RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Fatty intrathecal lesions are a cause of tethered cord, and detection of these on spinal MR imaging is paramount. Conventional T1 FSE sequences are the mainstay of detecting fatty elements; however, 3D gradient-echo MR images, volumetric interpolated breath-hold examination/liver acquisition with volume acceleration (VIBE/LAVA), are popular, given the increased motion resistance. We sought to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of VIBE/LAVA compared with T1 FSE for detection of fatty intrathecal lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective, institutional review board-approved study, 479 consecutive pediatric spine MRIs obtained to evaluate cord tethering between January 2016 and April 2022 were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were patients who were 20 years of age or younger who underwent spine MRIs containing both axial T1 FSE and VIBE/LAVA sequences of the lumbar spine. The presence or absence of fatty intrathecal lesions was recorded for each sequence. If fatty intrathecal lesions were present, anterior-posterior and transverse dimensions were recorded. VIBE/LAVA and T1 FSE sequences were evaluated on 2 separate occasions (VIBE/LAVAs first followed by T1 FSE several weeks later) to minimize bias. Basic descriptive statistics compared fatty intrathecal lesion sizes on T1 FSEs and VIBE/LAVAs. Receiver operating characteristic curves were used to determine minimal fatty intrathecal lesion size detectable by VIBE/LAVA. RESULTS: Sixty-six patients were included, with 22 having fatty intrathecal lesions (mean age, 7.2 years). T1 FSE sequences revealed fatty intrathecal lesions in 21/22 cases (95%); however, fatty intrathecal lesions on VIBE/LAVA were detected in 12/22 patients (55%). Mean anterior-posterior and transverse dimensions of fatty intrathecal lesions measured larger on T1 FSE compared with VIBE/LAVA sequences (5.4 × 5.0 mm versus 1.5 × 1.6 mm, respectively; P values = .039 anterior-posterior; .027 transverse). CONCLUSIONS: While T1 3D gradient-echo MR images may have decreased the acquisition time and are more motion-resistant than conventional T1 FSE sequences, they are less sensitive and may miss small fatty intrathecal lesions.

RESUMEN

Immobilized enzymes have received incredible interests in industry, pharmaceuticals, chemistry and biochemistry sectors due to their various advantages such as ease of separation, multiple reusability, non-toxicity, biocompatibility, high activity and resistant to environmental changes. This review in between various immobilized enzymes focuses on lipase as one of the most practical enzyme and chitosan as a preferred biosupport for lipase immobilization and provides a broad range of studies of recent decade. We highlight several aspects of lipase immobilization on the surface of chitosan support containing various types of lipase and immobilization techniques from physical adsorption to covalent bonding and cross-linking with their benefits and drawbacks. The recent advances and future perspectives that can improve the present problems with lipase and chitosan such as high-price of lipase and low mechanical resistance of chitosan are also discussed. According to the literature, optimization of immobilization methods, combination of these methods with other techniques, physical and chemical modifications of chitosan, co-immobilization and protein engineering can be useful as a solution to overcome the mentioned limitations.

RESUMEN

In this study, we have reported the synthesis and characterization of new magnetic bionanocatalyst based on chitosan and investigated their catalytic activity in the A3-coupling reaction. In order to increase the stability of chitosan, starch oxide biopolymer was used as a green covalent linking agent between chitosan chains. After the cross-linking of chitosan with starch oxide, aldehyde functional groups were reacted with amine groups of cysteine to form the corresponding Schiff bases in the hybrid biopolymer. Then, the imine bonds were reduced to prevent possible their hydrolysis. The magnetic support was resulted with addition of iron oxide nanoparticles. In the presence of thiol and carboxylate coordinated groups of amino acid, silver ions were immobilized on this biosupport.

RESUMEN

An experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of lemon verbena powder and vitamin C on performance and immunity of broilers under heat stress. The experiment was carried out with a total of 160-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chickens in a completely randomized design. From 25 days of age, the birds were assigned to four diets including control diet and treatment diets which were supplemented with 2 levels of lemon verbena (0.5% and 1.0%) and one level of vitamin C (250 mg/kg) in 16-floor pens with 10 chickens each and reared to 42 days of age. To induce chronic heat stress, birds were exposed to an ambient temperature of 35 ± 2 °C for 8 h daily (from 09:00 AM until 17:00 PM) between 25 and 42 days of age. At the end of experiment, one chick/pen was randomly selected, and the performance and blood parameters were evaluated. Dietary supplementation of 1.0% lemon verbena increased (p < 0.05) average weight gain and feed intake by 5.81% and 3.29%, and reduced feed conversion ratio by 2.59% respectively compared to control group. Birds fed diets containing 1.0% lemon verbena had significantly higher relative weight of bursa of fabricius and breast (p < 0.05). LDL decreased by 15.85% and 17.57%, for birds fed 0.5% and 1.0% lemon verbena respectively. The ratio of heterophyl to lymphocyte was reduced (p < 0.05) by 20.68% via significant decrease in heterophyl by 15.55% and significant increase in lymphocyte by 4.51% in birds fed lemon verbena at the rate of 1.0% compared to those fed the control diet. 1.0% lemon verbena and vitamin C elevated (p = 0.0005) the level of glutathione peroxidase by 51.81% and 27.90%, respectively. In conclusion, lemon verbena and vitamin C improved some performance data and blood metabolites which somehow suppressed the negative effects of heat stress.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we analyze the behavior of hydrophobic polyelectrolytes. It has been proposed that this system adopts a pearl necklace structure reminiscent of the Rayleigh instability of a charged droplet. Using a Poisson-Boltzmann approach, we calculate the counterion distribution around a given pearl, assuming the latter to be penetrable for the counterions. This allows us to calculate the effective electric charge of the pearl as a function of the chemical charge. Our predictions are in good agreement with the recent experimental measurements of the effective charge by Essafi et al. (Essafi, W.; Lafuma, F.; Baigl, D.; Williams, C. E. Europhys. Lett. 2005, 71, 938.). Our results allow us to understand the large deviation from the Manning law observed in these experiments.

RESUMEN

Heat-induced diffusion of nucleosomes along DNA is an experimentally well-studied phenomenon, presumably induced by twist defects that propagate through the wrapped DNA portion. The diffusion constant depends dramatically on the local mechanical properties of the DNA and the presence of DNA-binding ligands. This has been quantitatively understood by a stochastic three-state model. Future experiments are expected to allow application of forces on the nucleosome that induce a directed sliding. By extending the three-state model, the present work studies theoretically the response of the nucleosome to such external forces and how it is affected by the mechanical properties of the DNA and the presence of DNA-binding ligands.

RESUMEN

The response of a short DNA segment to bending is studied, taking into account the anisotropy in the bending rigidities caused by the double-helical structure. It is shown that the anisotropy introduces an effective nonlinear twist-bend coupling that can lead to the formation of kinks and modulations in the curvature and/or in the twist, depending on the values of the elastic constants and the imposed deflection angle. The typical wavelength for the modulations, or the distance between the neighboring kinks is found to be set by half of the DNA pitch.
