RESUMEN

The group-transfer polymerization (GTP) of N,N-bis(2-methoxyethyl)acrylamide (MOEAm) initiated by Me2EtSiH in the hydrosilylation-promoted method and by silylketene acetal (SKA) in the conventional method proceeded in a controlled/living manner to provide poly(N,N-bis(2-methoxyethyl)acrylamide) (PMOEAm) and PMOEAm with the SKA residue at the α-chain end (MCIP-PMOEAm), respectively. PMOEAm-b-poly(N,N-dimethylacrylamide) (PDMAm) and PMOEAm-s-PDMAm and PMOEAm-b-poly(N,N-bis(2-ethoxyethyl)acrylamide) (PEOEAm) and PMOEAm-s-PEOEAm were synthesized by the block and random group-transfer copolymerization of MOEAm and N,N-dimethylacrylamide or N,N-bis(2-ethoxyethyl)acrylamide. The homo- and copolymer structures affected the thermoresponsive properties; the cloud point temperature (Tcp) increasing by decreasing the degree of polymerization (x). The chain-end group in PMOEAm affected the Tcp with PMOEAmx > MCIP-PMOEAmx. The Tcp of statistical copolymers was higher than that of block copolymers, with PMOEAmx-s-PDMAmy > PMOEAmx-b-PDMAmy and PMOEAmx-s-PEOEAmy > PMOEAmx-b-PEOEAmy.

In this paper, we describe a comprehensive study of the thermoresponsive properties of statistic copolymers and multiblock copolymers synthesized by poly(glycidol)s (PG) and poly(ethyl glycidyl ether) (PEGE) with different copolymerization methods. These copolymers were first synthesized by ring-opening polymerization (ROP), which was initiated by tert-butylbenzyl alcohol (tBBA) and 1-tert-butyl-4,4,4-tris(dimethylamino)-2,2-bis[tris(dimethylamino)phosphoranylidenamino]-2Λ5,4Λ5-catenadi(phosphazene) (t-Bu-P4) as the catalyst, and then the inherent protective groups were removed to obtain the copolymers without any specific chain end groups. The thermoresponsive property of the statistic copolymer PGx-stat-PEGEy was compared with the diblock copolymer PGx-b-PEGEy, and the triblock copolymers were compared with the pentablock copolymers. Among them, PG-stat-PEGE, PG-b-PEGE-b-PG-b-PEGE-b-PG, and PEGE-b-PG-b-PEGE-b-PG-b-PEGE, and even the specific ratio of PEGE-b-PG-b-PEGE, exhibited LCST-type phase transitions in water, which were characterized by cloud point (Tcp). Although the ratio of x to y affected the value of the Tcp of PGx-stat-PEGEy, we found that the disorder of the copolymer has a decisive effect on the phase-transition behavior. The phase-transition behaviors of PG-b-PEGE, part of PEGE-b-PG-b-PEGE, and PG-b-PEGE-b-PG copolymers in water present a two-stage phase transition, that is, firstly LCST-type and then the upper critical solution temperature (UCST)-like phase transition. In addition, we have extended the research on the thermoresponsive properties of EGE homopolymers without specific α-chain ends.

Glycoconjugated chlorins represent a promising class of compounds that meet the requirements for the third-generation photosensitizer (PS) for photodynamic therapy (PDT). We have focused on the use of glucose (Glc) to improve the performance of the PS based on the Warburg effect-a phenomenon where tumors consume higher Glc levels than normal cells. However, as a matter of fact, Glc-conjugation has a poor efficacy in hydrophilic modification; thus, the resultant PS is not suitable for intravenous injection. In this study, a Glc-based oligosaccharide, such as maltotriose (Mal3), is conjugated to chlorin e6 (Ce6). The conjugation is assisted by two additional molecular tools, such as propargyl amine and a tetraethylene glycol (TEG) derivative. This route produced the target Mal3-Ce6 conjugate linked via the TEG spacer (Mal3-TEG-Ce6), which shows the required photoabsorption properties in the physiological media. The PDT test using canine mammary carcinoma (SNP) cells suggested that the antitumor activity of Mal3-TEG-Ce6 is extremely high. Furthermore, in vitro tests against mouse mammary carcinoma (EMT6) cells have been demonstrated, providing insights into the photocytotoxicity, subcellular localization, and analysis of cell death and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation for the PDT system with Mal3-TEG-Ce6. Both apoptosis and necrosis of the EMT6 cells occur by ROS that is generated via the photochemical reaction between Mal3-TEG-Ce6 and molecular oxygen. Consequently, Mal3-TEG-Ce6 is shown to be a PS showing the currently desired properties.

We exhibit theoretically a series of 12-valence-electron pentaatomic species CLi3E (E = N, P, As, Sb, Bi) and CLi3E(+) (E = O, S, Se, Te, Po). The analyses of potential energy surfaces indicate that the C2v structures with a planar tetracoordinate carbon are the global minimum in these species except for E = N, P. A localized C[double bond, length as m-dash]E double bond is found in the planar tetracoordinate carbon species. The molecular orbitals and the valence populations reveal that the C[double bond, length as m-dash]E double bonds in CLi3E are different from those in CLi3E(+). The thermodynamic and kinetic calculations show that some of the planar tetracoordinate carbon species are stable and are likely to exist in the gas phase.

