RESUMEN

Data from 13 datasets from 4 trials on the effect of a novel consensus bacterial 6-phytase variant (PhyG) on the apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of amino acids (AA) in broilers were used to model AID AA responses. The datasets were obtained from 3 trial locations (New Zealand, Australia and United States) and collectively incorporated variations in diet composition (feedstuff composition, phytate-P (PP) level, limestone solubility), feed form (mash or pellet), bird genetics (strain), and age at sampling (11-35 d of age). In total, 384 observations were analyzed. First, the relationships between AID of AA (as coefficients) and increasing phytase dose level from 0 to 4,000 FTU/kg were evaluated across all datasets using exponential curve fitting. Second, the percentage unit change in AID of AA at each phytase dose level from baseline (basal diet [BD] without phytase) was calculated separately for each dataset and the data then modeled together using exponential curve fitting. The model-predicted mean coefficient of AID of total AA in basal diets was 0.76 (range 0.56 [Cys] to 0.83 [Glu]), which was increased by PhyG to 0.80 and 0.81 at 2,000 and 4,000 FTU/kg, respectively. Exponential increases in the percentage unit improvement in AID of 18 individual and of total AA with increasing phytase dose level were evident (P < 0.05). Improvements (vs. BD) at 2,000 FTU/kg and 4,000 FTU/kg, respectively, were greatest for Cys (+9.2 and +11.0% units), Met (after deduction of synthetic Met, +8.4 and +9.0% units), and Thr (after deduction of synthetic Thr, +6.2 and +7.3% units). The data demonstrated consistent improvements in the AID of AA by the phytase. The modeling results generated from data gathered from birds sampled at different ages and from different dietary settings with correction of synthetic AA for Lys, Met, Thr, and Trp, enabled a more accurate prediction of the digestible AA contribution from the diet by this novel phytase. This will allow diet-specific AA matrix recommendations to be made in commercial feed formulations.

1. The effect of increasing the dose level of a novel consensus bacterial 6-phytase variant on apparent ileal digestibility (AID) of phosphorus (P), phytic acid (inositol hexa-phosphate, IP6) and ileal IP6 degradation profile was studied in diets containing varying phytate-P (PP) levels.2. Ross 308, one-day-old males (n = 1,800) were allocated to cages (20 birds/cage, six cages/treatment) in a completely randomised design employing a 3 × 5 factorial arrangement (three PP levels: 2.45 (low) 2.95 (medium) and 3.45 g/kg (high); five dose levels of phytase (PhyG): 0, 500, 1,000, 2,000 and 4,000 FTU/kg). Phased diets were based on wheat, corn, soybean meal, rapeseed meal and rice bran (d 0 to 10; 2.60 g/kg digestible P, 7.6 g/kg calcium (Ca); d 11 to 21; 2.10 g/kg digestible P, 6.4 g/kg Ca). Ileal digesta was collected on d 21 for determination of P, IP6 and IP-esters content. Data were analysed by factorial ANOVA; means separation was achieved using Tukey's HSD test.3. Increasing PP reduced AID of IP6 and sum of IP3-6 (%) (P < 0.05) but absolute P-release (g/kg diet) above NC was increased (P < 0.05) at high vs. low PP. Increasing phytase dose exponentially increased (P < 0.001) AID IP6, sum of IP3-6 (%) and digestible IP3-6-P g/kg diet (P < 0.001). AID P was increased but there was an interaction with PP level (P < 0.001). Ileal accumulation of IP5-3-P was universally low with PhyG at ≥1,000 FTU/kg (<0.06 g/100 g DM). At 2,000 and 4,000 FTU/kg, AID IP6 was 97.2, 92.7, 92.6% and 100, 97.2, 97.1%, respectively, at low, medium and high PP. At 2,000 FTU/kg, phytate-P release estimated as the increase (above NC) in ileal digestible sum of IP3-6-P in the diet was 2.26, 2.59 and 3.10 g/kg in low, medium and high PP, respectively.4. The data demonstrated that the novel phytase was effective in breaking down phytate to low IP-esters in diets with varied PP content but the optimal dose level for maximising P-release may differ in diets with varying PP content.

