Quality of Life and Well-Being for Children and Youth With Special Health Care Needs and their Families: A Vision for the Future.

OBJECTIVES: To fulfill the promise of a life of dignity, autonomy, and independence for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families, greater value must be assigned to meaningful outcomes, such as quality of life and well-being. METHODS: Despite decades of research, programs, and measurements addressing quality of life and well-being for CYSHCN and their families, there still is no consensus on how to measure, implement, or achieve them. RESULTS: As the US health care system strives to reach the health care goals of safe, efficient, effective, equitable, timely, and patient-centered care, youth and families must be equal partners at all levels of the health care system-from clinical decision making to designing and implementing programs and policies. CONCLUSIONS: The health care system must systematically measure the priorities of CYSHCN and their families. It also must incorporate data on quality of life and well-being when developing services, supports, and systems that help CYSHCN and their families to flourish rather than hindering them.

COVID-19 Pandemic-Related Impacts on Newborn Screening Public Health Surveillance.

Newborn screening (NBS) is an essential public health service that performs screening to identify those newborns at increased risk for a panel of disorders, most of which are genetic. The goal of screening is to link those newborns at the highest risk to timely intervention and potentially life-saving treatment. The global COVID-19 pandemic led to disruptions within the United States public health system, revealing implications for the continuity of newborn screening laboratories and follow-up operations. The impacts of COVID-19 across different states at various time points meant that NBS programs impacted by the pandemic later could benefit from the immediate experiences of the earlier impacted programs. This article will review the collection, analysis, and dissemination of information during the COVID-19 pandemic facilitated by a national, centralized technical assistance and resource center for NBS programs.

Likely Impact of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Newborn Hearing Screening and Follow-up Services in the United States in 2020.

This perspective aims to highlight aspects of the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) newborn hearing screening and follow-up processes that were impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and considers factors that likely impacted follow-up after failing newborn hearing screening among infants born in the United States during 2020. Efforts to minimize the potential impact of missed or delayed identification of hearing loss in infants and young children will also be discussed to help guide future program improvement activities.
