Microplastics (MP) are omnipresent in aquaculture and can induce several toxic effects, mainly oxidative stress. Therefore, alternatives to minimize these effects are welcome. In this study, chitosan (1 and 3 g/kg) was supplemented through the feed of farmed shrimp P. vannamei for 30 days. After this period, the shrimp were exposed to MP (0.5 mg/L) for 7 days. The results showed the presence of MP in hepatopancreas, gills and muscle. Hepatopancreas morphological alterations, as well as lipid peroxidation, a decrease in GSH level, and an increase in SOD activity indicated an oxidative stress that was reversed by chitosan. The muscle was also affected by MP, showing decreased CAT activity and increased SOD activity, though no lipid peroxidation was observed. In muscle, chitosan reversed the SOD increase to basal activity. The results obtained showed that chitosan was more effective against oxidative stress than in preventing accumulation and histological damage.

Establishing marine species distributions is essential for guiding management and can be estimated by identifying potential favorable habitat at a population level and incorporating individual-level information (e.g., movement constraints) to inform realized space use. In this research, we applied a combined modeling approach to tracking data of adult female and juvenile South American sea lions (Otaria flavescens; n = 9) from July to November 2011 to make habitat predictions for populations in northern Chile. We incorporated topographic and oceanographic predictors with sea lion locations and environmentally based pseudo-absences in a generalized linear model for estimating population-level distribution. For the individual approach, we used a generalized linear mixed-effects model with a negative exponential kernel variable to quantify distance-dependent movement from the colony. Spatial predictions from both approaches were combined in a bivariate color map to identify areas of agreement. We then used a GIS-based risk model to characterize bycatch risk in industrial and artisanal purse-seine fisheries based on fishing set data from scientific observers and artisanal fleet logs (2010-2015), the bivariate sea lion distribution map, and criteria ratings of interaction characteristics. Our results indicate population-level associations with productive, shallow, low slope waters, near to river-mouths, and with high eddy activity. Individual distribution was restricted to shallow slopes and cool waters. Variation between approaches may reflect intrinsic factors restricting use of otherwise favorable habitat; however, sample size was limited, and additional data are needed to establish the full range of individual-level distributions. Our bycatch risk outputs identified highest risk from industrial fisheries operating nearshore (within 5 NM) and risk was lower, overall, for the artisanal fleet. This research demonstrates the potential for integrating potential and realized distribution models within a spatial risk assessment and fills a gap in knowledge on this species' distribution, providing a basis for targeting bycatch mitigation outreach and interventions.

In the field of shrimp aquaculture, the utilization of probiotics represents a promising avenue, due to the well-documented benefits conferred by these microorganisms. In the current study, a Bacillus subtilis strain, referred to as strain E, was isolated from the gastrointestinal tract of the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei and subsequently identified via molecular methods and phylogeny. The probiotic potential of strain E was characterized, and its application as a feed shrimp additive was evaluated in a 45-day experiment. Several parameters were assessed, including zootechnical performance, muscle tissue proximate composition, hepatopancreas lipid concentration, and the expression of genes associated with digestion, amino acid metabolism, and antioxidant defense mechanisms in various shrimp tissues. Although no significant impact on zootechnical performance was observed, supplementation with strain E led to an increase in lipid concentration within both muscle and hepatopancreas tissues. Furthermore, a marked decrease in the expression of genes linked to digestion and amino acid metabolism was noted. These findings suggest that the addition of the B. subtilis strain E to shrimp feed may enhance nutrient absorption and modulate the expression of genes related to digestion and amino acid metabolism.

The objective of this was to evaluate the ability of bioflocs to assimilate and transfer antioxidant compounds present in açaí Euterpe oleracea to juvenile Penaeus vannamei shrimp grown in a biofloc system. Juvenile shrimp were distributed into four treatment groups (control, 5, 20, and 80 mg açaí L-1), containing 31 shrimps/tank (90 L), and cultivated for 30 days. Every 24 h throughout the experimental period, the respective açaí concentrations were added directly to the cultivation water. The bioflocs and hepatopancreas lost their antioxidant capacity with increasing concentrations of açaí; however, lipid damage was mitigated after treatment with 20 mg of açaí L-1 (p < 0.05). The application of 20 mg açaí L-1 increased the mean height and area of the middle intestinal microvilli (p < 0.05). Mortality and protein and lipid damage in shrimp muscle increased with daily administration of 80 mg açaí L-1 (p < 0.05). It is concluded that the bioflocs were able to assimilate the antioxidants present in açaí and transfer them to the shrimp, and the administration of 20 mg açaí L-1 presented the best performance, demonstrating the possibility of its application in the cultivation of P. vannamei in a biofloc system.

In this study, we evaluated the effect of microplastic (MP, polystyrene, 1.1 µm) exposure through diet at two different levels (40 and 400 µg MP/kg of ration) in the shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei for seven days. After the exposure period, oxidative stress parameters, histological alterations, and MP accumulation in different shrimp tissues (gut, gills, hepatopancreas, and muscle) were also evaluated. The results showed that MP was detected in the gills, muscles, and hepatopancreas. In addition, in the gut, gills, and hepatopancreas, disruption in redox cells was observed. Also, lipid and DNA damage was evident in the hepatopancreas. Histopathological analysis revealed edema in the intestine, hepatopancreas, and in the muscle. Granuloma formation with infiltrated hemocytes occurred in the intestine and hepatopancreas. These results show that MP exposure can affect the health and welfare of L. vannamei and may also affect the final consumers once MP is accumulated.

