RESUMEN

An As2S3 fiber-based supercontinuum source that covers 3500 nm, extending from near visible to the midinfrared, is successfully reported by using a 200-fs-pulsed pump with nJ-level energy at 2.5 µm. The main features of our fiber-based source are two-fold. On the one hand, a low-loss As2S3 microstructured optical fiber has been fabricated, with typical attenuation below 2 dB/m in the 1-4 µm wavelength range. On the other hand, a 20-mm-long microstructured fiber sample is sufficient to enable a spectral broadening, spreading from 0.6 to 4.1 µm in a 40 dB dynamic range.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of endometrial metaplasia in histological and cytological specimens from the same cases, and to determine the relationship between various types of metaplasia and clinicopathological findings. METHODS: We reviewed 103 histological specimens diagnosed as endometrioid adenocarcinoma, in which endometrial smears had been obtained before surgery. We examined the correlation between the frequency of endometrial metaplasia occurring in association with carcinoma in both histological and cytological specimens. The categories of metaplasia were eosinophilic metaplasia, squamous metaplasia, mucinous metaplasia, ciliated cell metaplasia and others. We compared the incidence of endometrial metaplasia with the clinicopathological findings for each case. RESULTS: Endometrial metaplasia was recognized in 90 (87.4%) of the histological and 80 (77.7%) of the cytological specimens of 103 specimens, with the respective frequency of subtypes as follows: eosinophilic metaplasia (36.0% and 43.7%), squamous metaplasia (70.9% and 68.0%), mucinous metaplasia (38.8% and 19.4%), ciliated cell metaplasia (22.3% and 2.9%) and others (11.7% and 0%). Mixed subtypes were seen in 58.3% and 41.7% of histological and cytological specimens, respectively. In histology, mucinous metaplasia was significantly more frequent in G1-G2 than G3 carcinomas (P = 0.0089). Ciliated cell metaplasia was significantly related to endometrial hyperplasia (P = 0.0068). In cytology, eosinophilic and mucinous metaplasia were significantly associated with G1-G2 cases (P = 0.0061 and P = 0.0385). CONCLUSIONS: Endometrial metaplasia was seen in 87.4% of the histological and 77.7% of the cytological specimens. Where routine endometrial cytopathology is practiced, it is important to understand the detailed histological and cytological features of these changes.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Although Japan is categorised as an intermediate tuberculosis (TB) burden country, the incidence of TB is nevertheless decreasing. OBJECTIVE: To identify metabolic and nutritional risk factors for the development of TB. DESIGN: We compared 522 TB in-patients (350 males, 172 females) with age- and sex-matched 522 controls randomly selected from among individuals undergoing comprehensive medical examinations. Patients with relapsed or multidrug-resistant TB were excluded. RESULT: The proportion of males with glucose intolerance was significantly higher in TB patients than in controls (34.2% vs. 14.4%). Among females, the proportion with glucose intolerance was higher in TB patients than in controls (18.3% vs. 10.0%). In male and female controls and female TB patients, individuals with glucose intolerance had significantly higher body mass index (BMI) than those without glucose intolerance. Low BMI was prevalent in male TB patients; there was no significant difference between the BMIs of TB patients with glucose intolerance and those without. Significant associations were found between BMI, peripheral white blood cell count, serum albumin concentration and glucose intolerance and the development of TB in males. Albumin was a parameter significantly associated with TB development in females. CONCLUSION: In Japan, the development of TB is still associated with glucose intolerance and malnutrition.

RESUMEN

Anomalous pressure dependent conductivity is revealed for heteroacene organic field-effect transistors of dinaphtho[2, 3-b:2', 3'-f]thieno[3, 2-b]thiophene single crystals in the direction of a and b crystallographic axes. In contrast to the normal characteristics of a monotonic increase in mobility µ with the application of external hydrostatic pressure P in conductors, we found that the present organic semiconductor devices exhibit nonmonotonic and gigantic pressure dependence including an even negative pressure coefficient dµ/dP. In combination with a structural analysis based on x-ray diffraction experiments under pressure, it is suggested that on-site molecular orientation and displacement peculiar in heteroacene molecules are responsible for the anomalous pressure effect.

RESUMEN

In this work, we report the experimental observation of supercontinua generation in two kinds of suspended-core microstructured soft-glass optical fibers. Low loss, highly nonlinear, tellurite and As2S3 chalcogenide fibers have been fabricated and pumped close to their zero-dispersion wavelength in the femtosecond regime by means of an optical parametric oscillator pumped by a Ti:Sapphire laser. When coupled into the fibers, the femtosecond pulses result in 2000-nm bandwidth supercontinua reaching the Mid-Infrared region and extending from 750 nm to 2.8 µm in tellurite fibers and 1 µm to 3.2 µm in chalcogenide fibers, respectively.

