BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a prevalent and disabling mood disorder, thought to be linked with brain white matter (WM) alterations. Prior diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) studies have reported inconsistent changes in fractional anisotropy (FA) across different brain regions in MDD patients. However, none of these studies utilized raw t-map data for WM meta-analysis in MDD. Our study aims to address this gap by conducting a whole-brain-based meta-analysis of FA in MDD using Seed-based d mapping via permutation of subject images (SDM-PSI), combining reported peak coordinates and raw statistical parametric maps. OBJECTIVES: Following PRISMA guidelines, we performed a systematic search and meta-analysis to compare FA in MDD patients with healthy controls (HC). Our goal was to identify WM abnormalities in MDD, using SDM, which could shed light on the disorder's pathogenesis. RESULTS: The meta-analysis included 39 studies with 3696 participants (2094 with MDD, 1602HC). It revealed that MDD patients, in comparison to HC, have lower FA in the corpus callosum (CC) and anterior thalamic projections (ATP). Subgroup analyses indicated that the CC is a more stable pathogenic factor in MDD. Meta-regression analyses showed no linear correlation between the mean age, percentage of female patients, duration of depression, and FA abnormalities. This suggests that WM impairments in interhemispheric connections and anterior thalamocortical circuits are significant in the pathogenesis of MDD.

AIM: Tirzepatide, a newly developed dual glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonist, has received approval for treating type 2 diabetes (T2D) and is currently being studied for its potential in long-term weight control. We aim to explore the safety and efficacy of once-weekly subcutaneous tirzepatide for weight loss in T2D or obese patients. METHODS: A comprehensive search was performed on various databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov from inception up to April 29, 2024, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that assessed the efficacy of once-weekly tirzepatide compared to a placebo in adults with or without T2D. The mean difference (MD) and risk ratio (RR) were calculated for continuous and dichotomous outcomes, respectively. The risk of bias was evaluated using the RoB-2 tool (Cochrane), while the statistical analysis was conducted utilizing RevMan 5.4.1 software. RESULTS: Seven RCTs comprising 4795 individuals ranging from 12 to 72 weeks were identified. Compared to the placebo group, tirzepatide at doses of 5, 10, and 15 mg demonstrated significant dose-dependent weight loss. The mean difference (MD) in the percentage change in body weight (BW) was -8.07% (95% CI -11.01, -5.13; p < 0.00001), -10.79% (95% CI -13.86, -7.71; p < 0.00001), and -11.83% (95% CI -14.52, -9.14; p < 0.00001), respectively. Additionally, the MD in the absolute change in BW was -7.5 kg (95% CI -10.9, -4.1; p < 0.0001), -11.0 kg (95% CI -16.9, -5.2; p = 0.0002), and -11.5 kg (95% CI -16.2, -6.7; p < 0.00001), for the 5, 10, and 15 mg doses, respectively. All three doses of tirzepatide also significantly reduced body mass index and waist circumference. Furthermore, it led to a greater percentage of patients experiencing weight loss exceeding 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25%. Moreover, tirzepatide showed great success in reducing blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and lipid profiles. In terms of safety, gastrointestinal side effects were the most frequently reported adverse events in all three doses of tirzepatide groups, which were generally mild-to-moderate and transient. CONCLUSION: Tirzepatide treatment could lead to remarkable and sustained weight loss that is well-tolerated and safe, representing a novel and valuable therapeutic strategy for long-term weight management.

