RESUMEN

Some frog species have a unique skeletal element, referred to as the intercalary element (IE), in the joints between the terminal and subterminal phalanges of all digits. IEs are composed of cartilage or connective tissue and have a markedly differ shape than the phalanges. IEs are highly related to the arboreal lifestyle and toe pads. The IE is found only in neobatrachian frogs among anurans, suggesting that it is a novelty of Neobatrachia. IEs are widely distributed among multiple neobatrachian lineages and are found in the suborders Hyloides and Ranoides (the two major clades in Neobatrachia). However, it is unclear whether the IEs found in multiple linages resulted from convergent evolution. Therefore, in this study, we aimed to examine how similar or different the developmental trajectories of the IEs are between Hyloides and Ranoides. To that end, we compared the osteological and histological developmental processes of the IEs of the hyloid frog Dryophytes japonicus and the ranoid frog Zhangixalus schlegelii. Both species shared the same IE-initiation site and level of tissue differentiation around the IE when it began to form in tadpoles, although the IE developments initiated at different stages which were determined by external criteria. These results suggest that similar mechanisms drive IE formation in the digits of both species, supporting the hypothesis that the IEs did not evolve convergently.

RESUMEN

Venous thrombophlebitis is an uncommon cause of fever and lower abdominal pain during the early postpartum period. It mostly occurs in the right ovarian vein, and computed tomography (CT) is useful for diagnosis. We present a case of thrombophlebitis of the renal capsular vein. A 27-year-old postpartum woman presented with right lower abdominal pain and fever unresponsive to antibiotics. Contrast CT showed a ring-enhancing mass in the right retroperitoneum, which was distinct from the right ovarian vein. Exploratory laparoscopy revealed a retroperitoneal hematoma and normal appendix. Reconstruction of CT images revealed that the mass was connected to the right renal capsular vein. Anticoagulation therapy improved the patient's symptoms. Postpartum thrombophlebitis can occur at locations other than the ovarian vein, such as the renal capsular vein. If a retroperitoneal mass is discovered during puerperium, a thorough investigation of the mass's continuity with surrounding vessels is essential to avoid unnecessary surgery.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: 67Ga-single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images vary according to the imaging time and image display methods. The calculation of an index, such as the standardized uptake value used in positron emission tomography, from 67Ga-SPECT images would enable the accurate evaluation of the region of accumulation. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the conversion formula, the lower detection limit (LDL), and recovery coefficient (RC) for quantifying the radiation concentration in the 67Ga accumulation site. METHODS: After chronologically obtaining SPECT/CT images at a radiation concentration of 1.0-442.4 kBq/mL with 27 bottles (diameter: 48 mm, 100 mL), the radiation concentration conversion formula was calculated using the successive approximation reconstruction method. The conversion coefficient was then calculated from the relationship between the count rate and the radiation concentration, and the LDL was determined. To compensate for the partial volume effect, the recovery curve was calculated using the mean SPECT count for six bottles (diameter: 9, 18, 29, 38, 48, and 94 mm). RESULTS: There was a linear relationship between the radiation concentration and the count rate with a good correlation (r=0.99). The LDL was 1.0 kBq/mL. The recovery curve reached a plateau at a diameter of at least 48 mm. CONCLUSION: The calculation of the absorbed dose index was possible using the radiation concentration conversion formula and the RC.

RESUMEN

A 73-year-old man presented with severe right upper quadrant abdominal pain, overlying erythema, hypotension and fever. CT scan revealed fasciitis and myositis of the right rectus abdominis muscle with subcutaneous inflammation involving the fasciae and muscle. Laboratory studies showed extreme leucocytosis. The combination of his symptoms, CT findings and laboratory results suggested necrotising fasciitis with systemic inflammatory response syndrome. Subsequent negative cultures on skin and muscle biopsy led to a diagnosis of necrotising neutrophilic panniculitis. Recurrent episodes of fever, and abdominal and buttocks pain at various sites, suggested an underlying haematological condition. Bone marrow biopsy and genetic analysis revealed chronic myelogenous leukaemia. The patient's symptoms of Sweet's syndrome resolved with glucocorticoid treatment and did not recur after starting treatment with a tyrosine kinase inhibitor.