RESUMEN

Experimental evidences are presented showing unusually large and highly anisotropic vibrations in the "simple cubic" (SC) unit cell adopted by calcium over a broad pressure ranging from 30-90 GPa and at temperature as low as 40 K. X-ray diffraction patterns show a preferential broadening of the (110) Bragg reflection indicating that the atomic displacements are not isotropic but restricted to the [110] plane. The unusual observation can be rationalized invoking a simple chemical perspective. As the result of pressure-induced s → d transition, Ca atoms situated in the octahedral environment of the simple cubic structure are subjected to Jahn-Teller distortions. First-principles molecular dynamics calculations confirm this suggestion and show that the distortion is of dynamical nature as the cubic unit cell undergoes large amplitude tetragonal fluctuations. The present results show that, even under extreme compression, the atomic configuration is highly fluxional as it constantly changes.

RESUMEN

Nano-polycrystalline diamonds (NPDs) consist of nanosized diamond grains oriented in random directions. They have high toughness and isotropic mechanical properties. A NPD has neither the cleavage feature nor the anisotropy of hardness peculiar to single-crystal diamonds. Therefore, it is thought to be useful as a diamond anvil. We previously reported the usefulness of a NPD as an anvil for high-pressure development. In this study, some additional high-pressure generating tests using diamond anvils of various shapes prepared from NPDs were conducted to investigate the advantage of using NPDs for anvil applications. The results revealed that the achievable pressure value of a NPD anvil with a culet size of more than 300 µm is about 1.5 to 2 times higher than that of single-crystal diamond anvils, indicating that NPD anvils have considerable potential for large-volume diamond anvils with large culet sizes.

RESUMEN

Europium hydride EuH(x), when exposed to high-pressure H2, has been found to exhibit the following structural and valence changes: Pnma(x = 2, divalent) → P63/mmc(x = 2, 7.2-8.7 GPa) → I4/m(x > 2, 8.7-9.7 GPa) → I4/mmm(x > 2, 9.7 GPa-,trivalent). With a trivalent character and a distorted cubic fcc structure, the I4/mmm structure is the ß phase commonly observed for other rare-earth metal hydrides. Our study clearly demonstrates that EuH(x) is no longer an irregular member of the rare-earth metal hydrides.

RESUMEN

The aim of this paper is to present an overview of the recent achievements of our group in the fabrication and optical characterizations of As(2)S(3) microstructured optical fibers (MOFs). Firstly, we study the synthesis of high purity arsenic sulfide glasses. Then we describe the use of a versatile process using mechanical drilling for the preparation of preforms and then the drawing of MOFs including suspended core fibers. Low losses MOFs are obtained by this way, with background level of losses reaching less than 0.5 dB/m. Optical characterizations of these fibers are then reported, especially dispersion measurements. The feasibility of all-optical regeneration based on a Mamyshev regenerator is investigated, and the generation of a broadband spectrum between 1 µm and 2.6 µm by femto second pumping around 1.5 µm is presented.

RESUMEN

The pressure-induced valence transition in TmTe was investigated by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering at the Tm L3 edge, a powerful probe of the rare-earth valent state. The data are analyzed within the Anderson impurity model which yields key parameters such as the Tm 4f-5d hybridization. In addition to the general tendency of the f electrons towards delocalization, we find a plateau in both the Tm valence and hybridization pressure dependences between 4.3 and 6.5 GPa which is interpreted in terms of an n-channel Kondo (NCK) screening process. This behavior is at odds with the usually continuous, single-channel Kondo-like f delocalization while being supported by the seminal calculations of the NCK temperature in Tm ion by Saso et al. Our study raises the interesting possibility that an NCK effect realized in a compressed mixed-valent f system could impede the concomitant electron delocalization.