RESUMEN

The amidation reaction between C60 with an activated ester group (1) and acetylated Glc (AcGlc) with an amino group (2) was performed to yield the target AcGlc-pendant C60 compound (3). The water soluble deacetylated compound, Glc-pendant C60 compound (4), exhibited high photocytotoxicity against HeLa cells due to the more efficient singlet oxygen generation as compared with that of Glc-pendant azafulleroids.

Planar wheel-type D6h M©B6H6(-/0/+) (M = Mn, Fe and Co for anion, neutral and cation, respectively.) clusters with a planar hexacoordinate transition-metal at the center of the boron ring were designed and investigated by density functional theory. These planar clusters are chemically stable as a result of their large binding energy, vertical ionization potential, and vertical electron affinity. The detailed natural population and molecular orbital analyses suggest that not only does the M atom donate electrons to the boron ring for participation in the π-delocalized bonding, but also the boron ring donates electrons back to the M atom for the formation of the σ-delocalized bonding, which leads to a strong aromaticity and unconventional charge distribution, i.e., the M atom is negatively charged, while the boron ring is positively charged. This study may open a new area in coordination chemistry for planar hexacoordinate transition metals and we expect further experimental exploration of their synthesis and potential applications.

The design and synthesis of new hydrogen storage nanomaterials with high capacity at low cost is extremely desirable but remains challenging for today's development of hydrogen economy. Because of the special honeycomb structures and excellent physical and chemical characters, fullerenes have been extensively considered as ideal materials for hydrogen storage materials. To take the most advantage of its distinctive symmetrical carbon cage structure, we have uniformly coated C60's surface with metal cobalt in nanoscale to form a core/shell structure through a simple ball-milling process in this work. The X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman spectra, high-solution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX) elemental mappings, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) measurements have been conducted to evaluate the size and the composition of the composites. In addition, the blue shift of C60 pentagonal pinch mode demonstrates the formation of Co-C chemical bond, and which enhances the stability of the as-obtained nanocomposites. And their electrochemical experimental results demonstrate that the as-obtained C60/Co composites have excellent electrochemical hydrogen storage cycle reversibility and considerably high hydrogen storage capacities of 907 mAh/g (3.32 wt % hydrogen) under room temperature and ambient pressure, which is very close to the theoretical hydrogen storage capacities of individual metal Co (3.33 wt % hydrogen). Furthermore, their hydrogen storage processes and the mechanism have also been investigated, in which the quasi-reversible C60/Co↔C60/Co-Hx reaction is the dominant cycle process.

The cyclohexylcarbamates of cellulose and amylose bearing a controlled amount of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl residue were synthesized by a one-pot process and efficiently immobilized onto silica gel through the intermolecular polycondensation of triethoxysilyl group. Their chiral recognition abilities were evaluated as chiral packing materials (CPMs) for high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The immobilized CPMs exhibited comparable or higher recognition abilities than the conventional coated-type CPMs. The universal solvent compatibility of the immobilized CPMs clearly contributes to the improvement of chiral recognition for most racemates used in the present study. Interestingly, a significantly improved resolution for racemic trans-stilbene oxide (α=2.23) could be attained on the immobilized CPM using the eluent containing 30 vol.% chloroform in hexane, which cannot be used for the conventional coated-type CPMs. On the CPMs, almost no resolution of trans-stilbene oxide was attained by a typical eluent, hexane-2-propanol mixture (90/10, v/v). The novel immobilized CPM can also be used in thin-layer chromatography (TLC) due to the absence of an aromatic group.

The regioselectively substituted amylose derivatives bearing a 4-tert-butylbenzoate or 4-chlorobenzoate group at 2-position, and 3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamate and a small amount of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propylcarbamate groups at 3- and 6-positions were synthesized by a two-step process based on the esterification of 2-position of a glucose unit. The obtained derivatives were effectively immobilized onto macroporous silica gel by intermolecular polycondensation of triethoxysilyl groups. Their chiral recognition abilities were evaluated as chiral packing materials (CPMs) for high-performance liquid chromatography. These CPMs showed high chiral recognition as well as the conventional coated-type CPM, and can be used with the eluents-containing chloroform and tetrahydrofuran. With the extended use of these eluents, improvement of chiral recognition and reversed elution orders were realized. For some racemates, the immobilized CPM exhibited ability comparable or better to the commercial immobilized amylose- or cellulose-based columns, Chiralpak IA, IB, and IC.

The 3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamates (2) of cellulose bearing a small amount of 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl residues were synthesized by a one-pot process and immobilized onto a silica gel through intermolecular polycondensation of the triethoxysilyl groups. The obtained cellulose derivatives were characterized by (1) H NMR and elemental analysis (EA), and their recognition abilities were evaluated by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The cellulose derivatives containing about 1-5% of the 3-(triethoxysilyl)propyl residue were efficiently immobilized with a high chiral recognition ability. The immobilized chiral packing materials (CPMs) could be used with the eluents containing chloroform and tetrahydrofuran (THF), which cannot be used with the conventional coated-type chiral packing materials. By using these eluents, the chiral recognition for many racemates was improved.

In this study, nitrobenzene in water and ice samples collected from the Songhua River after the explosion of a petrochemical plant was determined by GC/MS. The results showed that nitrobenzene was detected in most of the water and ice samples taken from the Songhua River. However, the concentration of nitrobenzene in all water and ice samples was from 0 to 0.65 microg L(-1); this range was sufficiently lower than the permissible level (0.017 mg L(-1)) for drinking water in China. The enclosing behavior of nitrobenzene in ice was also investigated. The amount of nitrobenzene enclosed in ice was lower than that reported by UNEP.