A study evaluating apparent digestibilities of protein and amino acids and their corresponding digestion rates in four small intestinal sites in broiler chickens was completed to further investigate dietary optimisation via synchronised nutrient digestion and absorption. A total of 288 male Ross 308 broiler chickens were offered semi-purified diets with eight protein-rich feedstuffs, including; blood meal (BM), plasma protein meal (PPM), cold pressed (CCM) and expeller-pressed (ECM) canola meal, high (SBM HCP) and low (SBM LCP) crude protein soybean meals, lupins and peas. Diets were iso-caloric, iso-nitrogenous and the test ingredient was the sole source of dietary nitrogen. Each diet was offered to 6 bioassay cages with 6 birds per cage from day 21 to 28 post hatch. On day 28, all birds were euthanized and digesta samples were collected from the proximal jejunum, distal jejunum, proximal ileum and distal ileum to determine apparent protein and amino acids digestibility coefficients, digestion rates and potential digestible protein and amino acids. Dietary protein source significantly influenced energy utilisation, nitrogen retention, apparent protein (N) digestibilities, digestion rates and potential digestible protein along the small intestine. Diets containing BM and SBM LCP exhibited the highest protein digestion rate and potential digestible protein, respectively. Digestibility coefficients and disappearance rates of the majority of amino acids in four sections of the small intestine were influenced by dietary protein source (P < 0.01) and blood meal had the fastest protein digestion rate. In general, jejunal amino acid and protein digestibilities were more variable in comparison to ileal digestibilities, and the differences in protein and amino acid disappearance rates were more pronounced between types of feedstuffs than sources of similar feedstuffs.

RESUMEN

1.The objective of the present study was to rank the importance of the following dietary factors; canola meal, wheat, whole barley, digestible lysine, phytate-P, calcium, available P, sodium and three NSP-degrading feed enzymes. Their influence on growth performance, gastro-intestinal tract parameters, energy utilisation, ileal N digestibility and disappearance rates were determined via the Plackett-Burman design in broiler chickens offered phytase-supplemented diets. 2. The eleven dietary factors were assigned two levels in the Plackett-Burman design matrix. The resulting twelve dietary treatments were offered to six replicates per treatment (six birds per cage) with a total of 468 male Ross 308 broiler chicks from 7 to 28 d post-hatch. 3. Increasing digestible lysine levels improved weight gain by 15.6% (P < 0.001) and gain:feed by 9.36% (P < 0.001). Increasing calcium levels reduced weight gain by 6.36% (P < 0.001) and gain:feed by 2.60% (P < 0.001). The high calcium level increased gizzard pH from 2.78 to 3.01 (P < 0.005). Whole barley significantly increased relative gizzard weights and contents, pancreas weights and both ileal N digestibility coefficients (0.774 versus 0.803; P < 0.001) and ileal N disappearance rates (23. 3 versus 24.5 g/bird/day; P < 0.001). 4. Overall, digestible lysine level and calcium level were identified as the most influential dietary factors to influence growth performance of broilers offered phytase-supplemented diets, which hold implications for practical diet formulations.

1. The two red grain sorghums were extensively characterised. Kafirin, polyphenolic compounds, free, conjugated and bound phenolic acids, phytate concentrations and starch pasting profiles were determined. 2. The experiment consisted of a 2 × 4 factorial array of dietary treatments comprising two red sorghum varieties (Tiger and Block I) ground through 4 hammer-mill screen sizes (2.0, 3.2, 4.8 6.0 mm) prior to incorporation into nutritionally equivalent diets. Eight steam-pelleted dietary treatments were each offered to 7 replicates (6 male Ross 308 birds per cage) from 7 to 28 d post-hatch. 3. Effects of dietary treatments on growth performance, relative gizzard and pancreas weights, nutrient utilisation, apparent starch and protein (N) digestibility coefficients and disappearance rates from 4 small intestinal segments were determined. 4. The 2.0-mm hammer-mill screen generated an average geometric mean particle size of 794 µm and the 6.0-mm screen a mean particle size of 1405 µm. However, hammer-mill screen size did not influence weight gain or FCR. The 6.0-mm screen size generated significantly higher starch and protein (N) digestibility coefficients in the distal jejunum and distal ileum than the 2.0-mm hammer-mill screen. 5. Tiger sorghum was superior to Block I sorghum, as significant advantages were observed for feed conversion ratios (3.25%), AME (0.37 MJ), ME:GE ratios (4.15%), AMEn (0.53 MJ), distal ileal starch digestibility coefficients (2.46%) and protein (N) digestibility coefficients in the distal jejunum (4.66%), proximal ileum (1.96%) and distal ileum (2.16%). The inferior Block I sorghum contained more kafirin (67.1 versus 51.3 g/kg), phytate (9.79 versus 8.40 g/kg), total phenolic compounds (4.68 versus 4.12 mg GAE/g), flavan-4-ols (7.98 versus 5.04 ABS/ml/g), total phenolic acids (554 versus 402 µg/g) and total ferulic acid (375 versus 281 µg/g) in comparison to Tiger sorghum.

