RESUMEN

Plastics are an essential part of human life and their production is increasing every year. Plastics degrade into small particles (<5 mm, microplastics, MPs) in the environment due to various factors. MPs are widely distributed in the environment, and all living organisms are exposed to the effects of MPs. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small membrane particles surrounded by a lipid bilayer that are released into the environment by various cell types and are highly involved in inter- and intra-cellular communication through the exchange of proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids between cells. There have been numerous reports of adverse effects associated with the accumulation of MPs in human and animal cells, with recent studies showing that plastic treatment increases the number of EVs released from cells, but the mechanisms by which MPs accumulate and move between cells remain unclear. In this study, we investigated whether polystyrene (PS)-MPs are transferred cell-to-cell via EVs. This study showed that cell-derived EVs can transport plastic particles. Furthermore, we confirmed the accumulation of PS-MPs transported by EVs within cells using a real-time imaging device. This study provides an understanding of potential EVs-mediated effects of PS-MPs on organisms and suggests directions for further research.

Heme-containing enzymes, critical across life's domains and promising for industrial use, face stability challenges. Despite the demand for robust industrial biocatalysts, the mechanisms underlying the thermal stability of heme enzymes remain poorly understood. Addressing this, our research utilizes a 'keystone cofactor heme-interaction approach' to enhance ligand binding and improve the stability of lignin peroxidase (LiP). We engineered mutants of the white-rot fungus PcLiP (Phanerochaete chrysosporium) to increase thermal stability by 8.66 °C and extend half-life by 29 times without losing catalytic efficiency at 60 °C, where typically, wild-type enzymes degrade. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that an interlocked cofactor moiety contributes to enhanced structural stability in LiP variants. Additionally, a stability index developed from these simulations accurately predicts stabilizing mutations in other PcLiP isozymes. Using milled wood lignin, these mutants achieved triple the conversion yields at 40 °C compared to the wild type, offering insights for more sustainable white biotechnology through improved enzyme stability.

Background: Although the association between smoking and health-related quality of life (HRQoL) has been established, the effects of tobacco products, including combustible cigarettes (CCs) and non-combustible nicotine or tobacco products (NNTPs), on HRQoL remain unclear. This study examined the association between tobacco use and HRQoL in Korean men. Methods: Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey conducted between 2013 and 2020 were analyzed. A total of 16,429 male participants aged ≥19 years completed the European Quality of Life-5 Dimensions (EQ-5D). Impaired HRQoL was defined as scoring in the lowest 20% of the EQ-5D index and having some or extreme problems in the following five domains of the EQ-5D: mobility, self-care, usual activities, pain/ discomfort, and anxiety/depression. Multiple logistic regression was conducted to evaluate the risk of impaired HRQoL in current tobacco users. Results: Current tobacco users exhibited a significantly higher risk of impaired HRQoL compared with never users (odds ratio [OR], 1.42; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05-1.92). Compared to never users, current tobacco users reported more problems with mobility and pain/discomfort (all P<0.05). Moreover, compared with former tobacco users, current tobacco users had a higher risk of impaired HRQoL (OR, 1.60; 95% CI, 1.18-2.17). Compared to former tobacco users, current tobacco users reported more problems with mobility and pain/discomfort (all P<0.05). Conclusion: Use of CCs and NNTPs is associated with impaired HRQoL in Korean men. Therefore, further interventions for lifestyle modification and smoking cessation treatments are required to reduce the risk of impaired HRQoL among current tobacco users.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to assess the survival outcomes of four versus six cycles of first-line platinum-based chemotherapy (PBCT) in the era of immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) for patients with advanced urothelial carcinoma (UC). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients with histologically confirmed advanced UC were allocated to either the 4-cycle PBCT (C4) or 6-cycle PBCT (C6) groups and retrospectively analyzed. After the planned cycles, active surveillance was conducted every 6-8 weeks, followed by second-line treatments, including ICIs, upon progression. The primary endpoint was overall survival (OS). RESULTS: Of the 161 patients initiated with PBCT between September 2016 and February 2023, 27 were deemed ineligible, leaving 134 patients for analysis (C4, n = 58; C6, n = 77). Baseline characteristics, including cisplatin eligibility, were similar between the groups. With a median follow-up of 23.7 months (95 % confidence interval (CI), 20.3-27.1), no significant difference was observed in OS between the C6 and C4 groups (18.7 months vs. 17.0 months; hazard ratio (HR) 1.27, P = 0.343). In multivariate analysis adjusted for sex, initial presentation, metastatic lesion, and ECOG PS, no significant difference was observed between the C6 and C4 groups (HR 1.29, 95 % CI, 0.78-2.14, P = 0.315). CONCLUSIONS: This study showed that four cycles of PBCT do not differ from six cycles regarding OS.