F-box proteins play essential roles in various cellular processes of spermatogenesis by means of ubiquitylation and subsequent target protein degradation. They are the substrate-recognition subunits of SKP1-cullin 1-F-box protein (SCF) E3 ligase complexes. Dysregulation of F­box protein­mediated proteolysis could lead to male infertility in humans and mice. The emerging studies revealed the physiological function, pathological evidence, and biochemical substrates of F-box proteins in the development of male germ cells, which urging us to review the current understanding of how F­box proteins contribute to spermatogenesis. More functional and mechanistic study will be helpful to define the roles of F-box protein in spermatogenesis, which will pave the way for the logical design of F-box protein-targeted diagnosis and therapies for male infertility, as the spermatogenic role of many F-box proteins remains elusive.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a metabolic disease characterized by high blood sugar. Due to its complex pathogenesis, no effective drugs have been found so far. Ophiopogonin D (OP-D) has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anticancer activities, but its role in DM has not been studied so far. Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was used to induce INS-1 cells. INS-1 cells induced by H2O2 were treated with OP-D, and cell apoptosis, oxidative stress damage, and related indexes of mitochondrial function were respectively detected by cell counting kit-8, flow cytometry, western blot, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction, JC-1 fluorescent probe, and related kits. Subsequently, molecular docking techniques were used to investigate the relationship between OP-D and Keap1 and to explore the regulation mechanism of OP-D on H2O2-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial function in INS-1 cells. OP-D inhibited the apoptosis and oxidative stress level of H2O2-induced INS-1 cells, thereby inhibiting cell damage. Moreover, OP-D inhibited mitochondrial dysfunction in H2O2-induced INS-1 cells. At last, we found that Keap1/Nrf2 specific signaling pathway inhibitor ML385 was able to reverse the inhibitory effect of OP-D on H2O2-induced oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in INS-1 cells. In conclusion, OP-D improves oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in pancreatic ß cells induced by H2O2 through activating Keap1/Nrf2/ARE pathway in DM.

Functional microfibers have attracted extensive attention due to their potential in health monitoring, radiation cooling, power management and luminescence. Among these, polymer fiber-based microlasers have plentiful applications due to their merits of full color, high quality factor and simple fabrication. However, developing a facile approach to fabricate stable microfiber lasing devices for high-sensitivity thermal sensing is still challenging. In this research, we propose a design of a stable and transferable membrane inlaid with whispering-gallery-mode plasmon hybrid microlaser arrays for thermal sensing. By integrating plasmonic gold nanorods with polymer lasing microfiber arrays that are embedded in the polydimethylsiloxane matrix, whispering-gallery-mode lasing arrays with high quality are achieved. Based on the thermo-optical effect of the membrane, a tuning range of 1.462 nm for the lasing peak shift under temperature variation from 30.6 °C to 38.7 °C is obtained. The ultimate thermal sensing sensitivity can reach up to 0.181 nm °C-1 and the limit of detection is 0.131 °C, with a high figure of merit of 2.961 °C-1. Moreover, a stable laser linewidth can be maintained within the tuning range due to plasmon-improved photon confinement and PDMS-reduced scattering loss. This work is expected to provide a facile approach for the fabrication of high-sensitivity on-chip thermometry devices.

Introducing phase transition materials to random systems provides a promising route to create new optoelectronic functionalities of random lasers. Here, a phase transition random laser with switchable lasing modes is reported, which is designed with a thermoresponsive hydrogel as scattering medium. By manipulating the phase transition in hydrogel, random lasing modes can be switched reversibility between incoherent and coherent random lasing. The phenomenon derives from the changing of light scattering properties in different phase states, thus affecting the optical feedback path of random lasing. Besides, based on its controllable and easily detectable time-domain characteristics, the phase transition random laser is applied in information encoding and transmission. It is the first time that the transition from coherent to incoherent random lasing is observed by varying the sample phase states. This work will inspire the design and application of novel random lasers in photoelectric device.

