RESUMEN

The aim of this study was to characterize the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of T1/2 size (<4 cm) gingival squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and to verify the impact of bone invasion. This was a single-centre, retrospective cohort study involving 206 patients with gingival SCC (maxilla or mandible), treated between 2000 and 2020. The patients were divided into three subgroups based on tumour size and bone invasion. The 5-year overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) were 80.6% and 67.6%, respectively. Histological differentiation, advanced T stage, positive resection margin, bone invasion, and postoperative adjuvant therapy were associated with a poor prognosis (P < 0.05). Multivariate Cox analysis indicated that only histological differentiation (hazard ratio (HR) 2.68, P = 0.007) and bone invasion (HR 2.08, P = 0.036) were significantly associated with DFS. Bone invasion was observed in 145 (70.4%) patients, of whom 43 (20.9%) had a T1/2 size tumour. The subgroup with bone invasion and T1/2 size showed significantly worse OS and DFS when compared to the subgroup without bone invasion and similar or worse survival when compared to the subgroup with bone invasion and T3/T4 size. Histological differentiation and bone invasion were poor prognostic factors for gingival SCC, even in cases with small-sized tumours. For suspected bone invasion in small-sized tumours, an adequate bone margin is necessary and postoperative adjunctive therapy needs to be considered.

BACKGROUND: The gold standard for detecting bladder cancer is cystoscopy with biopsy or transurethral resection confirming histologic diagnosis. URO17® employs a chromogenically labeled monoclonal antibody to keratin 17 (k17), an intermediate filament cytoskeleton molecule associated with bladder, pancreatic, and cervical cancers. Preliminary studies evaluating k17 demonstrated a high sensitivity and specificity for the detection of bladder cancer, supporting the need for further study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of URO17. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study of participants undergoing urologic procedures between July 6, 2018 and July 17, 2019 at a single institution. Patients undergoing cystectomy, endoscopic bladder and/or upper tract procedure for probable urothelial carcinoma comprised cases; patients undergoing urologic procedures for other reasons comprised the control group (i.e. prostatectomy, nephrectomy, etc.). Voided urine samples were at the time of procedure; a minority of participants underwent multiple resections in the study period, thus, as many as three urine samples were taken from any given participant. Samples were distributed for blinded testing with URO17. Sensitivity and specificity were calculated. RESULTS: In 152 participants and 167 samples, URO17 demonstrated an overall sensitivity of 90% and 92% and a specificity of 88% and 87%, respectively. In 76 participants and 91 samples from patients with suspected urothelial carcinoma, the sensitivity was 90% and 92%, and the specificity was 50% and 54%, respectively. No controls demonstrated a positive URO17 result, and URO17 superseded urine cytology detection of low-grade and high-grade Ta. False positive results were associated with inflamed tissue or urothelial atypia on histology; the large majority had a history of intravesical therapy. CONCLUSION: Limitations include cross-sectional design and convenience sampling. URO17 may improve sensitivity of urine cytology in the detection of urothelial cancer, though further study is required to refine the application of this biomarker in clinical practice.

OBJECTIVES: The microscopic features of urine cytology specimens are subjective and may not reliably distinguish between benign urothelial cells and low-grade urothelial carcinoma (UC). Prior studies demonstrated that keratin 17 (K17) detection in biopsies is highly sensitive for UC. The current study aimed to define K17 diagnostic test performance for initial screening and detect recurrent UC in urine specimens. METHODS: K17 was detected by immunocytochemistry (ICC) in consecutively collected urine specimens (2018-2019). A qualitative score for the K17 test was determined in 81 samples (discovery cohort) and validated in 98 samples (validation cohort). K17 sensitivity and specificity were analyzed in both cohorts across all grades of UC. RESULTS: Based on the discovery cohort, the presence of 5 or more K17 immunoreactive urothelial cells (area under the curve = 0.90; P < .001) was the optimal threshold to define a K17-positive test. The sensitivity of the K17 ICC test for biopsy-confirmed UC was 35 of 36 (97%) and 18 of 21 (86%) in the discovery and validation cohorts, respectively. K17 was positive in 16 of 19 (84%) specimens with biopsy-confirmed low-grade UC and in 34 of 34 (100%) of specimens with high-grade UC. CONCLUSIONS: K17 ICC is a highly sensitive diagnostic test for initial screening and detection of recurrence across all grades of UC.