Background/Aims: A clinical unmet need persists for medications capable of modulating the progression of primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). This study aimed to assess the clinical feasibility of HK-660S (beta-lapachone) in PSC. Methods: In this multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group phase 2 trial, participants were assigned in a 2:1 ratio to receive either 100 mg of HK-660S or a placebo twice daily for 12 weeks. The primary outcomes were the reduction in serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) levels and the percentage of participants showing improvements in PSC severity, as determined by magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) with the Anali score. Secondary endpoints included changes in liver stiffness and adverse events. Results: The analysis included 21 patients, 15 receiving HK-660S, and six receiving a placebo. Improvements in the Anali score were observed in 13.3% of the HK-660S group, with no improvements in the placebo group. HK-660S treatment resulted in a 15.2% reduction in mean ALP levels, compared to a 6.6% reduction in the placebo group. A stratified ad-hoc analysis based on baseline ALP levels showed a statistically significant response in the HK-660S group among those with ALP levels greater than twice the upper limit of normal, with a 50% responder rate (p = 0.05). Additionally, 26.7% of the HK-660S group showed improvements in the enhanced liver fibrosis score, with no improvements in the placebo group. HK-660S was generally well-tolerated. Conclusions: HK-660S is well-tolerated among patients with PSC and may improve bile duct strictures, decrease serum ALP levels, and reduce liver fibrosis. (cris.nih.go.kr, Number KCT0006590).

Background: The liver plays an important role in gonadal steroid hormone metabolism, which can affect reproductive health, including the menstrual cycle. However, evidence from large population-based studies is limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between liver function markers and menstrual cycle irregularities in premenopausal Korean women using nationwide data. Methods: This study analyzed Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2010-2011. We investigated 3,045 premenopausal women aged 19-59 years. Liver function markers including serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), gamma-glutamyl transferase, and fatty liver index were analyzed. Multivariable logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between liver function markers and menstrual cycle irregularity while adjusting for confounding factors. Values were presented as odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Subgroup analysis was also performed. Results: Baseline characteristic analysis showed that approximately 14.4% of the study population experienced menstrual cycle irregularity. The mean age was 34.5±0.7 years. The highest quartile of serum ALT and AST levels showed significantly higher ORs for menstrual cycle irregularity (adjusted OR, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.26-2.64 and adjusted OR, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.17-2.39, respectively). A similar result was observed in the subgroup analysis. Conclusion: Liver function markers were positively associated with menstrual cycle irregularities. In clinical settings, women of reproductive age with relatively decreased liver function should be considered for regular followup of their reproductive health status.

Despite the various therapeutic benefits and high tolerance of orally administered silybin, poor water-solubility can be the main restrictive physicochemical feature, which results in low oral bioavailability in the absorption. A milk thistle nanocrystal formulation (HM40) was prepared using a modified wet-milling method. Comprehensive characterization was performed to determine the physical morphology, crystallinity, and physicochemical properties. The long-term stability was evaluated over 24 months. In vitro silybin release was assessed at pH 1.2 for 2 h, followed by pH 6.8 for 4 h. Finally, in vivo pharmacokinetic studies were conducted in rats and healthy human volunteers. HM40 exhibited a nanocrystal structure maintaining crystallinity and enhanced the solubility and dissolution of silybin compared to that of the raw material. The stability over 24 months revealed consistent surface morphology, particle size, silybin content, and solubility. In vitro release profiles indicated a significant increase in the silybin release from HM40. In vivo pharmacokinetic studies demonstrated that HM40 showed 2.61- and 1.51-fold higher oral bioavailability in rats and humans, respectively, than that of the reference capsule. HM40 formulation presents a stable and promising approach for the oral delivery of poorly water-soluble silybin, with the potential for use in pharmaceutical formulations containing milk thistle.

