew) (Diptera: Tephritidae) desiccation resistant flies (DR) compared with nonselected flies (NS). We measured the effect of gamma irradiation dose (0, 20, 40, 60, and 80 Gy) on sterility (males and females) and quality parameters (emergence, flight ability, survival, and male sexual performance) in A. ludens adults of the DR and NS (control) strains. Our results indicate that irradiation affected equally the sterility of adults of both strains. None of the quality parameters differed between strains. The only difference was that DR flies survived longer than control flies. Thus, flies that are resistant to desiccation can be used in the SIT without altering the current process of irradiation and packing.

Existen resultados contradictorios respecto al efecto de esta enfermedad en los índices de caries dental. El objetivo del estudio fue determinar la prevalencia de caries dental en pacientes pediátricos asmáticos con medicación inhalatoria. Población y métodos. Estudio de casos y controles cuya muestra estuvo conformada por pacientes pediátricos que acudieron al Centro Médico Naval "Cirujano Mayor Santiago Távara" de diciembre de 2014 a marzo de 2015. Se dividieron en dos grupos: el primero (casos), integrado por pacientes asmáticos que utilizaban inhaladores en su tratamiento; el segundo (controles), por pacientes sanos del mismo nosocomio. Se realizó una evaluación médica para determinar tipo, tiempo y frecuencia del tratamiento y un examen oral para determinar la prevalencia de caries dental y el índice de dientes cariados, perdidos y obturados (CPOD). Resultados. Se encontró que la prevalencia de caries dental en el grupo control fue del 34,2 %, mientras, en el grupo casos, fue del 28,3 % (p = 0,094). Con respecto al índice de caries dental, el grupo control presentó CPOD de 4,73 ± 0,32, y el grupo casos, de 3,98 ± 0,31 (p = 0,08). Sin embargo, se evidenció que, a mayor tiempo de tratamiento con los inhaladores, el índice CPOD aumentaba significativamente (p = 0,04).Conclusiones. La medicación inhalatoria no incrementa la prevalencia de caries dental en pacientes pediátricos asmáticos. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to appraise the methodological quality of published clinical practice guidelines (CPGs) of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) using AGREE II instrument for further enhancing the CAP CPG development. METHODS: We performed a systematic review of published CPGs on CAP from January 2007 to May 2019. All reviewers independently assessed each CPG using the AGREE II instrument. A standardised score was calculated for each of the six domains. RESULTS: Our search strategy identified 4125 citations but just 18 met our inclusion criteria. Agreement among reviewers was very good: 0.98. The domains that scored better were: "scope and purpose" and "clarity and presentation". Those that scored worse were "editorial independence", and "applicability". According to the AGREE II evaluation for each Guideline, the NICE, IDSA, BTS, SWAB, Korea, Consensur II, Colombian and Peruvian CPGs were the only recommended with no further modifications. In addition, ERS and SEPAR CPGs were recommended with modifications, with lower scores regarding the editorial independence and applicability. CONCLUSION: In conclusion, published CPGs for CAP management vary in quality with a need to improve the methodological and applicability rigour. This could be achieved following the standards for guidelines development and a better emphasis on how to apply CPGs recommendations in clinical practice.

Triatoma petrocchiae is the newly member of the Triatoma brasiliensis species complex. This species overlaps with T. brasiliensis in geographic and ecotypic occupation in the sylvatic habitat because both inhabit rocky outcrops in the semi-arid portion of Brazilian northeast. In this region T. brasiliensis is the most important Chagas disease vector because it constantly colonizes domiciles. In contrast, T. petrocchiae is rarely found in peri or intradomiciliary habitats - reason why little is known about this species. Therefore, Here, we present information for the first time on. the T. petrocchiae ecotopes, genetic diversity, Trypanosoma cruzi prevalence/genotyping in comparison to T. brasiliensis. We found T. brasilensis (Nâ¯=â¯223) and T. petrocchiae (Nâ¯=â¯69) in co-habitation in rocky outcrops in three Districts of Paraíba and Rio Grande do Norte states. Forty-tree T. petrocchiae insects of eleven sampling spots (composing three geographic populations) were genotyped for the mitochondrial Cyt B gene and little geographic structure was observed. Tajima's D test suggested that species is evolving toward a mutation-drift equilibrium in our collection range. Sylvatic T. petrocchiae had 4% (3/68) of infected insects by T. cruzi, whereas T. brasiliensis had 26% (59/223). Fluorescent Fragment Length Barcoding demonstrated that all three T. petrocchiae harbored TcI whereas T. brasiliensis had TcI, but also TcIII, TcII/TcVI and T. rangeli genotype A, sometimes under mixed infections. None of infected T. petrocchiae were carrying mixed infections. However, this result should be confirmed using a larger pool of infected bugs. We here presented the first documentation of T. rangeli infecting T. brasiliensis. The finding of infected T. petrocchiae calls for constant vector monitoring because the epidemiologic scenario is dynamic and sylvatic vectors are progressively found in adaptation to anthropic environments.

