RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is poorly characterized in anesthetized cats, but can cause aspiration pneumonia, esophagitis, and esophageal stricture formation. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether pre-anesthetic orally administered omeprazole increases gastric and esophageal pH and increases serum gastrin concentrations in anesthetized cats, and to determine the prevalence of GER using combined multichannel impedance and pH monitoring. ANIMALS: Twenty-seven healthy cats undergoing elective dental procedures. METHODS: Prospective, double-masked, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial. Cats were randomized to receive 2 PO doses of omeprazole (1.45-2.20 mg/kg) or an empty gelatin capsule placebo 18-24 hours and 4 hours before anesthetic induction. Blood for measurement of serum gastrin concentration was collected during anesthetic induction. An esophageal pH/impedance catheter was utilized to continuously measure esophageal pH and detect GER throughout anesthesia. RESULTS: Mean gastric pH in the cats that received omeprazole was 7.2 ± 0.4 (range, 6.6-7.8) and was significantly higher than the pH in cats that received the placebo 2.8 ± 1.0 (range, 1.3-4.1; P < .001). Omeprazole administration was not associated with a significant increase in serum gastrin concentration (P = .616). Nine of 27 cats (33.3%) had ≥1 episode of GER during anesthesia. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Pre-anesthetic administration of 2 PO doses of omeprazole at a dosage of 1.45-2.20 mg/kg in cats was associated with a significant increase in gastric and esophageal pH within 24 hours, but was not associated with a significant increase in serum gastrin concentration. Prevalence of reflux events in cats during anesthesia was similar to that of dogs during anesthesia.

We examined the associations between intestinal helminth infracommunity structure and infection parameters and the age, size, and year and region of collection of 130 female lesser scaup (Aythya affinis) during their 2014-2015 spring migrations through the upper Midwest, USA. We identified a total of 647,174 individual helminths from 40 taxa, including 20 trematodes, 14 cestodes, 4 nematodes and 2 acanthocephalans parasitizing lesser scaup within the study area. Lesser scaup were each infected with 2-23 helminth taxa. One digenean, Plenosoma minimum, is reported for the first time in lesser scaup and in the Midwest. Mean trematode abundance and total helminth abundance was significantly less in 2015 than 2014, and we suspect that colder weather late in 2015 impacted the intermediate host fauna and caused the observed differences. Brillouin's species diversity of helminths was greatest in the northernmost region of the study area, which coincides with the range of a non-indigenous snail that indirectly causes annual mortality events of lesser scaup. While host age and size were not determined to be influential factors of helminth infracommunity structure, non-parametric ordination and permutational analysis of co-variance revealed that year and region of collection explained differences in helminth infracommunities. Our results suggest that spatiotemporal variations play an important role in the structure of intestinal helminth infracommunities found in migrating lesser scaup hosts, and may therefore impact host ability to build endogenous reserves at certain stopover locations in the Midwest.

RESUMEN

The Callitrichaceae are an aquatic family of dicots that include the single, geographically cosmopolitan genus Callitriche. Callitriche contains 40-50 terrestrial, amphibious, and obligately submersed species, and it is the only known genus in the plant kingdom with co-occurring aerial and hydrophilous pollination syndromes. Pollen morphology and ultrastructure were described for 13 Callitriche species using scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. Representative taxa of each growth form were examined; these included three terrestrial species (C. deflexa, C. peploides, and C. nuttallii), nine amphibious species (C. brutia, C. cophocarpa, C. cophocarpa-stagnalis hybrid, C. cribrosa, C. hamulata, C. heterophylla var. heterophylla, C. lusitanica, C. marginata, and C. trochlearis), and one obligately submersed species (C. truncata). Of the amphibious taxa, C. heterophylla var. heterophylla and C. trochlearis had internal geitonogamy, a type of internal self-fertilization. Pollen from all taxa was spheroidal, small, intectate, and lacked well-defined apertures. Taxa primarily differed with respect to exine thickness, surface ornamentation, and the presence or absence of aperture-like regions. The pollen of terrestrial species, as well as that of C. marginata, had well-developed exines with thick sculptured and basal layers. In general, amphibious taxa produced pollen with distinct, but thinner, exines than that of terrestrial taxa. Pollen of the amphibious taxa with internal geitonogamy had a thicker basal layer than species without internal geitonogamy, whereas the overall exine was reduced in C. hamulata and absent in C. brutia and C. lusitanica. Pollen of the obligately submersed C. truncata also lacked an exine. These palynological data were correlated with growth habits and related pollination biologies, as well as with phylogenetic interpretations of Callitrichaceae. Exine reduction or loss has evolved at least twice in the family, and it is associated with aneuploid reduction in chromosome number.

