BACKGROUND: Canine mammary gland cancer (CMGC) is a common neoplasm in intact bitches. However, the benefit of adjuvant chemotherapy is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the anti-proliferative effects of paclitaxel on CMGC in in-vitro and in-vivo settings. RESULTS: Paclitaxel dose-dependently inhibited viability and induced G2/M phase cell cycle arrest and apoptosis in both primary and metastatic CMGC cell lines (CIPp and CIPm). In animal experiments, the average tumour volume decreased significantly in proportion to the administered oral paclitaxel dose. By examining tumour tissue using a TUNEL assay and immunohistochemical staining with anti-CD31 as a marker of endothelial differentiation, respectively, it was confirmed that oral paclitaxel induced apoptosis and exerted an anti-angiogenetic effect in tumour tissues. Further, downregulation of cyclin D1 in tumour tissues suggested that oral paclitaxel induced cell cycle arrest in tumour tissues in-vivo. CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest that paclitaxel may have anti-cancer effects on CMGC through cell cycle arrest, induction of apoptosis, and anti-angiogenesis. This study could provide a novel approach to treat CMGC.

Heartworm (HW) disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, is a life-threatening ailment in dogs. HW disrupts blood flow and decreases cardiac output (CO). The accurate monitoring of CO during HW extraction is pivotal for patient survival and overall health. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the efficacy of using impedance cardiography (ICG) as a non-invasive approach for monitoring CO during interventional HW extraction. METHODS: Two cases of HW infections were treated via surgical extraction. The CO and mean arterial pressure (MAP) were monitored using the ICG technique during the anesthesia stabilization, extraction process, and post-extraction phases. RESULTS: In Case 1, the CO increased by 115% post-procedure, and in Case 2, the CO increased by 116%. In contrast, the MAP varied between the two cases. The ICG method provided real-time CO data without major disruptions during the extraction surgery. CONCLUSION: The ICG technique for CO monitoring during interventional HW extractions is effective.

Background and Objectives: 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) (PETFDG) image can visualize neuronal injury of the brain in Alzheimer's disease. Early-phase amyloid PET image is reported to be similar to PETFDG image. This study aimed to generate PETFDG images from 18F-florbetaben PET (PETFBB) images using a generative adversarial network (GAN) and compare the generated PETFDG (PETGE-FDG) with real PETFDG (PETRE-FDG) images using the structural similarity index measure (SSIM) and the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR). Materials and Methods: Using the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) database, 110 participants with both PETFDG and PETFBB images at baseline were included. The paired PETFDG and PETFBB images included six and four subset images, respectively. Each subset image had a 5 min acquisition time. These subsets were randomly sampled and divided into 249 paired PETFDG and PETFBB subset images for the training datasets and 95 paired subset images for the validation datasets during the deep-learning process. The deep learning model used in this study is composed of a GAN with a U-Net. The differences in the SSIM and PSNR values between the PETGE-FDG and PETRE-FDG images in the cycleGAN and pix2pix models were evaluated using the independent Student's t-test. Statistical significance was set at p ≤ 0.05. Results: The participant demographics (age, sex, or diagnosis) showed no statistically significant differences between the training (82 participants) and validation (28 participants) groups. The mean SSIM between the PETGE-FDG and PETRE-FDG images was 0.768 ± 0.135 for the cycleGAN model and 0.745 ± 0.143 for the pix2pix model. The mean PSNR was 32.4 ± 9.5 and 30.7 ± 8.0. The PETGE-FDG images of the cycleGAN model showed statistically higher mean SSIM than those of the pix2pix model (p < 0.001). The mean PSNR was also higher in the PETGE-FDG images of the cycleGAN model than those of pix2pix model (p < 0.001). Conclusions: We generated PETFDG images from PETFBB images using deep learning. The cycleGAN model generated PETGE-FDG images with a higher SSIM and PSNR values than the pix2pix model. Image-to-image translation using deep learning may be useful for generating PETFDG images. These may provide additional information for the management of Alzheimer's disease without extra image acquisition and the consequent increase in radiation exposure, inconvenience, or expenses.

