The inclusion of different percentages of digestible lysine in low-protein diets was evaluated for male and female free-range broiler chickens, from 1 to 28 days. We used 792 female and 792 male naked neck chickens a day in a completely randomized 2x6 factorial scheme (sex x percentages of digestible lysine: 0.85, 0.90, 0.95, 1.00, 1.05 and1.10%) with six replicates of 22 broilers. No interaction of sex versus lysine was found. Superiority was observed (P<0.05) in males compared to females for all variables.Weight gainof chickens decreased linearly(P<0.05) with increasing levels of digestible lysine in the diet. There was a linear reduction (P<0.01) in feed intake, protein and metabolizable energy. On the other hand, the consumption of digestible lysine increased linearly (P<0.01) with the increase of its concentration in the diet. There was nodifference (P>0.05) in food conversion. In the chemical composition of the carcass, only thepercentage of mineral matter was influenced (P<0.05) bydigestible lysine levels. It was concluded that the level of 0.85% for type redneck broiler meets the nutritional requirement of digestible lysine in diets containing lower protein concentrations.

RESUMEN

Phytoseiulus macropilis Banks (Acari: Phytoseiidae) is an effective predator of tetranychid mites, but there are no data on its response to pesticides. We investigated the resistance of the predatory mite P. macropilis to the acaricides abamectin and dimethoate, and we examined the fitness costs associated with resistance. Two populations were tested: one from conventional cultivation and another from an area not commercially exploited. After the application of acaricides to the predator, we determined the lethal effects of the acaricides, the instantaneous rate of population increase (r(i)), the predation on Tetranychus urticae Koch (Acari: Tetranychidae) and its ability to locate prey in an olfactometer. P. macropilis exhibited resistance to dimethoate only. The low level of resistance (9.4x) of the predator did not affect their ability to locate prey. However, the dimethoate resistant population was not as effective in contatining prey population when in lower density and exhibited a more pronounced decrease of r(i) in the presence of this acaricide, due to the reduced oviposition of the predator, a likely consequence of the different genetic background of this population.

RESUMEN

Coronary artery fistula is a rare congenital anomaly in which the involved coronary artery empties into a cardiac chamber, pulmonary artery, or other structure. Its diagnosis can be made noninvasively by finding a dilated coronary artery by 2-dimensional (2D) echocardiography, and its drainage can be detected by color flow mapping. We describe features of coronary artery fistulas in 8 patients whose condition was prospectively diagnosed by Doppler echocardiography with color flow mapping. The right coronary artery was involved in 4 cases and the left coronary artery in 4. Four fistulas drained to the right ventricle, 2 to the right atrium, and 2 to the pulmonary artery. In 1 patient who had left and right coronary fistulas to the pulmonary artery, only the first was diagnosed noninvasively. The diagnosis of coronary fistulas can usually be made by 2D echocardiography with color flow mapping. However, fistulas to the pulmonary artery may be more difficult to detect by 2D echocardiography because the coronary artery may be of normal size and the shunt small.

RESUMEN

Adenosine deaminase (ADA) and lymphocyte proportion are known to be independently elevated in tuberculous effusions, but are non-specific, and false positive results are frequent. To overcome this problem the combined use of both parameters was prospectively studied in 276 patients with pleural effusion seen at Porto Alegre, Brazil. Using a cut-off level of 40 U/l at 37 degrees C (method of Giusti19) for ADA activity and lymphocyte proportion of more than 50%, the correct diagnosis of tuberculosis (sensitivity) was made in 90.7% (CI 87.3-94.1%) of 54 patients. A specificity of 97.7% (CI 95.9-99.5%) was recorded. Five false positive diagnoses of tuberculous effusion were made. Five false negative diagnoses were made: three cases with haematogenous tuberculous dissemination with low ADA levels, and two other patients with low lymphocyte proportion. The combined use of ADA activity determination and lymphocyte proportion is a highly efficient diagnostic strategy of low cost, that merits wider use.

RESUMEN

This is a report of a patient presenting with a hematoma compressing the right atrium in the immediate post-operative period and the diagnosis by echocardiography allowed prompt surgical treatment with reversibility of the hemodynamic failure. Echocardiography is an important tool in the diagnosis of post-operative complications and transesophageal echocardiography can be very helpful in this setting, where technically difficult transthoracic exams are the rule.

RESUMEN

The case of a 15-month-old patient with Shone's anomaly is reported. This anomaly includes supravalvar mitral ring, parachute mitral valve, subaortic stenosis and coarctation. The patient underwent a corrective surgery with resection of the supravalvar mitral ring, mitral comissurotomy and resection of the subaortic stenosis, anatomically significant lesions, with good postoperative development. A bibliographical review on the anomaly was undertaken.

RESUMEN

In order to evaluate our clinical results with the use of the Biocor prosthesis, a total of 1,101 patients were studied. Follow-up was from 1 to 96 months (mean 48); cumulative follow-up in the aortic group (385 patients) was 1,230 patient years and in the mitral group (716 patients) 3,018 patient years. Mitral patients had 102 late complications (14.24%), and aortic patients had 51 (13.2%). A total of 220 patients were under 20 years of age (176 mitral, 44 aortic). Intrinsic valve failure in this subgroup was found in 43% of mitral patients and 29% of aortic patients. Prosthetic endocarditis was more frequent in the aortic group (45%) than in the mitral group (29.9%). Sixty-two patients were reoperated, with a hospital mortality of 12.6%. Reoperation was more frequent in the mitral group and in patients under 20 years of age. The actuarial curve free mortality related to the bioprosthesis was 97.1% (32 patients). At the 8-year follow-up, 96.9% of the aortic versus 95.2% of the mitral group were free of valve dysfunction, and the majority were in Classes I or II of the New York Heart Association (NYHA) classification. The incidence of reoperation, although significant, is acceptable, especially since the bioprosthesis offers a safer alternative than mechanical prostheses followed for similar periods. Analysis of our results suggests the need for continued research for an ideal bioprosthesis.