1. The objective was to compare three whole grain (WG) inclusion levels (7.5, 15 and 30%) offered to broiler chickens by three modes of WG incorporation: (i) pre-pellet WG inclusion, (ii) post-pellet WG inclusion as a blend of WG and pelleted concentrate and (iii) post-pellet WG inclusion where WG and pelleted concentrate were provided in separate feed trays against a ground-grain, wheat-based control diet. 2. Ten dietary treatments were offered to 6 replicate cages (6 birds per cage) of male Ross 308 chickens from 7 to 28 d post-hatch. The effects of treatment on relative gizzard weights, gizzard contents, pancreatic weights and pH of gizzard digesta were monitored. Parameters of growth performance, nutrient utilisation (apparent metabolisable energy [AME], metabolisable to gross energy [ME:GE] ratios, nitrogen [N] retention and N-corrected AME [AMEn]), apparent starch and protein (N) digestibility coefficients and disappearance rates in for small intestinal segments and concentrations of free amino acids in plasma taken from the anterior mesenteric vein were determined. 3. Whole grain feeding (WGF) did not influence weight gain, but 30% post-pellet blended and 15 and 30% post-pellet separated treatments significantly depressed (P < 0.05) feed intakes while the 30% post-pellet separated treatment improved (P < 0.01) feed conversion ratios (FCR). WGF regimes significantly increased relative gizzard weights. 4. Overall, WGF generated profound responses in AME, ME:GE ratios, N retention and AMEn that were highly correlated with relative gizzard weights. In general, WGF improved starch and protein (N) digestibilities and again there were some correlations with these outcomes and relative gizzard weights. 5. Post-pellet WG inclusions where WG and pelleted concentrate were offered separately provided chickens with the opportunity to choice feed. Birds showed a preference for the relatively high-protein pelleted concentrate and at 30% WG, this resulted in an improvement in FCR of 7.69% (1.260 versus 1.365; P < 0.001) relative to the ground-grain control diet.

A total of 240 Ross 308 broilers were used to investigate the effect of sodium (1·5 or 2·5 g/kg), phytate-P (0 or 3·2 g/kg), and phytase (0 or 1000 FTU/kg; 2x2x2 factorial) on endogenous amino acid flow using the enzyme-hydrolysed casein method. The ingestion of phytate increased endogenous amino acid flow (∼30%) compared with the phytate-free control diets. Phytase reduced endogenous amino acid flow only when fed in concert with phytate, resulting in a significant phytate x phytase interaction. Increasing dietary sodium concentration from 1·5 to 2·5 g/kg reduced endogenous amino acid flow by around 10%. This reduction of endogenous flow was particularly evident in diets which contained phytate, resulting in a significant sodium x phytate interaction for several amino acids, including Thr and Ser. Further, high sodium concentrations muted the effect of phytase resulting in a significant sodium x phytase interaction for some amino acids. The concentration of Asp, Thr, Ser and some other amino acids was increased in the endogenous protein in response to the ingestion of phytate. Both sodium and phytase essentially restored the composition of endogenous protein to that of the phytate-free control. Further, as both sodium and phytase had similar effects there were significant interactions between sodium and phytase for most amino acids, such that one was only effective in the absence of the other. These data confirm previous reports that phytate is a nutritional aggressor, causing quantitative and qualitative changes in endogenous protein flow. However, this is the first report which has shown that dietary sodium concentrations play a role in the severity of this antinutritional effect and consequently may blunt the efficacy of exogenous phytase. The mechanism is obscure, though it has been previously demonstrated that sodium can disrupt phytate:protein complexes, thus mitigating one of the mechanisms by which phytate exerts its antinutritional effect.

