RESUMEN

Guava (Psidium guajava L.) is a semi-domesticated fruit tree of moderate importance in the Neotropics, utilized for millennia due to its nutritional and medicinal benefits, but its origin of domestication remains unknown. In this study, we examine genetic diversity and population structure in 215 plants from 11 countries in Mesoamerica, the Andes, and Amazonia using 25 nuclear microsatellite loci to propose an origin of domestication. Genetic analyses reveal one gene pool in Mesoamerica (Mexico) and four in South America (Brazilian Amazonia, Peruvian Amazonia and Andes, and Colombia), indicating greater differentiation among localities, possibly due to isolation between guava populations, particularly in the Amazonian and Andean regions. Moreover, Mesoamerican populations show high genetic diversity, with moderate genetic structure due to gene flow from northern South American populations. Dispersal scenarios suggest that Brazilian Amazonia is the probable origin of guava domestication, spreading from there to the Peruvian Andes, northern South America, Central America, and Mexico. These findings present the first evidence of guava domestication in the Americas, contributing to a deeper understanding of its evolutionary history.

Background: Genomic resource development for non-model organisms is rapidly progressing, seeking to uncover molecular mechanisms and evolutionary adaptations enabling thriving in diverse environments. Limited genomic data for bat species hinder insights into their evolutionary processes, particularly within the diverse Myotis genus of the Vespertilionidae family. In Mexico, 15 Myotis species exist, with three-M. vivesi, M. findleyi, and M. planiceps-being endemic and of conservation concern. Methods: We obtained samples of Myotis vivesi, M. findleyi, and M. planiceps for genomic analysis. Each of three genomic DNA was extracted, sequenced, and assembled. The scaffolding was carried out utilizing the M. yumanensis genome via a genome-referenced approach within the ntJoin program. GapCloser was employed to fill gaps. Repeat elements were characterized, and gene prediction was done via ab initio and homology methods with MAKER pipeline. Functional annotation involved InterproScan, BLASTp, and KEGG. Non-coding RNAs were annotated with INFERNAL, and tRNAscan-SE. Orthologous genes were clustered using Orthofinder, and a phylogenomic tree was reconstructed using IQ-TREE. Results: We present genome assemblies of these endemic species using Illumina NovaSeq 6000, each exceeding 2.0 Gb, with over 90% representing single-copy genes according to BUSCO analyses. Transposable elements, including LINEs and SINEs, constitute over 30% of each genome. Helitrons, consistent with Vespertilionids, were identified. Values around 20,000 genes from each of the three assemblies were derived from gene annotation and their correlation with specific functions. Comparative analysis of orthologs among eight Myotis species revealed 20,820 groups, with 4,789 being single copy orthogroups. Non-coding RNA elements were annotated. Phylogenomic tree analysis supported evolutionary chiropterans' relationships. These resources contribute significantly to understanding gene evolution, diversification patterns, and aiding conservation efforts for these endangered bat species.

Brucellosis is an infection widely distributed around the world, and in some countries it is considered a public health problem. Brucellosis causes insidious symptoms that make it difficult to diagnose. Infection can also trigger chronic pain and neuropsychiatric complications. Antibiotics are not always effective to eradicate infection, contributing to chronicity. We aimed to investigate the effects of antibiotic treatment on proinflammatory cytokines, neurotransmitters, corticosterone, and behavior in a murine model of infecrion of B. abortus strain 2308. Four study groups were created: (a) control; (b) antibiotic control; (c) infected with B. abortus 2308; and (d) infected and treated with rifampicin and doxycycline. We determined B. abortus 2308 colony-forming units (CFUs), the count of dendritic cells, and macrophages in the spleen; serum levels of cytokines and corticosterone; levels of serotonin, dopamine, epinephrine, and norepinephrine in the brain; and equilibrium, physical strength, anxiety, and hopelessness tests. The infected and treated mice group was compared with the control and infected mice to assess whether treatment is sufficient to recover neuroimmunoendocrine parameters. Our results showed that despite the treatment of brucellosis with rifampicin and doxycycline, antibiotic-treated mice showed a persistence of B. abortus 2308 CFUs, an increased count in macrophage number, and higher circulating levels of corticosterone. Furthermore, the levels of IL-12, IL-6, and TNF-α remained higher. We found a decrease in muscular strength and equilibrium concomitant to changes in neurotransmitters in the hippocampus, cerebellum, and frontal cortex. Our data suggest that the remaining bacterial load after antibiotic administration favors inflammatory, neurochemical, and behavioral alterations, partly explaining the widespread and paradoxical symptomatology experienced by patients with chronic brucellosis.