(1)H NMR spectra of earthworms Eisenia veneta treated with 3-trifluoromethyl-aniline in a 72-h contact filter paper test have been analysed using pattern recognition techniques to determine the biochemical response. Various strategies for data reduction of the metabolite profile, and illustration by principal components analysis are applied and discussed. The use of mean principal components plots in simplifying group data representation and highlighting the dose-response function is demonstrated. Hierarchical cluster analysis, and cluster significance analysis of the principal components were also used to examine the relative distribution of dose groups. Identification and assignment of metabolite responses to toxicity were found via correlation coefficient-shift plots. As measured by the correlation coefficients alanine was the most significant metabolite, but increased levels of other amino acids such as glycine and asparagine were also observed. Further, elevated levels of glucose, and the citric acid cycle intermediates citrate and succinate were noted as potential biomarkers of toxicity. This work provides a basis for examining the biochemical response of invertebrates to toxins. This should provide a framework to examine toxicity effects of other halogenated aromatic pollutants to earthworms used as environmental monitors.

The Nelumbonaceae are a small family of aquatic angiosperms comprising Nelumbo nucifera and Nelumbo lutea. Historically, the genus has been considered to be closely related to Nymphaeales, however new systematic work has allied Nelumbo with lower eudicots, particularly Platanus. In recent years, studies of pollen development have contributed greatly to the understanding of phylogenetic relationships, but little has been known about these events in Nelumbo. In this paper, pollen and anther development are morphologically described for the first time in N. lutea. A comprehensive ontogenetic sequence is documented, including the sporogenous tissue, microspore mother cell, tetrad, free spore, and mature pollen grain stages. The deposition of a microspore mother cell coat and callose wall, the co-occurrence of both tetrahedral and tetragonal tetrads, the formation of a primexine in tetrads, and primexine persistence into the late free spore stage are shown. The majority of exine development occurs during the free spore stage with the deposition of a tectate-columellate ectexine, a lamellate endexine, and an unusual granular layer below and intermixed with the endexine lamellae. A two-layered intine forms rapidly during the earliest mature pollen stage. Major events of anther development documented include the degradation of a secretory-type tapetum during the free spore stage and the rapid formation of U-shaped endothecial thickenings in the mature pollen grain stage. The majority of mature pollen grains are tricolpate, however less common monosulcate and diaperturate grains also develop. Co-occurring aperture types in Nelumbo have been suggested to be an important transition in angiosperm aperture number. However, aperture variability in Nelumbo may be correlated with the lateness of aperture ontogeny in the genus, which occurs in the early free spore stage. This character, as well as other details of pollen and anther ontogeny in Nelumbo, are compared to those of Nymphaeales and Platanus in an effort to provide additional insight into systematic and phylogenetic relationships. Although Nelumbo is similar to both groups in several characters, the ontogenetic sequence of the genus is different in many ways.

Three combinations of surgical correction for drool have been evaluated and compared in patients with cerebral palsy. All groups underwent submaxillary gland resection. Sixteen patients underwent parotid duct transfer or repositioning (Wilkie-Brody), 3 patients underwent parotid duct ligation, and 22 patients were treated with a combination of right parotid duct ligation and left parotid duct repositioning. Follow-up demonstrates that there is no visual or palpable difference between ligation and relocation of the parotid duct and that the combination of ligation and repositioning of the parotid duct is preferable to either bilateral ligation or bilateral repositioning alone.

RESUMEN

A mail survey was used to document the surgical methods for repair of cleft lip and palate being taught in Plastic Surgery Training Programs. The survey was completed by Senior Residents representing over 80% of the training programs in the United States. The results demonstrate that variation exists regarding methods and techniques for cleft lip and palate surgery.