1. The effect of potassium diformate (KDF) on mortality, growth performance, microbial populations, pH and short chain fatty acid concentrations in the intestinal tract of broiler chickens challenged with necrotic enteritis was investigated. 2. An experiment with 1050 Cobb male broiler chickens was conducted from 1 to 35 d of age. There were 7 treatment groups: (1) unchallenged negative control, (2) unchallenged KDF (4.50 g/kg feed), (3) challenged negative control, (4) challenged positive control (100 ppm monensin and 45 ppm Zn-bacitracin), and (5) to (7) challenged KDF (inclusion rate 2.25, 4.50 and 6.75 g/kg feed, respectively). 3. The necrotic enteritis challenge caused significant growth depression except in the challenged positive control group. Inclusion of KDF in feed had no significant effect on weight gain or feed conversion ratio, neither under challenged nor unchallenged conditions. Necrotic-enteritis-related mortalities were reduced in response to the positive control feed and KDF at 2.25 and 4.50 g/kg rates, but with no effect at the 6.75 g/kg rate. 4. There was no effect of KDF on Clostridium perfringens numbers in jejunum during the necrotic enteritis challenge (d 15). Post challenge (d 35), 4.5 g/kg KDF reduced the number of C. perfringens and Enterobacteria in jejunum compared with the negative control group. 5. Intestinal pH was not affected by adding KDF to the feed. The challenge reduced jejunum pH compared with the unchallenged treatment groups and challenged positive control group. 6. Chickens fed the KDF diets had detectable concentrations of formic acid in the jejunum. There was a tendency towards higher concentrations of acetic acid and lactic acid in the small intestine of unchallenged birds, whereas challenged birds had higher concentrations of butyric acid in the caeca. 7. It is concluded that KDF holds promise as an agent to control necrotic enteritis in broiler chickens and it may be possible to enhance the efficacy of KDF by manipulating dietary properties that may influence the dissociation kinetics of KDF in the gut.

The effects of phytic acid and 2 sources of exogenous phytase (bacterial vs. fungal) on the flow of endogenous amino acids at the terminal ileum of broilers were assessed using the enzyme-hydrolyzed casein method. Phytic acid (as the sodium salt) was included in a purified diet at 8.5 and 14.5 g/kg, and each diet was fed without or with a fungal (Aspergillus niger-derived) or a bacterial (Escherichia coli-derived) microbial phytase at 500 phytase units/kg of diet. Increasing the concentration of phytic acid in the diet from 8.5 to 14.5 g/kg increased (P < 0.001) the flow of all measured amino acids by an average of 68%, with a range from 17% for proline to 145% for phenylalanine. The flow of endogenous aspartic acid, serine, glutamic acid, glycine, leucine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and histidine were increased by more than the mean, indicating changes in the composition of endogenous protein in response to the presence of higher concentrations of phytic acid. Supplementation of both phytases reduced (P < 0.001) the flow of endogenous amino acids, but the reduction (P = 0.06) was greater for the bacterial phytase compared with the fungal phytase. These data suggest that a substantial part of the amino acid and energy responses observed following phytase supplementation in broiler chickens stems from reduced endogenous amino acid flows and that the capacity of different phytases to counteract the antinutritive properties of phytic acid vary.

The possible interaction between dietary electrolyte balance (DEB=Na+K-Cl, mEq/kg of diet) and microbial phytase on the performance and nutrient utilization of broiler starters and litter quality was examined in this study. A 4 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments was used with 4 levels of DEB (150, 225, 300, and 375 mEq/kg of diet) and 2 levels of phytase (0 and 500 phytase units/kg of diet). Experimental diets were based on corn, soybean meal, and canola meal and were formulated to contain a nonphytate P level of 3 g/kg. The DEB levels were altered by the use of sodium bicarbonate and ammonium chloride. Each diet was offered to 6 replicates of 8 birds each from d 1 to 21. Increasing the DEB values from 150 to 300 mEq/kg had no effect (P>0.05) on the weight gains and feed per gain, but the gains were lowered (P<0.05) and the feed per gain was increased (P<0.05) at 375 mEq/kg. Feed intake was unaffected (P>0.05) by DEB levels. Supplemental phytase improved (P<0.05) the weight gains and feed intake at all DEB levels. Feed per gain was lowered (P<0.05) by phytase addition, but a tendency for a DEB x phytate interaction (P=0.06) was also observed, indicating that the responses to phytase may be affected by DEB level. The responses in feed per gain were greater at the lowest DEB level, and phytase addition had no effect on feed per gain at the highest DEB level. Dietary electrolyte balance levels had no effect on the AME(n) and ileal N digestibility to 300 mEq/kg, but lowered (P<0.05) both criteria at 375 mEq/kg. Phytase addition improved (P<0.05) the AME(n) and ileal N digestibility. The improvements in AME(n) with 500 U/kg of phytase addition in 150, 225, and 275 mEq/kg DEB were 53, 60, and 38 kcal/kg of DM, respectively. The main effect of DEB was significant (P<0.05) only for the ileal availability of Na and Cl, whereas added phytase influenced (P<0.05) the ileal availability of Ca, P, Na, K, and Cl. The effects of DEB were significant (P<0.05) for apparent ileal digestibility of all amino acids, except Ala (P=0.09), Arg, Met, and cystine. In general, the digestibilities of amino acids were unaffected when the DEB level was increased from 150 to 225 mEq/kg of diet, but decreased at the 300 and 375 mEq/kg levels. Phytase addition improved (P<0.06 to 0.05) ileal digestibility of all amino acids, except Met and Tyr. Increasing DEB had adverse effects on excreta scores and DM content. Phytase addition, however, had no effect on excreta quality. The overall results of the present study suggest that variability in phytase responses in nutrient utilization may be explained, in part, by differences in dietary electrolyte levels.

