RESUMEN

A relationship between the consumption of fish preserved by various household methods and incidence of chronic gastric diseases and stomach cancer in the aborigines of the Far East is suggested. Laboratory tests showed that such toxic products of lipid oxidation as peroxides and aldehydes accumulate during storage of fish. The data on their carcinogenecity is inconclusive. However, it is suggested that regular intake of toxic products of lpid oxidation may cause chronic gastric disease which in turn may pave the way for cancer development.