OBJECTIVE: The Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R) is a widely used self-report for assessing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), originally aligned with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM)-IV diagnostic criteria. This study aimed to evaluate the applicability of the IES-R under the DSM-5 guidelines and establish a cutoff point for DSM-5 PTSD diagnosis. METHODS: A total of 238 participants recruited from multiple psychiatric centers, including 67 patients with PTSD, 72 patients with psychiatric controls, and 99 healthy controls, were included in the study. All participants completed the Korean version of the Structured Clinical Interview for the DSM-5 research version to confirm the presence of PTSD, the Korean version of PTSD Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5), the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the Beck Anxiety Inventory, and the Spielberger State Trait Anxiety Inventory. RESULTS: The IES-R demonstrated good internal consistency and a high correlation with the PCL-5. Through factor analysis, 5 distinct dimensions emerged within the IES-R: sleep disturbance, intrusion, hyperarousal, avoidance, and numbness-dissociation. A proposed cutoff score of 25 on the IES-R was suggested for identifying patients with PTSD. CONCLUSION: These findings underscore the scale's concurrent validity with the DSM-5 PTSD criteria and its effectiveness as a screening tool. Implementing a cutoff score of 25 on the IES-R can enhance its utility in identifying DSM-5 PTSD cases.

Normal kidney development requires coordinated interactions between multiple progenitor cell lineages. The Foxd1+ stromal progenitors are critical for normal nephrogenesis and their heterogeneity is increasingly appreciated. However, the molecular mechanisms and trajectories that drive the differentiation of Foxd1+ cells toward the renal stroma, capsule, mesangial cells, renin cells, pericytes, and vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) are poorly understood. Recent work has implicated Tcf21, a mesoderm-specific bHLH transcription factor critical for embryogenesis, in the development of the kidney stroma and perivascular cells. To investigate the role of Tcf21 in Foxd1+ cells, we performed single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) on GFP+ cells from E14.5 Foxd1 Cre ;Rosa26 mTmG ;Tcf21 f/f kidneys ( Tcf21 -cKO) and Foxd1 Cre controls. Clustering of the entire dataset identified a large stromal population and a smaller representation of non-stromal lineages. Subclustering of stromal cells identified six populations associated with healthy kidney development: medullary/perivascular, proliferating, differentiating nephron, nephrogenic zone-associated, collecting duct-associated, and ureteric. Loss of Tcf21 resulted in a dramatic reduction in the medullary/perivascular, proliferating, nephrogenic zone-associated, and collecting duct-associated stromal subpopulations. Immunostaining confirmed that Tcf21 -cKO has a severe constriction of the medullary and collecting duct-associated stromal space. We identified and validated a cluster unique to Tcf21 -cKO kidneys exhibiting mosaic expression of genes from nephrogenic, proliferating, medullary, and perivascular stromal cells spanning across all pseudotime, suggesting cells halted in the midst of differentiation. These findings underscore a critical role for Tcf21 in the emergence of Foxd1+ derivatives, with loss of Tcf21 leading to a shift in stromal cell fates that results in abnormal kidney development. NEW & NOTEWORTHY: The mechanisms responsible for the emergence of renal stromal heterogeneity has been unknown. Using scRNA-seq on Foxd1+ enriched cells from E14.5 kidneys, we identified seven molecularly distinct stromal populations and their regional association. The data suggest that the transcription factor Tcf21 regulates the adoption of fates by Foxd1+ cells that is required to form the normal milieu of stromal derivatives for the development of a kidney of normal size and function.

van der Waals heterojunctions utilizing two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) materials have emerged as focal points in the field of optoelectronic devices, encompassing applications in light-emitting devices, photodetectors, solar cells, and beyond. In this study, we transferred few-atomic-layer films of compositionally graded ternary MoS2xTe2(1-x) alloys onto metal-organic chemical vapor deposition-grown molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) as p- and n-type structures, leading to the creation of a van der Waals vertical heterostructure. The characteristics of the fabricated MoS2xTe2(1-x)/MoS2 vertical-stacked heterojunction were investigated considering the influence of tellurium (Te) incorporation. The systematic variation of parameter x (i.e., 0.8, 0.6, 0.5, 0.3, and 0) allowed for an exploration of the impact of Te incorporation on the photovoltaic performance of these heterojunctions. As a result, the power conversion efficiency was enhanced by approximately 6 orders of magnitude with increasing Te concentration; notably, photoresponsivities as high as ∼6.4 A/W were achieved. These findings emphasize the potential for enhancing ultrathin solar energy conversion in heterojunctions based on 2D TMDs.