Patterning of luminescent nanomaterials is critical in the fields of display and information encryption, and inkjet printing technology have shown remarkable significance with the advantage of fast, large-scalable and integrative. However, inkjet printing nanoparticle deposits with high-resolution and well controlled morphology from nonpolar solvent droplets is still challenging. Herein, a facile approach of nonpolar solvent modulated inkjet printing of nanoparticles self-assembly patterns driven by the shrinkage of the droplet and inner solutal convection is proposed. Through regulating the solvent composition and nanoparticle concentration, multicolor light-emissive upconversion nanoparticle self-assembly microarrays with tunable morphologies are achieved, showing the integration of designable microscale morphologies and photoluminescences for multimodal anti-counterfeit. Furthermore, inkjet printing of nanoparticles self-assembled continuous lines with adjustable morphologies by controlling the coalescence and drying of the ink droplets is achieved. The high resolution of inkjet printing microarrays and continuous lines' width < 5 and 10 µm is realized, respectively. This nonpolar solvent-modulated inkjet printing of nanoparticle deposits approach facilitates the patterning and integration of different nanomaterials, and is expected to provide a versatile platform for fabricating advanced devices applied in photonics integration, micro-LED, and near-field display.

As the major energy bases, numerous coal cities in China are facing severe challenges in terms of resources and environment. In order to overcome the disadvantages of static evaluation, this study selected Huainan city, a typical coal city in China, as the case, and combined with the improved SD (system dynamics) model, analyzed its RECC (resource and environmental carrying capacity) systematically and dynamically. Firstly, a SD model of RECC system including resource-environment and society-economy subsystem was constructed. Then, the control parameters were determined objectively according to the analysis results of BP-DEMATAL model. Thirdly, we designed 18 simulation scenarios based on orthogonal test to dynamically predict the development trend of RECC in different conditions. Results show that: (1) From 2019 to 2030, the RECC of Huainan is generally on the rise. (2) In all simulation scenarios, test 12 is the most effective way of improving RECC. (3) The factors with the greatest influence on the simulation results are GDP, output value of secondary production, total expending on environmental protection, and coal production. This study provides a reference for the analysis method of RECC and the sustainable development of coal cities.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MS) is a group of complex medical conditions that can lead to serious cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases. According to the theory of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), MS can be divided into two main subtypes termed 'phlegm-dampness syndrome' (TSZE) and 'qi-yin deficiency syndrome' (QYLX). At present, the research into intestinal microbiota of different TCM syndromes of MS and its association with clinical manifestation is lacking. Materials and methods: Using 16S rRNA sequencing, we performed a cross-sectional analysis of human gut microbiota between two different TCM syndromes (QYLX and TSZE, n=60) of MS, and their differences with healthy participants (n=30). Results: We found that the QYLX and TSZE groups differ from the healthy control group in the overall gut microbiota composition, and some specific microbial taxa and functional pathways. Moreover, significantly differentially abundant taxa and distinct BMI-correlated taxa were observed between QYLX and TSZE groups, suggesting the potential contribution of gut microbiota to the distinction between the two TCM syndromes. The predicted functional profiles also showed considerable differences, especially pathways related to amino acid metabolism and lipopolysaccharide synthesis. Conclusion: Our study highlights the gut microbiota's contribution to the differentiation between two TCM syndromes of MS and may provide the rationale for adopting different microbiota-directed treatment strategies for different TCM syndromes of MS in the future.

Miniaturized lasing with dynamic manipulation is critical to the performance of compact and versatile photonic devices. However, it is still a challenge to manipulate the whispering gallery mode lasing modes dynamically. Here, we design the quasi-three-dimensional coupled cavity by a micromanipulation technique. The coupled cavity consists of two intersection polymer microfibers. The mode selection mechanism is demonstrated experimentally and theoretically in the coupled microfiber cavity. Dynamic manipulation from multiple modes to single-mode lasing is achieved by controlling the coupling strength, which can be quantitatively controlled by changing the coupling angle or the coupling distance. Our work provides a flexible alternative for the lasing mode modulation in the on-chip photonic integration.

