Introduction: Trauma represents a notable importance among the predominant causes of morbidity and mortality in the world. When it comes to deaths related to these injuries, they are in the category of external causes, since in Brazil they represent the second general cause of mortality, especially in the working-age population. Notably, traumas are strongly related to car accidents, whose rates have been increasing in recent years. In them, polytraumas occur, whose abdominal region is prevalently included. Objective: this research aims to present the profile of deaths which are associated with abdominal trauma and hospitalized at the Instituto Médico-Legal, between the years 2019 to 2021. Methodology: retrospective, cross-sectional study, fundamentally quantitative, in which the reports of deaths resulting from abdominal trauma necropsied at the IML of Toledo (PR), from 2019 to 2021, were evaluated. The variables were gender, age, type of injury, injuries of the deaths and most affected organ. Results and removal: Of the 916 deaths brought to the Scientific Police of Toledo (PR) from external causes, those included among abdominal traumas represented a percentage of 51.05% (n=462), in the period from 2019 to 2021. there was a higher prevalence of deaths from car accidents (68,61%), whose main cause was polytrauma (37.45%). Males were the most prevalent, with 84.85% (n=392), whose age group was concentrated between 18 and 29 years. The most injured organs were the liver (69.31%) and the spleen (33.66%). Final considerations: in this sample there was a predominance of deaths from accidents, mainly associated with blunt trauma, in men aged between 18 and 29 whose most injured organ outside the liver. Knowledge about the profile of deaths is an important epidemiological tool in the face of possible interventions, in addition to serving as a statistical source for other studies in the medical-legal field.

RESUMEN
Traumatic brain injury leads to glutamate release, which overstimulates N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptors, leading to neurotoxicity and cytotoxic edema. NMDA receptor antagonists may offer neuroprotection by blocking this pathway. The objective of this systematic review is to assess the efficacy of NMDA receptor antagonists for traumatic brain injury-induced brain edema in rodent models. This systematic review followed Cochrane Handbook guidelines and registered its protocol in PROSPERO (ID: CRD42023440934). Here, we included controlled rodent animal models comparing NMDA antagonist use with a placebo treatment. Outcome measures included the reduction of cerebral edema, Neurobehavioral Severity Scale, and adverse effects. The search strategy used Medical Subject Headings terms related to traumatic brain injury and NMDA receptor antagonists. The Collaborative Approach to Meta Analysis and Review of Animal Experimental Studies (CAMARADES) checklist and Systematic Review Centre for Laboratory Animal Experimentation's (SYRCLE's) tools were used to measure the quality and bias of included studies. The synthesis of results was presented in a meta-analysis of standard mean difference. Sixteen studies were included, with the predominant drugs being ifenprodil, MK-801, magnesium, and HU-211. The subjects consisted of Sprague-Dawley or Sabra rats. The analysis showed a significant reduction in brain edema with NMDA antagonist treatment (Standardized mean difference [SMD] - 1.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] - 1.59 to - 0.74, p < 0.01), despite high heterogeneity (I2 = 72%). Neurobehavioral Severity Scale also significantly improved (mean difference - 3.32, 95% CI - 4.36 to - 2.28, p < 0.01) in animals receiving NMDA antagonists. Administration within 1 h after injury showed a modest enhancement in reducing brain edema compared with the baseline (SMD - 1.23, 95% CI - 1.69 to - 0.77, p < 0.01). Studies met standards for animal welfare and model appropriateness. Although baseline comparability and selective reporting bias were generally addressed, key biases such as randomization, allocation concealment, and blinding were often unreported. Overall, NMDA antagonists exhibit promising efficacy in the treatment of traumatic brain injury. Notably, our systematic review consistently demonstrated a significant reduction in brain edema with compounds including HU-211 and NPS 150.