Currently, the responsible use of antimicrobials in pigs has allowed the continuous development of alternatives to these antimicrobials. In this study, we describe the impact of treatments with two probiotics, one based on live Saccharomyces cerevisiae (S. cerevisiae) and another based on fragmented S. cerevisiae (beta-glucans), that were administered to piglets at birth and at prechallenge with Mycoplasma hyopneumoniae. Thirty-two pigs were divided into four groups of eight animals each. The animals had free access to water and food. The groups were as follows: Group A, untreated negative control; Group B, inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae positive control; Group C, first treated with disintegrated S. cerevisiae (disintegrated Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae; and Group D, treated with live S. cerevisiae yeast (live Sc) and inoculated by nebulization with M. hyopneumoniae. In a previous study, we found that on Days 1 and 21 of blood sampling, nine proinflammatory cytokines were secreted, and an increase in their secretion occurred for only five of them: TNF-α, INF-α, INF-γ, IL-10, and IL-12 p40. The results of the clinical evolution, the degree of pneumonic lesions, and the productive parameters of treated Groups C and D suggest that S. cerevisiae has an immunomodulatory effect in chronic proliferative M. hyopneumoniae pneumonia characterized by delayed hypersensitivity, which depends on the alteration or modulation of the respiratory immune response. The data presented in this study showed that S. cerevisiae contributed to the innate resistance of infected pigs.

RESUMEN

Trusting relationships between veterinary professionals and clients are important for the well-being of people and the ultimate health of their animals. Yet, microaggressions pose a threat to these relationships. Defined as slights or indignities wielded against people with marginalized identities, microaggressions inflict a unique form of harm that reaffirms negative stereotypes enmeshed in systems of racism, sexism, classism, and beyond. In this article, we explore how microaggressions work and how they are applicable in veterinary settings. We also offer initial suggestions for veterinary professionals and educators to better understand and counteract their damage in the profession.

Cucurbita ficifolia is a squash grown from Mexico to Bolivia. Its ancestor is unknown, but it has limited compatibility with wild xerophytic Cucurbita from Mexico's highlands. We assembled the reference genome of C. ficifolia and assessed the genetic diversity and historical demography of the crop in Mexico with 2524 nuclear single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We also evaluated the gene flow between C. ficifolia and xerophytic taxa with 6292 nuclear and 440 plastome SNPs from 142 individuals sampled in 58 sites across their area of sympatry. Demographic modelling of C. ficifolia supports an eight-fold decrease in effective population size at about 2409 generations ago (95% CI = 464-12,393), whereas plastome SNPs support the expansion of maternal lineages ca. 1906-3635 years ago. Our results suggest a recent spread of C. ficifolia in Mexico, with high genetic diversity (π = 0.225, FST = 0.074) and inbreeding (FIS = 0.233). Coalescent models suggest low rates of gene flow with C. radicans and C. pedatifolia, whereas ABBA-BABA tests did not detect significant gene flow with wild taxa. Despite the ecogeographic proximity of C. ficifolia and its relatives, this crop persists as a highly isolated lineage of puzzling origin.

In Mexico, the BA.4 and BA.5 Omicron variants dominated the fifth epidemic wave (summer 2022), superseding BA.2, which had circulated during the inter-wave period. The present study uses genome sequencing and statistical and phylogenetic analyses to examine these variants' abundance, distribution, and genetic diversity in Mexico from April to August 2022. Over 35 % of the sequenced genomes in this period corresponded to the BA.2 variant, 8 % to the BA.4 and 56 % to the BA.5 variant. Multiple subvariants were identified, but the most abundant, BA.2.9, BA.2.12.1, BA.5.1, BA.5.2, BA.5.2.1 and BA.4.1, circulated across the entire country, not forming geographical clusters. Contrastingly, other subvariants exhibited a geographically restricted distribution, most notably in the Southeast region, which showed a distinct subvariant dynamic. This study supports previous results showing that this region may be a significant entry point and contributed to introducing and evolving novel variants in Mexico. Furthermore, a differential distribution was observed for certain subvariants among specific States through time, which may have contributed to the overall increased diversity observed during this wave compared to the previous ones. This study highlights the importance of sustaining genomic surveillance to identify novel variants that may impact public health.