An all-optical tunable whispering gallery mode (WGM) laser pumped by a laser diode is proposed. The laser is fabricated by filling a silica capillary with a light-emitting conjugated polymer solution. Based on the thermo-optic effect of the hydroxyl groups in the polymer and capillary, the effective refractive index of the WGM cavity changes by the auxiliary irradiation of the laser, and the wavelength of the WGM mode shifts correspondingly. The emission wavelength was continuously tuned over 13 nm with the irradiation power intensity changing from 0 to 22.41 W cm-2, showing a corresponding tuning rate of 0.58 nm W-1 cm-2. The wavelength tuning process has a fast response time that is within 2.8 s. It shows strong stability, with the output intensity showing no obvious attenuation after 100 minutes of operation. The proposed laser exhibits good repeatability, stability and high tuning efficiency, and could be applied as a light source for on-chip devices.

Microlasers hold great promise for the development of photonics and optoelectronics. At present, tunable microcavity lasers, especially regarding in situ dynamic tuning, are still the focus of research. In this study, we combined a 0.7Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.3PbTiO3 (PMN-PT) piezoelectric crystal with a Poly [9,9-dioctylfluorenyl-2,7-diyl] (PFO) microring cavity to realize a high-quality, electrically tunable, whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) laser. The dependence of the laser properties on the diameter of the microrings, including the laser spectrum and quality (Q) value, was investigated. It was found that with an increase in microring diameter, the laser emission redshifted, and the Q value increased. In addition, the device effectively achieved a blueshift under an applied electric field, and the wavelength tuning range was 0.71 nm. This work provides a method for in situ dynamic spectral modulation of microcavity lasers, and is expected to provide inspiration for the application of integrated photonics technology.

Chaotic cryptography as an important means for digital image encryption has become a great cryptographic project in the current information age. As a novel microcavity laser, a random laser (RL) has a natural advantage for a chaotic system, relying on its spectral randomness. Nevertheless, this encrypted image generally suffers from outline exposition when an unsuitable key from a single RL spectrum is employed. Herein, to realize reliable dual chaotic encryption, an internally integrated hybrid microcavity in random and whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) is reported. Within this coupled microcavity, the rhodamine-6G-doped inner-wall of the fiber serves as the gain medium and the optical cavities for WGM lasing; an RL mode is enabled by scattered particles and the gain medium (Rh6G). Interestingly, the smooth inner wall of the fiber with a high-quality (Q) factor and tight optical confinement make WGM lasing occur earlier than RL. What is more, a fast energy transfer process from the WGM laser to Ag nanoparticles and the resultant localized surface plasmon resonance effects from Ag NPs to RL jointly promote the output of the random laser. As a result, a free transformation from the WGM laser to RL is successfully modulated by varying the pump power alone, thus providing two initial values for dual chaos image encryption. This work provides an in-depth understanding of a WGM-random inner-coupled cavity and promotes the application of a hybrid microcavity in the field of information security.