RESUMEN

An experiment was conducted to examine the effects of adding microbial phytase (Natuphos) on the performance in broilers fed a phosphorus-adequate, lysine-deficient diet. A wheat-soybean meal-sorghum-based diet, containing 1.00% lysine and 0.45% nonphytate phosphorus, was supplemented with L-lysine monochloride to provide 1.06, 1.12, or 1.18% lysine or with 125, 250, 375, 500, 750, or 1,000 phytase units (FTU)/kg diet. Each diet was fed to six pens of 10 chicks each from Day 7 to 28 posthatching. Addition of lysine to the lysine-deficient diet linearly increased (P < 0.001) weight gain and gain per feed of broilers. The response in weight gain to added phytase reached a plateau at 500 FTU/kg diet (quadratic effect, P < 0.001). Phytase had no effect on gain per feed to 250 FTU/kg diet and then increased (quadratic effect, P < 0.05) with further additions. Assuming that the observed responses in weight gain and gain per feed to added phytase were due to the release of lysine alone and by solving linear or nonlinear response equations of lysine and phytase levels, the lysine equivalency value was calculated to be 500 FTU phytase/kg diet = 0.074% lysine. Addition of increasing levels of supplemental phytase to the lysine-deficient diet improved (P < 0.001) the digestibilities of nitrogen and all amino acids. Phytase also increased the AME, and the response reached a plateau at 750 FTU/kg diet (quadratic effect, P < 0.001). These results showed that amino acid and energy responses are responsible for the performance improvements observed when phytase was added to a wheat-soybean meal-sorghum-based diet.

1. Male broilers (n=900) were fed on wheat-sorghum-soyabean meal based diets containing 3 concentrations of phytic acid (10.4, 13.2 and 15.7 g/kg; equivalent to 2.9, 3.7 and 4.4 g/kg phytate P), 2 concentrations of non-phytate (or available) phosphorus (2.3 and 4.5 g/kg) and 3 concentrations of microbial phytase (0, 400 and 800 FTU/kg) from day 7 to 25 post-hatch. The dietary concentrations of phytic acid were manipulated by the inclusion of rice pollards. All diets contained celite (20 g/kg) as a source of acid-insoluble ash. 2. The apparent metabolisable energy (AME) concentrations of the diets were determined using a classical total collection procedure during the 3rd week of the trial. On d 25, digesta from the terminal ileum were collected and analysed for phosphorus, nitrogen and amino acids. Nutrient digestibilities were calculated using acid-insoluble ash as the indigestible marker. 2. Ileal digestibilities of nitrogen and essential amino acids were negatively influenced by increasing dietary levels of phytic acid but these negative effects were overcome by the addition of phytase. 3. Supplemental phytase increased AME, ileal digestibilities of phosphorus, nitrogen and amino acids and the retention of dry matter, phosphorus and nitrogen in broilers. There were no differences in the phytase responses between additions of 400 and 800 FTU/kg. 4. The responses in all variables, except AME, were greater in low non-phytate phosphorus diets. 5. In the case of AME, the response to added phytase was greater in adequate non-phytate phosphorus diets. Supplemental phytase increased AME values from 13.36 to 13.54 MJ/kg dry matter in low non-phytate phosphorus diets and from 12.66 to 13.38 MJ/kg dry matter in adequate non-phytate phosphorus diets.