RESUMEN

AIMS: Squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) is the most common form of malignant transformation in mature cystic teratoma (MCT) of the ovary. Some investigators have suggested the possibility of origin from columnar epithelium. The aim of this study was to analyse such tumours immunohistochemically to elucidate their histogenesis. METHODS AND RESULTS: The expression of cytokeratin (CK) 10 and CK18 was examined in 21 samples of SCC arising in MCT. The expression of CK10 and CK18 was also assessed in SCCs arising in different organs (skin, vulva, lung and uterine cervix) for the purpose of comparison. SCC in MCT expressed CK10 in 7/21 cases [33.3%, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.12-0.53] and CK18 in 14/21 cases (66.7%, 95% CI 0.46-0.87). SCC in MCT expressed CK10 less frequently, but CK18 more frequently, as is the case in SCCs of the uterine cervix (CK10, 20%; CK18, 70%) and the lung (CK10, 5%; CK18, 90%), both of which are derived from columnar epithelium by squamous metaplasia. CONCLUSIONS: SCC in MCT may be derived from metaplastic squamous epithelium.

RESUMEN

We have carried out small angle x-ray scattering experiments of expanded fluid Hg in the metal-nonmetal (M-NM) transition region around 9.0 g cm(-3). Increase of small angle scattering intensity following the Ornstein-Zernike equation is clearly observed in the M-NM transition region as well as near the liquid-vapor critical point at 5.8 g cm(-3). The short-range correlation length, R, becomes twice as large in the M-NM transition region as in the critical region. The enhancement of R in expanded fluid Hg suggests a new type of fluctuations reflecting a first-order M-NM transition.

RESUMEN

The structure phase transition and the equation of state (EOS) of the third-period simple metal Al were investigated at pressure up to 333 GPa by powder x-ray diffraction experiments. The theoretically predicted fcc-hcp transition was observed at the reduced volume V/V0 of 0.509(1), corresponding to the pressure of 217+/-10 GPa. From the obtained pressure-volume data, the pressure derivative of the bulk modulus K0' for the EOS of fcc-Al was determined to be 4.83(3) by fitting to the Vinet formulation with a fixed value 72.7 GPa of K0 obtained from previous ultrasonic experiments.

RESUMEN

The authors report a case study of a 54-year-old male admitted to our hospital with severe chest pain and ST depression in II, III and aVf lead on the electrocardiogram. The chest X-ray showed an enlarged superior mediastinum. An enhanced computed tomography (CT) was performed and confirmed the diagnosis of acute type A aortic dissection. The patient underwent emergency surgical repair with the replacement of the ascending aorta. The patient recovered without complication until the fifteenth postoperative day, when another severe chest pain appeared. Emergency coronary angiography revealed a remaining dissection in both the left anterior descending artery (LAD) and the left circumflex artery (LCx). Implantation of Elite stents to the LAD and the LCx was performed. The patient recovered uneventfully after this operation. Remaining coronary artery dissection after the replacement of the ascending aorta is very rare. In this case coronary intervention with Elite stents was effective.

RESUMEN

The effects of different types of dietary fat on the activities of hepatic enzymes related to fatty acid synthesis [glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC)], oxidation [acyl-CoA synthetase (AST), carnitine palmitoyl transferase (CPT), and peroxisomal beta-oxidation (PbetaOX)], and lipogenesis [phosphatidate phosphohydrolase (PAP), diacylglycerol acyltransferase (DGAT), and phosphocholine diacylglycerol transferase (PCDGT)], and plasma and liver lipid levels were investigated in male Wistar rats. The animals were 6 weeks old and about 120 g of body weight, and were fed on test diets containing 20% of a mixture of tripalmitin, tristearin and corn oil (SFA), olive oil (OLI), sunflower oil (SUN), linseed oil (LIS), and sardine oil (SAR) for 2 weeks. The concentrations of plasma total cholesterol (T-CHOL), high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-CHOL), triacylglycerol (TG) and phospholipid (PL) were generally higher in the rats fed on SFA and OLI than in those given SUN, LIS and SAR. The rats fed on OLI had a higher level of liver T-CHOL than those fed on the other fats. The liver TG content was nearly higher from the intake of SFA and OLI than from SUN, LIS and SAR, although the liver PL level was not affected by the type of dietary fat. The SFA and OLI groups had the highest activities of hepatic G6PDH and ACC, and the SAR group, the lowest activities. The activities of AST and CPT, and peroxisomal PbetaOX in the liver were higher in the rats fed on the LIS and SAR diets than in those given the other diets. The hepatic PAP activity was higher from the intake of OLI and SUN, and tended to be higher from SFA than from LIS and SAR. The activity of liver DGAT was higher from SFA and inclined to be higher from OLI, SUN, and LIS than from SAR, while the PCDGT activity in the liver was not effected by the type of dietary fat. The concentrations of plasma and liver TG were generally positively correlated with the activities of liver enzymes related to the synthesis of fatty acids and lipids, and negatively with those involved in fatty acid oxidation. Based on these results, it is suggested that the levels of plasma and liver TG were controlled by different types of dietary fat through changes in the hepatic enzyme activities related to fatty acid synthesis, lipogenesis, and fatty acid oxidation.