A cryogenic cesium atomic fountain clock is a novel clock with the microwave cavity and atomic free flight region placed in liquid nitrogen. On the one hand, the blackbody radiation shift is reduced at cryogenic temperature. On the other hand, the vacuum in the atomic free flight region is optimized, and the background gas collision shift reduced. The microwave resonant cavity is the most important unit in a cryogenic cesium atomic fountain clock. Through theoretical and simulative investigation, this study designs the configuration and dimensions for an optimized microwave cavity. Concurrently, experiments reveal the effects of temperature, pressure, humidity, and other factors on the resonant frequency of the microwave cavity. Combining the theoretical and experimental study, we obtain the resonant frequency difference between the microwave cavity in a cryogenic vacuum and at room temperature and ambient pressure. By subtracting this frequency difference, we adjust the microwave cavity for room temperature and ambient pressure, then vacuumize and immerse it in liquid nitrogen for verification and fine tuning. Finally, we determine that the microwave cavity resonant frequency deviation from the clock transition frequency is 10 kHz with an unloaded quality factor of 25 000, which meets the application requirements of the cryogenic cesium atomic fountain clock.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the potential active components and corresponding target herb pairs of Radix Ginseng (Renshen) and Radix Bupleuri (Chaihu) in the treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through network pharmacology and in vitro experiments. METHODS: The active components and potential targets of the herb pair of Renshen and Chaihu were screened through a network database system, and Venn analysis was performed with the obtained NAFLD targets. The intersecting targets were analysed for gene ontology (GO) functions and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genome (KEGG) pathways, and a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was generated. Cytoscape software was used to construct active component-target networks of the Renshen and Chaihu herb pair. Free fatty acids were added to the HepG2 cell line to create high-fat models that were treated with different concentrations of stigmasterol. The effect of stigmasterol on the lipid metabolism in HepG2 cells and PPARγ-knockdown cells was determined by oil red O staining, Nile red staining, and TG level. PPARγ and UCP-1 mRNA, and protein expression levels were detected by qRT-PCR and Western blot analyses, respectively. RESULTS: Twenty active components obtained from the Renshen and Chaihu herb pair were identified. The herb pair active component-target network showed that both Renshen and Chaihu contained stigmasterol and kaempferol as active components. The PPI network comprised 63 protein nodes. GO enrichment analysis and KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that the targets were mainly involved in lipid metabolism. Eight core targets were identified: AKT1, PPARG, MAPK3, TNF, TP53, SIRT1, STAT3, and PPARA. In vitro experiments demonstrated that stigmasterol reduced lipid accumulation and TG levels in HepG2 cells, and the mechanism may have been related to the activation of the PPARγ-UCP-1 signalling pathway. CONCLUSION: This study preliminarily illustrated the potential components and corresponding core targets of the Renshen and Chaihu herb pair in treating NAFLD. The effect of stigmasterol on the PPARγ-UCP-1 signalling pathway in enhancing lipid metabolism may represent one of the mechanisms of the Renshen and Chaihu herb pair in the treatment of NAFLD. The results provide new evidence and research insights to reveal the roles of Renshen and Chaihu in the management of NAFLD.

As the main driving force for the economic development of East China, the economic development of Anhui has been in good state in recent years. In 2019, the GDP of Anhui Province has reached 3711.4 billion yuan with an increase of 7.5% over the previous year. With the rapid economic development, many environmental problems such as resource depletion, vegetation degradation, and air quality decline have gradually increased. The ecological environment is an important foundation for social and economic development. To examine the status of regional ecological security, this study builds a comprehensive evaluation index system based on the "pressure-state-response" (PSR) framework and uses the entropy weight method to determine the index weight. Then the normal cloud model is introduced to dynamically calculate the ecological security status of Anhui Province from 2010 to 2019. The results show that (1) the ecological security status of Anhui has improved significantly and reached a safe status in 2019. (2) The ecological security status of 16 prefecture-level cities has also been improved, and the ecological security status of these cities is at level III and above except Huainan. There are significant differences in internal development, and the ecological security status of the southern region is ahead of the northern and central region. (3) From the perspective of the criterion level, the pressure and response subsystems develop faster, and the state subsystem develops more slowly. Therefore, it is necessary to pay more attention to the impact of the state subsystem on the overall development of ecological security in the future.

Second-order Zeeman frequency shift is one of the major systematic factors affecting the frequency uncertainty performance of cesium atomic fountain clock. Second-order Zeeman frequency shift is calculated by experimentally measuring the central frequency of the (1,1) or (-1,-1) magnetically sensitive Ramsey transition. The low-frequency transition method can be used to measure the magnetic field strength and to predict the central fringe of (1,1) or (-1,-1) magnetically sensitive Ramsey transition. In this paper, we deduce the formula for magnetic field measurement using the low-frequency transition method and measured the magnetic field distribution of 4 cm inside the Ramsey cavity and 32 cm along the flight region experimentally. The result shows that the magnetic field fluctuation is less than 1 nT. The influence of low-frequency pulse signal duration on the accuracy of magnetic field measurement is studied and the optimal low-frequency pulse signal duration is determined. The central fringe of (-1,-1) magnetically sensitive Ramsey transition can be predicted by using a numerical integrating of the magnetic field "map". Comparing the predicted central fringe with that identified by Ramsey method, the frequency difference between these two is, at most, a fringe width of 0.3. We apply the experimentally measured central frequency of the (-1,-1) Ramsey transition to the Breit-Rabi formula, and the second-order Zeeman frequency shift is calculated as 131.03 × 10-15, with the uncertainty of 0.10 × 10-15.