There is a clinical need to identify novel biomarkers to improve diagnostic accuracy for the detection of urothelial tumors. The current study aimed to evaluate keratin 17 (K17), an oncoprotein that drives cell cycle progression in cancers of multiple anatomic sites, as a diagnostic biomarker of urothelial neoplasia in bladder biopsies and in urine cytology specimens. We evaluated K17 expression by immunohistochemistry in formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded tissue specimens of non-papillary invasive urothelial carcinoma (UC) (classical histological cases), high grade papillary UC (PUC-LG), low grade papillary UC (PUC-HG), papillary urothelial neoplasia of low malignant potential (PUNLMP), and normal bladder mucosa. A threshold was established to dichotomize K17 status in tissue specimens as positive vs. negative, based on the proportion of cells that showed strong staining. In addition, K17 immunocytochemistry was performed on urine cytology slides, scoring positive test results based on the detection of K17 in any urothelial cells. Mann-Whitney and receiver operating characteristic analyses were used to compare K17 expression between histologic diagnostic categories. The median proportion of K17 positive tumor cells was 70% (range 20-90%) in PUNLMP, 30% (range 5-100%) in PUC-LG, 20% (range 1-100%), in PUC-HG, 35% (range 5-100%) in UC but staining was rarely detected (range 0-10%) in normal urothelial mucosa. Defining cases in which K17 was detected in ≥10% of cells were considered positive, the sensitivity of K17 in biopsies was 89% (95% CI: 80-96%) and the specificity was 88% (95% CI: 70-95%) to distinguish malignant lesions (PUC-LG, PUC-HG, and UC) from normal urothelial mucosa. Furthermore, K17 immunocytochemistry had a sensitivity of 100% and a specificity of 96% for urothelial carcinoma in 112 selected urine specimens. Thus, K17 is a sensitive and specific biomarker of urothelial neoplasia in tissue specimens and should be further explored as a novel biomarker for the cytologic diagnosis of urine specimens.

Advances in endoscopic-assisted neck surgery have allowed surgeons to conceal the scars via various approaches. However, studies comparing the approaches are still rare. The aim of this study was to comparatively analyze the feasibility and oncological outcomes of the retroauricular approach (RA) and the small transcervical approach (STC) for endoscopic-assisted selective neck dissection (EASND). Five fresh cadavers were recruited. EASND was performed via RA on one side and via STC on the contralateral side of each of the cadavers. The duration of the procedure was subdivided into preparation and EASND, and was recorded during the operation. The preserved vital structures were inspected by another surgeon after the cadaver dissection. The total number of lymph nodes retrieved was assessed by a pathologist. There was no significant difference in lymph node count between the RA group (mean 21, range 9-38) and the STC group (mean 23, range 7-34) (P>0.05). The operation time was significantly longer in the RA group than in the STC group (preparation, P=0.042; EASND, P=0.043). In terms of surgical feasibility, STC can be chosen as the approach of choice for EASND. In spite of a long learning curve, RA might be an alternative option in particular cases to minimize scarring.

Whether or not epitaxially grown superconducting films have the same bulk-like superconducting properties is an important concern. We report the structure and the electronic properties of epitaxially grown Ba(Fe1-x Co x )2As2 films using scanning tunneling microscopy and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS). This film showed a different surface structure, [Formula: see text]R45° reconstruction, from those of as-cleaved surfaces from bulk crystals. The electronic structure of the grown film is different from that in bulk, and it is notable that the film exhibits the same superconducting transport properties. We found that the superconducting gap at the surface is screened at the Ba layer surface in STS measurements, and the charge density wave was observed at the surface in sample in the superconducting state.

