RESUMEN
PIP: Selected results are presented from the 1981 census of India. Data are included on population size and growth, geographic distribution by state and union territory, population density, and urban population growth. Some comparative data from earlier censuses are also provided.^ieng

Seismic velocities measured in rock deformed in the laboratory show excellent agreement with theoretical predictions of the effects of crack growth during dilatancy. Under appropriate conditions dilatancy was observed to produce a drop in the ratio of the seismic compressional velocity to the seismic shear velocity both by the mechanism of undersaturation and by a liquid-gas phase transition.
RESUMEN
A possible explanation for the successful prediction of the 1975 Haicheng earthquake is that the earthquake was triggered by a deformation front that propagated 1,000 km through NE China at a velocity of about 110 km yr(-1). The various phenomena that were used to predict the earthquake can be explained by the deformation front.
RESUMEN
Source parameters of stick-slip friction events measured in the laboratory show particle and rupture propagation velocities which are similar to those observed for earthquakes and inferred from seismic source theory. This dynamic similarity strongly supports the idea that stick-slip is the mechanism for shallow earthquakes.