ABSTRACT: We describe a case of adenomyosis that reduced in size in a patient with lymphoma on receiving chemotherapy. A 48-year-old woman with worsening left flank pain was diagnosed with follicular lymphoma. [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT revealed multiple hypermetabolic lymph nodes in the bilateral cervical, axillary, mediastinal, mesenteric, retroperitoneal, iliac, and inguinal regions. In addition, adenomyosis with mild hypermetabolism was demonstrated on [ 18 F]FDG PET/CT. The size and metabolism of adenomyosis decreased after chemotherapy with R-bendamustine; in addition, along with decrease in estradiol levels, the patient experienced amenorrhea and hot flushes. The patient was diagnosed with chemotherapy-induced early menopause.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the diagnostic performance of chest computed tomography (CT)-based qualitative and radiomics models for predicting residual axillary nodal metastasis after neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) for patients with clinically node-positive breast cancer. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study included 226 women (mean age, 51.4 years) with clinically node-positive breast cancer treated with NAC followed by surgery between January 2015 and July 2021. Patients were randomly divided into the training and test sets (4:1 ratio). The following predictive models were built: a qualitative CT feature model using logistic regression based on qualitative imaging features of axillary nodes from the pooled data obtained using the visual interpretations of three radiologists; three radiomics models using radiomics features from three (intranodal, perinodal, and combined) different regions of interest (ROIs) delineated on pre-NAC CT and post-NAC CT using a gradient-boosting classifier; and fusion models integrating clinicopathologic factors with the qualitative CT feature model (referred to as clinical-qualitative CT feature models) or with the combined ROI radiomics model (referred to as clinical-radiomics models). The area under the curve (AUC) was used to assess and compare the model performance. RESULTS: Clinical N stage, biological subtype, and primary tumor response indicated by imaging were associated with residual nodal metastasis during the multivariable analysis (all P < 0.05). The AUCs of the qualitative CT feature model and radiomics models (intranodal, perinodal, and combined ROI models) according to post-NAC CT were 0.642, 0.812, 0.762, and 0.832, respectively. The AUCs of the clinical-qualitative CT feature model and clinical-radiomics model according to post-NAC CT were 0.740 and 0.866, respectively. CONCLUSION: CT-based predictive models showed good diagnostic performance for predicting residual nodal metastasis after NAC. Quantitative radiomics analysis may provide a higher level of performance than qualitative CT features models. Larger multicenter studies should be conducted to confirm their performance.

Background and Objectives: The optimal assessment of cognitive function, including the impact of education, is crucial in managing Alzheimer's disease (AD). This study aimed to evaluate the role of cognitive reserve (CR), represented by the metabolic status of regions of the cerebral cortex, to evaluate cognitive decline considering the educational attainment of patients with AD. Materials and Methods: We used data from the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative database, and selected 124 patients who underwent both baseline F-18 fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and F-18 florbetaben (FBB) positron emission tomography (PET) scans. Demographics, cognitive function variables (Clinical Dementia Rating-Sum of Boxes [CDR]; AD Assessment Scale 11/13 [ADAS11/13] Mini-Mental State Examination [MMSE]), and the average standardized uptake value ratio (SUVR) of cerebral cortex regions to those of the cerebellum were obtained from the data. The participants' education level was divided into low and high education subgroups using four cut-offs of 12, 14, 16, and 18 years of educational attainment (G12, G14, G16, and G18, respectively). Demographic and cognitive function variables were compared between the two subgroups in each of the four groups, and their correlations with the SUVRs were evaluated. Results: There was no significant difference between the high and low education subgroups in each of the four groups, except for ADAS11/13 and MMSE in G14 and age in G16. The SUVRs of FDG PET (FDGSUVR) were significantly correlated with CDR, ADAS11/13, and MMSE scores. FDGSUVR showed different trajectories of neurodegeneration between the low and high education groups. Conclusions: FDGSUVR correlated moderately but significantly with neuropsychological test results, without being influenced by education level. Therefore, FDG PET may reflect CR independent of education level, and therefore could be a reliable tool to evaluate cognitive decline in AD.