Unlike the levels of anatomical exploration, there is no consensus on the extent of lymph node dissection, or lymph node count (LNC), during selective neck dissection (SND). The aim of this study was to validate the prognostic impact of LNC on survival and to determine an optimal LNC cut-off value for SND. A retrospective investigation identified 78 patients with a diagnosis of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) who underwent SND (levels I-III or levels I-IV). LNC and clinicopathological variables were analyzed for any association with survival in Cox proportional hazards models. Based on the receiver operating characteristic curve, a cut-off value of 19 lymph nodes was found to predict overall survival (OS) (area under the curve 0.732, sensitivity 67.8%, specificity 75.0%; P=0.026) and disease-specific survival (DSS) (area under the curve 0.762, sensitivity 68.1%, specificity 77.8%; P=0.011). On Cox regression, LNC (≥19 vs. <19) was the only independent predictor of OS (hazard ratio 5.29, 95% confidence interval 1.39-20.05; P=0.014) and DSS (hazard ratio 6.76, 95% confidence interval 1.40-32.77; P=0.018). Similar results were obtained in the pathologically lymph node-negative subgroup (n=66). Based on the study findings, SND should include 19 or more lymph nodes for a survival benefit.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the ability of xenogenic bone and absorbable collagen sponge to function as an rhBMP-2 carrier and the osteoinductivity of bisphosphonate by comparison with recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley male rats were divided into four groups. Segmental ostectomy of both fibulae was performed, and the defect area was then treated with Rapiderm Pad (absorbable collagen sponge; COL_BMP) or CollaOss (xenogenic bone; XENO_BMP) with application of rhBMP-2. Alternatively, both fibulae were grafted with xenogenic bone with different bisphosphonate concentrations (XENO_Low BP, XENO_High BP). After 4 or 8 weeks, animals were sacrificed, and radiographic, histological, histomorphometric, and immunohistochemical analyses were performed. RESULTS: Recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 promoted bone formation, regardless of the carrier, and exhibited continuity between the graft material and defect area. Moreover, the results showed that higher concentrations of bisphosphonate were associated with greater bone formation than lower concentrations of bisphosphonate. CONCLUSION: Absorbable collagen sponges with rhBMP-2 were advantageous in that there was no remaining graft material and that the bone was remodeled to resemble the existing fibula. The local application of bisphosphonate promoted new bone formation, particularly when used at high concentrations. High-concentration bisphosphonate induced new bone formation comparable to rhBMP-2 with lesser remaining bone material.

We present the effect of geometrical parameters, particularly shape, on optical absorption enhancement for thin film solar cells based on crystalline silicon (c-Si) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) using a rigorous coupled wave analysis (RCWA) method. It is discovered that the "sweet spot" that maximizes efficiency of solar cells exists for the design of nanophotonic surfaces. For the case of ultrathin, rod array is practical due to the effective optical resonances resulted from the optimum geometry whereas parabola array is viable for relatively thicker cells owing to the effective graded index profile. A specific value of thickness, which is the median value of other two devices tailored by rod and paraboloid, is optimized by truncated shape structure. It is therefore worth scanning the optimum shape of nanostructures in a given thickness in order to achieve high performance.

2H-TaSe2 has been one of unique transition metal dichalcogenides exhibiting several phase transitions due to a delicate balance among competing electronic ground states. An unusual metallic state at high-T is sequentially followed by an incommensurate charge density wave (ICDW) state at ≈122 K and a commensurate charge density wave (CCDW) state at ≈90 K, and superconductivity at TC ~ 0.14 K. Upon systematic intercalation of Pd ions into TaSe2, we find that CCDW order is destabilized more rapidly than ICDW to indicate a hidden quantum phase transition point at x ~ 0.09-0.10. Moreover, TC shows a dramatic enhancement up to 3.3 K at x = 0.08, ~24 times of TC in 2H-TaSe2, in proportional to the density of states N(EF). Investigations of upper critical fields Hc2 in single crystals reveal evidences of multiband superconductivity as temperature-dependent anisotropy factor γH = , quasi-linear increase of , and an upward, positive-curvature in near TC. Furthermore, analysis of temperature-dependent electronic specific heat corroborates the presence of multiple superconducting gaps. Based on above findings and electronic phase diagram vs x, we propose that the increase of N(EF) and effective electron-phonon coupling in the vicinity of CDW quantum phase transition should be a key to the large enhancement of TC in PdxTaSe2.

