RESUMEN
Introduction and objectives: Although the ophthalmic manifestations appear to be associated with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), there is not enough evidence. Hence, the aim of this study was to determine the various types and frequency of ophthalmic manifestations in patients recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection in Mexico. Material and methods: This retrospective, observational and descriptive study included all patients recovered from SARS-CoV-2 infection attending the tertiary level hospital of Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) from June 2020 to June 2022. During the hospital admission of patients, the demographic data such age, name, gender was recorded. Ophthalmologic examination was performed under torchlight by an ophthalmologist in the Department of Ophthalmology from IMSS. Data was compiled and statistically analyzed using Fisher's exact test and Spearman correlation. Results: A total of 3,081 SARS-CoV-2-positive patients were recorded, of which 318 (10.32%) met the inclusion criteria. Of them, 21 (6.60%) had ophthalmic manifestations and the female-to-male ratio was 1.6:1. The mean age (±SD) was 47.95 ± 15.27 years and the median (interquartile range) time from the diagnosis of COVID-19, as defined by positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-PCR testing, to detection of the ophthalmic manifestation was 31 (142) days. The most common ocular manifestation was orbital mucormycosis (23.80%). Interestingly, the presence of ophthalmic manifestations was not associated with severe COVID-19 (p = 0.665). Conclusions: The ophthalmic manifestations are infrequent in patients recovered from severe COVID-19. Nevertheless, further large sample studies are needed to confirm these findings.

The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of markers of pathogenicity islands that may be informative to detect the virulent PAI carriers of clinical and environmental strains of Aeromonas spp. isolated in Mexico. virB2, virB9 and virB11 genes were found in Aeromonas strains isolated from environmental and clinical sources while cagE and tfc16 genes were only in strains of environmental origin. Having performed the wide screening presented in this study, we now have a set of strains to map and confirm the presence of a pathogenicity island in Aeromonas strains isolated in Mexico.

Mineralogical processes taking place close to equilibrium, or with very slow kinetics, are difficult to quantify precisely. The determination of ultraslow dissolution/precipitation rates would reveal characteristic timing associated with these processes that are important at geological scale. We have designed an advanced high-resolution white-beam phase-shift interferometry microscope to measure growth rates of crystals at very low supersaturation values. To test this technique, we have selected the giant gypsum crystals of Naica ore mines in Chihuahua, Mexico, a challenging subject in mineral formation. They are thought to form by a self-feeding mechanism driven by solution-mediated anhydrite-gypsum phase transition, and therefore they must be the result of an extremely slow crystallization process close to equilibrium. To calculate the formation time of these crystals we have measured the growth rates of the {010} face of gypsum growing from current Naica waters at different temperatures. The slowest measurable growth rate was found at 55 °C, 1.4 ± 0.2 × 10(-5) nm/s, the slowest directly measured normal growth rate for any crystal growth process. At higher temperatures, growth rates increase exponentially because of decreasing gypsum solubility and higher kinetic coefficient. At 50 °C neither growth nor dissolution was observed indicating that growth of giant crystals of gypsum occurred at Naica between 58 °C (gypsum/anhydrite transition temperature) and the current temperature of Naica waters, confirming formation temperatures determined from fluid inclusion studies. Our results demonstrate the usefulness of applying advanced optical techniques in laboratory experiments to gain a better understanding of crystal growth processes occurring at a geological timescale.

The search of an alternative method to the rh-TSH to stimulate endogenous rising of TSH previous to thyroid ablation with 131I in patients with CDT operated. The purpose of the work began in 2001 in Paraguay using multiple dose of TRH IV (200µU of TRH Threlea® Argentina) to stimulate the own TSH of patients previous to 131I ablation. It is known that the injection of an unique dose of 200µU of TRH IV achieves the increasing of the endogenous TSH in patients with differentiated thyroid carcinoma up to 30 - 35 mUI/L at the end of the first hour, however, there is not statistical data of the effects of multiple injections of TRH applied IV or IM in operated patients of DTC previous to the ablation with 131I. Since 2001-2007, two hundred patients operated for DTC were studied by this method, 120 were papillary cancer and 80 follicular cancer. One hundred eighty did not have distance metastasis and 20 presented metastasis in thorax, pelvis and dorsal spine. Total thyroidectomy was carried out in 120 and total lobectomy with itsmectomy plus hemilobectomy of the other lobe in 80. All were treated with ablative dose of 100 mCi (3.700 mBq) of 131I, except those with metastasis which receive 150 mCi (5.500 mBq) with the previous stimulation with TRH IV with two daily dose for three days with previous suspension of L-tiroxine for 25 days and replaced by triyodotiroxine 25 mcg/d for 15 days with suspension 10 days before the stimulation with TRH and treatment with 131I. Two patients with metastasis received another extra dose of 150 mCi (5.550 MBq) 6 months later. One presented uptake in thyroid bed one year after the ablation received a new ablative dose of 100 mCi (3.700 mBq) of 131I. All the patients were interned and isolated by 48 hours. Twenty feminine patients had later pregnancies in 1-3 years after their ablative dose with healthy products. TSH was measured during the stimulation with TRH in all patients...

Study of group of 61 patients, nephrectomized as a result of various diseases and who before and three months after surgery underwent blood pressure, effective renal plasma flow (EPFF) and unilateral renal function determinations in order to verify the compensating ability of the remaining kidney. Effective renal plasma flow was determined by a single injection and removal of six serial blood samples with 125-I-Hippuran. Unilateral renal function was determined from the relative uptake of 99mTc-DMSA 24 hours after injection. The patients were divided into four groups according to their overall and unilateral renal function as well as the presence or absence of hypertension. Patients with normal EPFF and symmetrical renal function showed a significantly increase in the function of the remaining kidney after surgery (p < 0.001). Patients with normal or slightly reduced EPFF (< 10%) and highly asymmetrical unilateral function as well as those with decreased EPFF (> 10%) and symmetrical or asymmetrical unilateral renal function did not increased the function of the remaining kidney after nephrectomy, and hypertensive patients whose blood pressure returned to normal values after nephrectomy had a decreased function of the remaining kidney after surgery (< 0.001). It is concluded that it is possible to predict the functional behaviour of the remaining kidney after nephrectomy, and that the compensating ability will basically depend on the previously existing (overall and unilateral) renal function as well as the presence or absence of hypertension.