Brucellosis infection causes non-specific symptoms such as fever, chills, sweating, headaches, myalgia, arthralgia, anorexia, fatigue, and mood disorders. In mouse models, it has been associated with increased levels of IL-6, TNF-α, and IFN-γ, a decrease in serotonin and dopamine levels within the hippocampus, induced loss of muscle strength and equilibrium, and increased anxiety and hopelessness. Imipramine (ImiP), a tricyclic antidepressant, is used to alleviate neuropathic pain. This study evaluated the effects of ImiP on Balb/c mice infected with Brucella abortus 2308 (Ba) at 14- and 28-days post-infection. Serum levels of six cytokines (IFN-γ, IL-6, TNF-α, IL-12, MCP-1. and IL-10) were assessed by FACS, while the number of bacteria in the spleen was measured via CFU. Serotonin levels in the hippocampus were analyzed via HPLC, and behavioral tests were conducted to assess strength, equilibrium, and mood. Our results showed that mice infected with Brucella abortus 2308 and treated with ImiP for six days (Im6Ba14) had significantly different outcomes compared to infected mice (Ba14) at day 14 post-infection. The mood was enhanced in the forced swimming test (FST) (p < 0.01), tail suspension test (TST) (p < 0.0001), and open-field test (p < 0.0001). Additionally, there was an increase in serotonin levels in the hippocampus (p < 0.001). Furthermore, there was an improvement in equilibrium (p < 0.0001) and muscle strength (p < 0.01). Lastly, there was a decrease in IL-6 levels (p < 0.05) and CFU count in the spleen (p < 0.0001). At 28 days, infected mice that received ImiP for 20 days (Im20Ba28) showed preservation of positive effects compared to infected mice (Ba28). These effects include the following: (1) improved FST (p < 0.0001) and TST (p < 0.0001); (2) better equilibrium (p < 0.0001) and muscle strength (p < 0.0001); (3) decreased IL-6 levels (p < 0.05); and (4) reduced CFU count in the spleen (p < 0.0001). These findings suggest the potential for ImiP to be used as an adjuvant treatment for the symptoms of brucellosis, which requires future studies.

Establecer la capacidad discriminativa del puntaje de riesgo finlandés para disglucemia en usuarios de una unidad de medicina familiar localizada en zona conurbana del Estado de Guerrero, México. Material y métodos: Realizamos un estudio transversal de marzo a diciembre del 2021 en una Unidad de Medicina Familiar. Previo consentimiento informado aplicamos a 200 personas de 20 a 60 años, el puntaje de riesgo finlandés para detección de disglucemia, obtuvimos medidas somatométricas y cifras de glucosa plasmática en ayuno. Estimamos sensibilidad, especificidad, valor predictivo positivo y negativo, razón de verosimilitud positiva y negativa, y calculamos el área bajo la curva (AUC) para estimar la capacidad discriminativa del puntaje de riesgo, donde la prueba de referencia fue la glucosa en ayuno. Realizamos análisis bivariado para identificar factores asociados a disglucemia, obteniendo Odds Ratio (OR), e intervalos de confianza del 95 % (IC95%). La ocurrencia de disglucemia fue de 26.5 % (53/200). El AUC de la curva ROC del puntaje finlandés para disglucemia fue de 0.65 (IC95% 0.57-0.74). Los factores asociados a diabetes fueron ≥40 años (OR 2.1; IC95% 1.1-3.9), índice de masa corporal ≥25 Kg/m2 (OR 2.8; IC95% 1.2-6.7) y padecer hipertensión arterial (OR 2.2; IC95% 1.1-4.4). El FINDRISC demostró por AUC ser una mala herramienta para detectar personas en riesgo de padecer disglucemia, en población adscrita a unidad médica conurbana.