The increase of the burden of dengue and chikungunya and the relative failure of traditional vector control strategies have highlighted the need to develop new control methods. RIDL-SIT, a vector control method based on the release of engineered male mosquitoes, has shown promising results from field trials conducted in the Cayman Islands and Brazil. In large scale use, a small proportion of females might be released along with the males. Such females are potential virus vectors; here we investigate the vertical transmission of dengue and chikungunya of homozygous OX513A females.We provided females of OX513A-My1 and a wild type comparator strain with blood meals artificially infected with dengue serotype 1, 2, 3, 4 or chikungunya viruses. For 14 days post-feeding, eggs laid by females were collected. Larvae and their mothers were first tested by qRT-PCR, then by inoculation on cell cultures to search for infectious viral particles. We found no significant difference between the minimum infection rate of OX513A-My1 and wild type females. We also discussed the potential number of females being released, a fraction of the female wild population. Consequently, we conclude that there are no evidence that OX513A-My females, if released into the environment, would cause more harm than their wild counterparts.

Miniplates and reconstruction plates are usually used to fix a fibular free flap, the gold standard in reconstruction of large segmental mandibular defects. Though biodegradable plates are used in orthognathic operations and repair of fractures nowadays, we know of no studies of the use of biodegradable plates in the reconstruction of segmental mandibular defects including a fibular free flap. We retrospectively reviewed 47 patients who had reconstruction of segmental mandibular defects with fibular free flaps during the past 10 years, and recorded clinical data and morbidity. We compared patients who had reconstruction of such defects with fibular free flaps and miniplates (n=26) with those in whom biodegradable plates had been used (n=21). There was no significant difference between miniplates and biodegradable plates with regard to overall complications (p=0.45) and failure of flaps (p=0.59). After confounding factors had been adjusted for with Cox's proportional hazards regression, there was no significant difference in the proportion of patients who developed a complication between the two groups (p=0.4). The type of plate does not seem to affect overall morbidity in reconstruction of the mandible with a fibular free flap.

UNLABELLED: The administration of teriparatide (TPTD) in conjunction with periodontal care could provide faster and more favorable clinical outcomes in previously refractory bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaws (BRONJ) cases compared to conventional dental care, combination of surgery and antimicrobial treatment. We also found that underlying vitamin D levels might influence the response to TPTD treatment. INTRODUCTION: Treatment of BRONJ is quite challenging and there are no standard treatment modalities. In this retrospective, longitudinal study, we examined whether additional TPTD administration could be beneficial for the resolution of BRONJ lesions compared to conservative management, such as antimicrobial treatment with or without surgery, and also studied the factors influencing the response to TPTD. METHODS: Twenty-four cases of intractable BRONJ were included: 15 subjects were assigned to the TPTD group and the other 9 subjects, who refused TPTD administration, were assigned to the non-TPTD group. All subjects in both groups continued calcium and vitamin D supplementation and the TPTD group additionally received a daily subcutaneous injection of 20 µg TPTD for 6 months. RESULTS: While 60.0% of the non-TPTD group showed one stage of improvement in BRONJ, 40.0% of the group did not show any improvement in disease status. In the TPTD group, 62.5% of the treated subjects showed one stage of improvement and the other 37.5% demonstrated a marked improvement, including two stages of improvement or complete healing, and there was not a single case that did not improve. The clinical improvement of BRONJ was statistically better in the TPTD group after the 6-month treatment (p < 0.05). Moreover, patients with higher baseline serum 25(OH)D levels showed better clinical therapeutic outcomes with TPTD. CONCLUSIONS: We observed the beneficial effects of TPTD on BRONJ, and subjects with optimal serum vitamin D concentrations seemed to reap the maximum therapeutic effects of TPTD. A prospective, randomized, controlled trial should be needed to further evaluate the therapeutic efficacy of TPTD in the resolution of BRONJ.

Clopidogrel therapy to prevent atherothrombosis faces the challenge of reduced responsiveness. The absorption of clopidogrel is regulated by multidrug-resistance protein 1 (MDR1) in the intestinal epithelium. Given that aspirin induces MDR1 in cancer cells and peripheral blood cells, it may induce MDR1 in intestinal epithelial cells as well, thereby affecting the absorption of clopidogrel. In this study, aspirin treatment induced the expression of MDR1 in human epithelial colorectal (Caco-2) cells in vitro and in rat intestine in vivo, as evidenced by dose-dependent increases in gene, protein, and efflux function. Along with the upregulation of MDR1 proteins by aspirin, clopidogrel absorption was significantly decreased in the aspirin-treated Caco-2 cells and in rat intestine. Our data provide evidence that prolonged use of aspirin may reduce the intestinal absorption of clopidogrel. Further human studies would be necessary to clarify whether these data have any relevance to prevention of stroke or myocardial infarction.

