RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The demand by dental practitioners for adhesives led to the innovation of newer self-etched universal adhesive systems. The objectives were to evaluate the shear bond strength (SBS) of metal brackets bonded with Optibond eXTRa Universal self-etch adhesive and Transbond XT primer and also to assess the adhesive remnant index (ARI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 100 extracted human premolar tooth samples were divided into 2 groups (n = 50) according to the adhesive system employed: Transbond XT (3M Unitek) and Optibond eXTRa Universal (KaVo Kerr). In group A, Transbond XT primer was applied, and in group B, Optibond eXTRa was applied, and metal brackets (American Orthodontics) were bonded with the Transbond XT adhesive, followed by photopolymerization with LEDition. The samples were preserved in artificial saliva for 30 days. SBS was tested using a universal testing machine (DAK Series7200, India). The ARI was assessed at 10× magnification under a stereomicroscope (Meiji Techno, Japan). The SBS scores were subjected to independent sample t-test and ARI scores to Pearson's Chi-square test. RESULTS: The mean SBS and standard deviation of Transbond XT is 12.11 ± 2.6 MPa and that of Optibond eXTRa Universal is 11.36 ± 2.8 MPa, revealing a statistically nonsignificant difference. Transbond XT displayed higher ARI scores and was statistically significant (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION: The Optibond eXTRa Universal adhesive appears to be preferable for orthodontic bonding as it exhibited clinically acceptable SBS and performed better in terms of the ARI.

RESUMEN

CONTEXT: Periodontally accelerated osteogenic orthodontics (PAOO) combines alveolar corticotomy, bone graft materials, and the application of orthodontic forces for rapid correction of malocclusions. AIMS: The present study aims to primarily assess differences in orthodontic treatment duration, bone quality around corticotomy sites, postoperative healing, and subjective pain when corticotomy was done conventionally and with the placement of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2). SETTINGS AND DESIGN: Thirty individuals participated in this study. Individuals were randomly assigned into each of the following experimental groups; C + BMP: Corticotomy with 0.5 µg/mL rhBMP-2 and C: Corticotomy only. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Clinical parameters included recording the duration of the treatment period, visual analog scale scores and early wound healing index scores. The evaluation of bone density was performed at baseline, 3 months, and 6 months by using RVG. STATISTICAL ANALYSIS USED: Two-way analysis of variance and post hoc multiple comparison tests were used to compare data between test and control groups at different time points. RESULTS: rhBMP-2 application was effective in reducing the overall treatment time and resulted in an increase in bone density around corticotomy sites at the end of the treatment period when compared to conventional corticotomy procedure. Placement of rhBMP-2 neither delayed wound healing nor affected participant pain scores. CONCLUSIONS: From this trial conducted over a period of 6 months, rhBMP-2 has the potential to function as a regenerative material in PAOO.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate shear bond strength (SBS) of Ormocer-bonded orthodontic brackets with self-etching primer (SEP) and conventional adhesive system and also to assess the amount of adhesive remaining on the tooth surface after debonding using adhesive remnant index (ARI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was done on 90 extracted human upper first permanent maxillary premolars. The study sample was categorized into three groups of 30 each to assess the SBS using three adhesives, Ormocer, SEP, and conventional adhesive system. Following debonding, the surfaces of teeth were examined for residual adhesive remaining by means of the optical stereomicroscope at ×50 magnification. ARI (Artun and Bergland) was used to classify the amount of residual adhesive. Obtained data were expressed as mean ± standard deviation, and obtained data was expressed as mean ± standard deviation (SD) and statistical analysis was done using one way ANOVA and Mann-Whitney U-test [SPSS version 17 statistical package (SPSS Inc., Chicago, IL)]. RESULTS: The mean SBS was maximum in Group I followed by Group II and Group III. The difference in the mean SBS among Group I (8.67 ± 1.84 Mpa), Group II (7.72 ± 1.82 MPa) and Group III (6.42 ± 1.55 MPa) was statistically significant. ARI was maximum in Group I followed by Group II and minimum Group III. CONCLUSION: Ormocer may be utilized as a substitute to generally used bisphenol A-glycidyl methacrylate-based adhesives; however, its effectiveness should be determined clinically by in vivo studies.