Recent studies indicated that regulatory B cells (Bregs) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant signaling pathway play important roles in the pathogenesis of chronic graft-versus-host disease (cGVHD). Mangiferin (MA), a polyphenol compound, has been reported to activate Nrf2/antioxidant-responsive element (ARE) signaling pathway. This study was aimed to investigate the effects of MA on Bregs and Nrf2 antioxidant signaling in murine splenic mononuclear cells (MNCs) in vitro. Our results revealed that MA could increase the Bregs level in murine splenic MNCs. Moreover, MA up-regulated the expression of Bregs-associated immunosuppressive factor interleukin-10 (IL-10) by activating the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) and extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling in murine splenic MNCs. Meanwhile, MA inhibited the proinflammatory cytokines IL-2 and interferon-γ (INF-γ) at both mRNA and protein levels. MA also enhanced the transcription and protein expression of Nrf2 and NADPH quinine oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), whereas decreased that of Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1 (Keap1) in murine splenic MNCs. Moreover, MA promoted the proliferation and inhibited the apoptosis of murine splenic MNCs. These results suggested that MA exerts immunosuppressive effects by upregulating the Bregs level, activating the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, and inhibiting the expression of pro-immunoinflammatory factors. MA, as a natural immunomodulatory and anti-inflammatory agent, may have a potential role in the prophylaxis and treatment of cGVHD.

We report the development of a laser gas analyzer that measures gas concentrations at a data rate of 100 Hz. This fast data rate helps eddy covariance calculations for gas fluxes in turbulent high wind speed environments. The laser gas analyzer is based on derivative laser absorption spectroscopy and set for measurements of water vapor (H2O, at wavelength ~1392 nm) and carbon dioxide (CO2, at ~2004 nm). This instrument, in combination with an ultrasonic anemometer, has been tested experimentally in both marine and terrestrial environments. First, we compared the accuracy of results between the laser gas analyzer and a high-quality commercial instrument with a max data rate of 20 Hz. We then analyzed and compared the correlation of H2O flux results at data rates of 100 Hz and 20 Hz in both high and low wind speeds to verify the contribution of high frequency components. The measurement results show that the contribution of 100 Hz data rate to flux calculations is about 11% compared to that measured with 20 Hz data rate, in an environment with wind speed of ~10 m/s. Therefore, it shows that the laser gas analyzer with high detection frequency is more suitable for measurements in high wind speed environments.

Pathologists generally pan, focus, zoom and scan tissue biopsies either under microscopes or on digital images for diagnosis. With the rapid development of whole-slide digital scanners for histopathology, computer-assisted digital pathology image analysis has attracted increasing clinical attention. Thus, the working style of pathologists is also beginning to change. Computer-assisted image analysis systems have been developed to help pathologists perform basic examinations. This paper presents a novel lightweight detection framework for automatic tumor detection in whole-slide histopathology images. We develop the Double Magnification Combination (DMC) classifier, which is a modified DenseNet-40 to make patch-level predictions with only 0.3 million parameters. To improve the detection performance of multiple instances, we propose an improved adaptive sampling method with superpixel segmentation and introduce a new heuristic factor, local sampling density, as the convergence condition of iterations. In postprocessing, we use a CNN model with 4 convolutional layers to regulate the patch-level predictions based on the predictions of adjacent sampling points and use linear interpolation to generate a tumor probability heatmap. The entire framework was trained and validated using the dataset from the Camelyon16 Grand Challenge and Hubei Cancer Hospital. In our experiments, the average AUC was 0.95 in the test set for pixel-level detection.