RESUMEN
Introduction: he present article aims to popularize the temporomandibular disorder as a possible diagnosis when the phisician is facing a primary headache that was first thought to be a migraine headache or tension type headache, specially when they are not responsible to the treatment. Methodology:This study focused on the clinical manifestation of the headache caused by temporomandibular disorder, with data searched in the National Library of Medicine, Scielo and PubMed libraries, from 2002 to 2022; also the 3rd edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders (2018) and the Continuum Headache (2021). The aspects of the clinical manifestation chosen for comparison were location of the pain, type of pain, crisis duration, improvement and worsening factors and associated symptoms. Results:27 articles were found and 3 were included and used to create a table comparing migraine, tension type and TMD headache. Some manifestations were similar, like bilateral location of headache (tension type and TMD headache) and many manifestations were distinct, like the type of pain (pulsatile for migraine, tight for tension type and rigidity or stabbing for TMD headache). In face of these results, it is clear that there are many aspects of the differential diagnosis between these three types of headache that can be investigated so that we can distinguish them. This study also reiterates the need for further studies regarding this topic. Conclusion:It is very reasonable to consider TMD headache as a first diagnosis when the complaint is a primary headache, as much as it is reasonable to consider this diagnosis when the refractoriness is the complaint. Also, considering the TMD as a trigger to the other headaches.
The aim was to report the case of a patient with REM sleep behavior disorder, unresponsive to standard treatment and with complete control of the condition after association of amantadine. Female patient, 45 years old, with systemic arterial hypertension and hypothyroidism, referred to neurological care, reporting frequent episodes of nocturnal agitation in the first hours of sleep, with walking and vocalization, waking up easily if called. She complains of drowsiness and anxiety, secondary to the impact of the RBD on her personal life. She mentions previous attempts at drug treatment with benzodiazepines (Bromazepam and Clonazepam), Zolpidem and Trazodone, all without clinical improvement, with Quetiapine being introduced at a low dose (not yet tried) 25mg, with a therapeutic target of 50mg with partial improvement only with 25mg. When trying 50mg, presenting a worsening of the picture. In a new follow-up, therapy with Amantadine 50 mg/day associated with Quetiapine 25 mg/day was started. The patient returned reporting a significant improvement in the condition, less frequent episodes associated with reduced nocturnal movement. After adaptation of the combined therapy, with adjustments in the dose of Amantadine, an increase of 50mg every 14 days up to 200 mg/day, with the possibility of using quetiapine 50mg (balance between the drugs), the patient evolved stable, with a great improvement in the quality of life and absence of new episodes of the sleep disorder.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a tick-borne rickettsiosis. The main clinical signs and symptoms are fever, severe headache, rashes and myalgia. It is considered difficult to diagnose and underreported. The study aims to descriptively analyze the epidemiology of cases of Rocky Mountain spotted fever in Brazil from 2010 to 2021. This is a retrospective cohort study that statisticall analyzes the cases of spotted fever in Brazil between 2010 and 2020 through data obtained by the Information System of Notifiable Diseases. The proportions of spotted fever cases were calculated according to: sex, age, race/color, infection environment and evolution. There are 1967 cases were confirmed. The regions with the most cases were the Southeast (n%=72.24) and the South (n%=24). However, there are 4 deaths in the south while the lethality coefficient from the southeast is 47.78%. The most affected age group was 40-59 years old (n%=34.87), and 20-39 years old (n%=28.98). 71.17% of the cases are male. As for color/race, 60% of the cases are in whites. As for the infection environment, 35.23% are at home, 15.3% are at work, 26.13% are leisure places. The prevalence in males and the predominant age group 20-59 years can be linked to work activity, which leaves hem more exposed to ticks. The high numbers in adulthood can also be related to ecotourism. The lethality of the disease differs between the South and Southeast regions. One explanation for this phenomenon would be the different etiological agents, R. rickettsi, predominant in the Southeast, generating more severe clinical conditions.

The aim of the present study is to describe the skin morphology and morphometry of the giant anteater (M. tridactyla), based on comparative analysis applied to skin segments from central metacarpal torus (palmar pad), dorsal thorax, ventral cervical, ventral abdomen, medial carpal and nasal regions. In order to do so, eight adult specimens of M. tridactyla were used for macroscopic studies and four for microscopic assessments. Microscopy was used to assess fur general features that were macroscopically assessed through visual analysis. Fragments (2.0cm²) were collected from the selected regions for microscopic studies. Samples were fixed on McDowell solution, processed through routine histology techniques and subjected to semi-serial cuts (5 µm). The cuts were stained in HE, Alcian blue and periodic acid Schiff. General morphology of different skin layers was described, as well as their architecture and composition; mesoscopy of the epidermis, dermis and stratum corneum was also carried out. There was difference in skin morphometry between males and females, and between different skin regions in the same animal, based on the statistical evaluation of the recorded values. All epidermis layers were assessed for the selected regions. Dermis encompassed surface and deep layers; it presented sweat and sebaceous glands, as well as hair follicles. Findings also allowed reporting that epidermis components are easily identified given its thickness, and the large amount of sweat glands in it it contrasts its physiological features.(AU)

Para tal, realizou- se uma pesquisa bibliométrica, de caráter observacional e abordagem quantitativa, utilizando como palavras-chave as seguintes combinações booleanas ("fibularis tertius" OR "peroneus tertius" OR "fibularis anterior" AND "surgery" OR "Plastic surgery" OR "surgical flap" OR "Lower extremity" AND "human") através da plataforma SCOPUS. O pesquisador Arnold et al., 1999, do Setor de Cirurgia Plástica e Reconstrutiva dos Estados Unidos, publicou o artigo intitulado "Muscle flaps in osteomyelitis of the lower extremity: A 20-year account", no periódico Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, e obteve 61 citações e apresentou o maior fator H para a pesquisa realizada.