The biogenesis and biological roles of extracellular vesicles (EVs) in the progression of liver diseases have attracted considerable attention in recent years. EVs are membrane-bound nanosized vesicles found in different types of body fluids and contain various bioactive materials, including proteins, lipids, nucleic acids, and mitochondrial DNA. Based on their origin and biogenesis, EVs can be classified as apoptotic bodies, microvesicles, and exosomes. Among these, exosomes are the smallest EVs (30-150 nm in diameter), which play a significant role in cell-to-cell communication and epigenetic regulation. Moreover, exosomal content analysis can reveal the functional state of the parental cell. Therefore, exosomes can be applied to various purposes, including disease diagnosis and treatment, drug delivery, cell-free vaccines, and regenerative medicine. However, exosome-related research faces two major limitations: isolation of exosomes with high yield and purity and distinction of exosomes from other EVs (especially microvesicles). No standardized exosome isolation method has been established to date; however, various exosome isolation strategies have been proposed to investigate their biological roles. Exosome-mediated intercellular communications are known to be involved in alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease development. Damaged hepatocytes or nonparenchymal cells release large numbers of exosomes that promote the progression of inflammation and fibrogenesis through interactions with neighboring cells. Exosomes are expected to provide insight on the progression of liver disease. Here, we review the biogenesis of exosomes, exosome isolation techniques, and biological roles of exosomes in alcoholic liver disease and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.

The objective was to determine the effects of drying and blanching methods on the nutrient utilization of black soldier fly larva (BSFL; Hermetia illucens) meal by pigs using in vitro assays. Two-step and three-step in vitro assays were employed to simulate the gastrointestinal tract of pigs. Four BSFL meals were prepared using the following pretreatment methods: (1) microwave drying at 80 °C for 32 min, (2) hot-air drying at 60 °C for 17 h, (3) blanching for 5 min in boiling water and hot-air drying at 60 °C for 17 h, and (4) 2% citric acid solution blanching for 5 min in boiling solution and hot-air drying at 60 °C for 17 h. After the drying process, each BSFL was defatted and ground to obtain BSFL meals. The nitrogen (N) concentration in the test ingredients ranged from 8.5 to 9.4%, and the ether extract ranged from 6.9 to 11.5% on an as-is basis. The amino acid (AA) concentration in the BSFL meals ranged from 2.80 to 3.24% for Lys and 0.71 to 0.89% for Met on an as-is basis. Hot-air-dried BSFL meal had a greater in vitro ileal disappearance (IVID) of N compared with microwave-dried BSFL meal (p < 0.05). However, blanched BSFL meals in water or 2% citric acid solution before hot-air drying had a lower (p < 0.05) IVID of N compared with microwave-dried or hot-air-dried BSFL meal. Blanched BSFL meals in water or 2% citric acid solution before hot-air drying showed a lower (p < 0.05) in vitro total tract disappearance of dry matter and organic matter compared with microwave-dried or hot-air-dried BSFL meal. Microwave-dried BSFL meal had a lower (p < 0.05) IVID of indispensable AA, except for His, Lys, Met, and Phe, compared with hot-air-dried BSFL meals. However, blanched BSFL meals in water or 2% citric acid solution before hot-air drying showed a lower (p < 0.05) IVID of indispensable AA compared with microwave-dried or hot-air-dried BSFL meal. In conclusion, hot-air-dried BSFL meal presented greater nutrient utilization compared with microwave-dried BSFL meal for pigs. However, blanching in water or citric acid solution negatively affected the nutrient digestibility of BSFL meal based on in vitro assays.