The excretion of large amounts of P in effluent from intensive pig and poultry units is indicative of the poor availability of phytate-bound P in plant-derived feed ingredients. This environmental problem prompted the development and acceptance of microbial phytase feed enzymes for single-stomached animals. Their introduction led to an increasing recognition that phytate may have adverse effects on protein utilisation in addition to P. Consequently, the nutritional relevance of protein-phytate interactions for pigs and poultry is considered in the present review. Since the current understanding of the effects of protein-phytate interactions comes mainly from responses obtained to added phytase, literature on the influence of microbial phytases on amino acid digestibility and utilisation is summarised, followed by a discussion of possible mechanisms contributing to the negative effects of phytate. However, the rationale for the protein responses to added phytase remains largely speculative, and several modes of action are probably involved. It may be that the release of protein from protein-phytate complexes occurring naturally in feed ingredients, the prevention of formation of binary and ternary protein-phytate complexes within the gut, the alleviation of the negative impact of phytate on digestive enzymes and the reduction in endogenous amino acid losses are all contributing factors. A better understanding of the mechanisms of protein-phytate interactions and the modes of action of exogenous phytase enzymes is clearly desirable. Studies are also needed to identify and quantify the factors that contribute to the variable amino acid responses to added phytase. It appears that the relative solubilities of phytate salts and proteins from different feed ingredients and their effects on the extent of protein-phytate complex formation, coupled with variations in the effectiveness of phytase in different dietary contexts, may be the major factors responsible.

Four experiments were conducted to examine the effects of a microbial phytase (Natuphos), individually and in combination with glycanase preparations with predominantly xylanase (Natugrain Blend) and glucanase (Natugrain) activities, on the nutritive value of wheat and barley. In Experiment 1, the addition of xylanase and phytase increased the AME of a low-AME wheat by 9.7 and 5.3%, respectively. The differences, however, were not significant (P > 0.05). The combination of the two enzymes increased (P < 0.05) the AME of wheat by 19.0% from 2,646 to 3,149 kcal/kg dry matter. A similar trend was seen in terms of ileal amino acid digestibility values of the wheat-casein diet. In Experiment 2, the AME of normal wheat was increased (P < 0.05) by 6.3 and 4.5%, respectively, with the addition of xylanase and phytase. The combination of the two enzymes, however, did not further improve (P > 0.05) the AME values. In Experiment 3, performance of broilers fed a wheat-based diet was not influenced by the addition of individual enzymes, but increasing inclusion levels of the xylanase plus phytase combination linearly improved weight gain (r = 0.58; P < 0.01) and feed efficiency (r = 0.71; P < 0.001). In Experiment 4, the AME of barley was not influenced by the addition of glucanase or phytase. The enzyme combination marginally (P < 0.07) improved the AME at lower concentrations, but had no benefit at the highest concentration.

1. Seven-day old male broilers (n=900) were fed on wheat-sorghum-soyabean meal-based diets containing 3 concentrations of phytic acid (10.4, 13.2 and 15.7 g/kg; equivalent to 2.9, 3.7 and 4.4 g/kg phytate phosphorus), 2 of non-phytate phosphorus (2.3 and 4.5 g/kg) and 3 of microbial phytase (Natuphos 5000 L; 0, 400 and 800 FTU/kg) in a 19-d trial. The dietary phytic acid contents were manipulated by the inclusion of rice pollard. 2. Each dietary treatment was fed to 5 pens (10 birds/pen) from 7 to 25 d of age. Records of body weight, food intake and mortality were maintained. On d 25, all surviving birds were killed and toe samples were obtained for toe ash measurements. 3. Increasing dietary phytic acid negatively influenced body weight gain, food intake and food/gain. These adverse effects were partially overcome by the addition of microbial phytase. 4. Supplemental phytase caused improvements in weight gain and food efficiency of broilers but the magnitude of the responses was greater in low non-phytate phosphorus diets, resulting in significant non-phytate phosphorus x phytase interactions. 5. Toe ash contents were improved by phytase addition but the response was greater at the highest concentration of phytic acid, resulting in a significant phytic acid x phytase interaction. Responses were also greater in low non-phytate phosphorus diets as indicated by significant non-phytate phosphorus x phytase interaction. 6. In general, there was very little difference in the responses to phytase additions at 400 and 800 FTU/kg. 7. The performance responses to added phytase in birds receiving adequate non-phytate phosphorus diets provide evidence for the influence of the enzyme on animal performance independent of its effect on phosphorus availability.
