RESUMEN

Attributions regarding the nature, cause, and best treatment of mental health problems were examined in a total of 563 adults with serious mental illness from four ethnocultural groups, 185 family members, and 43 mental health practitioners. Attributions agreed in many areas, such as stress as a cause, and medical intervention and counseling as best treatment. Differences were found between the practitioner and other groups in attributions regarding the senses in the nature of mental illness, and in drugs and alcohol as a cause. The role of ethnicity was examined and treatment implications discussed.

RESUMEN

The NEO Five-Factor Inventory is the shortened version of the Revised NEO Personality Inventory. The aim of this study was to examine the reliability and validity of the Japanese version of the shortened version in the general population of Japan. This version was translated into Japanese and then administered to 2,051 adults in a rural town in Akita Prefecture. A total of 1,664 (81.1%) individuals gave valid answers. Internal reliability, assessed by Cronbach alpha for subscales, ranged from .60 to .77. The scales were only weakly correlated both with each other and with age. In a multiple regression analysis, only the Neuroticism scale score was a significant predictor of scores on the General Health Questionnaire. Factor analysis supported the theoretical structure of personality. Overall, the Japanese version showed good reliability and validity in this sample of the general population of Japan.

RESUMEN

This article presents a brief review of the definition, nosology, history, clinical features, and etiology of taijin kyofusho. Special attention is also given to Morita therapy for taijin kyofusho. The term taijin kyofusho literally means the disorder (sho) of fear (kyofu) of interpersonal relations (taijin). Morita therapy was developed by Masatake Morita in the 1910s to treat the Japanese mental disorders called shinkeishitsu and taijin kyofusho. It is suggested that taijin kyofusho is an excellent example of a mental disorder in which understanding its treatment is an integral part of its conceptualization.