Fungal colorants are gradually entering the global color market, given their advantages of being less harmful to human health, as well as having greater stability and biotechnological potential, compared to other natural sources. The present work concerns the isolation and identification of an endophytic filamentous fungus, together with the chemical characterization and assessment of the fluorescence, toxicity, stability, and application potential of its synthesized red colorant. The endophytic fungus was isolated from Hymenaea courbaril, a tree from the Brazilian savannah, and was identified as Talaromyces minnesotensis by phenotypic and genotypic characterization. Submerged cultivation of the fungus resulted in the production of approximately 12 AU500 of a red biocolorant which according to LC-DAD-MS analysis is characterized by being a complex mixture of molecules of the azaphilone class. Regarding cytotoxicity assays, activity against human hepatoblastoma (HepG2) cells was only observed at concentrations above 5.0 g L-1, while antimicrobial effects against pathogenic bacteria and yeast occurred at concentrations above 50.0 g L-1. The biocolorant showed high stability at neutral pH values and low temperatures (10 to 20 °C) and high half-life values (t1/2), which indicates potential versatility for application in different matrices, as observed in tests using detergent, gelatin, enamel, paint, and fabrics. The results demonstrated that the biocolorant synthesized by Talaromyces minnesotensis has potential for future biotechnological applications. KEY POINTS: • An endophytic fungus, which was isolated and identified, synthesize a red colorant. • The colorant showed fluorescence property, low toxicity, and application potential. • The red biocolorant was highly stable at pH 8.0 and temperatures below 20°C.

The effects of silver nano/microparticles (AgP) on juvenile Litopenaeus vannamei shrimp were evaluated through several responses, aiming to use it as a prophylactic and therapeutic method. Shrimps (3.19 ± 0.13 g) were exposed to clear water for 3 h with increasing concentrations of nanosilver (0; 25; 100; and 400 µg/l). After 3 h of exposure, they were transferred to water without nanosilver for 30 days (recovery). The weight gain and weekly growth were not affected by AgNP. Total antioxidant capacity (ACAP) increased in the hepatopancreas (exposure period) and gills (recovery) in shrimp exposed to AgNP. In muscle, ACAP was induced in shrimp exposed to 100 µg/l AgNP (exposure). In the gills, there was an increase in TBARS in shrimp exposed to 100 µg/l AgNP (recovery). In the concentration of protein-associated sulfhydryl groups (P-SH), a decrease was observed in the hepatopancreas (recovery) in the 100 µg/l AgNP treatment. In chromaticity parameters, an increase in reddish tones was observed in shrimp exposed to 100 µg/l AgNP (recovery). An increase in granular hemocytes was verified in shrimp exposed to 25 and 400 µg/l AgNP during exposure. Tissues analyzed histologically showed normal patterns without apoptosis or necrosis processes, and after 30 d of recovery, only in one muscle sample of shrimp exposed to µg/l of AgNP was silver detected. It is concluded that a prophylactic action of short duration (3 h) mostly did not affected the welfare of shrimp L. vannamei and can be considered its use as a therapeutic strategy.

The Humboldt Current Ecosystem (HCE) is one of the most productive marine ecosystems, sustaining one of the largest fishing industries in the world. Although several species of cetaceans are known to inhabit these productive waters, quantitative assessments of their abundance and distribution patterns are scarce and patchy. Here, we present the first abundance and distribution estimates for fin whale (Balaenoptera physalus), southeast Pacific blue whales (Balaenoptera musculus), sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus), dusky dolphin (Lagenorhynchus obscurus), and common dolphin (Delphinus spp.) in the entire Chilean portion of the HCE. Line transect surveys were conducted during 2016-2021 between 18° S and 41° S and up to ~ 200 km offshore, and data were analyzed using distance sampling methods. Group counts were modelled as a function of environmental variables using single step Bayesian Binomial N-mixture model (BNMM), which allows full uncertainty propagation between model components. By using spatially explicit predictions of cetacean densities and observed vessel densities in the HCE, we provide quantitative assessments on the relative probability of cetaceans encountering vessels (RPCEV). Dusky dolphin and fin whale showed the largest distribution overlap with industrial and artisanal fishery fleets. Our results highlight areas where effort should be prioritized to address the extant but unquantified negative interactions between vessels and cetaceans in Chilean HCE.

Objective: Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is a common complication of hypertension and microRNAs (miRNAs) are considered to play an important role in cardiac hypertrophy development. This study evaluated the relationship between circulating miRNAs and LVH in hypertensive patients. Methods: Two cohorts [exploratory (n = 42) and validation (n = 297)] of hypertensive patients were evaluated by clinical, laboratory and echocardiography analysis. The serum expression of 754 miRNAs in the exploratory cohort and 6 miRNAs in the validation cohort was evaluated by the TaqMan OpenArray® system and quantitative polymerase chain reaction, respectively. Results: Among the 754 analyzed miRNAs, ten miRNAs (miR-30a-5p, miR-let7c, miR-92a, miR-451, miR-145-5p, miR-185, miR-338, miR-296, miR-375, and miR-10) had differential expression between individuals with and without LVH in the exploratory cohort. Results of multivariable regression analysis adjusted for confounding variables showed that three miRNAs (miR-145-5p, miR-451, and miR-let7c) were independently associated with LVH and left ventricular mass index in the validation cohort. Functional enrichment analysis demonstrated that these three miRNAs can regulate various genes and pathways related to cardiac remodeling. Furthermore, in vitro experiments using cardiac myocytes demonstrated that miR-145-5p mimic transfection up-regulated the expression of brain and atrial natriuretic peptide genes, which are markers of cardiac hypertrophy, while anti-miR-145-5p transfection abrogated the expression of these genes in response to norepinephrine stimulus. Conclusions: Our data demonstrated that circulating levels of several miRNAs, in particular miR-145-5p, miR-451, and let7c, were associated with LVH in hypertensive patients, indicating that these miRNAS may be potential circulating biomarkers or involved in hypertension-induced LV remodeling.