To establish the discriminative capacity of the Finnish risk score for dysglycemia in users of a family medicine unit located in the suburbs of the State of Guerrero, Mexico. We conducted a cross-sectional study from March to December 2021 in a Family Medicine Unit. With prior informed consent, we applied the Finnish risk score for the detection of dysglycemia to 200 people between the ages of 20 and 60, we obtained somatometric measurements and fasting plasma glucose figures. We estimated sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value, positive and negative likelihood ratio, and calculated the area under the curve (AUC) to estimate the discriminative ability of the risk score, where the reference test was fasting glucose. We performed bivariate analysis to identify factors associated with dysglycemia, obtaining Odds Ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CI). Result: The occurrence of dysglycemia was 26.5% (53/200). The AUC of the ROC curve of the Finnish score for dysglycemia was 0.65 (95%CI 0.57-0.74). The factors associated with diabetes were ≥40 years (OR 2.1; 95%CI 1.1-3.9), body mass index ≥25 Kg/m2 (OR 2.8; 95%CI 1.2-6.7) and suffering from arterial hypertension (OR 2.2; 95%CI 1.1 -4.4). The FINDRISC was shown by AUC to be a poor tool for detecting people at risk of suffering from dysglycemia, in a population attached to a suburban medical unit

Despite multiple conservation efforts of the Mexican government, the leatherback turtle is at serious risk of extinction. In this study, we investigated the possible presence of a genetic bottleneck that could prevent the recovery of this species and compared these findings with those of the olive ridley turtle, which is in true recovery. Our results confirmed that a demographic change occurred in the past and the presence of two different leatherback turtle lineages that diverged approximately 13.5 million years ago. Local ecological knowledge (LEK) also described the presence of these two lineages and warned that one is at higher risk of extinction than the other. Genetic analysis confirmed 124 mutations between the two lineages, and much lower genetic diversity in one lineage than the other. Our study highlights and substantiates the power of mixing LEK, environmental history, and genetics to better understand conservation challenges of highly threatened species such as the leatherback turtle. Moreover, we report a new lineage of the leatherback turtle which may represent a distinct species. Future studies should focus on morphological, ecological, biogeographical, evolutionary and conservation perspectives for the analysis of the new lineage.

Anti-cytokine autoantibodies (ACAA) have been reported to be an important cause of secondary immunodeficiencies. High titers of neutralizing autoantibodies may cause susceptibility to different life-threatening infectious diseases. For example, neutralizing autoantibodies against IFNg have been reported to be correlated with susceptibility to mycobacterial infections and intracellular fungal pathogens. Autoantibodies against IL-6 were detected in patients with subcutaneous abscesses and recurrent staphylococcal cellulitis; on the other hand, patients with cryptococcosis, nocardiosis, and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis were positive for autoantibodies to GM-CSF. A relationship has also been established between autoantibodies against IL-17 and IL-22 and chronic mucosal Candida infections, which have been identified in patients with APECED or thymoma. Autoantibodies against type-I IFN have been recently reported during the onset of acute COVID-19. These ACAAs resemble genetic defects in cytokines or their signaling pathways. Therefore, they may be considered to be primary immunodeficiencies phenocopies. Consequently, the detection of ACAA could be important in the diagnosis of patients, particularly in the case of late-onset diseases, in order to decide appropriate treatments. This review presents an overview of current understanding of ACAA-associated secondary immunodeficiencies.

Debido a la carga vocal a la que están expuestos los profesionales de la voz, como los profesores, son frecuentes los trastornos de voz y mal uso vocal en este grupo, lo que hace necesario poder contar con instrumentos de pesquisa rápidos y sencillos para un diagnóstico precoz de sintomatología vocal. El objetivo del presente estudio es realizar una adaptación y validación preliminar de la pauta "Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTD)" al idioma español chileno en profesores. Se comenzó con la traducción al español del instrumento original por parte de dos expertos nativos y luego la retro-traducción por dos expertos en idioma inglés para determinar concordancias y discrepancias. Luego se continuó con la validación de apariencia y contenido realizada por valoración de grupo de expertos compuesto por dos metodólogos y cinco fonoaudiólogos con experiencia en el área vocal. La validez de criterio se obtuvo mediante la correlación entre la escala en estudio y el Voice Handicap Index en su versión validada al español como prueba gold-standard, para lo cual se aplicó en una muestra de 31 docentes. La validación de la escala VTD es fiable y deja a disposición de los fonoaudiólogos una herramienta sencilla y comprensible para el entendimiento del impacto generado en personas con disfonía, particularmente, en profesionales de la voz como los profesores.