Nasal irrigation is crucial following endoscopic sinus surgery (ESS), especially for managing chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This study assessed the effectiveness of N-acetylcysteine (NAC) irrigation during the post-ESS period of patients with CRS without nasal polyposis. In this prospective, single-blind randomized controlled trial, 49 patients (NAC, n = 24; saline, n = 25) undergoing ESS were assigned to receive either NAC or saline irrigations twice daily for a month. The preoperative and postoperative assessments conducted included Lund-Macka (LM) and Lund-Kennedy (LK) endoscopic scores, the Nasal Obstruction Symptom Evaluation (NOSE) scale, and the Sino-Nasal Outcome Test-20 (SNOT-20). At 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months after the operation, endoscopic findings and symptoms were evaluated. Both groups showed no differences in age, sex, LM and LK scores, NOSE scale, and SNOT-20 preoperatively. In terms of the endoscopic findings regarding the sinonasal mucosa after ESS, the NAC group had slightly lower scores 2 weeks, 1 month, and 3 months after the operation, but this difference was not statistically significant. The NAC group showed significant improvement in VAS scores, namely, postnasal drip (1.0, p = 0.041), smell dysfunction (0.8, p = 0.003), and crust (1.5, p = 0.034), compared to the control group's scores of 2.6, 4.7, and 3.6, respectively, 2 weeks after the operation, although no significant differences were observed in VAS scores for any symptoms 1 and 3 months after the operation. NAC was well tolerated, and no adverse events were reported. NAC irrigation showed benefits over saline irrigation in terms of improving postnasal drip, smell dysfunction, and crust after ESS for CRS without nasal polyposis in the immediate postoperative period.

Background: Pirfenidone is an antifibrotic medication approved for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Fybro®, a generic version of pirfenidone developed in South Korea, gained approval and is available in 200 mg and in higher-dose formulations of 400 and 600 mg. This real-world prospective cohort study investigated the safety and effectiveness of Fybro®. Methods: A nationwide observational study was conducted in patients with IPF. Patients were followed up for 6 months, with a subset of patients being followed up for 12 months. Data on lung function and adverse events were collected. Patient adherence to fewer-pill (400 and/or 600 mg tablets) and multiple-pill (200 mg tablets) regimens were compared. Results: Of the 359 enrolled patients, 352 received pirfenidone (Fybro®) at least once and were included in the analysis. The mean age was 69.0 years and 82.4% of patients were male. The median treatment duration was 186.0 days. A total of 253 patients (71.9%) experienced adverse events, with decreased appetite being the most common (16.5%). The adjusted decline rates in lung function were -1.5% and -2.2% predicted per year for forced vital capacity and diffusing capacity, respectively. No significant differences were observed based on the pirfenidone dose. For a daily intake of 1,200 or 1800 mg of pirfenidone, a significantly longer duration of drug administration was observed with the fewer-pill regimen than with multiple-pill regimen. Conclusion: The safety and effectiveness of Fybro® observed in this real-world cohort study are consistent with previous studies. Using higher-strength tablets to reduce pill burden may improve medication adherence.

INTRODUCTION: Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) plays an indispensable role in treating pancreato-biliary diseases but carries a risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis (PEP). Despite advances in the prevention strategies, prevention of PEP remains imperfect, necessitating more refined hydration methods. This study investigates the effectiveness of lactated Ringer's solution versus plasma solution in preventing PEP. METHOD AND ANALYSIS: This multicentre, double-blind, randomised controlled trial, will be initiated by the investigator-sponsor, and conducted in three tertiary centres in South Korea. The aim of this study is to assess the effectiveness of hydration in preventing PEP in patients with naïve papillae. It will target patients with naïve papillae, focusing on those at medium to high risk of PEP. Patients aged ≤18 years and those with serious comorbidities, acute/chronic pancreatitis and various other medical conditions will be excluded. Eligible participants will be randomly assigned into two arms in equal numbers: (1) PEP prevention using lactated Ringer's solution and (2) PEP prevention using plasma solution. The primary outcome of this study will be the occurrence of PEP, and secondary outcomes will be additional risk factors and potential adverse events related to ERCP. With a total enrolment of 844 patients, the study will be able to detect significant differences between the intervention arms. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is obtained from each institution (Asan Medical Centre, 2023-0382; Seoul National University Hospital, H-2302-05-1404; Samsung Medical Centre, SMC 2023-02-001-009). All participants provided informed consent following clear explanation of the study procedures. The results of the study will be disseminated in peer-reviewed journals and research conferences. Characteristics of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) patients with superoptimal peak inspiratory flow rates (PIFR) has not been thoroughly investigated. This study aimed to compare the characteristics between COPD patients with superoptimal PIFR and those with optimal and sub-optimal PIFR. PIFR was measured using In-Check DIAL G16 and categorized into sub-optimal (PIFR lower than that required by the patient's device), optimal, and superoptimal (peak PIFR ≥ 90 L/min). Considering COPD patients with sub-optimal PIFR as the reference group, analyses were performed to identify PIFR-related factors. Subgroup analysis was performed according to the forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) % of the predicted value (%pred). Among 444 post-bronchodilator-confirmed COPD patients from seven tertiary hospitals in South Korea, 98, 223, and 123 were classified into the sub-optimal, optimal, and superoptimal PIFR groups, respectively. The superoptimal PIFR group were younger, had an increased proportion of males, a higher body mass index, lowest number of comorbidities and less frequent exacerbation in the previous year, as well as the highest forced vital capacity %pred. The adjusted odds ratio for frequent exacerbation in the previous year was lower in the superoptimal PIFR group than in the sub-optimal PIFR group and was more pronounced in patients with an FEV1%pred of < 70%. COPD patients with superoptimal PIFR have clinical characteristics different from those patients with the sub-optimal and optimal PIFR. Having a high inspiratory flow may be a favorable trait in COPD.