The techniques of microtomography (Micro-CT), confocal laser scanner microscopy (CLSM), atomic force microscopy (AFM), nanoindentation - Vickers hardness (Nano-VH) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF) are undeniably important to the modern study of bovine podiatry. These techniques are also employed in engineering, physics and in the assessment of biomaterials used in reconstructive or experimental surgeries in bovine and bubaline claws. Although studies involving these analyses are still inconspicuous in veterinary medicine, these technologies represent a new paradigm in this area, enabling the development of new lines of research. The objective of this review is to gather information about the microstructural aspects of bovine and bubaline claws, concerning the intratubular and extratubular keratin, which is responsible for the physical and mechanical structure of the claw capsule. This study elucidates different methods used to evaluate the hooves of healthy and sick animals through a micrometric analysis and nano-scale analyses. We would like to emphasise that the described techniques can be applied to study other species.
RESUMEN
The basal nuclei are well-defined bodies of neurons with specific functions, located inside the white medullary center of the brain, directly involved with the motor system, participating greatly in the planning and control processes of movements. Studies on these nuclei in non-human primates are small and in the Alouatta belzebul species, nonexistent. The aim of the present study was to describe the morphology of the nuclei at the base of the brain of Alouatta belzebul. Ten male and female Alouatta belzebul brains were used, where after removal and coronal cut of the brain, the Mayland technique was performed to show the basal nuclei. There was the presence of the caudate nucleus, lentiform nucleus (this formed by the putamen, medial globus pallidus and lateral globus pallidus), claustrum and substantia nigra, which, functionally, are related to motor control. The substantia nigra is part of the midbrain and is also related to learning resulting from the effects of dopamine, responsible for activating the reward and addiction system in the telbrain and is also related to the red nucleus, which is also a midbrain nucleus. In Alouatta belzebul the red nucleus is present. It was found in the literature that degeneration of substantia nigra cells can cause Parkinson's disease in Macaca fasciculares, and because Alouatta belzebul has the same anatomical structures in the basal nuclei of the base of Macaca fasciculares, it is suggested that studies of functional evaluation of these structures should be carried out to verify whether Alouatta belzebul can be used as an experimental model for Parkinson's disease.

The anatomy of the dura mater's venous sinuses is important in the veterinary clinical and surgical area, for cranial procedures and interventions of wild animals, in addition to assisting in the management of neurological diseases, which can prevent serious complications. The macroscopic anatomy of the venous sinuses of the dura mater of Alouatta belzebul was studied. Five adult specimens, males and females, were dissected and fixed in 10% formaldehyde solution. In the dura mater of the Alouatta belzebul, nine venous sinuses were observed, being them dorsal sagittal sinus, ventral sagittal sinus, transverse sinus, straight sinus, sigmoid sinus, temporal sinus, parietal sinus, basilar sinus and cavernous sinus, with morphological similarities in origin, path and destination of blood flow to the internal jugular vein, assisting in the venous drainage function of the brain in this species. These data are similar to those found in other species of non-human and human primates such as Saimiri sciureus, Sapajus libidinosus and Homo sapiens. Of the venous sinuses observed, the cavernous sinus was of considerable clinical and surgical importance in Alouatta belzebul due to its topographic arrangement next to the internal carotid artery and pituitary gland, data that corroborate Sapajus libidinosus, Macaca fascicularis, Macaca mulatta, Papio ursinus, Cercopithecus pygerithrus and Galago senegalensis. In this context, the knowledge of the macroscopic anatomy of the venous sinuses of the dura mater may contribute to the role of veterinarians in less invasive surgical procedures in non-human primates such as Alouatta belzebul and other mammals.

We studied the arterial circle in the brain of five specimens of the Alouatta belzebul primate. The material had the arterial system perfused (water at 40°C), injected with stained latex (Neoprene 650), fixed in aqueous formaldehyde solution (10%) and dissected for vessel verification. The arterial circle of this primate is composed of two vascular systems: the vertebra-basilar and the carotid ones, which anastomose to close the arterial circuit. In the caudal portion of the arterial circle, there are the vertebral arteries and their branches: the rostral spinal artery and the caudal inferior cerebellar artery. The anastomosis of the vertebral arteries gives rise to the basilar artery. It presented an anatomical variation at the beginning of its path, forming a double basilar artery, called arterial island. In its course, it emitted branches giving rise to the rostral inferior cerebellar artery, the pontine arteries, the rostral cerebellar arteries, the satellite rostral cerebellar arteries and its terminal branch, the caudal cerebral artery, which presented itself in two segments: the pre-communicating one and post-communicating, joining the internal carotid artery and originating the caudal communicating artery. This group of arteries and anastomoses enclose the caudal portion of the arterial circle. From the right and left internal carotid arteries begins the rostral portion of the arterial circle, which consists of the right and left rostral cerebral arteries and the right and left middle cerebral arteries. The rostral cerebral arteries anastomose into a single trunk, giving rise to the interhemispheric artery, and in A. belzebul and Sapajus libidinosus, the rostral communicating artery is absent...(AU)