Due to the vocal load to which voice professionals such as teachers are exposed, voice disorders and vocal misuse are frequently found in this group. This makes it necessary to have quick and simple assessment instruments that allow early detection of vocal symptoms. The objective of this study was to adapt the "Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale (VTD)" to Chilean Spanish and carry out a preliminary validation of this protocol on teachers. First, the original instrument was translated toSpanish by two native speakers, and then back-translated by two English experts, in order to determine the presence of agreements and discrepancies. Subsequently, a group of experts made up of two methodologists and five speech therapists with experience in the voice field performed an appearance and content validation. Criterion validity was obtained through the correlation between the Vocal Tract Discomfort Scale and the Spanish-validated version of the Voice Handicap Index as a gold-standard test, for which the first was appliedto a sample of 31 teachers. The validation of the VTD scale is reliable and provides speech therapists with a simple and understandable tool that allows them to comprehend the impact of dysphonia on people, particularly on voice professionals such as teachers.

The recent emergence of the pathogen Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) is associated with rapid population declines of salamanders in Europe and its arrival to new areas could cause dramatic negative effects on other amphibian populations and species. Amphibian species, present in areas with high amphibian diversity such as Mexico, could be highly threatened due to the arrival of Bsal, particularly salamander species which are more vulnerable to chytridiomycosis caused by this pathogen. Thus, immediate surveillance is needed as a strategy to efficiently contend with this emerging infectious disease. In this study, we analyzed 490 wild and captive amphibians from 48 species across 76 sites in the North, Central, and South of Mexico to evaluate the presence of Bsal. Amphibians were sampled in sites with variable degrees of amphibian richness and suitability for Bsal according to previous studies. From the 76 sampling sites, 10 of them were located in areas with high amphibian richness and potential moderate to high Bsal habitat suitability. We did not detect Bsal in any of the samples, and no signs of the disease were observed in any individual at the time of sampling. Our results suggest that Bsal has not yet arrived at the sampled sites or could be at low prevalence within populations with low occurrence probability. This is the first study that evaluates the presence of Bsal in different regions and amphibian species in Mexico, which is the second most diverse country in salamander species in the world. We highlight the risk and the importance of continuing surveillance of Bsal in Mexico and discuss control strategies to avoid the introduction and spread of Bsal in the country.

The most recent glacial cycles of the Pleistocene affected the distribution, population sizes, and levels of genetic structure of temperate-forest species in the main Mexican mountain systems. Our objective was to investigate the effects these cycles had on the genetic structure and distribution of a dominant species of the "mexical" vegetation across North and Central America. We studied the genetic diversity of Juniperus deppeana, a conifer distributed from the Southwestern United States to the highlands of Central America. We combined information of one plastid marker and two nuclear markers to infer phylogeographic structure, genetic diversity and demographic changes. We also characterized the climatic niche for each variety to infer the plausible area of suitability during past climatic conditions and to evaluate climatic niche discontinuities along with the species distribution. We found a marked phylogeographic structure separating the populations North and South of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, with populations to the South of this barrier forming a distinct genetic cluster corresponding to Juniperus deppeana var. gamboana. We also found signals of population expansion in the Northern genetic cluster. Ecological niche modeling results confirmed climatic niche differences and discontinuities among J. deppeana varieties and heterogeneous responses to climatic oscillations. Overall, J. deppeana's genetic diversity has been marked by distribution shifts, population growth and secondary contact the North, and in situ permanence in the South since the last interglacial to the present. High genetic variation suggests a wide and climatically diverse distribution during climatic oscillations. We detected the existence of two main genetic clusters, supporting previous proposals that Juniperus deppeana and Juniperus gamboana may be considered two separate species.