RESUMEN

Transposition of teeth is a rare condition, with a prevalence of 0.3-0.4% in general population. They are more commonly observed in females, and may occur unilaterally/bilaterally with greater frequency of left side occurrence in unilateral transposition cases. A 17-year-old female patient reported with the chief complaint of unaesthetic smile. On clinical examination the patient was diagnosed with Angle's class I malocclusion with an ectopically erupted maxillary left canine labial to the left central incisor with retained deciduous canine. The treatment plan decided was to extract the retained deciduous canine, level and align the ectopic canine using an R-loop. The treatment for the patient was finished in 14 months and was retained using a fixed lingual retainer in the upper and lower arches.

INTRODUCTION: Molar distalization is the non extraction method of managing Class II malocclusions. AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the skeletal and dentoalveolar effects of maxillary molar distalization with K-loop appliance, and to compare these effects with that of pendulum group. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Class I and dental Class II malocclusions were divided into two groups of 15 each: In Group 1 (nine females and six males; mean age, 16.0±2.6 years) patients were treated with K-Loop molar distalization supported palatally by Nance button, while in Group 2 (seven females and eight males; mean age, 15.4±4.7 years), the patients were treated with conventional pendulum appliance. Standardized lateral cephalograms were taken at the beginning of treatment (T0) and at the end of molar distalization (T1) and the changes were statistically analyzed with paired t-test. RESULTS: The results showed no statistically significant difference in the amount of molar distalization in either of the appliance groups: the mean amount of molar distal movement of 5.1±0.8 mm and 4.93±1.68 mm was observed in the Group 1 and 2 respectively. The incisors moved mesially by 1.3±0.63 mm in Group 1 and 1.57±0.58 mm in Group 2. CONCLUSION: K-Loop molar distalizing appliance has similar skeletal and dentoalveolar effects as that of pendulum appliance, with the advantages of simple yet efficient to control the moment-force ratio to produce all types of tooth movements and also requires minimal patient co-operation.

INTRODUCTION: Alveolar and skeletal chin dimensions with facial height have an impact on diagnosis and treatment planning in orthodontic patients and serves as a reference landmark for facial aesthetics. AIM: To evaluate the alveolar and skeleton chin dimensions among different divergent patterns, to evaluate the lower face height in different divergent growth patterns, to give an estimate to the oral surgeon for any adjunctive procedure. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study includes a total sample of 45 non-growing individuals (26 males and 19 females) from the archival records of the Orthodontic Department with age ranging between 18-25 years, classified into different divergent patterns based on the mandibular plane angle. The sample was divided into three groups, of which 15 patients in each group were evaluated: Group-1: Normodivergent, Group-2: Hypodivergent and Group-3: Hyperdivergent patterns respectively. Standardized digital lateral cephalograms and antero-posterior cephalograms of these patients were obtained in Natural Head Position (NHP). RESULTS: The results of the retrospective cephalometeric study were statistically analyzed by using ANOVA and Tukey's multiple post hoc test which showed that hard tissue chin measurement were greater in hypodivergent group (13.7mm) and the increased lower facial height showed statistically significant difference in high mandibular plane angle group (59.6mm). In antero-posterior cephalograms the transverse width showed statistically significant difference in normodivergent group (32.60mm). CONCLUSION: The anterio-posterior width of the symphysis was higher in hypodivergent growth pattern, whereas vertical height of the symphysis was greater in hyperdivergent group. The lower facial height among three groups showed statistically significant difference among hyperdivergent group. In comparison of all the three groups in Anterio-Posterior (AP) cephalograms, statistically significant difference was noted in normodivergent group when compared with the other two groups.

RESUMEN

Growing skeletal class II malocclusions with mandibular deficiency have been treated for more than a century with different types of functional appliances. Removable or fixed functional appliances are available to advance the mandible. Fixed functional appliances have the advantage of not requiring patient compliance. They can also be used concurrently with brackets. This article presents the case reports of successfully treated mild skeletal class II in late stages of puberty by using a Forsus fatigue resistance appliance along with custom made crimp.

RESUMEN

Mandibular incisor extraction can be regarded as a valuable treatment option in certain malocclusions to obtain excellence in orthodontic results in terms of function, aesthetics and stability. This treatment alternative is indicated in clinical situations like mild to moderate class III malocclusion, mild anterior mandibular tooth size excess, periodontally compromised teeth, ectopic eruption of mandibular incisor and minimal openbite tendencies. Unlike in premolar extraction cases, space closure in mandibular incisor extraction cases is unique in which the extraction space will be in the middle of the arch. The end result of space closure in these cases should be well aligned, upright, anterior teeth with parallel roots and the goal can be achieved with the bodily tooth movement through proper application of biomechanics. The purpose of this article is to explain the biomechanics of space closure in mandibular incisor extraction cases.