The automated segmentation and tracking of macrophages during their migration are challenging tasks due to their dynamically changing shapes and motions. This paper proposes a new algorithm to achieve automatic cell tracking in time-lapse microscopy macrophage data. First, we design a segmentation method employing space-time filtering, local Otsu's thresholding, and the SUBSURF (subjective surface segmentation) method. Next, the partial trajectories for cells overlapping in the temporal direction are extracted in the segmented images. Finally, the extracted trajectories are linked by considering their direction of movement. The segmented images and the obtained trajectories from the proposed method are compared with those of the semi-automatic segmentation and manual tracking. The proposed tracking achieved 97.4% of accuracy for macrophage data under challenging situations, feeble fluorescent intensity, irregular shapes, and motion of macrophages. We expect that the automatically extracted trajectories of macrophages can provide pieces of evidence of how macrophages migrate depending on their polarization modes in the situation, such as during wound healing.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Binge drinking in patients with metabolic syndrome accelerates the development of alcohol-associated liver disease. However, the underlying mechanisms remain elusive. We investigated if oxidative and nonoxidative alcohol metabolism pathways, diet-induced obesity, and adipose tissues influenced the development of acute liver injury in a single ethanol binge model. METHODS: A single ethanol binge was administered to chow-fed or high-fat diet (HFD)-fed wild-type and genetically modified mice. RESULTS: Oral administration of a single dose of ethanol induced acute liver injury and hepatic endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress in chow- or HFD-fed mice. Disruption of the Adh1 gene increased blood ethanol concentration and exacerbated acute ethanol-induced ER stress and liver injury in both chow-fed and HFD-fed mice, while disruption of the Aldh2 gene did not affect such hepatic injury despite high blood acetaldehyde levels. Mechanistic studies showed that alcohol, not acetaldehyde, promoted hepatic ER stress, fatty acid synthesis, and increased adipocyte death and lipolysis, contributing to acute liver injury. Increased serum fatty acid ethyl esters (FAEEs), which are formed by an enzyme-mediated esterification of ethanol with fatty acids, were detected in mice after ethanol gavage, with higher levels in Adh1 knockout mice than in wild-type mice. Deletion of the Ces1d gene in mice markedly reduced the acute ethanol-induced increase of blood FAEE levels with a slight but significant reduction of serum aminotransferase levels. CONCLUSIONS: Ethanol and its nonoxidative metabolites, FAEEs, not acetaldehyde, promoted acute alcohol-induced liver injury by inducing ER stress, adipocyte death, and lipolysis.

This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of three different copper (Cu) sources (one inorganic and two organics) and levels (0, 50, and 100 mg/kg) on the growth performance, Cu digestibility, fecal mineral excretion, serum mineral concentration, jejunal morphology, and serum biochemical profile of growing pigs. A total of 42 male, growing pigs (31.08 ± 1.82 kg) were randomly assigned to seven treatments consisting of one negative control (0 mg/kg of added Cu level) and treatments with copper sulfate (CuSO4), Cu-amino acid complex (CuAA), and Cu-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoate chelate complex (CuHMB) at 50 and 100 mg/kg each for 28 d. Pigs fed 50 or 100 mg/kg of Cu showed improved (p < 0.05) average daily gain and feed intake. Although Cu excretion decreased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed 100 mg/kg of organic Cu sources compared to those fed CuSO4, there was no difference between the Cu sources in pigs fed 50 mg/kg. However, the apparent total tract digestibility of Cu increased (p < 0.01) in pigs fed organic Cu sources compared with that in pigs fed CuSO4. The addition of CuHMB increased (p < 0.01) serum phosphorus and sulfur concentrations; however, there were no effects of source and level on jejunal morphology and serum biochemical profile. These results suggest that the inclusion (50 mg/kg) of organic Cu sources (CuAA and CuHMB) in the growing pig diet could be beneficial for growth performance and Cu availability and may reduce environmental pollution.