RESUMEN

We show that the topological significance of the gel mobility of cis-diamminedichloroplatinum(II) (DDP)-closed circular DNA (ccDNA) adducts decreases with reaction time, until a point at which it joins relaxed DNA, and that the mobility of the adducts increases again. There is no relationship between the relative length of the adducts and the gel mobility. Although the significance of the decrease of gel mobility is due to the unwinding of cis-DDP-DNA (or trans-DDP-DNA) adducts, the conformational significance of the subsequent increase in mobility is unclear. To elucidate the conformational significance for unwinding of the adducts, we measured the writhing number (Wk) of the adducts using electron microscopy and analyzed the topological states of cis-DDP (or trans-DDP) adducts based on the White rule, Lk=Wk+Tk. Where, Lk and Tk represent the linking and twisting number in the ring, respectively. From the data, we found that the Wk of cis-DDP-ccDNA adducts in comparison with trans-DDP-ccDNA adducts increases from a negative to a positive number with time. This suggests that cis-DDP plays a role in the change of the topological state of ccDNA. In the abstraction of platinum from the adducts with CN- ion, the differences in both topological states may explain why Pt in trans-DDP is abstracted more easily than in cis-DDP. To explain the abstraction of Pt ion, we also discuss the findings based on the thermodynamic cycle in a intermolecular crosslink model Pt(NH3)2(guanine)2(2+)-->Pt(CN)4(2-) using the Pt parametrized PM3 method.

RESUMEN

Retroperitoneoscopic ureterolithotomy was successfully performed in two patients with impacted upper ureteral stone. The retroperitoneal space was extended using a balloon dissector and four ports were established into the retroperitoneal space according to Gaur's procedure (1993). The impacted ureteral stone was removed after the ureter was incised using a hook electrode. An indwelling splint or stent was placed in the ureter. The incised ureter was not sutured and an indwelling drain was placed in the retroperitoneal space. Urine leakage ceased within 3 days postoperatively. With regard to complications, the first patient developed wound infection caused by methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus and the second patient had abscess formation in the psoas muscle. Retroperitoneoscopic ureterolithotomy should be useful as an alternative treatment for impacted ureteral stones because it involves minimal postoperative pain.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To assess the immunological status of patients with renal cell carcinoma (RCC), by analysing the proportion of cluster-of-differentiation 4-positive (CD4+) cells showing intracellular cytokine production, i.e. interferon-gamma derived from T-helper (Th) 1 and interleukin-4 derived from Th2 cells, among peripheral blood lymphocytes from these patients Patients, subjects and methods Peripheral blood samples (5 mL) were collected from 36 patients (mean age 61 years, range 44-78) with RCC before and after they underwent nephrectomy. The proportion of cytokine-producing CD4+ cells was determined by flow cytometric analysis after stimulating the cells with phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, ionomycin and brefeldin A, and staining the cells with fluorescein isothiocyanate-labelled anti-interferon-gamma, anti-interleukin-4 and anti-immunoglubulin-2b antibodies. The results were expressed as the percentage of cytokine-producing cells in the CD4+ population. As a control, peripheral blood obtained from 35 healthy volunteers (mean age 34 years, range 22-49) was also analysed. RESULTS: The proportion of CD4+ cells producing interferon-gamma and interleukin-4 was significantly higher (P < 0.04 and P < 0.001, respectively) in patients with RCC than in controls. The Th1/Th2 ratio (i.e. the ratio of CD4+ cells producing each cytokine) was significantly lower in patients with RCC (P < 0.001). There was a significant correlation in the controls between interferon-gamma and interleukin-4 production (r = 0.489, P < 0.01) but not in patients with RCC. The proportion of CD4+ cells producing interleukin-4 was significantly higher and the Th1/Th2 ratio significantly lower in patients with high-stage than in those with low-stage RCC (P < 0.05). The percentage of CD4+ cells producing interleukin-4 was significantly less after nephrectomy in those with low-stage RCC (P < 0.01) and the Th1/Th2 ratio significantly greater (P < 0.05) than before nephrectomy; there was no such trend in patients with high-stage RCC. Conclusion An evaluation of the production of interferon-gamma and interleukin-4 in CD4+ peripheral blood lymphocytes is useful for assessing the immunological status of patients with RCC; there is a change in the predominant response from Th1 to Th2 with increasing stage of RCC.