The rostral cerebral arteries anastomose into a single trunk, giving rise to the interhemispheric artery, and in A. belzebul and Sapajus libidinosus, the rostral communicating artery is absent. The interhemispheric artery goes to the midbrain region and the corpus callosum knee divides into pericalous artery and callosarginal artery, which will supply the pre and post-central regions of the cerebral hemispheres of this species, as well as other non-human and human primates. It is noted that in the first part of the left rostral cerebral artery, there is a direct inosculation between the recurrent branch of the rostral cerebral artery and left middle cerebral artery to supply the entorhinal region. This fact also occurs in Pongo spp. The middle cerebral artery travels along the lateral sulcus where it emits several superficial branches to irrigate the superior and inferior lateral cortical regions of the frontal, parietal and temporal lobes. It is not part of the arterial circle but is the terminal branch of the internal carotid artery. A. belzebul can be considered to depend on two sources of supply to the brain: the vertebra-basilar and carotid systems, contributing to the intervention of veterinarians during clinical and surgical procedures in other primates, as well as the preservation of wild animals.(AU)

The neural system plays an important role in understanding some features of animals. Anatomical complexity correlates with the increase of functional capacity. Xenarthrans include anteaters (Vermilingua), armadillos (Cingulata) and sloths (Folivora). This group is the base of eutherian mammals, and understanding the anatomy of its neural system could provide data for functional and evolutionary interpretations. The gross anatomy of the xenarthran brain is recorded. Four extant families of Pilosa and two families of Cingulata were sampled. Usual dissection procedures were used, and the brains were analysed macroscopically. The brain of two-toed sloth, three-toed sloth, six-banded armadillo, giant anteater and collared anteater are gyrencephalic. Pygmy anteater, nine-banded armadillo, great long-nosed armadillo, southern naked-tailed armadillo and giant armadillo are lissencephalic. In most species, the rhinal fissure presents two segments, rostral and caudal (except in Vermilingua and three-toed sloth). The diencephalon and brainstem present similar anatomy. The cerebellum is wide and presents four lobes (rostral, central, caudal and floccular). Its average volume is 12.16% (Folivora), 14.26% (Vermilingua) and 18.61% (Cingulata). Among these groups, there is a statistical difference between Folivora/Cingulata concerning the cerebellum average. The general pattern of the brain of the xenarthrans is similar to that of other mammals.

Background: The giant anteater is a Xenarthra of the Myrmecophagidae family. It is classified in Brazil as vulnerablespecie, however, in Rio de Janeiro and Rio Grande do Sul it is probably extinct. In an attempt to contribute to the preservation of the species, many injured animals are referred for treatment and rehabilitation, but the lack of information aboutmorphology may hinder a more efficient clinical-surgical approach. The knowledge on the topography, dimensions andmorphology of lymph nodes of a given species is essential for medical practice. The aim of this study was to identify anddescribe the general morphology of the superficial lymph nodes of Myrmecophaga tridactyla.Materials, Methods & Results: Ten cadavers of adult Myrmecophaga tridactyla were used in this study. They were fixedand preserved with 10% formaldehyde solution and dissected throughout their length to locate their superficial lymphnodes. Lymph nodes of each center were removed for mesoscopic analysis. Measurements of width, length and thicknesswere obtained by a digital caliper. The superficial lymph nodes observed in the head were the mandibular and the intermandibular, while in the neck were identified superficial cervical and deep cervical lymph nodes. In the thoracic limbs, the axillary and the axillary accessory lymph nodes were present. In the pelvic limbs just one lymph node, the femoral, was observed, located in the thick subcutaneous fascia of the medial surface of the thigh. The main anatomical differencesfound in the lymph nodes of M. tridactyla are the absence of parotid, popliteal and subiliac lymph nodes and the presenceof intermandibular lymph nodes and the developed femoral lymph nodes, which are unique in the pelvic limbs of this species. Moreover, some superficial lymph nodes were formed by several small lymph nodes, forming clusters, as observedin the proper and accessory axillary and femoral...(AU)