The resolution of Si complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (C-MOSFET) image sensors (CISs) has been intensively enhanced to follow the technological revolution of smartphones, AI devices, autonomous cars, robots, and drones, approaching the physical and material limits of a resolution increase in conventional Si CISs because of the low quantum efficiency (i.e., ~40%) and aperture ratio (i.e., ~60%). As a novel solution, a hybrid organic-Si image sensor was developed by implementing B, G, and R organic photodiodes on four n-MOSFETs for photocurrent sensing. Photosensitive organic donor and acceptor materials were designed with cost-effective small molecules, i.e., the B, G, and R donor and acceptor small molecules were Coumarin6 and C_60, DMQA and MePTC, and ZnPc and TiOPc, respectively. The output voltage sensing margins (i.e., photocurrent signal difference) of the hybrid organic-Si B, G, and R image sensor pixels presented results 17, 11, and 37% higher than those of conventional Si CISs. In addition, the hybrid organic-Si B, G, and R image sensor pixels could achieve an ideal aperture ratio (i.e., ~100%) compared with a Si CIS pixel using the backside illumination process (i.e., ~60%). Moreover, they may display a lower fabrication cost than image sensors because of the simple image sensor structure (i.e., hybrid organic-Si photodiode with four n-MOSFETs).

Background: Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammatory disease affecting more than 10% of the global adult population. It is classified into Th1, Th2, and Th17 endotypes and eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic types. Th2-based inflammation and eosinophilic CRS (ECRS) are associated with tissue remodeling and fibrinolytic system impairment. Objective: To elucidate the role of eosinophils in inducing fibrin deposition in CRS nasal polyp tissues and explore potential regulatory mechanisms. Methods: We analyzed the expression of genes related to the serpin family and fibrinolytic system using Gene Expression Omnibus and Next-generation sequencing data. Differentially expression genes (DEGs) analysis was used to compare control and nasal polyp tissues, followed by KEGG and Gene ontology (GO) analysis. We measured the expression and correlation of plasminogen activator-1 (PAI-1), tissue plasminogen activator (t-PA), urokinase plasminogen activator (u-PA), and urokinase plasminogen activator surface receptor (u-PAR) in CRS tissues, and evaluated the effect of eosinophils on the fibrinolytic system using a cytokine array and co-culture. Results: Nasal polyp tissues showed upregulated PAI-1, u-PA, and u-PAR expression and downregulated t-PA expression. Fibrinolytic system-related genes positively correlated with Th2 cytokines, except for t-PA. Eosinophil-derived Chitinase-3-like protein 1 (CHI3L1) increased PAI-1 expression and decreased t-PA levels in fibroblasts and epithelial cells. The inhibition of CHI3L1 suppresses these alterations. Conclusion: CHI3L1 contributes to fibrin deposition by impairing the fibrinolytic system during nasal polyp formation. The regulation of CHI3L1 expression may inhibit fibrin deposition and edema in ECRS, presenting a potential treatment for this condition.