Resumen La bioética ha sido agregada formalmente, desde 2008, a la malla curricular de la carrera de Odontología en el Ecuador. También se han creado documentos que rigen el accionar ético del odontólogo frente a distintos dilemas que se pueden presentar durante su actividad clínica. Esta investigación busca describir el nivel del conocimiento y la aplicación de los principios bioéticos en los profesionales de salud oral. Se utilizó un método de investigación cuantitativo, descriptivo y transversal, mediante una encuesta estructurada, aplicada a estudiantes de posgrado en el área odontológica. Los datos fueron procesados y analizados de forma descriptiva y correlacional. Los resultados obtenidos, resaltaron la presencia de cinco niveles de conocimiento sobre principios bioéticos. Entre estos, en los grupos de mayor porcentaje de conocimiento sobre los principios bioéticos se destacó la aplicación del principio de no maleficencia en su práctica clínica. Se reveló desconocimiento sobre la teoría: muchos desconocen los principios bioéticos básicos del correcto accionar del profesional de salud oral. Sin embargo, se ha demostrado un creciente cambio con respecto a la aplicación de estos principios.


Abstract Bioethics has been formally added, since 2008, to the curricula of dentistry courses in Ecuador. Documents have also been created that govern the ethical actions of the dentist in the face of different dilemmas that may arise during their clinical activity. This research seeks to describe the level of knowledge and application of bioethical principles in oral health professionals. A quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional research method was used, by means of a structured survey, applied to postgraduate students in the dental area. The data were processed and analyzed in a descriptive and correlational manner. The results obtained highlighted the presence of five levels of knowledge of bioethical principles. Among these, in the groups with the highest percentage of knowledge about bioethical principles, the application of the principle of non-maleficence in their clinical practice was highlighted. Lack of knowledge about the theory was revealed: many are unaware of the basic bioethical principles of the correct action of the oral health professional. However, a growing change has been demonstrated with regard to the application of these principles.


Resumo A bioética tem sido formalmente acrescentada ao currículo dos cursos de odontologia no Equador desde 2008. Também foram criados documentos para reger as ações éticas dos dentistas quando confrontados com diferentes dilemas que podem surgir durante sua atividade clínica. Esta pesquisa procura descrever o nível de conhecimento e aplicação dos princípios bioéticos nos profissionais de saúde bucal. Foi utilizado um método de pesquisa quantitativa, descritiva e transversal, por meio de uma pesquisa estruturada aplicada a estudantes pós-graduados na área odontológica. Os dados foram processados e analisados de forma descritiva e correlacional. Os resultados obtidos destacaram a presença de cinco níveis de conhecimento dos princípios bioéticos. Entre estes, nos grupos com maior porcentagem de conhecimento de princípios bioéticos, foi destacada a aplicação do princípio de não maleficência na prática clínica. A ignorância da teoria foi revelada: muitos desconhecem os princípios básicos de bioética da ação correta do profissional de saúde oral. No entanto, uma mudança crescente tem sido demonstrada com relação à aplicação destes princípios.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of urinary complications in transplantation is 2% to 20%, which can be decreased with the use of a double-J catheter. The objective of this study was to determine the association between the use of the catheter and the probability of urinary tract infection (UTI). METHODS: We studied a retrospective cohort of 1038 patients divided into 2 groups: those treated with vs without a double-J catheter. Perioperative factors related to catheter use were analyzed. Second, whether the use of the catheter was associated with fewer other urinary complications was analyzed. RESULTS: Of the whole sample, 72 patients were eliminated from the study, and 358 (37%) received a double-J catheter. UTIs occurred in 190 patients (19.6%), of whom a greater proportion received a catheter: 88 of 358 (24.6%) vs 102 of 608 (16.8%) (odds ratio, 1.61; 95% confidence interval, 1.17-2.22; P = .003). CONCLUSIONS: The placement of a double-J catheter during transplant is associated with a higher proportion of UTIs, increasing their severity and the cost of care, without having a clear effect on other types of urinary complications.