For many years, an area-wide fruit fly control campaign against the Mexican fruit fly, Anastrepha ludens (Loew) has been implemented in some regions of Mexico and Texas, using the sterile insect technique (SIT) as its principal component. To improve the efficiency of the SIT, a genetic sexing strain based on black pupae mutation (bp) was developed for A. ludens, namely, 'Tapachula-7' (Tap-7 genetic sexing strains [GSSs]). This strain was introduced into the AW-IPM program recently and allows male-only releases for SIT applications. Here, we report the genetic and biological characterization of a new mutation, slow larvae (sl), which was introduced to the original translocation of the Tap-7 GSS resulting in two new GSS (slow-7 and Tap/slow-7). In both GSSs, the translocated wild-type males emerge from brown pupae that develop faster than females. The females are homozygous for sl mutation in the slow-7 GSS and homozygous for sl and bp mutations in the Tap/slow-7 GSS, reaching larval maturity 2 d after most of the wild-type males, allowing the separation of most males during pupariation. The potential use of the slow-7 and Tap/slow-7 GSSs in mass rearing and large-scale population suppression programs is discussed.

BACKGROUND: Whole genome sequencing (WGS) has been proposed as a tool for diagnosing drug resistance in tuberculosis. However, reports of its effectiveness in endemic countries with important numbers of drug resistance are scarce. The goal of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of this procedure in isolates from a tuberculosis endemic region in Mexico. METHODS: WGS analysis was performed in 81 tuberculosis positive clinical isolates with a known phenotypic profile of resistance against first-line drugs (isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide and streptomycin). Mutations related to drug resistance were identified for each isolate; drug resistant genotypes were predicted and compared with the phenotypic profile. Genotypes and transmission clusters based on genetic distances were also characterized. FINDINGS: Prediction by WGS analysis of resistance against isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, pyrazinamide and streptomycin showed sensitivity values of 84%, 96%, 71%, 75% and 29%, while specificity values were 100%, 94%, 90%, 90% and 98%, respectively. Prediction of multidrug resistance showed a sensitivity of 89% and specificity of 97%. Moreover, WGS analysis revealed polymorphisms related to second-line drug resistance, enabling classification of eight and two clinical isolates as pre- and extreme drug-resistant cases, respectively. Lastly, four lineages were identified in the population (L1, L2, L3 and L4). The most frequent of these was L4, which included 90% (77) of the isolates. Six transmission clusters were identified; the most frequent was TC6, which included 13 isolates with a L4.1.1 and a predominantly multidrug-resistant condition. CONCLUSIONS: The results illustrate the utility of WGS for establishing the potential for prediction of resistance against first and second line drugs in isolates of tuberculosis from the region. They also demonstrate the feasibility of this procedure for use as a tool to support the epidemiological surveillance of drug- and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis.