In response to wound signals, macrophages are immediately recruited to the injury where they acquire distinct phenotypes and functions, playing crucial roles both in host defense and healing process. Although macrophage phenotypes have been intensively studied during wound healing, mostly using markers and expression profiles, the impact of the wound environment on macrophage shape and behaviour, and the underlying mechanisms deserve more in-depth investigation. Here, we sought to characterize the dynamics of macrophage recruitment and behaviour during aseptic wounding of the caudal fin fold of the zebrafish larva. Using a photo-conversion approach, we demonstrated that macrophages are recruited to the wounded fin fold as a single wave where they switch their phenotype. Intravital imaging of macrophage shape and trajectories revealed that wound-macrophages display a highly stereotypical set of behaviours and change their shape from amoeboid to elongated shape as wound healing proceeds. Using a pharmacological inhibitor of 15-lipoxygenase and protectin D1, a specialized pro-resolving lipid, we investigated the role of polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism in macrophage behaviour. While inhibition of 15-lipoxygenase using PD146176 or Nordihydroguaiaretic acid (NDGA) decreases the switch from amoeboid to elongated shape, protectin D1 accelerates macrophage reverse migration and favours elongated morphologies. Altogether, our findings suggest that individual macrophages at the wound switch their phenotype leading to important changes in behaviour and shape to adapt to changing environment, and highlight the crucial role of lipid metabolism in the control of macrophage behaviour plasticity during inflammation in vivo.

Background: Poria cocos (PC), a fungus, has been used for more than 2000 years as a food and medicine in China. PC and its components have various pharmacological effects on the skin, including immunomodulatory activities, barrier function improvement, and anti-tumor effects. However, the effect of PC in aquaporin-3 (AQP3) expression, which is essential for epidermal water permeability barrier maintenance, was not reported. Methods: This study examined the mechanism through which the ethanol extract of the sclerotium of PC (EPC) promoted the expression of AQP3 in cultured human keratinocytes. Western blotting was used to investigate the expression of AQPs and the activation of phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt-related signaling molecules in HaCaT cells. Cells were treated with inhibitors of PI3K/Akt and mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR) prior to EPC treatment. Results: EPC promoted the expression of AQP3 in HaCaT cells without affecting AQP1 and AQP2 expression. Phosphorylated Akt levels were increased by EPC treatment, and the inhibition of PI3K by LY2940002 resulted in a reduction in EPC-induced AQP3 expression. Furthermore, EPC stimulated the phosphorylation of p70S6K and AktSer473, which are downstream targets of mTORC1 and mTORC2, respectively. The mTOR complex inhibitors, rapamycin and Torin 1, partially reduced EPC-induced AQP3 expression. Conclusion: These results suggest that EPC increased expression of AQP3, which is important for skin moisturization, by activating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway in human keratinocytes.

In this study, we investigated the residual properties of tebuconazole-treated pigs. Twentypigs were treated with different concentrations (0.25, 1.25, 2.5, 12.5, and 25 mg/kg bw/d) of tebuconazole for 28 d. Blood biochemistry, histology, and residual levels were analyzed using the VetTest analyzer, Masson's trichrome staining kit, and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, respectively. The final body weights were not significantly different between the control and treatment groups. Alkaline phosphatase, blood urea nitrogen, cholesterol, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase levels were significantly different from those of the control after exposure for 14 d. However, alanine aminotransferase levels showed changes only after exposure to pesticides for 28 d. The biochemical parameters were separated during the experimental period (14 d versus 28 d) by principal component analysis. Based on variable importance plots, blood urea nitrogen/creatinine ratio, blood urea nitrogen, glucose, and gamma-glutamyl transpeptidase are candidate biomarkers for tebuconazole exposure. The residual levels were observed at T4 (12.5 mg/kg bw/d) and T5 (25 mg/kg bw/d) in the liver and fat tissues, respectively. Fibrosis increased in the liver, kidney, and fat tissues, depending on the tebuconazole concentration. In conclusion, the residue limits of tebuconazole and the physiological changes caused by dietary tebuconazole in pigs provide important information for establishing maximum residue limits of pork and pork products.

