RESUMEN

An unidentified microfilaria sharing characteristics with Mansonella ozzardi and Onchocerca volvulus was detected in blood samples from seven human volunteers, inhabitants of a community in the border of Amazonas and Acre State. They were detected during epidemiological studies carried out in some communities along Antimary, Acre, and Purus Rivers in the Brazilian Amazon. The most striking difference was presented in the shape of the cephalic space from this microfilaria which was different from those of M. ozzardi and with similarities to O. volvulus in this region, but no remarkable differences were observed at the caudal region. More accurate studies are being carried out in order to provide additional data and supporting evidences before establishment of a new species can be done.

RESUMEN

This paper describes five additional Brazilian human cases of polycystic hydatid disease due to Echinococcus vogeli, reviews the previous cases reported in Brazil, including one report of E. oligarthus (20 in total), and some epidemiological aspects of this disease which is no longer a curiosity but rather a problem that is not medically easy to handle. Its presence should be expected in any rural area of the New World where humans have not eliminated wild felids/canids, bush dogs, pacas, agoutis and other wild rodents.

Revisamos as posiçöes taxonômicas de três espécies de simulídeos da Amazônia, Simulium guianense Wise, S. oyapockense Flock & Abonnenc e S. yarzabali Ramirez Perez. Sinonimizamos S. cuasisanguineum Ramires Perez, Yarzabal & Peterson com S. oyapockense, revalidamos S. yarzabali que estava em sinonímia com S. incrustatum. Discutimos os papéis destas três espécies na transmissäo de oncocercose e mansonelose humana na Amazônia