BACKGROUND: Implementation of sputum Gram stain in the initial assessment of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) patients is still controversial. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the usefulness of sputum Gram stain for defining the etiologic diagnosis of CAP in adult patients. METHODS: We systematically searched the Medline, Embase, Science Direct, Scopus and LILACS databases for full-text articles. Relevant studies were reviewed by at least three investigators who extracted the data, pooled them using a random effects model, and carried out quality assessment. For each bacterium (Streptococcus pneumoniae, Haemophilus influenzae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Gram-negative bacilli), pooled sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative likelihood ratios were reported. RESULTS: After a review of 3539 abstracts, 20 articles were included in the present meta-analysis. The studies included yielded 5619 patients with CAP. Pooled sensitivity and pooled specificity of sputum Gram stain were 0.59 (95% CI, 0.56-0.62) and 0.87 (95% CI, 0.86-0.89) respectively for S. pneumoniae, 0.78 (95% CI, 0.72-0.84) and 0.96 (95% CI, 0.94-0.97) for H. influenzae, 0.72 (95% CI, 0.53-0.87) and 0.97 (95% CI, 0.95-0.99) for S. aureus, and 0.64 (95% CI, 0.49-0.77) and 0.99 (95% CI, 0.97-0.99) for Gram-negative bacilli. CONCLUSION: Sputum Gram stain test is sensitive and highly specific for identifying the main causative pathogens in adult patients with CAP. OBJETIVO: Determinar el clima organizacional existente en el CIES UNANManagua, Nicaragua, febrero 2019. METODOLOGÍA: Estudio descriptivo de corte transversal, universo constituido por 31 colaboradores administrativos, docentes y de proyecto. La fuente de información fue primaria, la muestra fue de 21 colaboradores. Se utilizó el instrumento de medición propuesto por la OPS para medir Clima Organizacional, los datos se procesaron en Microsoft Excel 2019. RESULTADOS: Se caracterizó sociolaboralmente al personal, los resultados muestran que la edad promedio se encuentra entre los 41 a 60 años esto representa 13 (72.2%), en cuanto al sexo, predominan los hombres con el 10 (56%), y 8 (44%) son mujeres, se observa que el nivel de escolaridad presenta un promedio de 50% con titulos de maestría por la experiencia y experticia en la docencia a esto se le suman los años de antiguedad en la institución con un promedio de 8 (44.5%).el 8 (44%) de los colaboradores son administrativos y 6 (33.3%) de los encuestados son docentes. Los principales resultados del estudio apuntan hacia la existencia de dificultades en las cuatro variables liderazgo, motivación, reciprocidad y participación lo que incide desfavorablemente en el clima organizacional, con un promedio general de 57%. CONCLUSIÓNES: El clima organizacional no es satisfactorio, El personal considera que las autoridades no contribuyen en la realización personal y profesional, así como no existe retribución por parte de las autoridades a sus actividades laborales además de la inexistencia del reconocimiento por el buen desempeño

BACKGROUND: Mexico is one of the most important contributors of drug and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis in Latin America; however, knowledge of the genetic diversity of drug-resistant tuberculosis isolates is limited. METHODS: In this study, the genetic structure of 112 Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains from the southeastern Mexico was determined by spoligotyping and 24-loci MIRU-VNTRs. FINDINGS: The results show eight major lineages, the most of which was T1 (24%), followed by LAM (16%) and H (15%). A total of 29 (25%) isolates were identified as orphan. The most abundant SITs were SIT53/T1 and SIT42/LAM9 with 10 isolates each and SIT50/H3 with eight isolates. Fifty-two spoligotype patterns, twenty-seven clusters and ten clonal complexes were observed, demonstrating an important genetic diversity of drug and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis isolates in circulation and transmission level of these aggravated forms of tuberculosis. Being defined as orphan or as part of an orphan cluster, was a risk factor for multidrug resistant-tuberculosis (OR 2.5, IC 1.05-5.86 and OR 3.3, IC 1-11.03, respectively). Multiple correspondence analyses showed association of some clusters and SITs with specific geographical locations. CONCLUSIONS: Our study provides one of the most detailed description of the genetic structure of drug and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis strains in southeast Mexico, establishing for the first time a baseline of the genotypes observed in resistant isolates circulating, however further studies are required to better elucidate the genetic structure of tuberculosis in region and the factors that could be participating in their dispersion.

INTRODUCTION: Pregnancy and the postpartum period are risk factors for developing biliary sludge, gallstones, and any of their complications. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence, presentation, and consequences of cholestasis during pregnancy and postpartum in a referral hospital of Baja California Sur. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, observational study that enrolled pregnant or postpartum patients diagnosed with gallstones with any presentation. RESULTS: 137 patients were included, with 22 ± 4 years of age; 33 were pregnant and 104 in the postpartum period. Only 14% of the group had a history of cholelithiasis, and overweight/obesity was observed in 66.7 and 66.3% of pregnant and postpartum patients, respectively (p = 0.94). Of pregnant patients, 33.3% presented with acute cholecystitis, a condition observed in 16.3% of the postpartum patients (p = 0.04). Pancreatitis and choledocholithiasis were slightly more common in pregnant women (21.23% vs. 19.2%; p = 0.56). There was no maternal mortality and one case of spontaneous abortion was exclusively observed. CONCLUSIONS: It is a priority to diagnose and monitor cholelithiasis in pregnant women because the acute cases observed occurred more frequently, but choledocholithiasis and pancreatitis occurred similarly in both groups.

Environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically modified (GM) crops is a process to evaluate whether the biotechnology trait(s) in a GM crop may result in increased pest potential or harm to the environment. In this analysis, two GM insect-resistant (IR) herbicide-tolerant maize hybrids (MON-89Ø34-3 × MON-88Ø17-3 and MON-89Ø34-3 × MON-ØØ6Ø3-6) and one herbicide-tolerant GM hybrid (MON-ØØ6Ø3-6) were compared with conventional maize hybrids of similar genetic backgrounds. Two sets of studies, Experimental Phase and Pilot Phase, were conducted across five ecological regions (ecoregions) in Mexico during 2009-2013, and data were subject to meta-analysis. Results from the Experimental Phase studies, which were used for ERA, indicated that the three GM hybrids were not different from conventional maize for early stand count, days-to-silking, days-to-anthesis, root lodging, stalk lodging, or final stand count. Statistically significant differences were observed for seedling vigor, ear height, plant height, grain moisture, and grain yield, particularly in the IR hybrids; however, none of these phenotypic differences are expected to contribute to a biological or ecological change that would result in an increased pest potential or ecological risk when cultivating these GM hybrids. Overall, results from the Experimental Phase studies are consistent with those from other world regions, confirming that there are no additional risks compared to conventional maize. Results from Pilot Phase studies indicated that, compared to conventional maize hybrids, no differences were detected for the agronomic and phenotypic characteristics measured on the three GM maize hybrids, with the exception of grain moisture and grain yield in the IR hybrids. Since MON-89Ø34-3 × MON-88Ø17-3 and MON-89Ø34-3 × MON-ØØ6Ø3-6 confer resistance to target insect pests, they are an alternative for farmers in Mexico to protect the crop from insect damage. Additionally, the herbicide tolerance conferred by all three GM hybrids enables more cost-effective weed management.

The structural and mechanical properties of an epitaxial graphene (EG) monolayer thermally grown on top of a 6H-SiC(0001) surface were studied by combined dynamic scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and frequency modulation atomic force microscopy (FM-AFM). Experimental STM, dynamic STM and AFM images of EG on 6H-SiC(0001) show a lattice with a 1.9 nm period corresponding to the (6 × 6) quasi-cell of the SiC surface. The corrugation amplitude of this (6 × 6) quasi-cell, measured from AFM topographies, increases with the setpoint value of the frequency shift Δf (15-20 Hz, repulsive interaction). Excitation variations map obtained simultaneously with the AFM topography shows that larger dissipation values are measured in between the topographical bumps of the (6 × 6) quasi-cell. These results demonstrate that the AFM tip deforms the graphene monolayer. During recording in dynamic STM mode, a frequency shift (Δf) map is obtained in which Δf values range from 41 to 47 Hz (repulsive interaction). As a result, we deduced that the STM tip, also, provokes local mechanical distortions of the graphene monolayer. The origin of these tip-induced distortions is discussed in terms of electronic and mechanical properties of EG on 6H-SiC(0001).

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the alcohol, and tobacco consumption and sports practice for Mexican and Spanish and its relation to sensation seeking. Methods: 309 university students participated, 154 Spanish and 155 Mexican. We used the Sensation Seeking Scale (SSS-V), the health survey Short-Form 36 (SF-36) and a lifestyle questionnaire conducted ad hoc. RESULTS: Mexican Students often have lower consumption of tobacco, alcohol and binge drinking and more frequent sport than Spanish students and receive higher scores on the SF-36. Disinhibition is a risk factor for alcohol consumption and physical inactivity and SSS-V for tobacco consumption. CONCLUSIONS: The consumption of alcohol, tobacco and physical inactivity in universities in Spain and Mexico is low. The SSS-V full scale is a predictor of tobacco consumption and dimension DES of alcohol consumption and physical inactivity.