Background and Objectives: Unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures require surgical management as they can result in neurological deficits if left untreated. This study aimed to evaluate whether a new bone scan scoring system could accurately assess instability in thoracolumbar burst fractures. Materials and Methods: Fifty-two patients with thoracolumbar burst fractures who underwent bone scans and magnetic resonance imaging prior to surgery between January 2015 and August 2017 at Ulsan University Hospital were selected for inclusion. Instability was determined by clinical assessment and imaging, and the Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score was determined. Bone scans were visually evaluated using a new bone scan scoring system. Bone scan findings of vertebral body (BB) and posterior column (BP) were scored separately and were summed to produce BTS {BTS (total score) = BB (body score, 5 points) + BP (posterior score, 2 points)}. The diagnostic performance of the scoring system for identifying unstable then thoracolumbar burst fractures were assessed. Results: Of the 52 thoracolumbar burst fractures, 34 (65.4%) were unstable and 31 (59.6%) had a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5. The diagnostic performance of using BTS ≥ 4 to identify unstable thoracolumbar burst fractures and those with a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5 was as follows: sensitivity, 61.8% and 58.1%; specificity, 94.4% and 81.0%; positive predictive value, 95.5% and 81.8%; and negative predictive value, 56.7% and 56.7%, respectively. Conclusions: The proposed bone scan scoring system has a high specificity and positive predictive value for identifying thoracolumbar burst fractures that are unstable or have a Thoracolumbar Injury Classification and Severity score ≥ 5. This scoring system may help to inform decisions regarding surgical management.

Excessive alcohol consumption contributes to a broad clinical spectrum of liver diseases, from simple steatosis to end-stage hepatocellular carcinoma. The liver is the primary organ that metabolizes ingested alcohol and is exquisitely sensitive to alcohol intake. Alcohol metabolism is classified into two pathways: oxidative and non-oxidative alcohol metabolism. Both oxidative and non-oxidative alcohol metabolisms and their metabolites have toxic consequences for multiple organs, including the liver, adipose tissue, intestine, and pancreas. Although many studies have focused on the effects of oxidative alcohol metabolites on liver damage, the importance of non-oxidative alcohol metabolites in cellular damage has also been discovered. Furthermore, extrahepatic alcohol effects are crucial for providing additional information necessary for the progression of alcoholic liver disease. Therefore, studying the effects of alcohol-producing metabolites and interorgan crosstalk between the liver and peripheral organs that express ethanol-metabolizing enzymes will facilitate a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of alcoholic liver disease. This review focuses on alcohol-metabolite-associated hepatotoxicity due to oxidative and non-oxidative alcohol metabolites and the role of interorgan crosstalk in alcoholic liver disease pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to introduce our robotic technique, which can minimize dissection extent using the da Vinci SP robotic system via hairline incision. METHODS: Forty patients underwent robotic thyroidectomy using the da Vinci SP robotic system via a hairline incision between February 2020 and April 2021 at Ulsan University Hospital. All procedures were performed successfully by one surgeon using the SP robotic system. RESULTS: Hemithyroidectomies were performed in 32 patients and total thyroidectomies in eight patients. Central neck dissection was performed in 32 patients. The overall mean operative time was 140.2 ± 50.7 min, and the mean console time was 74.0 ± 42.7 min. All patients were discharged on the second or third day after operation without any complications. CONCLUSIONS: Robotic thyroidectomy using the SP robotic system via hairline incision is technically feasible and safe, with a shorter incision length when compared with that of the Xi system.