Epigenetic changes have been shown to be associated with both aging process and aging-related diseases. There is evidence regarding the benefits of physical activity on the functionality, cognition, and quality of life of institutionalized older adults, however, the molecular mechanisms involved are not elucidated. The purpose of this pilot study was to investigate the effects of a multimodal exercise intervention on functional outcomes, cognitive performance, quality of life (QOL), epigenetic markers and brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels among institutionalized older adult individuals. Participants (n = 8) without dementia who were aged 73.38 ± 11.28 years and predominantly female (87.5%) were included in this quasi-experimental pilot study. A multimodal exercise protocol (cardiovascular capacity, strength, balance/agility and flexibility, perception and cognition) consisted of twice weekly sessions (60 minutes each) over 8 weeks. Balance (Berg Scale), mobility (Timed Up and Go test), functional capacity (Six-Minute Walk test), cognitive function (Mini-Mental State Examination) and QOL (the World Health Organization Quality of Life-BREF Scale questionnaire) were evaluated before and after the intervention. Blood sample (15 mL) was also collected before and after intervention for analysis of biomarkers global histone H3 acetylation and brain-derived neurotrophic factor levels. Significant improvements were observed in cognitive function, balance, mobility, functional capacity and QOL after the intervention. In addition, a tendency toward an increase in global histone H3 acetylation levels was observed, while brain-derived neurotrophic factor level remained unchanged. This study provided evidence that an 8-week multimodal exercise protocol has a significant effect on ameliorating functional outcomes and QOL in institutionalized older adult individuals. In addition, it was also able to promote cognitive improvement, which seems to be partially related to histone hyperacetylation status. With more than 200 species, the genus Agave is one of the most interesting and complex groups of plants in the world, considering for instance its great diversity and adaptations. The adaptations include the production of a single, massive inflorescence (the largest among plants) where after growing for many years, sometimes more than 30, the rosette dies shortly afterward, and the remarkable coevolution with their main pollinators, nectarivorous bats, in particular of the genus Leptonycteris. The physiological adaptations of Agave species include a photosynthetic metabolism that allows efficient use of water and a large degree of succulence, helping to store water and resources for their massive flowering event. Ecologically, the agaves are keystone species on which numerous animal species depend for their subsistence due to the large amounts of pollen and nectar they produce, that support many pollinators, including bats, perching birds, hummingbirds, moths, and bees. Moreover, in many regions of Mexico and in the southwestern United States, agaves are dominant species. We describe the contributions of H. S. Gentry to the understanding of agaves and review recent advances on the study of the ecology and evolution of the genus. We analyze the present and inferred past distribution patterns of different species in the genus, describing differences in their climatic niche and adaptations to dry conditions. We interpret these patterns using molecular clock data and phylogenetic analyses and information of their coevolving pollinators and from phylogeographic, morphological, and ecological studies and discuss the prospects for their future conservation and management.

Contamination of natural water sources is one of the main health problems worldwide, which could be caused by chemicals, metals, or microbial agents. This study aimed to analyze the quality of 18 rivers located in Quito, the capital province of Pichincha, Ecuador, through physico-chemical and microbial parameters. The E. coli and total coliforms assessments were performed by a counting procedure in growth media. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was realized to detect several microbial genera, as well as Candida albicans, two parasites (Cryptosporidium and Giardia spp.) and E. coli pathotypes: enterohemorrhagic E. coli (EHEC), enteroaggregative E. coli (EAEC), enteroinvasive E. coli (EIEC) and enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). Additionally, physico-chemical parameters and major and trace metals were analyzed in each surface water sample. Our results demonstrated that most of the rivers analyzed do not comply with the microbial, physico-chemical, and metal requirements established by the Ecuadorian legislation. In terms of microbial pollution, the most polluted rivers were Monjas, Machángara, Pisque, and Pita Rivers. Furthermore, three out of four analyzed E. coli pathotypes (EIEC, EHEC, and EAEC) were detected in certain rivers, specifically: Monjas River showed the presence of EIEC and EHEC; in the Machángara River, EAEC and EIEC were detected; and finally, EIEC was present in the Guayllabamba River. Several physico-chemical parameters, such as pH, CODtotal, and TSS values, were higher than the Ecuadorian guidelines in 11, 28, and 28% of the rivers, respectively. Regarding heavy metals, Zn, Cu, Ni, Pb, Cd, and Mn surpassed the established values in 94, 89, 61, 22, 22, and 17% of the rivers, respectively. Machangara River was the only one that registered higher Cr concentrations than the national guidelines. The values of Al and Fe were above the recommended values in 83 and 72% of the rivers. Overall, based on the physical-chemical and microbiological parameters the most contaminated rivers were Machángara and Monjas. This study revealed severe contaminations in Ecuadorean Rivers; further studies should evaluate the sources of contamination and their impact on public health.