UNLABELLED: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a serious side effect of bisphosphonate therapy. The incidence of BRONJ is known to be low among patients treated with oral bisphosphonates. We investigated the prevalence, demographics, clinical manifestations, and treatment outcome of 24 patients with oral BRONJ in Asian populations. INTRODUCTION: The long-term safety of oral bisphosphonates is clinically important considering the rare but potentially serious complications such as bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) versus the effect of reducing and preventing osteoporotic fracture. The incidence of BRONJ is known to be low among patients treated with oral bisphosphonates around the world. However, the prevalence in those taking oral bisphosphonates for osteoporosis in Asian populations is unknown. Moreover, a recent article, showing that the majority of reported patients who received alendronate were Asian American, raised concern about the prevalence of oral BRONJ in Asian populations. The objective of this study was to investigate the estimated prevalence, clinical characteristics, and treatment outcome of oral BRONJ in Asian populations. METHODS: From October 2005 to December 2008, a retrospective review of medical charts identified 24 patients receiving oral bisphosphonates diagnosed as BRONJ at the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Yonsei University Dental Hospital, Seoul, South Korea. RESULTS: The estimated prevalence of oral BRONJ was 0.05-0.07%. The average oral bisphosphonate treatment duration was 43.1 months (range, 5-120 months). Treatment with oral antibiotics and/or surgery including sequestrectomy or alveolectomy showed relatively favorable results. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of oral BRONJ in Korea is similar to that reported previously in Western populations. We suggest that recognition of BRONJ and appropriate management pre- and post-dental surgery might reduce the frequency of BRONJ among patients receiving oral bisphosphonates.

BACKGROUND: Osteoporosis or low bone mass has been associated with cardiovascular disease and calcification in several clinical studies. However, few studies have assessed the relationship between bone mass and valvular calcification. The aim of this study was to evaluate the relationship between low bone mass and aortic valve sclerosis in Korean men and women. METHODS: A total of 211 men and 117 women were included in this study. Each subject's bone mineral density (BMD) was measured with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, and aortic valve sclerosis was assessed using transthoracic echocardiography. Association between low bone mass and aortic valve sclerosis was assessed with multivariate logistic regression analysis in this cross-sectional study. RESULTS: Of 328 total subjects enrolled in this study, 50 men (23.7%) and 18 women (15.4%) were found to have aortic valve sclerosis. The mean (+/-SD) BMD T-scores were -0.5 (+/-0.8) in men and -0.9 (+/-1.0) in women. After adjusting for covariates, only women with aortic valve sclerosis had significantly lower BMD T-scores than those without it. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that age, smoking and hypertension were independently associated with increased risk of aortic valve sclerosis in men. In women, however, logistic regression analysis showed that BMD T-score, as well as age, was an independent variable for aortic valve sclerosis. We also found that a T-score of less than -1.5 was significantly associated with increased risk of aortic valve sclerosis in women compared to normal T-scores. CONCLUSION: Low bone mass might be independently associated with increased risk of aortic valve sclerosis in women, but not in men. Women with low bone mass should be further evaluated for the presence of aortic valve sclerosis and related cardiovascular diseases.

PURPOSE: Our goal was to examine a panel of 11 biochemical variables, measured in cytosolic extracts of ovarian tissues (normal, benign, and malignant) by quantitative ELISAs for their ability to diagnose, prognose, and predict response to chemotherapy of ovarian cancer patients. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Eleven proteins were measured (9 kallikreins, B7-H4, and CA125) in cytosolic extracts of 259 ovarian tumor tissues, 50 tissues from benign conditions, 35 normal tissues, and 44 tissues from nonovarian tumors that metastasized to the ovary. Odds ratios and hazard ratios and their 95% confidence interval were calculated. Time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves for censored survival data were used to evaluate the performance of the biomarkers. Resampling was used to validate the performance. RESULTS: Most biomarkers effectively separated cancer from noncancer groups. A composite marker provided an area under the curve of 0.97 (95% confidence interval, 0.95-0.99) for discriminating normal and cancer groups. Univariately, hK5 and hK6 were positively associated with progression. After adjusting for clinical variables in multivariate analysis, both hK10 and hK11 significantly predicted time to progression. Increasing levels of hK13 were associated with chemotherapy response, and the predictive power of hK13 to chemotherapy response was improved by a panel of five biomarkers. CONCLUSIONS: The evidence shows that a group of kallikreins and multiparametric combinations with other biomarkers and clinical variables can significantly assist with ovarian cancer classification, prognosis, and response to platinum-based chemotherapy. In particular, we developed a multiparametric strategy for predicting ovarian cancer response to chemotherapy, comprising several biomarkers and clinical features.