Background and Objectives: Extranodal marginal zone lymphoma of the mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) type is the most common subtype of the ocular adnexal lymphoma. Despite its excellent prognosis, some patients experience partial remission or progressive disease. We aimed to evaluate clinicopathologic differences in the treatment responder group by comparing complete remission (CR) and non-complete remission (non-CR). Materials and Methods: This study retrospectively reviewed 48 patients who were diagnosed with ocular adnexal MALT lymphoma at Ulsan University Hospital between March 2002 and August 2018. Patients who were followed up for less than 6 months were excluded. Histologic and clinical features were analyzed. The patients were divided into two groups: CR and non-CR. Results: Among the 48 patients, 33 achieved CR and 15 achieved non-CR during the median follow-up period of 40.00 months (range, 7-109 months). In univariable analysis, more patients tend to undergo treatment in the CR group, and post-radiotherapy (post-RT) SUVmax, PET and serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were higher in the non-CR group (p = 0.043, p = 0.016, and p = 0.042, respectively). In a multivariable analysis, only application of treatment, including radiotherapy or chemotherapy with immunotherapy, was related to CR (odd ratio 7.301, 95% confidence interval 1.273-41.862, p = 0.026). In subgroup analysis according to the site of involvement, none of the variables were significant except for the post-RT SUVmax of PET and level of serum LDH in the non-conjunctiva group (p = 0.026, and p = 0.037, respectively). Seven (14.6%) patients had a recurrence, and those with a recurring site other than the primary site had a higher Ki-67 labeling index, although it was not statistically significant (9.56% vs. 18.00%, p = 0.095). Conclusions: Although belonging to the early stages, the non-CR rate was high in patients with high serum LDH levels, and recurred patients had higher Ki-67. Thus, considering active treatment is recommended in this group of patients.

We examined whether 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose metabolism is associated with distant relapse-free survival (DRFS) and overall survival (OS) in women with estrogen receptor (ER)-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer. This was a cohort study examining the risk factors for survival that had occurred at the start of the study. A cohort from Asan Medical Center, Korea, recruited between November 2007 and December 2014, was included. Patients received anthracycline-based neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) was measured. The analysis included 466 women. The median (interquartile range) follow-up period without distant metastasis or death was 6.2 (5.3-7.6) years. Multivariable analysis of hazard ratio (95% confidence interval [CI]) showed that the middle and high tertiles of SUV were prognostic for DRFS (2.93, 95% CI 1.62-5.30; P < 0.001) and OS (4.87, 95% CI 1.94-12.26; P < 0.001). The 8-year DRFS rates were 90.7% (95% CI 85.5-96.1%) for those in the low tertile of maximum SUV vs. 73.7% (95% CI 68.0-79.8%) for those in the middle and high tertiles of maximum SUV. 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose PET/CT may assess the risk of distant metastasis and death in ER-positive, HER2-negative patients.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine whether dietary black soldier fly (Hermetia illucens, HI) larvae oil (HILO) could serve as an alternative fat source to soybean oil (SBO) in laying hen diets. METHODS: We randomly assigned 25-week-old Hy-line Brown laying hens (n = 144) to receive (n = 6 hens/group; eight replicates) a control or an experimental diet in which SBO was replaced with 50% (50HILO) or 100% HILO (100HILO). RESULTS: Dietary HILO did not negatively affect body weight or productive performance during the study. The eggs also had similar quality parameters, proximate composition, and cholesterol levels. However, the yolk color index was significantly higher (p<0.01) in the 100HILO than in the other groups. Dietary HILO significantly altered the composition of fatty acids (FAs) in abdominal fat and eggs. Total saturated fatty acids (SFAs) and total polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) were significantly increased and decreased in the 50HILO and 100HILO groups, respectively, compared with those in the control group (p<0.001 and p<0.0001, respectively). Specifically, the medium-chain FAs lauric and myristic acids were remarkably increased in the abdominal fat of laying hens fed HILO (p<0.0001), whereas only myristic acid increased in eggs (p<0.0001). Undesirable heavy metal (aluminum, fluorine, arsenic, lead, mercury, and cadmium) concentrations were below permissible limits in eggs. CONCLUSION: We considered that HILO could be an alternative dietary fat to SBO for laying hens with maintained productive performance and good egg quality.
