RESUMEN

In this study, the calcaneus and talus bones of 20 male and female adult Simmental and Angus cattle were used. The age and sex of these animals were recorded before slaughter, and carcass weights were taken after slaughter. Calcaneus and talus morphometric measurements were used to obtain multipliers that allow the estimation of the carcass weight. These multipliers were found to be mean values of 3.346 and 4.642, respectively. Thus, multipliers were obtained that can be used in the evaluation of chronological differences in archaeological cattle size and consequently carcass weight. LSM (Least Square Means) analysis of calcaneus and talus GL values revealed the effect of sex but not of breed. Proportional factors were obtained for calcaneus and talus pairings and associated bone size (GL) estimates.

To date, little is known about the biological and cultural status of Iron Age dogs in Anatolia. Here, we present a zooarchaeological study of an assemblage of 143 Iron Age dog bones, including two dog skeletons, unearthed from the 2016 and 2017 salvage excavations at Alaybeyi Höyük, Eastern Anatolia. At least eight adults and one juvenile individual, along with a large number of miscellaneous specimens, were identified. The morphological status of the Alaybeyi dogs were primarily compared to previously published Iron Age dogs from Yoncatepe in Eastern Anatolia, and with the average mean of 18 modern dog breeds. Unlike in other Eastern Anatolian Iron Age sites, butcher marks were observed in some specimens, indicating at least occasional cynophagy at the site. Noticeable pathologies were found in about 5% of the sample, particularly pathologies of the oral cavity and dentitions, suggesting that some of the dogs at Alaybeyi Höyük might have been undernourished, had to live on solid food, and probably injured by humans. The results of this study reflect both the morphological and biological status of Alaybeyi dogs, as well as the Alaybeyi people's attitudes toward dogs, adding vital information to the very limited archaeological knowledge of dogs in Anatolia.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate both the possible changes induced by acute alcohol intake on prostate tissue at the ultrastructural level and its effect on serum prostate-specific-antigen (PSA)-like protein levels in rats. MATERIALS AND METHODS: 44 male Wistar rats were included in the study in four separate groups; 7 treatment and 4 control animals were selected for each group. The treatment group received 40% ethanol (6 g/kg) while the control group was injected with the same dose of intraperitoneal isotonic saline. The first group was sacrificed after 3 h, the second group after 24 h, the third group after 72 h and the fourth group on day 7. Samples were examined by light and Jeol-100 electron microscope. Total serum PSA-like protein levels were determined by a Tosoh immunoenzymometric analyzer AIA 600. RESULTS: In groups 1-3, electron microscopy showed dilatations in the endoplasmic reticulum cisternae of prostatic acinar cells, disarrangements in apparent Golgi complex and apertures belonging to the basal labyrinth. It was also observed that there was a mass of debris cells inside the acinar lumen, and the secretory epithelium was detached from the basal membrane in some places. No pathology was found in group 4 by light and electron microscopy. In group 1, significant levels of increased serum total PSA-like protein were found compared to controls and other treatment groups (p = 0.006). CONCLUSIONS: The fundamental effect of acute alcohol intake on prostate tissue was observed in intermediate stages participating in the exocrine secretion process in the cellular organelles. At the same time, this influences the levels of serum PSA-like protein.