OBJECTIVE: This study characterizes the expression of the novel biomarker B7-H4 in ovarian cancer tissue, normal ovaries, and benign ovarian tumors, and evaluates its relationship to CA125. METHODS: Ovarian tissue lysates from 251 patients with ovarian carcinoma were assessed for the levels of B7-H4 and CA125 by ELISA assays. For comparison, ovarian tissues from patients with benign ovarian tumors (n=43) and patients with normal ovaries (n=32) were tested. The marker concentrations were correlated with CA125 expression, clinicopathological variables, and patient outcome. RESULTS: Using a cut-off based on the 95th percentile of B7-H4 or CA125 concentration in the control group, B7-H4 was over-expressed in 48% of patients with stage I cancer, 55% of patients with stage II cancer, and 67% of patients with late stage cancer. CA125 was elevated in 31% patients with early stage cancer. B7-H4 was elevated in tumors of 30 patients with early stage cancer that were negative for CA125. The combination of B7-H4 and CA125 identified 56 early stage cancer patients (65%) as positive. Correlation of marker expression to clinical outcome showed that high B7-H4 levels were correlated with poor prognosis. However, the effect was not significant when outcome was adjusted for other clinicopathological variables. CONCLUSION: B7-H4 expression was low in normal ovaries and in benign tumors while half of early stage and two-thirds of late stage cancers over-expressed B7-H4. The data are consistent with previous observations and support further investigation of B7-H4 in the detection of early stage ovarian cancer either alone, or in combination with CA125.

OBJECTIVE: Early detection through regular screening could significantly reduce mortality from ovarian cancer. Advances in biomarkers and imaging continue to improve the sensitivity and specificity of cancer detection, but further improvements are still needed. In this study, we identified and evaluated three new serum biomarkers that may be used to improve detection of ovarian cancer. METHODS: Through genomic analysis, we identified B7-H4, Spondin 2, and DcR3 as over-expressed genes in ovarian cancer tissues. Sensitive sandwich ELISAs were developed to analyze the level of these novel markers in 68 serum samples from patients with ovarian cancer (16 early stage, 52 late stage) and 108 control samples, and 20 healthy women from which two serum samples were collected 1 year apart. CA125 levels were measured in all samples. RESULTS: Markers were evaluated for their ability to identify clinical disease. The three novel markers and CA125 were elevated in serum of ovarian cancer patients as compared to normal controls. B7-H4 showed the highest specificity, with the lowest frequency of elevation in all control groups. When all cases were compared against all controls, CA125, Spondin 2, B7-H4, and DcR3 showed areas under the ROC curve of 0.87, 0.78, 0.74, and 0.71, respectively. CA125 and B7-H4 showed the best diagnostic performance for early-stage, with AUCs of 0.90 and 0.80, respectively. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that B7-H4, Spondin 2, and DcR3 are promising new ovarian cancer markers that may improve early detection of cancer when used in combination with traditional diagnostic tests.

RESUMEN

A case is reported of spontaneous bone formation on the maxillary sinus floor associated with the extraction socket of a maxillary impacted tooth. An impacted maxillary second premolar of a 20-year-old male had been pushed into the maxillary sinus during surgical extraction. The tooth was removed using the sinus elevation technique. After 5 months of healing, the space between the sinus floor and the socket was filled with new bone. Later, implant surgery was successfully carried out without any sinus augmentation. Osteogenic activity of sinus mucosa and the blood clot in the extraction socket beneath the elevated sinus would have been important factors in this spontaneous bone formation.
