Transition metals and carbohydrates: the methyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-diazo-2,3-dideoxy-alpha-D-mannopyranoside skeleton as building block for new chiral nitrogen chelates.

This paper describes a straightforward strategy for the synthesis of new nitrogen chelates by employing the chirality of readily available sugars. Thus, diimino and diamino ligands can be attained easily by using the methyl-4,6-O-benzylidene-2,3-diazo-2,3-dideoxy-alpha-D-mannopyranoside skeleton. The coordinating ability of one ligand has also been assessed by preparing a square-planar palladium complex [PdCl2(N,N-chelate)].

Synthesis and biological activity of five-coordinate platinum(II) complexes including organotin fragments.

The synthesis and characterization of two five-coordinate platinum(II) complexes of general formula [PtCl(SnMe(n)Cl3-n)(2,9-Me2-1,10-phenanthroline) (diethylfumarate)] (n = 1, 2) are described. The bimetallic species were tested on the neuroblastoma cell line SK-N-BE and a considerable inhibition of cellular proliferation was detected; the bimetallic species were also able to induce neuronal differentiation, as did retinoic acid, a well-known neuroblastoma differentiating agent.

[The treatment of gastrointestinal infections with ciprofloxacin]. / Trattamento delle infezioni gastro-intestinali con ciprofloxacina.

The authors have evaluated the efficacy and tolerability of ciprofloxacin, a new broad-spectrum fluor-quinolone, in the therapy of gastrointestinal infections. The authors have studied 24 patients suffering from above-mentioned infections clinically diagnosed (11 microbiologically diagnosed too). All the patients took ciprofloxacin tablets 500 mg b.i.d. for 10 days (average). All the patients were restored to health and the tolerability was excellent.