The devastating effects of COVID-19 have highlighted the importance of prophylactic and therapeutic strategies to combat respiratory diseases. Stimulator of interferon gene (STING) is an essential component of the host defense mechanisms against respiratory viral infections. Although the role of the cGAS/STING signaling axis in the innate immune response to DNA viruses has been thoroughly characterized, mounting evidence shows that it also plays a key role in the prevention of RNA virus infections. In this study, we investigated the role of STING activation during Influenza virus (IFV) infection. In both mouse bone marrow-derived macrophages and monocytic cell line THP-1 differentiated with PMA, we found that dimeric amidobenzimidazole (diABZI), a STING agonist, had substantial anti-IFV activity against multiple strains of IFV, including A/H1N1, A/H3N2, B/Yamagata, and B/Victoria. On the other hand, a pharmacological antagonist of STING (H-151) or the loss of STING in human macrophages leads to enhanced viral replication but suppressed IFN expression. Furthermore, diABZI was antiviral against IFV in primary air-liquid interface cultures of nasal epithelial cells. Our data suggest that STING agonists may serve as promising therapeutic antiviral agents to combat IFV.

Analysis of the heavy fractions in crude oil has been important in petroleum industries. It is well known that heavy fractions such as vacuum gas oils (VGOs) include heteroatoms, of which sulfur and nitrogen are often characterized in many cases. We conducted research regarding the molecular species analysis of VGOs. Further refine processes using VGOs are becoming important when considering carbon recycling. In this work, we attempted to classify compounds within VGOs provided by Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research. Two VGOs were priorly distillated from Kuwait Export crude and Lower Fars crude. Quantitative analysis was performed mainly using matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS). MALDI-TOF-MS has been developed for analyzing high-molecular-weight compounds such as polymer and biopolymers. As matrix selection is one of the most important aspects in MALDI-TOFMS, the careful selection of a matrix was firstly evaluated, followed by analysis using a Kendrick plot with nominal mass series (z*). The objective was to evaluate if this work could provide an effective classification of VGOs compounds. The Kendrick plot is a well-known method for processing mass data. The difference in the Kendrick mass defect (KMD) between CnH2n-14S and CnH2n-20O is only 0.0005 mass units, which makes it difficult in general to distinguish these compounds. However, since the z* value showed effective differences during the classification of these compounds, qualitative analysis could be possible. The analysis using nominal mass series showed the potential to be used as an effective method in analyzing heavy fractions.

This study determined whether compared to conventional mechanical ventilation (MV), extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) is associated with decreased hospital mortality or fibrotic changes in patients with COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome. A cohort of 72 patients treated with ECMO and 390 with conventional MV were analyzed (February 2020-December 2021). A target trial was emulated comparing the treatment strategies of initiating ECMO vs no ECMO within 7 days of MV in patients with a PaO2/FiO2 < 80 or a PaCO2 ≥ 60 mmHg. A total of 222 patients met the eligibility criteria for the emulated trial, among whom 42 initiated ECMO. ECMO was associated with a lower risk of hospital mortality (hazard ratio [HR], 0.56; 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.36-0.96). The risk was lower in patients who were younger (age < 70 years), had less comorbidities (Charlson comorbidity index < 2), underwent prone positioning before ECMO, and had driving pressures ≥ 15 cmH2O at inclusion. Furthermore, ECMO was associated with a lower risk of fibrotic changes (HR, 0.30; 95% CI 0.11-0.70). However, the finding was limited due to relatively small number of patients and differences in observability between the ECMO and conventional MV groups.

This study assessed variations in demersal fish assemblages with respect to the study site and water depth. Seasonal samplings from May 2018 to March 2019 were conducted along the northern (Ayajin, Goseong) and southern (Hupo, Uljin) sites of the East Sea off the Korean coast, using commercial gill nets. Samples were collected at depths of ~50, ~80, ~150 m across the study sites, with concurrent monitoring of water column structures. A total of 73 species and 6250 specimens were collected. Distinctive fish species compositions were observed according to the study site and depth. Although Glyptocephalus stelleri was the most abundant fish species in both Ayajin and Hupo, Gadus macrocephalus, Icelus cataphractus, and Alcichthys elongatus were most predominant in Ayajin, whereas Cleisthenes pinetorum, Hippoglossoides dubius, and Gymnocanthus herzensteini were more prevalent in Hupo. In terms of depth layer, in Ayajin, G. stelleri dominated in both intermediate and deeper layers, with Hemilepidotus gilberti, A. elongatus, Enophrys diceraus common in shallower depths. Conversely, in Hupo, G. stelleri, C. pinetorum, and A. nadeshnyi dominated across all depth layers, whereas Dasycottus setiger and G. herzensteini dominated in deeper and shallower depths, respectively. Significant influences of the study site and water depth on fish assemblage structures were observed due to variations in water temperature at the seasonal thermocline boundary.
