RESUMEN

Mesoporous materials can play a pivotal role as a host material for delivery application to a specific part of a system. In this work we explore the selective adsorption and release of cationic organic dye molecules such as safranine T (ST) and malachite green (MG) on mesoporous borosilicate materials. The mesoporous silica SBA-15 and borosilicate materials (MBS) were prepared using non-ionic surfactant Pluronic P123 as template via evaporation induced self-assembly (EISA) method. After template removal the materials show high surface areas and in some cases ordered mesopores of dimensions ca. 6-7 nm. High surface area, mesoporosity and the presence of heteroatom (boron) help this mesoporous borosilicate material to adsorb high amount of cationic dye molecules at its surface from the respective aqueous solutions. Furthermore, the mesoporous borosilicate samples containing higher percentage adsorbed dyes show excellent release of ST or MG dye in simulated body fluid (SBF) solution at physiological pH=7.4 and temperature 310 K. The adsorption and release efficiency of mesoporous borosilicate samples are compared with reference boron-free mesoporous pure silica material to understand the nature of adsorbate-adsorbent interaction at the surfaces.

RESUMEN

New wormhole-like mesoporous TiO(2) material has been synthesized through a convenient sol-gel method in the presence of a Schiff base secondary amine hexadecyl-2-pyrrole-methylamine (HPMA) containing chelating donor sites as template or structure directing agent (SDA). SDA molecules can be easily removed from the composite to generate mesoporosity and upon removal of the SDA molecule, this mesoporous TiO(2) material showed very high surface area (480+/-10 m(2)/g) with an average pore diameter of 2.57+/-0.05 nm. When Rose Bengal dye is entrapped inside the nanopores of this material, it showed a drastic enhancement (ca. 40-folds) in the photoconductivity vis-à-vis mesoporous TiO(2) alone under white light illumination.

RESUMEN

A new microporous organic-inorganic hybrid organosilica LHMM-2 containing a bis(propyliminomethyl)benzene moiety inside the framework has been synthesized hydrothermally without using any template or structure-directing agent. Powder XRD and TEM image analyses suggest a new disordered microporous structure with pores of dimension ca. 0.54 nm, and (13)C and (29)Si MAS NMR and spectroscopic results indicate the presence of bridging organic bis(propyliminomethyl)benzene moiety in this framework. TPD-NH(3) results suggested that nearly 5 times as much bis(propyliminomethyl)benzene moiety is located inside the micropore walls (matrix) than in the surface of the pores. LHMM-2 shows very high adsorption capacity for metal cations like Fe(3+), Cu(2+) and Zn(2+).

RESUMEN

ZnO nanoparticles were prepared by a simple solvothermal route by using a ethylene glycol (EG)-ethanol (E) solvent system. The shape and size of ZnO nanoparticles were tuned by changing the volume composition of the solvents and the synthesis temperature. Phase purity was confirmed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and crystal size was determined by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Ellipsoidal and spherical nanoparticles were obtained by varying the volume ratio of the solvents. Mostly spherical nanoparticles with average diameter of 4 nm was synthesized with higher volume fraction of EG at a lower synthesis temperature. The blueshift of room-temperature photoluminescence measurement from free exciton transition are observed for the smallest nanoparticle size that is ascribed to the quantum confinement effect. The ammonia gas sensing characteristics of the smallest diameter nanoparticles showed better sensitivity at a relatively lower temperature than that of large diameter particles.
